The Circus Workers’ Party will be held on Saturday, April 11th. Remember, you only have to work four shows to qualify for the party, but we would appreciate if everyone could work at least twice that many, if possible.

Spring Ceremonial will be Saturday, April 25th. If you putting candidates through your lodge, make sure you can have them proved up on the 3rd Degree in enough time to get their application for the Shrine into the office.

I want thank everyone ahead of time for their commitment to the Shrine.

Remember that “The children are our vison”. To keep it that way, we will need a lot of new members as does every Shrine temple and Imperial Potentate Jeffrey Sowder’s motto this year is “JUST ONE”. If every member would bring in just one member, we would double our membership in one year and perhaps we all wouldn’t have to work so hard. Ask male family members, friends, neighbors or fellow workers if they would be interested in joining the largest and greatest fraternity in the world.

Sheldon Menin, Potentate

Hospital DadsFellow Hospital Dads, - greetings to

all. It is with a sad heart that we need to report the news that our fellow compadre, Trygve (Trig) Olund had passed away January 29th, after a short bout with cancer, at the age of 89. His many years of faithful service with the Abu Bekr Shrine began in 1996 and he made his first Minneapolis hospital trip the second day that he became a Shriner. He would faithfully continue doing these trips nearly to the end of his life. As he just about made 300 trips during this time. He didn’t quite make it, but this was his main goal. I am glad to say that I was his driving partner on his last trip, as many a fellow driver can state, there never was a dull moment when Trig was around. The kids adored him and all the hospital

Potentate’s MessageMarch is upon us. I hope that it comes in like a lamb

and goes out like a lamb. On Wednesday, February 5th, four members of the Divan departed for Regina Saskatchewan Canada along with Roger Merrill (Director General), and Noel Plummer, P.P. (committee member) Joe Petersen ( President of M.S.A. in 2021) and John Schleis (President of the Midwest Shrine Association Motor Corps in 2021) left a day earlier due to meetings on Thursday. The travel was long and the stay was short relative to the travel. Much was learned and discussed and M.S.A. 2021 in Sioux City, IA will be another success.

The All-Unit Seminar was finally held on Saturday, February 15th. Many of the units Presidents and Secretaries attended along with the Divan. 2020’s calendar was discussed and “housekeeping” issues were gone over by various department heads. 2020 membership directories, Potentate’s pins and calendar/event booklets were handed out. Rita discussed and displayed the Abu Bekr items that are on sale this year to help support fundraising for the Temple. A lunch was held after the seminar with taverns, ham sandwiches and potato chips offered. I would personally like to thank Neil Peck for emceeing the event and 1st Ceremonial Master Colin Ross and Marshal Dwight Dirks for the luncheon. I also want to thank Recorder Alan Fagan, Barb and Kelli in the office for all their hard work in making sure our Temple runs smoothly and efficiently and that events like the seminar go off without a hitch. If any member would like to look at and/or purchase any of the items on sale, please stop in the office and see Barb or Kelli.

Coming up in March, we have the Abu Bekr Foot Patrol Spaghetti Feed on Saturday, March 7th from 11 A.M. - 2 P.M., then the Abu Bekr Gun Raffle starting around 5 P.M. at the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple. The following day, Sunday, March 8th will be the Abu Bekr Chef/Clown Breakfast starting at 8 A.M. On Tuesday, March 24th and Wednesday, March 25th will be Football Media Night in Sioux City and Spencer, IA respectively. On Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th, will be C.S.S.A. Winter Session in Springfield, MO.

Don’t forget that the Scottish Rite Reunion will be held on Friday, March 13th, Saturday, March 14 and Friday, March 20th and Saturday, March 21st. If you are an active member, please stop down during at least one of those days and watch some of the degree work. If you are interested in becoming a member of Scottish Rite, please call (Phone:712-258-7511) or stop down (801 Douglas St., Sioux City, IA) and fill out a petition. Abu Bekr Shrine encourages its members to join either Scottish Rite or York Rite.

April is CIRCUS month, and I’m not fooling when I say that because the first day of the circus is on April Fool’s Day. April 1 - 5, 2020. We will need all hands on deck, Wednesday through Sunday, but before that, we need members to help make phone call to get sponsors to buy circus tickets and ads. Several regular callers are out of commission due to health reason, so we need members to step forward and take their places. We would like the calling during regular business hours (9 A.M. - 4 P.M.), Monday - Friday. Please call the Shrine office to set-up a calling time.

