The principal mattersSchools being fast paced places means that students and staff were immersed straight away in teaching and learning from day 1.

We had a short assembly to welcome everyone back and welcome Year 7 for the first time as fully fledged students of Oberon High School.

Term 1 is always busy with a range of events beyond the classroom activities. Keeping in touch with what is going on and what has happened is important and the best ways to do this is through our communication streams including newsletters, facebook, skoolbag, the school website, Oberon Review and 2BS.

Staff ChangesIt has been great to welcome Ms Abbott our new Deputy Principal. Ms Abbott has had a great start to the year and is fast making connections with our students. Ms Abbott is currently teaching junior HSIE and LOTE whilst juggling her other roles. She has extensive experience coming to us as a previously appointed Deputy Principal which has made it far easier to transition to our school. The students have welcomed Ms Abbott into the school as they do with all new staff. This is one of the great things about our kids and one of the attributes of which I am proud.

Ms Windsor who was our MC Support teacher has moved to another school. Ms Windsor had been at the school since the establishment of the MC class and did a fantastic job in creating an environment and culture that supported all the students in her care.

Staff Changes continued

This change has necessitated a reshuffle within the school until her position has been filled permanently. A second MC class has been established to allow us to cater for a greater variety of students. Mr Bender and Ms Power are the prime MC class teachers currently with Mr Mitton working alongside them. This has meant we welcome Ms Tomlinson to the school who is teaching Mr Mitton’s PDHPE classes

Ms Hotham is our new Year 8 advisor which is great for all students in that Year group. The students were quite upset at Ms Hayden moving on in 2018, however, they have been extremely lucky to pick up an equally caring teacher in Ms Hotham.

Ms Hotham is well known to the students which has made it easier for a connection to be established very quickly.

Parent Teacher InterviewsReports will be arriving at home early next week and parents and carers are invited to make an appointment to discuss their child’s progress at the Parent Teacher Interviews on 27 February 2018.

Senior students’ interim reports were sent home last year and those parents are also welcome to make an appointment to discuss their child’s progress.

Term 1 Week 3, 2018 - Page 4

Last year we spoke directly to parents, circulated surveys and gave parents and community an opportunity to come in and discuss the future direction of the school. This also included student involvement along with extensive staff discussion.

Results formed the basis of the new school plan which will direct the school for the next three years. I have summarised the three areas of the new school plan so that you can see clearly what we are trying to achieve. The plan takes into consideration the changing face of education and society. Education in 2018 is taking on the challenge of what society sees as essential – this is similar in some way to years gone by but also very different as the world becomes global and technology is a key ingredient.

Literacy and numeracy are still essential aspects of a child’s development however problem solving and working collaboratively are seen as equally important for different reasons. It is about educating the whole person and ensuring they can take their place in a complex world that is changing faster than ever.

It is also about ensuring that students are well balanced on a personal level and have a high degree of wellbeing. Students, in most cases, have access to a greater number and range of lifestyle based choices but this does not necessarily reflect in their wellbeing.

We want to develop students into better learners have the skills that will take them into the future. It involves identifying student needs and putting programs or structures into place to cater for them. Building student confidence is essential and engaging them is a necessity.

The introduction of a broader idea about classroom practice is changing the way we teach. Developing basic skills is essential but we must also develop students that are confident to work both independently and collaboratively. Ideas such as Project Based Learning builds a bridge between curriculum and the world. Helping students move

from school into that world is essential and we are starting earlier to build the base for senior school.

We see parent involvement as essential from the standpoint of general inclusion in their child’s education; to what they are doing in class and what we as a school are trying to achieve. We want to build the numbers of parents coming into the school to maximise the impact of an essential parent-teacher relationship for every child.

Strategic Direction 1 – Every student is a confident learner

Professional learning is essential so as a staff can take a lead in contemporary issues and in developing pathways for the future. Working collaboratively is a great way for staff to build capacity. We will continue to have staff utilise external providers for professional development but we also need to utilise our own expertise.

The amount of data available to staff about student performance is immense and growing. Analysing and using data to best support students in the classroom is a challenge. This part of the strategic direction is all about maximising the impact and ensuring that our staff stay on the front foot as this area is changing all the time.

Educational leadership is essential and within our staff we have quality leaders, however, we need to develop other staff to take on leadership roles. This is about creating leaders of the future who may impact Oberon High directly or education in general. We must give those who have aspirations to lead the opportunity to develop.

Strategic Direction 2 – Building professional expertise and capacity

The school has invested in Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) for some years now. The program is now embedded in the structure of the school. Over the next three years we aim to embed the principles into every aspect of the school. In essence, it is about students and staff working together on a core set of school goals.

The staff at our school have a great record of looking after the wellbeing of students. The Wellbeing team is at the core of this, however, we can see value in bringing the Wellbeing team and PBL team closer together. This will help develop and drive larger programs in the school.

The potential for students to blossom can be greatly influenced by the opportunities they receive during school years.

