OAKMOSS EDUCATION: NATURE PROGRAMS TO WELCOME SPRING Oakmoss Education of West Falls is partnering with a number of organizations this Spring to offer programs on gardening, wildlife and foraging concepts. These activities will share skills related to herbalism, gardening, living in harmony with wildlife, and ethical foraging. The programs being offered are as follows: “Garden Herbs For Food & Health” In conjunction with the historic Roycroft Campus, harken back to the early 1900s and the herb gardens of the Roycroft community with this lecture on Thursday, March 26th from 7:00 to 8:30pm at the Roycroft Power House in East Aurora. Various species of herbs will be discussed that can be used in cuisine, body care and supporting overall health. After the talk, participants will pot up some seeds to get them started. The fee is $15 and registration available through the Roycroft Campus at http://www.roycroftcampuscorporation.com or by calling 716-655-0261. “Gardening For Wildlife And You” This popular talk is part of Penn-Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center's Spring Lecture Series being held at the Gateway Executive Office Building at 3556 Lake Shore Rd in Blasdell. Gardening for Wildlife and You will take place on Thursday, April 2nd from 7:00pm to 8:30pm and inform its audience of strategies that involve cultivation of plants loved by both humans and wild animals. While this sometimes can be a challenge, this talk offers gardening tips and recommendations that can result in a harvest for wildlife and the kitchen table. Free for Penn-Dixie members ($5 for non-members). Registration through Penn-Dixie at 716-627-4560. “Wild Foraging And Preparation” Wild Spirit Education is sponsoring a 2-part program this Spring on "Wild Foraging and Preparation" where participants will be introduced to identifying, ethically harvesting and preparing wild plants for food and health. These hands-on sessions will comprise two consecutive Saturday mornings. The first, Field Herbalism, will take place on April 25th at the Erie County Forest Lands in Sardinia and focus on precautions, plant identification and sustainable harvesting. The second part, Kitchen Prep, will be held at Arcade's Hope Lutheran Church on May 2nd and cover home preparation and uses of wild plants. Both sessions begin at 10:00am with registration and fee schedule available at Nature in WNY's Meetup Site . NOTE: Due to the risks associated with wild foraging, these sessions are restricted to people ages 12 and older - children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal custodian.