Update the office 712.255.7991 or [email protected] with your Winter Address to assure delivery of All Shrine Mailings.

staff knew that he was at the hospital as he would visit each and every employee from the manager staff to the janitor, as he would relate his latest Norwegian jokes or present them with the latest items from his bag of tricks. If one had ridden with him they surely will still remember the “stool sample”, “Norwegian flashlight”, “blond measuring tape”, etc. etc.

We have come to an end of the “Trig era” as we surely can mark time with his life’s work, which he cherished so much.

We must compliment the Scottish Rite along with Neil Peck on how well the memorial service was presented and went. I even recognized several patient’s parents that have come a long distance such as Spirit Lake, Buffalo and Spencer to give their respects to Trig and the family.

With that, Dave Burcham has been rewriting many things like the work sheets to make things easier for us drivers and associates, this should be very helpful. Also our new President, Noel Plummer, has several thoughts on moving things along, as we sit tight and see as things will move along.

With that, I am sure that Trig is watching us from above with a big smile on his face.

Until next month, - Horst Zittlau, scribe, pro tem

White Horse Patrol

Greetings from the White Horse Mounted Patrol.

My apologies for missing last month but I just failed to get it done, so let’s begin.

We would like to congratulate ILL. SR. Sheldon and Lady Rita on his installation and to the whole Divan, looks like it should be a fun year. It was great to see those Foot Patrollers marching again and at that distance I thought of giving up my chair for them to rest. It was also nice to see them put a little extra twist on their routine, but I don’t believe the Chanters have any worries of being replaced.

Things have been going good at the stables, although you might not find many white horses around. They just love to lay down and roll in mud. They are enjoying these temperatures, but I can’t but help think that spring is a ways off yet and this is Iowa. In January we were to work the bull riding, mutton bustin event at the Tyson but good old Mother Nature had other plans. Although the bulls got there for a Saturday performance the sheep were unable to get there. But, Jim Lane and myself enjoyed the show and promoted our clubhouse.

So for those of you who do not know, the White Horse Mounted Patrol is 100 years old this year. And some of us may look it. We are all very excited for this year and are trying to plan some special events for this summer along with our usual events, so look for upcoming dates and times.

A few dates to remember are:continued on next page

Spring Pitchfork Fondue April 18thFall Pitchfork Fondue Nov. 14thSo I overheard Ms. Judy talking to

some of the ladies one night. I heard her tell them about a scare she had with Horst a while back. You see she was fixing breakfast one morning and Horst had not come out of the bedroom yet. So she went to check on him and he was setting on the edge of the bed. She asked him what was wrong and he said he was having some trouble standing up but he would be right out. So she went back out and pretty soon here come Horst hobbling out barely able to walk. She loaded him up and took him to the ER where they discovered that he had put both legs in the same hole of his boxers. Judy was so upset with him she informed the ER she had no idea who he was, she had seen him struggling along the side of the road and thought she would drop him off with them. I hear Horst didn’t mind walking home now that he had been cured.

Dr. Tom Gruis, Scribe.I became a Shriner on June 10th, 1989

and never been very active but strongly believe in its services. But it has been a while since I looked about information. So, here is some reviewing - this will not be the “Reader’s Digest” version. So, here is a start on an updated overview.

This is located on the home page of Shriners Village, under Fraternity Leadership tab.

After an e-mail to Shriners International and very quickly received a most courteous reply from Marcia Andriakos, [email protected]

Some of this came from the internet and some from my own reference material. I have personal experience in the order listed below.

So, a bit of history:The Fraternity of the A.A.O.N.M.S. Founded 1870 New York City, New

York, Founded by 13 Master MasonsEstablished by the original 13 Temples

of the Order; Requirements set that a member must be a Master Mason, as well as a Knight Templar of the Ancient York Rite and/or a 32° S.P.R.S. of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite - latter requirement dropped in 2000.

Around some before and some after the turn of the century to 1900 there seems to be a surge in interest, or maybe fascination with things Arab and oriental. This was the time of Rudolph Valentino, for example. Although Hollywood called him “The Latin Lover”, some of his film titles include: The Sheik, Blood and Sand, and The Son of the Sheik. One of the hit songs was “The Sheik of Araby” from 1921. This fascination seems to have lasted some period of time.

There are a number of fezzed orders that began around this time. Masons have the Shrine (1878), the Grotto – “Mystic Order of the veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm” but before that “The “Fairchild Deviltry Committee.” 1890), and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon (before 1902). The Odd Fellows have the Ancient Order of Samaritans (1901), and The Knights oy Pythias have The Dramatic Order of the Knights of Khorasan (1894).

