My dear brothers and sisters,

Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord! The gospel says that the wise men travelled from faraway lands and arrived the home of the infant Jesus, knelt down before him and brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Early Christians considered the gifts of the Magi to be highly symbolic. Gold is the king of metals and is therefore symbolic of Jesus’ Kingship. Frankincense is used in worship and is therefore symbolic of Jesus’ divinity. Lastly, myrrh is used in burials and is symbolic of Jesus’ humanity.

As we begin a new year, what kind of gift do you want to give to Jesus? Do you want to give him a gift by serving as a volunteer in the parish? Do you want to give the gift of your time by sitting in his presence?

Yours in Our Lord,

FFather Johnson

WINTER WARMUP Available for purchase all month…29 chances to win!

P

Sister Charlene is resting at the Mother House and doing therapy for her hip. Here she is resting on her chair surrounded by gifts from visiting parishioners. Thank you for any well wishes you sent to Sister! She is never out of our minds!

Breakfast is next week!! Proceeds will go towards fixing the heat register in the cafeteria. Our last breakfast was cold, with the cafeteria hitting 59 degrees!

We are out of everything to use for breakfast! We are looking for: premixed pancake mix, sausage, dried beef, eggs, juice, oil, butter, dishwashing soap and paper towels. We need these donations in order to not take out from any of the breakfast proceeds.

Please drop off any non-perishables by the old bathroom, or on the back porch of the Rectory, or, in the case of perishables, drop off at the Rectory or with Father Johnson on the weekend. Thank you for any and all help with this!

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY READINGS Reading I: Isaiah 60: 1-6

Isaiah’s prophecies here are about a new and glorious Zion restored. Foreign kings will serve her, and she will be a light to other nations. St. Matthew weaves all this into his Infancy narrative.

Reading II: Ephesians 3: 2-3a, 5-6

St. Paul interprets the revealed Mystery and makes it clear that the Gentiles also are members of Christ’s Body, and thus true sharers in the gospel.

The Gospel: Matthew 2: 1-12

For Matthew, the visit of the wise men happens amid wider political and social events. These men were often seen first as interpreters of dreams, as well as astrologers and magicians. Later Christian tradition made them kings, even gave them names and a number as three based on the number of gifts. They were understood as representatives of the Gentile world.
