OAA's award-winning preschool embraces cutting edge creativity researchThe Oakville Academy for the
Arts’ innovative Preschool Program seizes every opportunity to provide young learners with the kinds of experiences that promote creative and divergent thinking styles that will take children deeper into the 21st century.
Using a project-based emergentcurriculum, in which children – in tandem with their teachers – decide upon topics of study, learning
unfolds in the classroom with deep engagement, sustained interest and great enthusiasm!
Shannon Speer, the program's Head Teacher shares: “We know from current and on-going research, such as that conducted by Britain's Sir Ken Robinson and researcher, Robert Fisher, that creative thinking skills are absolutely essential for success in learning and success in life. Promoting creative thinking is a
powerful way of engaging children with their learning.”
Inside the walls of the Oakville Academy for the Arts Preschool Program, there is a tremendous sense of interconnectedness that mirrors the interconnectedness of life. This is reflected in the open and flexible dialogue between the students as well as the faculty members.
Kelly Posavec, a teacher in the Preschool classroom comments: “If a project is being explored, we, as a team, find exciting ways to connect it through all program avenues – including dance, music, science, social studies and the graphic arts. This kind of collaboration is a daily part of the work that happens with both teaching staff and children.”
The Oakville Academy's cutting edge preschool and kindergarten programs have drawn attention from organizations such as TVO and the acclaimed Canadian science pro-gram, “Wings of Discovery”, both of whom have used the programs sev-eral times as an observation site for curriculum consultation and the production of training videos for educators.
British researcher, author and professor at England's Brunel University Robert Fisher states that,
in order for genuine creativity toflourish, “young learners must havecreative teachers, time to explore, experiment and play with ideas andbe supported in generating ideasthat provide opportunities for imag-ination and originality to thrive.”OAA's Preschool Program does justthat.
If you would like more informationabout the Academy’s dynamic andprogressive Preschool Program and
their broad range of creative classes for young learners, or would like to register for the 2011/2012 Academic school year, please call the Oakville Academy for the Arts at (905)-844-ARTS or view the school website at www.oakvilleacademy.com.
The Academy currently has limited spaces available in their Monday, Wednesday, Friday preschool session as well as their Tuesday, Thursday preschool session.
Submitted photoDuring a project on bears, the Preschool children attempt to build their own bear'sden using fabric and copious amounts of tape! Tape is an important resource in thePreschool room as it is easy to manipulate and provides instant results.
Submitted photoThe students negotiate and the majority decides that the den requires a window –the bear will need to look out during hibernation to see if spring has sprung!
