THE INCREDIBLE ANGELICA BELL
WORDS: STACEY WEGER | PHOTOS: BRYAN REGAN
When I asked Angelica Bell – a Raleigh-based competitive bodybuilder – to tell me a little about herself, her response began with these statistics. But this formidable lady is more than just the numbers she uses to describe herself. She’s a force to be reckoned with, both physically and personality-wise. “Society has this stereotypical image embedded in their minds that women should be pint-sized and petite. Well...that’s just not me. Not anymore.”
Three years ago, the personal trainer was approached at the gym by a retired bodybuilder who asked if she competed. “I laughed a little and looked at him like he was crazy,” says Bell. But after seeing photos of his daughter, who was a competitor, Bell had a change of heart. “I thought to myself ‘wow I could really do this and be good at it.’”
Since I admittedly know absolutely nothing about competitive bodybuilding, Bell was kind enough to explain to me that there are 5 divisions: Bikini, Fitness, Figure, Physique, and Bodybuilding. Bell competes in Figure. “I love the femininity of the Figure division,” she says. “Sparkly posing suits, lots of bling, high heels, the hair and make-up...I’m really kind of a girly girl so the glam aspect of it is most definitely one of my more favorite parts of competing.”
Bell has to follow a strict fitness regiment to prep for a show, which she describes as the most challenging part. “Eating constantly, the manipulating of the diet, training twice a day, eventually it can take its toll on you, not just

physically but mentally and emotionally too.” She’s competed in 3 NPC shows and 2 local non-sanctioned shows, recently winning the Over All award for her division.
“Making time for the sport, work and of course my son is not as difficult as it may seem,” says Bell. She works out of the gym, and has her 4 year old son with her every day. “It’s very convenient for me actually. I get to train myself, clients, and have my little man right there with me the entire time.” She admits though, that sometimes a helping hand is necessary. “Thankfully I have a great support system of family and friends who help and encourage me to achieve my goals.”
As for her physique, Bell gets mixed reactions. Yet she maintains a healthy and positive attitude about her body, and has never felt better about herself. “I’m a strong, capable woman in all areas of my life,” she says. “Plus I find it extremely empowering that I don’t need a man to start the lawn mower (no offense guys).” Bell definitely exudes confidence, and she has some words of advice for women: “whatever it is that brings out the best version of yourself and your inner strength I encourage you to do it. I found those qualities and many more through bodybuilding.”

EVERYBODY LOVESBART CUSICKWORDS: SABRINA GALLI | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
The only thing larger than the murals of Bart Cusick is his love of creative exploration. By navigating the intricacies of illustration, the grime of graffiti and the youthful subculture of the yo-yo, Bart has made his mark in the creative culture of Raleigh, North Carolina.
You may find yourself wandering the streets of downtown Raleigh when, BAM! You come face to face with a piece of art that is quite literally larger than life. Bart’s art blends in with the city landscape and is an integral part of the Oak City creative culture.
When viewing large scale mural work I question if we ever stop to think
about how that art made its way to that building. What daring artist decided to tackle such a grand challenge? How long
did it take? Did he just walk up to the wall one day and say – “I’m going to paint you”? I recently had a conversation with Bart Cusick and asked him some of
these questions. He provided me with answers and insight that never would have crossed my mind. For example, is the ground in front of your wall stable enough to hold a ladder? Is the building going to be knocked down anytime soon? Is it visible from the street? There is so much that goes into the guts of a mural before the glory of the artwork is accomplished.
While Bart is steeped in the local urban mural arts culture he has also worked as a freelance illustrator as well as a designer for a non-profit organization where he created animated eLearning courses for adult literacy. The courses aimed to help technologically illiterate adults navigate everyday tasks like using an ATM or filling out online job applications. The program provided a game-like environment that allowed adults to play through these scenarios before doing them in person. His career, both past and present, has shown how much art can influence people on a daily basis.

