A Message from Mrs. Lynch
We had a great turnout for National Walk to School Day on Wednesday! It was a beautiful morning too.
Thanks to all who have attended Parent Teacher Conferences this week! If you have a third or fourth-
grader, please be sure to check Powerschool for your child’s midterm grades. K-2 teachers will review
midterms during conferences.
Mrs. Hart welcomed baby, Trevor James Hart, on Tuesday, October 4th. Congratulations to the Hart family
on their new arrival! Today is Mrs. Denkmann’s last day for a few weeks as she undergoes surgery. Please
keep Mrs. Denkmann and her family in your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. Mrs. Klopfen-
stein will be covering for Mrs. Denkmann while she is out.
Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow for conferences. Enjoy the nice fall weekend!

NOTEWORTHY NEWS
The OTES Treble Choir has started rehearsals, and we are going strong! I real-ly need a couple of volunteers to help with the talent show. One person would
be collecting the music and putting together a playlist for us, as well as attend-
ing the dress rehearsal and the performance. I also need a volunteer to tally
scores from the auditions, average them, calculate the time up to 75 minutes for
the acts and fill out the letters that go home with the students telling them if
they are in the talent show. Please email me at [email protected] if you are
interested.
I am attaching the Talent Show Audition form and an instruction sheet regard-
ing how to sign up for an
audition form.
Have a Harmonious Weekend!

ART
This Week in Art:
Kindergarten students are continuing to learn about the artist Kandinsky and are creating an artwork inspired by his Concentric Circles artwork.
1st grade students have started our unit on Vincent van Gogh and are paint-ing the Starry Night.
2nd grade students started learning about pop artist Peter Max who recently created artwork for the TV show The Voice. 3rd grade students are finishing a cubist portrait inspired by Pablo Picasso. Be sure to read about their artwork on Artsonia!
4th grade students are preparing for their study trip to the IMA. This trip will celebrate the artistic achievements of men and women who were born, raised, or worked in Indiana.
Other News:
I am looking for parent volunteers to
help hang artwork in the hallways, must be com-fortable on ladders
prepare clay for ceramics project, must be okay with getting your hands messy
create student portfolios, this can be done at school or home
No art experience required. If you would be willing to help please email me at stephen-
[email protected]. Thank you!
What a fun couple of weeks we've had in the library! Last week we celebrated Johnny Appleseed's
birthday by learning more about him! Ask your child if s/he can tell you his REAL name? Always a fun
week! This week, we have been talking about the upcoming presidential election! (Don't worry...we are
NOT talking politics or about the candidates!) We have been talking about how old you have to be to
vote, how old you have to be to become president, what a vice-president's job is, and even talked about
the electoral votes with the older students! They were really fascinated by that! Next
week, we will enjoy more of our Young Hoosier books for this year by reading some more
stories! The children always enjoy these!
Happy Reading!
Mrs. Lane
P.S. There have been several water bottle accidents, in book-bags, that have ruined
library books. I KNOW these are accidents, but please, please, please check to see if
your child's water bottle is leak proof OR maybe have them seal it inside a large Ziploc
bag?? Thanks so much!

FROM THE MEDIA CENTER
During the month of October we will be wrapping up our volleyball
skills and introducing football followed by soccer skills.
Our 4th grade students will be playing the teachers in volleyball on
Friday, Oct. 14th at 1:50 p.m.
This has been a tradition at Oak Trace since we opened in 2000.

Safety
Next week is Fall Safety Week! We will be practicing a new drill each day, including a fire drill, bus evacuation drill, and severe weather. I have also asked each teacher to talk with their homeroom about an intruder drill. Teachers will be explaining that if someone comes into our building who shouldn't be here, they will close the classroom doors (they are locked 100% of the time). At that time, the staff will listen for information and make a decision to stay in their room or leave the building. We will practice this drill during the 2nd trimester. The office staff will also prac-tice an external lockdown and a bomb threat. During an external lock-down, we will not open any door for any reason. If you come to school and we are in a lockdown, you will see a sign on the front door which ex-plains what we are doing. We'll begin answering the door bell as soon as the drill is completed. Thank you for your patience and understanding as
we work to make sure that all of our students and staff members are safe!

After fifteen successful years, the annual WWS Clothing
Drive & Giveaway is..... changing!
This year, we are excited to partner with Hamilton County
Kids Coats (www.kidscoats.org) in support of their winter
coat and winter gear giveaway on the first two Saturdays
in November. We're also excited to partner with Goodwill,
through their "Collect and Connect", program by donating
clothes in exchange for clothing vouchers for Westfield
Youth Assistance (www.youthassistance.org) for distribu-
tion to area families.
How can you help?
Drop off your gently-used coats, boots, gloves, scarves,
and snow pants at your child's school. Those items will
then be distributed to various giveaway sites across Hamilton County. You can also
drop off other gently-used clothing items, which will be donated to Goodwill, who will
then provide clothing vouchers to Westfield Youth Assistance for every bag donated!
Each of the schools will collect winter items and clothes from Monday, October 3
through Friday, October 14. To help make sure the donations get to the right place,
PLEASE label your bags/boxes (boys pants/shirts, women's jeans, coats, etc.) -- our
volunteer sorters thank you in advance!!!
In need of a coat and/or winter gear?
Sign up for a appointment to get coats and winter gear at one of five Hamilton County
Kids Coats distribution sites. The giveaways take place on Saturday, Nov. 5 (in Car-
mel & Noblesville) and Saturday, Nov. 12 (in Fishers, Arcadia, and Sheridan). Register
for a location and appointment at www.kidscoats.org/appointments. You may also call
(317) 325-8818 to make appointments. Register for an appointment/location no later
than October 15. (*Please note: Proof of Hamilton County residence is required to par-
ticipate.)
If you have questions about clothing/winter gear donations or the Kids Coats distribu-
tion events, please contact Brian Sawa, Washington Woods Elementary counselor at
867-7906 or [email protected]. You can also visit www.kidscoats.org.
Looking forward to seeing the donations roll in starting October 3rd!! THANK YOU!!
