As you work your way through cleaning/tidying/decluttering throughout your house this summer, please keep FreeStore Austin in mind. The store, located in East Austin is a mission of the Capital Area District of the UMC and provides items at no charge to its members. The store is truly an opportunity to turn your discarded items into someone else’s treasure, providing a wonderful outlet for household goods, clothing, books, even sporting goods to folks in the East Austin area and beyond. Have contributions? You can drop by the FreeStore at 1717 E. 12th Street or you can drop off items in the Missions Building at the church. If dropping off at Oak Hill, please be sure to keep the walkway clean from the front door to the hallways. If you’re interested in learning more about FreeStore or are willing to make a short drive to drop off items and be inspired by this ministry, consult the FreeStore website at www.freestoreaustin.org.

More than 20 members of Oak Hill headed to Galveston Island between June 15-19 for the spring/summer mission trip. Led by Wally Vog, local and regional coordinator of missions, the group worked in three teams – a paint team, a wheelchair construction team, and a food team. The trip is one of approximately two trips undertaken by the church annually in cooperation with Moody United Methodist Church of Galveston. Moody, working with a multi-million dollar endowment dedicated to facilities and missions, employs a full-time staff member, Cy Green, whose job is to find and screen candidates for home improvement projects, then match volunteer teams with the work. Moody provides the majority of the supplies through Foundation funds. The paint team worked on a home built in the 1840s that had survived countless Galveston hurricanes including the one in the early 1900s that destroyed many dwellings on the is-land and remains the storm that claimed the most lives. The construction team built an elaborate wheel chair ramp and stairs for a homeowner who had recently been confined to a wheelchair and could no longer leave the house without the work of this team. The food team divided their time between preparing meals for the full ensemble and working part time at the two sites. Each evening, after working and dinner, the group conducted a time of reflection and worship, capped by a Sunday morning worship service - often on the beach - before heading home. On the last night of the trip, as is the custom of the Galveston trips, the team planned a night out for dinner. This year’s location was at the outdoor dining area at a restaurant over-looking the Gulf. Just as everyone was seated, nature put on a tremendous show with a quick, but heavy downpour of rain followed by a double rainbow over the Gulf waters. Although lighter rains continued throughout the night, prohibiting the traditional beach worship service on Sunday, the storm and double rainbow served as a perfect conclusion to the trip.Community Ministries has scheduled its fall trip back to Galveston for November 9-13. Participants are invited to spend the entire length of the trip in Galveston or to participate for whatever time they can. Individuals interested in learning more about our mission partnership with Moody UMC in Galveston should contact Wally Vog or Vicki Matustik.