You can currently find our featured artist working hard in his studio on 1115 West Lenoir Street. His recent projects include painting the infamous Kokyu BBQ truck in Durham, doing work for an Oregon based yo-yo company, designing hip hop album covers for local artists as well as illustrating and designing a “Kool Keith” poster for a recent show in Charlotte. Bart has also worked with our May cover artist, Victor Knight, on the Rubell family’s “30 Americans” exhibit at the NC Museum of Art. The piece they did was called “City Block” and was comprised of large 3D wood cut-outs with magnetic paint. Kids could create their own words and interact with the art. This piece continues with Bart’s theme of connecting people to his art – making their days a little brighter.
“I like to bring bright colors and smiles to where I live. I try to put a social statement in most of my artwork while keeping the work cartoony with a little bit of an edge“, Bart stated as we explored his approach to his art. It is clear that Bart sees interacting with art as a fundamental action of a burgeoning Raleigh culture. Excluding the Free Expression Tunnel at NC State, which is one of the only places you can still let loose, there is a dearth when it comes to places where an artist can explore in a public forum. “Raleigh could use more places where someone can go and paint and express themselves. Bringing people into the art makes it a public experience.” From digital designs to sky-high urban murals, the work of Bart Cusick is an experience you won’t soon forget.

ABRACADABRA BITCHES... IT’S MAGIC MIKE!
WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO
It’s a muggy night in May. Lanky, bald and bespectacled, Michael Casey commands the small stage at Slim’s on South Wilmington Street. Casey isn’t Slim’s standard entertainment fare. He’s not shredding power chords or supporting his latest EP. Instead, Casey is performing his own unique brand of guerilla magic. His show is rough and rude, stripped of pretense and ornamentation so all that’s left for the audience is the sneaking suspicion that they’re either observing a breach in the laws of physics or being bamboozled by a master of his craft.
Magician Michael Casey (‘Magic Mike’ to some before Steven Soderbergh unintentionally inflicted the expectation of male stripping upon his performances) excels at manipulating the physical and the social environment. He performs in bars and rock clubs, preferring intimate venues and pick-up magic in which he’ll start a show just by expertly fanning a deck of cards across a pool table. Audiences gather naturally, but there’s danger inherent in that approach. For every ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at a guessed card or sleight of hand, there’s
the ubiquitous drunk loudmouth ready to derail the proceedings.
“I like dealing with curveballs in my shows,” explains Casey, calm and smiling. “DIY magic lets me push limits. It makes me better at what I do. Sometimes people like to mess up a trick for the sake of it. I observe comedians to see how they respond to disruptions.”
This particular evening, the curveball comes in the form of a slurring, bleary-eye patron in a stained tee shirt. Magic Mike has just impressed the crowd by producing a card – signed in Sharpie by a young woman – from a fresh sealed deck. Stained tee guy – vocal from the beginning – snatches a joker off the table, scrawls his name upon it, places it in the deck and challenges Mike to produce it. The magician takes it in stride, manipulating the cards, no motion wasted. Confidently, he holds up a card. The guy squints. “Not mine, dude.” Mike tries

again. “Nope.” Casey, for a moment, seems defeated until racked with a coughing fit. Gasping, he leans over and wretches. Spittle sprays across the pool table. A soggy folded card drops from his mouth to the green felt. No one wants to touch it. Mike gingerly unfolds the dripping card, showing the room the joker with the name scrawled upon it minutes before.
Casey is philosophical about his talent. “Magic shows people there is something else behind the curtain. It’s like the concept of free will versus destiny. When someone selects a card, and they realize it was in an envelope out of my control, seemingly all along, it messes with what you think about the world. Did you choose for the card to be in there, or was it fate you would choose the card?”
The performance at Slim’s culminates with a suspenseful demonstration of choice versus chance. Four paper bags are arranged on a table. Mike selects a member of the audience to flip a coin, each flip determining the bag upon which Mike slams his hand ferociously. The first coin toss results in a deflated bag which he crumbles and discards. Two more bags meet the same end. The remaining bag, which could have been fated from any one of the preceding coin tosses, is opened to reveal the broken beer bottle, its jagged shards stabbing skyward, that had been awaiting the tender flesh of Mike’s hand.
“Sure, I was in danger,” Mike chuckles after the show. “Oh, did I mention that was the first time I did that trick?”