The following table shows the number of the mosque, shrine, or temple, when chartered; its name and location; and notes about the name and to which Shrine Hospital(s) they are most associated with.

The Iowa Shrines at this time:11, Kaaba 07/01/1878 Davenport,

Iowa, Chartered as ‘Pyramid Temple’; however due to a resolution against similar names, adopted at the 1886 Imperial Session, this Temple formally agreed to change its name on March 17, 1887, and was immediately recognized as ‘Kaaba

ATTENTION. . .ATTENTIONWe are in need of EVERY unit’s help in making the 2020

Abu Bekr Circus a great success. In order to do so, we need the assistance of 3-5 members of

each unit/club to assist in making phone calls to solicit companies in the Siouxland area to purchase circus tickets or make a donation.

This is YOUR circus and this is YOUR major fundraiser to provide the income necessary to support YOUR great Temple.

Again, we would greatly appreciate each unit/club to contact either one of us to set up a date and time when 3-5 members of your unit/club can assist in contacting companies in the Siouxland area. All phone calls will be made from Abu Bekr Temple.

P.S. Also, if you work for a company, please find out if your company has a budget for charitable donations and see if they would like to donate to our circus.

THANK YOU for your support.

Musharrafah, is the most holy place in the Moslem world and is in the Great Mosque of in Mecca. It contains a sacred black stone believed to have come into Islamic possession at the time of Adam and Eve. Non- Moslems may NOT enter Mecca and airplanes are not allowed to fly over it. Cycle CorpsIt looked like spring might actually

show up to stay there for a few days there. But, there are 4+ inches of new snow sitting on the ground today. Not sure what is going on with mother nature's mood swings, but I could sure go for a bit more of the spring-like stuff. I was sure starting to get the two-wheel itch and thinking about getting the bike ready for the road. I guess I have to wait a couple more weeks now.

While a few of our members headed off to Canada and one to Hawaii this month (guess which one I was jealous of) we did sneak in a card dealing. Thank you

to Harlan and Gleeson Constructors for inviting us. Thanks to Maylon, Payne, Troy Payne's daughter Shelly, son-in-law Ed, and grandson Will for helping out. I think everyone had a great time.

We did decide not to have a meeting in February with so many of the guys off traveling. We do have card dealing coming up on Friday, April 3rd. That is a Circus night, but I had booked us before realizing when the Circus was going to be. Thankfully we will only need to steal a few people. Other than that night, I'm sure we will all do our best to help out with as many performances as possible to make it another wonderful Circus for Abu Bekr and Sioux City.

Until next time, don't just think spring CONCENTRATE SPRING!!

Phil Hane, President

Oriental BandIt is almost Spring! I’m sure we are all

ready to be able to get outside and enjoy the outdoors again. March is a good month for preparing ourselves to be more active outside again and this is no different for the Oriental Band.

It is almost that time again: Parade season is right around the corner. We are getting ready for our first big OB practice. It is time to get the instruments out again and get our music ready to perform for our communities. This is a great time to get started with us and take up the opportunity to become a drummer, horn player, or maybe even take a turn with the gong!

Finally, we have had some very successful food nights at the temple and that is thanks to folks like yourselves. Thank you so much for taking the time to come down and join us in a meal. We are looking forward to changing things up this March and are looking at doing breakfast instead. March 11th we will be taking over the kitchen and doing a French Toast night for the meal. If you believe there is a bad time to have breakfast, I’m here to say we would like to prove your wrong. Come on down for another great night of food and fellowship!

Andrew Gerodias

on what to write. Well for one thing, as Phil and I came out of church this morning and greeted each other, I must mention that he had the loveliest purse under his arm. There that took care of a couple of lines, if he didn’t censor this out.

food was very tasty, as the restaurant served it smorgasbord style, with a variety of meats. The meal was very reasonably priced and good. The ladies bragged up those margaritas to no end as they drank very responsibly.

Once everyone polished away their meals and the plates were stashed, we began our grudge match of bingo. All the white elephant gifts were neatly wrapped, except for four cat litter buckets approximately three gallons in size, brought by our president Patrick. I was afraid to question what was in them, as I figured it might be some recycled litter. Anyway, believe it or not, those were the hottest items going, as each and every one had their hands on them at least several times. As the items came around about for the third time it was close to nine PM, which was time for

Confucius say; - When one door closes and another opens, - you probably are in jail!

