Dr.MiltonH.Erickson,alsoknownasthefatherofmodernhypnosismethod,wasthesinglegreatest practitionerofhypnosis,having

Dr.Ericksonisinternationallyacclaimed astheleadingpractitionerinthefieldofhypnosis16

for

hisunderstandingofthescienceofbothinducing

andutilizinghypnoticstates.17

Dr.Ericksondiscoveredwhileworkingasatherapist,thathecouldhidetherapeutichypnosiswithinthe normalcontentofan

inconspicuousconversationwiththepatient,andavoidmuchofthepatientsconscious resistancethatnormallyaccompanied

Dr.Ericksonrealizedthesubconsciousmindwas alwayslistening,andunderstoodbetterthananyonebeforehowto

Thereasonthisissounfortunate,isbecausecoverthypnosisisdesignedtosidelinerationaljudgment. That isfundamentaltohowit

works;tobypassthedominanthemisphereandcriticalfactor. Itessentiallytricks thesubconsciousmindintoacceptingcommandsasabsolutetruthswhichincludenotonlythoseapproved bytheconsciousmind,butoutsidecommandsfromahypnotistwhocan

Thesubjectcannotevenquestionthe

Bypassingthedominanthemispheresrationaljudgment(criticalfactor)

The critical factor is thepart of the mind that logically analyzes and scrutinizes all information like a filter, and decides wha

stopsallinformationandallowsyourthinkingandrationalityto determinewhetheritisacceptabletothesubconsciousmindornot.

Hypnosisuseslanguagepatterns,visualtricks,bodylanguage,voice,tone,andotheraspectsof communicationtogetsuggestions

pastthecriticalfactorpartofthebrainanddirectlyintothelisteners subconscious.23

Thisiswonderfulifthecommandistobe

freeofaphobia,orquitsmoking. Thereason hypnosisisusedforsuchpsychologicalchange,isthatthecriticalfactorallowsin

howcanahypnotistgetasubjecttoclucklikea chickenbelievingtheyareone? Thehypnotistknowshowtogetthehypnotic

Mostofourbeliefscometousfromourownrationaljudgmentandconsciousanalysisoftheworld. For example,weknowitgoodtowakeupinthemorninganddosomethingbecausewerationallyknowthe consequencesofstayinginbedallday. Whenwelike

people,itisusuallyduetoacombinationofour rationaljudgmentandhowthatpersonnaturallymakesusfeelaboutthem. Wetry

tomakepeoplelikeus morebyfollowingsocialnorms,makingpeoplefeelgood,smiling,andsoon.

However,averysmallpercentageofthepopulationactuallystudysubconsciousmanipulationofnotonly howpeoplefeelaboutthem,buthowtomanipulateandalterthebeliefsweusuallycometobyourrational judgment,reason,andexperience. Thesepeople

underahypnoticspell. Manypsychologistswoulddenythatsuchathingcouldhappenandwouldinsistthatnopersoncanbecompelledtodounderhypnosiswhathewouldrefusetodoinastateofalertconsciousness.But actuallywhataperson

canbecompelledtododependsonthedegreeofdependencythathypnosis causesandthefrequencyofrepetitionoftheso-

Masshypnosis,forexample,canhaveadangerousinfluenceonthe individual.Psychiatristshavefoundseveraltimesthat

publicdemonstrationsofmasshypnosismay provokeanincreasedhypnoticdependencyandsubmissivenessinmany

membersoftheaudience thatcanlastforyears.LargelyforthisreasonGreatBritainhaspassedalawmakingseancesand

masshypnotismillegal.Hypnosismayactasatriggermechanismforarepresseddependencyneed inthevictimandturnhim

Hypnosisonanon-consentingpersonmayarguablyconstitutefraud38

,undueinfluence,and/orpotentially otherviolationsofthelaw,

dependingonthejurisdiction.39

Undueinfluenceispersuasionthatovercomes thewillwithoutconvincingthejudgment.40

Hypnosisworksonmentalandemotionalweaknessesfitting thelegaldefinitionprecisely. Forexample,withhypnotizingsomeoneto

getaccesstothatpersonsbank accounteventhehypnotistmakesthepersonbelievetheywanttodoit,theyareusingtechniques

which createanundueinfluenceontheperson.

