Experimental cavern sectorisation

Due to the complexity of the UX15, the cavern have been subsectorised in order to make the patrols easier :

keep a reasonable number of patrollersminimize the time of patrols

The Cavern is sub-sectorised in patrol sectors: HO side A, HO side C, HS side A, HS side C, UPS14 and UPS16 Survey galleries, ULX14 and ULX16 galleries, UPX14 and UPX16 galleries, TE galleries, ULX15 gallery, Detector zone. The detector zone is fenced with special doors with keys. This zone will always be in closed or restricted mode and is under the SLIMOS control.

Patrol Team

The patrol is run under the responsibility of the Head of Patrol

The maximum number of patrollers is 10 SSA panel in ATCR is equipped with 10 patrol keys

The patrollers and the head of patrol are trained and qualified.

The SLIMOS’s are also trained to assist the patrols from the ATCR.

It is required that a certain number of patrollers (and head of patrols) are on duty in piquet service in case of need of a patrol outside normal working hours.

This will be set up and controlled by the ATLAS safety organization as for the SLIMOS shifts.

SLIMOS task during patrol

The SLIMOS shall call for patrol when required : End of general modeAny access system violation

The SLIMOS controls with the SSA and the FPIAA system the patrol process from ATCR.

He informs the head of patrol about event during the patrol process : door opening, loose of search, movement inside close sectors (FPIAA), any level 2 or level 3 alarm or any relevant safety issue.

The SLIMOS shall be able to contact at any moment any member of the patrol team (use a reliable communication system).

Patrol Sequence and Procedure

The patrollers first go to ATCR and collect the patrol keys

The SLIMOS shall run the evacuation of UX15

The SLIMOS controls via SSA that all Detector zone keys are returned to the Toroid Key distributor.

The CCC or the SLIMOS move LASS/LACS to patrol mode: LASS transfer to SSA the patrol mode. SSA transfer to all patrol boxes the patrol mode (except the Internal Detector Area boxes). If the Detector need to be patrolled (Detector zone search loss), the SLIMOS move the detector to patrol mode via SSA console.

The patrollers collect the safety tokens at the PAD in ULX15 or UPX16The patrollers collect the Detector Zone keys at the SSA baies in UPX16

Patrol Sequence and Procedure

The patrollers shall wear the specific safety devices (CO2 or ODH meters.

The patrollers shall be by teams of two minimum inside the detector area.

The patrollers can be momentaneously alone in the surrounding structure area provided that they follow the procedure “travailleur isole” (implicating the SLIMOS control).

Patrol Sequence and Procedure

All patrollers (10) shall first patrol the detector zone (if patrol required in this zone)

Particularity of this zone : very large and complex patrol sector ( 16 detector sectors, x platforms, x ladders, ) risks (cryogenics, radiations, working at height, difficulty to

progress inside the detector…)

The patrollers shall patrol sector by sector (the sector sequence is under study).

When a sector is patrolled, the head of patrol declares to the SLIMOS that the sector is virtually closed.

The SLIMOS shall then control via FPIAA that there are no intrusion in the “virtually closed” sectors. Estimated time to patrol the detector zone : 1 to 2 hours

Patrol Procedure

When the patrol is finished, the patrol team goes to ATCR, controls with the SLIMOS that all search boxes are armed (no door opened), put back all patrol keys in SSA panel.

The head of patrol take responsibility that the patrol has been run and the cavern is empty : he is arming the SSA global search result by turning a special key in SSA panel

The SLIMOS declared to CCC that the ATLAS patrol is finished.