Well for starters, as Potentate Sheldon canceled the January all-unit seminar and rescheduled it for Feb. 15th, where we reviewed it and decided that it looks like he has a pretty full calendar set up for us. We shouldn’t have to worry about what to do next, - for a while.

The subject of “to drink responsibly” came up for the Divan that day and were asked what it meant to them. The unanimous decision was, “don’t spill it!”

The FP held its annual Valentine Party also Feb. 15. - Pres. Patrick reserved a room at the Campestre Mexican Restaurant or The old Green Gables. As usual the entertainment was take-away bingo. The

them to shut the restaurant down and roll up the sidewalk. My luck was, - like a bald guy who just won a comb. Everyone had a gift even if they liked it or not, while we had slightly over 20 members there. By the way Pres. Patrick had miniature rock gardens inside his buckets. We all had a great time, just like Pres. Patrick quoted, we were making great memories.

In the next few days a variety of Nobles along with their significant others will have skipped the Iowa weather as they were going all the way to Hawaii.

This is Potentate Sheldon’s designated trip. One would think that he would peel out some of that moldy loot that he carries in that wrinkled old paper bag and pay everyone’s way. But Sheldon I was given this advice, as you sit in the plane and a stranger takes a seat next to you, just stare straight ahead and say “Did you bring the money?”

Well here is the response I got from Rich Porter as I asked him what he did over last weekend. – He squinted at me and asked, - “Why, what did you hear?”

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield in Massachusetts, where she has received prosthetic services since she was a toddler.

Chloe’s mom, Cindy, used social media to ask friends and family to purchase the dolls if they saw them, and offered reimbursement. In mid-October, Chloe and her mom delivered more than 400 of these special Barbie dolls – collected through family and friends (none of whom asked for reimbursement) – to the Springfield Shriners Hospital. Mattel Inc., maker of Barbie, sent

an additional 200 dolls to the hospital. The donated dolls will be shared

with Shriners Hospitals for Children’s 16 locations with Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services (POPS) programs around the U.S., where our teams design and customize orthotics and prosthetic devices to fit the individual needs of patients. In addition to bringing joy to patients, the dolls will be used in therapeutic education and medical play for children facing amputation – and their siblings – to help explain their situation.

We are very grateful to Chloe, her mom, and the friends and families who supported their efforts. We also thank Mattel for their donation and their commitment to an inclusive range of dolls.

When 18-year-old Chloe, a longtime patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children, saw the Barbie® Fashionista™ #121 doll with a prosthetic leg, she was more than excited. “I really was like, ‘Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, finally a doll representing that segment of the population!’”

She wanted to collect as many of the dolls as she could for other kids at

us that there will be very limited space for storage of toys, blankets, games etc. at the new facility (only a 13’ x 15’ room). They do not want any toys, stuffed animals, games or books sent at this time. They also do not need clothing articles, blankets, quilts, knitted hats, scarves or mittens. Money for the wheelchair fund is always needed. After the move in June, they will assess their needs. We will not be sending any boxes until we know the needs for the kids.

The Annual Meeting will be held April 26-27. Important updated information will be available at that time.

Please remember to pay your dues of $5.00 as soon as possible. Buy your family members a membership and invite them to see what we make and sell for “The Kids”.

Members are busy preparing their sewing projects for the Circus, April 1 thru 5. All sorts of animals will be covering our table. You will see bunnies just in time for kids of all ages for Easter, puppies, unicorns, elephants, giraffes and several other items to fill Easter baskets or just to put a SMILE on a face. We always have a need for polyester fill which is a big expense in making our animals.

We have our dish rags, potholders and embroidered tea towels, both done by hand and machine. Watch for pictures next month.

How To Become A Shriner

Do you know someone who would make a good Shriner? Here is a common question they may have and a website you can pass on to them for more information.

What is Masonry and how does it

relate to Shriners International? In order to become a Shriner, a man

must first be a Master Mason. The fraternity of Freemasonry is the oldest, largest and most widely known fraternity in the world. It dates back hundreds of years to a time when stonemasons and other craftsmen on building projects gathered in shelter houses, or lodges. Over the years formal Masonic lodges emerged, with members bound together not by trade, but by their desire to be fraternal brothers.

The basic unit of Masonry is the Blue Lodge, where members earn the first three Masonic degrees. The highest degree is Master Mason. Men who wish to become Shriners must first achieve Master Mason status – that means all Shriners are Masons, but not all Masons are Shriners.