TheExecutiveCommitteeoftheAmericanPsychologicalAssociationDivisionofPsychologicalHypnosis hassaid,clinical

hypnosisshouldbeusedonlybyproperlytrainedandcredentialedhealthcare professionals(e.g.licensedclinicalpsychologists),whohavealsobeentrainedintheclinicaluseof hypnosisandareworkingwithintheareasoftheirprofessionalexpertise. The

AppellateDivisionofthe LosAngelesCountySuperiorCourthasheldthatpracticeofhypnotismascurativemeasureormodeofprocedurebyonenotlicensedtopracticemedicineamountstounlawfulpracticeofmedicine.41WhatObamaisdoingismakingsomepeoplessupportofhiminthiselectionnotofourownfreewill. He ususinghidden

Thehypnosistechniqueofpacingandleadingtosidelinerationaljudgment

Inanutshell,pacingandleadingisusinghypnosistobypassthecriticalfactor. Bybypassingthe cognitivefunctionsthatwould

normallycriticallyanalyzeandscrutinizeinformation,thehypnotisttricks thepatientssubconsciousmindintoacceptingexternal

informationfromthehypnotistintothe subconscious,asahypnoticsuggestion,asabsolutelytrue. Itisamorepowerfulimplantof

information thaneventhesubjectcanusuallycommunicatetothemselveswithhisorherownthoughts.

Normallyonlywhatyou consciouslyknowtobe

trueisallowedtopass. Ifyouareasmoker,buttellyourselfconsciouslythatyou

Dr.Ericksondiscoveredthatthroughpacing,ahypnotistcouldneutralizethefilterofapersonscritical factorsohecanslip

suggestionspastthecriticalfactorintothesubconscious.43

Pacingcanbealmostanytechniquebywhichahypnotistgetsyourcriticalfactortoloweritscritical analysisandscrutinyof

theinformationyouarereceiving.

Theleadisthenewinformation,suggestion,orcommandthehypnotistwantstoimplant.

Whendoneeffectively,thehypnotistcanleadimplantsuggestionsandcommandsthatpassthroughinto yoursubconsciousthat

willbetakenasunquestionablytrue.44

Theleadcanbesomethingyouareawareof suchasastatementyouhear,oritcanbe

embedded,hidden,somethingyouarecompletelyunawareof consciously,yetstillpassthroughintoyoursubconscious. Theword

suggestionisusedinhypnosis,butit isnotasuggestionaswethinkofone,thatweconsiderandrationalize. Suggestioninthe

hypnosisworld isactuallyasuggestionintothesubconscious,somethingyourmindwilltakeasunquestionablytrue,thus,

ineffect,morepowerfulthanevenacommandasweusethisterm.

Howpacingisdone:

Workingwithouranalogy,ifmanypeopleenteringtheclubaresearchedbythesecurityguardandnothing questionableisfound,the

securityguardsdefenseeffortsbecometired,lazy,andlowered.Normally though,everythinginourworldisquestionablekeeping

thecriticalfactorsharpandalert. Thehypnotist pacesthesubjectbyprovidingthemindwithinformationthatisundeniablytrue,

somethingthesubject stronglybelieves,orisabsolutelyandimmediatelyverifiable,insuccessivepatternsuntilthesubjectsguard is

lowered.

Thispacingcantaketheformofalmostanyinformationthatservesasanaccuraterepresentationofthe subjectscurrentongoingexperience,includingwhattheysee,whattheyhear,whattheytrulybelieve,and describingorimitatingthesubjectsconscious

experienceorevensubconsciousexperience,suchastheir breathing.45

Breathingisacommonpaceinhypnosis. Breathingis

somethingconsciouswhenweare focusedonit,butwhenwedonotfocusonit,wedonotstopbreathing,itissimplytakenoverby

the subconsciousmind. Oftentimes,justthementionofbreathingissufficienttobringtheactivityinto consciousfocusfor

secondsorminutes,untilsuchfocusisnotneededandthesubconscioustakesoverit again.

Pacingcanbesuchasobviousstatementsthesubjecttrulybelievesorknowsaretrue,orsubconscious act/messagesthatthe

hypnotistdoeswhichthesubjectisnotevenawareof,e.g.mimickingordescribing

breathing. Commonly,thehypnotistdescribestheexperiences,sights,thoughts,andfeelingsthesubjectis having.46

Thisisnotjustapoliticiansayingwhathisaudienceissuretoagreewith. Thehypnotistpurposely describesabsolutetruthson

multiplelevelsrelatedtothesubjectscurrentreality,andtherebytricksthe subjectscriticalfactorintoloweringitsguardandgets

thesubjecttoacceptthehypnotistasasourcefor informationtobetakenintothesubconsciousasabsolutelytrue.

