INTERNATIONAL GEOSCIENCE PROGRAMME

UNESCO’s mandate acknowledges thatresearch into the sustainable development

of Earth’s Resources is an importantelement in providing UNESCO Member

States information and data to implementthe UN Sustainable Development Goals.

VISION & RESEARCH TOPIC

Enhancing societal acceptance of such sustainable development is acritical, but currently an under-researched, step in this process. Withthis in mind, the 2021 call addresses IGCP’s current vision, focused onefficient, safe, sustainable and renewable natural resources explorationand extraction and on improving the understanding, prediction andmitigation of climate change and geohazards. This vision is expressed inthis year’s annual topic:

“Enhancing Societal Acceptance of the Sustainable Development ofEarth’s Geological Resources”.

UNESCO is the only UN organization with amandate to support research and capacity in

geology and geophysics, and the InternationalGeoscience Programme is our flagship .

Addressing these themes, project proposals should focus on defining, developing and documenting case studies and best practices toenhance societal acceptance of the sustainable development of Earth’sgeological resources and explore the linkages with the UN SustainableDevelopment GoalsPriority will be given to projects aimed at understanding the legitimateconcerns of indigenous communities and the potential conflicts arisingfrom the impact of the development of Earth Resources. Proposals related to the annual topic and scientific domains butfocused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data and cloud computingmethodologies for application in the Geosciences and projects inaspiring and existing UNESCO Global Geoparks, are also welcome.

Proposals should be multi-disciplinary projects adressingthe topic in at least one of the following scientificdomains: geohazards, earth resources, geodynamics, hydrogeology, global change and geoheritage forsustainable development.

SCOPE OF PROPOSALS

Women, young and early career scientists from developing countriesare especially encouraged to apply. Proposals will be ranked taking intoaccount gender equality, geographic distribution of the leaders, projectbeneficiaries as well as their contribution to the UN SustainableDevelopment Goals. The top multidisciplinary project will receive aCouncil Award and special funding in 2022

WHO CAN APPLY?

IGCP project proposals, following the latest IGCP reportformat, may be submitted by individual scientists or by agroup of scientists. Find the project proposal form here.

HOW CAN YOU APPLY?

Project leaders are strongly advised to inform the NationalCommission for UNESCO and UNESCO Permanent Delegation of theirhome country of their application.Applicants from countries, which have a National Committee (NC) forIGCP, must submit their applications to their corresponding NC, atleast 3 weeks before final submission date to UNESCO- IGCP Office toallow time for evaluation and revision of the proposals by theapplicants if required. For the year 2021, the final submission date tothe NCs is fixed for the 22nd of August 2021.

Project proposals may be submitted to the IGCPSecretariat, accompanied by a letter of endorsement (ifpossible) from at least one of the project leaders’National IGCP Committees.