THE ANIMATED CAVE-MAKING ADVENTURES OF
SHERRY DI FILIPPOWORDS: HEATHER LEAH | PHOTOS: SEANO
Most caves take thousands of years to form, but Sherry Di Filippo crafted one in the middle of downtown Raleigh in less than three weeks. Using cardboard, coffee grounds, and a giant web of cord, she and her team conjured an impressively realistic Hell Cave at Bonded Llama Studios.
“My friend Johnny Gillette is a director. He asked me to do production designs for this Colossus video called ‘You Died.’ I just loved the challenge of it,” Di Filippo explains, recounting the lack of time and resources. “Can I pull this off with just these few items? In less than a month? It felt like a survival game.”
“I also made a stop motion demon that ate a bus,” she adds.
But Di Filippo does more than create random acts of nature in urban basements. Her art embraces the adrenaline rush of creation itself, the struggle to take “rudimentary materials like twisted wire and strong PVC pipe” and breathe life into them. Using mostly
“found materials,” she sculpts moving, animatronic puppets and monsters to star in stop-motion films.
“The one fewest people have seen,” she admits, “has a life-sized puppet that looks like me. It’s a play on Frankenstein, and my twin sister also has a role—as me. There’s something I like about how she slowly turns into a monster through isolation, and the idea that you have to keep some stuff a secret because it effects your survival.”
Through her series of stop-motion, animated films, Di Filippo creates mirrors through which “reality” can perceive itself, with a surreal reflection perhaps a shade darker than polite society is comfortable discussing. That unspoken conversation is where art becomes activism.
Di Filippo is outspoken about using her art to explore cultural and social issues,

passionately explaining, “I feel like people live parallel lives, where in daily life and careers we have to be careful not to share any pain or adversity or negative feelings. Like when you’re facing adverse situations in life and feel like you can’t be real. In our culture we try to eradicate anxiety, anger, and violence. But corporate life seems a little unnatural. I think sometimes my art is almost paying tribute to those unpopular adversities we can’t express.”
“I don’t want people to be angry or in pain, but we need to respect life’s duality,” she says, adding, “In that way, doing art can be therapeutic, like yoga.”
During her day job as an art teacher, Di Filippo works with many Raleigh-area teenagers, helping them express themselves through art.
“I like to explore emotional realism through surrealism,” she explains. It’s similar to how the human brain processes subconscious information through dreams. “I’d like to do a collaborative film project with lots of other local artists, writers, comedians, and musicians. I want to create a giant game of telephone, a crowd-funded navigation of each artist’s mind, creating a shared experience.”

KURT ZEHNEDERCAN BEAT GALAGA!
WORDS: RICHARD SPITZ | PHOTO: SPCLGST
Growing up in the 80’s you most likely chased a high score at your local burger joint like The Haledon Grill, at a roller skating rink over some high quality nachos, or even at Brother Brunos Pizza on Hamburg Turnpike. It’s where you had your dates, met your buddies over a slice, secretly slipped two dollars in quarters into a vending machine for a pack of Parliaments, and left your cigarette burning while you were trying to heenze your top score.
There was always that one guy that would just play forever. He was probably 13, rode a Tomos moped, rocked a full mustache with his Z Cavariccis and fresh two-strap Reeboks while wreaking of Drakkar Noir. You know the guy. He would leave you to just sitting around talking about which girl you wanted to take to the movies, or the football game on Saturday. It was the worst.
Then there was the mystery gamer that you never saw, but alway had the top score. Those three initials on the scoreboard would haunt you. Who is
this person? What do they look like? When do they even come in here to play? He probably washes dishes in the back. With that being said, I finally met one of these apparitions by chance.
I would like to introduce the world to Kurt Zehneder. He’s a master of slinging Chinese food at Fivestar and drinks at William & CO. but more importantly he has the 17th highest score in the world on the 1981 classic arcade game Galaga. Dork he is not, skillful he is, and after 2.5 hours, 3 PBR’s and reaching level 222 with a score of 2.5 million on his first quarter, I will say I was blown away. This is on his first attempt with no practice and no warm up. Although he didn’t beat the game this go around, he was impressive to not only myself, but also developed a crowd around him, equally as fascinated.
Now let’s take a step back for a moment. Does anyone remember The Last Starfighter, the 1984 not-so-blockbuster hit that never really took off? I think I may be the only person
LIFE

to ever watch it late night on HBO or something. Well, anyway it’s a story about a kid who’s playing an arcade game and becomes the game’s highest scoring player. He is approached by the game’s inventor to fill in due to the absence of one of the members of their fleet. Did I mention it was in space? Well, Kurt may be the next Starfighter. I saw the game start shaking when he reached level 222.
A few days later I received a text that said, “I’m at level 205 with 2.4 million points and still going.”
A half hour later a text came through with a very low quality picture of the final level, a crash screen, and a score of 3,020,360 points. I haven’t seen Kurt since. Fly fast and strong my friend.
Think you have the skills to level up with Kurt? Give it a shot at Boxcar Barcade and email us your best score!