Thebrainregularlyabsorbsrepresentationsofthesubjectscurrentongoingexperience,whatthesubject sees,hears,feels,asanatural

partofcommunicationbetweentheconsciousandsubconsciousmind. Pacing worksbydisguisinginformationaspartofthesubjects

ongoingverifiableexperiencetotrickthecritical factorintolettingthatinformationpassthroughtothesubconscious.

Byrepeatedlyprovidinginformationtothesubjectthatthesubjectgenuinelybelievestobetrue,the hypnotistdisguiseshimselfasa

sourceforabsolutelytrueinformationacceptabletoyoursubconscious. Thehypnoticcommandsofthehypnotistcanbedisguisedas

informationbeingcommunicatedinbetween theconsciousandunconsciousmindofthesubject. Thesubjecttruststhisinformation

believingitis approvedbytheconsciousmind,andthecommandslipsthroughthecriticalfactorofoneperson hypnotized,or

millionswatchingonTV.

Unknowinglytotheconsciousmind,whenthishappens,thelead,orthenewinformationfromthehypnotist isacceptedasabsolutely

true,andbecomespartofthesubjectsdeepestbeliefs.47

ElementarypacingexamplesfromObamainclude,nowisthetime,andasIstandherebeforeyou. Thesestatementsare

undeniablytrueinthesimplesttermsandcommonlyusedpartsofhispacing techniques,becauseofcoursenowisthetime,andifhe

istherespeaking,ofcourseheisstandingbeforeus. Thesearethingsthehypnotistsaysthatareverifiablytrue,andusedtolowerour

criticalfactordefensesto allowimplantationofsubconsciousmessages.

Lookingatpacingstatementsalone,Obamas2008DemocraticNationalConventionSpeech inDenver48

uses them throughout.

Yet,nobodysuspectstheselanguagepatternstobeanythingotherthananinnocent partofhispowerfulspeech.

ThreeofObamasfavoritehypnoticpacesarethatswhyIstandheretonight,nowisthetime,andthis moment. Justthese

4. Nowisthetimetohelpfamilieswithpaidsickdaysandbetterfamilyleave,becausenobodyin Americashouldhavetochoosebetweenkeepingtheirjobsandcaringforasickchildorailing parent.

5. Nowisthetimetochangeourbankruptcylaws,sothatyourpensionsareprotectedaheadofCEO

bonuses;andthetimetoprotectSocialSecurityforfuturegenerations.

Itisnocoincidencethathehappenstousethesephrasesthataresubconsciouspacingstatementsbecause theyareimmediatelyand

verifiablytruebytheirmostsimplisticterms,andcausethesubconsciousto acceptthehypnotistasasourceforsuchabsolutetruth.

Obamaalsosaysessentiallythismomentfivetimes,servingthesamepacingpurpose.

However,suchpacingstatementsaloneareonlyasmallpartofthecomplexhypnotictranceinduction

Obamaintentionallyuses.

Embeddedandhiddenmeaningsdeepstructureoflanguagevssurfacestructure

MostpeopledonotrealizeObamaisusinghypnosisbecauseeverythinghedoesisbelowtheradarhidden insidenormalspeech.51

Thereisnothingspecialaboutthesewordsorphrasestogivethemawayas

hypnosis. Thegeneralpublicdoesnothaveanunderstandingofthefield,andObamaishopingthatthese explanationswillbetoo

difficultforthegeneralpublictounderstand,andtoocomplexforthemediatotry andexplain. Infact,Obamaiscountingonthe

mediatodowhatithasdoneforthepastfewelections controltheircoveragetokeeptheraceasclosetoevenaspossibleuntilthe

end,makingthestoryexciting, sothattheeffectsofObamashypnosistriggeredinthevotingboothwillpushhimovertheedgeto

Thecommunicationsweareawareofarecalledthesurfacestructurethatiswhatthesubjecthearsand realizes. Thescienceof

hypnosisrequiresunderstandingthedeepstructureofwhatthesubjectsees, hears,andexperiencesthecommunicationthatis

designedforoursubconscioustoreceive. ourbrains delete,change,distort,andjumblecontentonitswaytothesubconsciousmind.Hypnotistsspeakina mannertoputusintotrance,andthenintentionallysenddeepstructurecommunicationsdesignedforonly our

Indirectsuggestion issuchapivotalpartofconversationalhypnosis,that

entirehypnosispracticemanualshavebeenwritten preciselyonindirectsuggestiontechniques.54
