PostoperativeInstructionsFollowingHipArthroscopyforIliopsoasRelease
Generalcomments:Patientswillbegivencrutchesinthesurgicalcenter,tobeusedfor2-6weekstoreduceweight-bearingonthehip.Theprogressiontoweightbearingastoleratedwillbedeterminedbywhatisdoneduringthesurgery.Additionally,somepatientsreceiveabracethatreducestheangleofmotionofthehip.Physicaltherapywillbeprescribedandisextremelyimportanttoasuccessfulrecoveryfromtheprocedure.
Itisparamountthatyouuseyourcrutchesforwhateverperiodoftimeyouareadvised.Keepingpartialweightoffthehipisamajorcontributortoarapidhealingofthehiptissues.
Thefollowingaresomeinstructionsfortheinitialpostoperativeperiod:
1. BANDAGES:Yourbandagemayberemoved2daysfollowingsurgery.Bandaidscanbeusedtoprotecttheincisions.
2.MEDICATIONS:Aprescriptionwillbeprovidedtohelprelievepain.Pleaseusethismedicationasdirected.Thismedicationisstrong,andshouldnotbetakenwithalcoholorotherpainmedications,andmaycausedrowsiness.Exercisegoodjudgmentinitsuse.YoumayalsotryoverthecounterpainmedicationssuchasAleve(naprosyn)orAdvil(Ibuprofen).Takeasdirectedunlesstherearecontraindications.Take1Aspirin(325mg)dailyinadditiontothepainmedicationforonemonth.
3.SHOWER:Youmayshowerafter48hours.Donottakeabathorsubmergethehipunderwaterfor7days.Ifanydrainageispresent,donotgetthehipwetandpleasecalltheoffice.
4.STITCHES:Therearestitchesintheskin.After7-10dayswewillremovethesuturesintheoffice.Ifanyproblemisnotedwiththeincision,pleasecalltheoffice(860)549-8249.
5.WORKACTIVITY:Mostpeopleareabletoreturntoeithersedentaryorrestrictedworkactivitywithin1-2weeksoftheiroperativeprocedure.Generally,fullnormalstressfulactivitiesandsportsareresumedafter3-4monthsdependingontheextentofyoursurgicalprocedure.
6.COMFORT:Painandswellingafterarthroscopyistobeexpected.Thisshouldsubsideafter2-4days.Ifthefollowingdevelopandpersistafter24hours,pleasecalltheoffice:
a. Feverover101.5degrees.b. Swellingbelowtheknee,inthecalf,ankleorfootwhichdoesnotrespondtoelevation.c. Increasingpaininthehip,thighorcalf.d. Dischargeordrainagefromthewoundwhichcontinuesgreaterthan24hours.
9.FOLLOW-UP:Pleasecalltheofficethedayafteryouroperationandmakeanappointmentfor7-10daysafteryourprocedure.Youwillbechecked,yourprocedurediscussedandyourrehabilitationwillbeplanned.