Our school provides a range of general opportunities for students, to develop skills and interests, however, there are many more out there. We have seen students over the past summer attend external programs and come back enthused and really focussed on their studies. We want to give more students this opportunity.

Strategic Direction 3 – Growing resilient, respectful and confident young people

Last year the P&C investigated Blue Datto coming to the school to talk to students in Years 10-12 about road safety and the impact of accidents on individuals, families and the community. This did not eventuate at that time, however this year the organisation has been engaged to come out on March 2nd. The cost of having them in the school for the day is substantial, however, Blue Datto has waived the cost which is extremely generous.

Miss McTrustry, Mr Inwood and Miss Marshall as Year advisors are organising the day and will send a note home soon with details. We hope that all students in Years 10-12 take part – this issue is critical and we hope that this plays some part in keeping all our kids safe in the future.

Blue Datto has a story of its own – the generation of a movement from a family tragedy. You can have a look for yourself at: www.bluedatto.org.au

Blue Datto

A schedule has been included on page 14 of this newsletter and it is important as contributions and fees form an essential part of operating the school. Subject fees are critical in the provision of a range of courses, in particular we rely on them for the purchase of consumables. Subject areas such as Hospitality, Visual Art, Photography, Wood and Metal are heavily dependent on fees to provide appropriate practical experiences. It is important to remember that information in regards to course costs was clearly articulated in our extensive career planning program for Stage 6 and subject selection information for Stage 5.

School Contribution and Subject Fees

Oberon High is a BYOD school and was one of the leading schools in the network in regards to moving our students onto a well-established and resourced program. A reminder that the school has Chromebooks available for students to purchase. These devices are network compatible and relatively inexpensive. The school and P&C have contributed

to minimising the costs with the $250 purchase cost around half of the actual device cost. We have a fantastic P&C who support our students in many ways but this is a massive show of faith by them in our BYOD program.

Just a reminder about whole day absences and students who need to leave school early or arrive late. It is essential that student absences of any type be accompanied by a note. It is an obligation on our part to know why students are absent from school and also allows us to formulate a plan to support students who may be absent for longer periods due to circumstances beyond their control.

I would encourage parents to ensure that students come to school every day, and for the most part I would like to thank our parent body as our attendance figures are comparatively good.

Students Absences

P&C will be holding their annual AGM on March 8th starting at 5pm in the school common room (administration building). Anyone interested in adding to a great team of people please come down and let them know how you can help.

The meeting will also see us discuss the current school jumper for junior students and senior students. We would like to investigate possible

alternatives for junior students and discuss a dedicated senior jumper for students completing HSC subjects. Miss Marshall and Mr Inwood (Senior Year Advisors) have been looking at potential alternatives for senior students and will have some samples to discuss. Everyone is welcome to attend to have their say. Please be aware though that jumpers are the only focus for discussion.

P&C AGM (will include School Jumper discussion)

The school is currently displaying samples of the work of all four scholarship nominees in the town library - Peta McGrath, Chloe Grozdanovski, Ian Gaiser and Lydia Sinclair. The work is a credit to our kids and I recommend you having a look.

All the works are emotive and really paint a picture of how WW1 impacted individuals and Australian society. They also paint a picture of the respect that these young Australians have for our history.

As we announced late last year, Peta McGrath was the successful applicant and will be travelling to Belgium and France mid-year to visit many of the important battlegrounds and memorial sites.

I would like to extend my appreciation to all staff, students and parent/carers for the warm welcome that I have received at Oberon High School. This is certainly a dynamic and vibrant educational community and I am looking forward to what 2018 brings.

I have included a reminder about lateness to school in this newsletter. There are a few students who would have received letters home with regards to this. The attached information sheet “Every Minute Counts” is a valuable reminder about your child’s best learning time being at the beginning of the school day.

From the Deputy Principal

This term we will be delivering some exciting Wellbeing initiatives, beginning next week with a visit on Wednesday from Matt Holden our Police Youth Liaison Officer. He will be talking to Stages 4 and 5 about cyber safety among other things.

There will also be activities in the lead up to the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence (NDA) on Friday 16th March. This is a timely reminder to add exactly what bullying is and isn’t.

Bullying is when one person (or a group of people) with more power than someone else tries to upset or hurt them. This power can come from being more popular, stronger or part of the group. They might repeatedly try to hurt the person physically, socially isolate them, or say and do mean or humiliating things to them.

There are a number of resources for both students and parents/carers on bullyingnoway.gov.au.

Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious or hidden.

If someone behaves in a mean or aggressive way on one occasion it isn’t bullying, even though it is not respectful or acceptable. A fight or disagreement between two people of equal power or status isn’t bullying.

Baily Nielsen (Year 11) will be supported in his studies over the next two years since he has been awarded a Country Women's Association (CWA) Diamond Jubilee Scholarship. Eight students from our school applied for the scholarship offered by Bathurst CWA - completing an extensive application and attending an interview late last year. While all the students were a credit to our school, Baily greatly impressed the judges with his application and throughout his interview. Janifer Torner, President of Bathurst CWA, presented Baily with his scholarship at a recent school assembly.
