Confessions: Saturday 4 p.m. and Wednesday 6:00 p.m.
COMMUNION RITE
The Lord’s Prayer (Cont.):
“Who art in heaven” does not mean “who is somewhere else”; rather, it is an
invitation to a way of being: a way of being defined by the Father’s word and
action in His only Son. We are called to follow the example of Christ “… who
emptied himself, taking the form of a slave [and who] … humbled himself and
became obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross” (Phil 2:7, 8).
Hence, our way of being is a pouring out for one another; a living oblation.
Furthermore, heaven is not a place per se, it is a state of being; i.e., an
acknowledgement of the Father’s divine majesty and sovereignty over all
creation and its history. “His is a way of being before the beginning of
creation, and it will be His way of being after the end of time” (Driscoll). Heaven
is our future where we are destined to share in God’s way of being forever.
This future is made present now, especially as we partake in communion,
where by heaven is placed within us by the Father who hands His only Son,
body and blood, into our hands (bodies). In Christ heaven and earth are joined
together forever.

Benediction.

Please note the change in time.
I ask for your cooperation and support during the upcoming weeks. Moreover,

AROUND ST. MATTHEW
LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
Presumption can be a great sin. We can easily
convince ourselves that as long as we do the bare
minimum or master the basics, it is sufficient. Love
doesn’t operate this way. If we are truly in love with
God, then the basics are not going to be enough.
That love is going to want to get expressed in going
above and beyond, in leaving the comfortable and
familiar, in stretching and growing and in following a
voice other than our own. This is what those who are
truly in pursuit of wisdom come to realize. Just like
any human relationship worth achieving reveals,
we never reach a plateau in following the Gospel
or growing in wisdom and holiness. Wisdom is the
rudder that guides us through all of life’s attractions
and options. It alone determines what is worth
pursuing and what must be left behind. That is why
those who are only concerned about checking the
boxes and doing the least amount possible often
walk away sad when offered God’s gift of life eternal.
They are not truly in love.
INVITING ALL LECTORS/PROCLAIMERS OF THE
WORD TO A TRAINING SESSION. This includes
those who have served in the past and those who
would like to serve now and into the future. The
training sessions will be held Thursday, October 21,
7 p.m. and/or Saturday, October 23, 10 a.m. in the
church. Please choose one and mark your calen-
dars. We hope to see you there!
THE ART & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE is looking
for volunteers who are familiar with heavy equipment
to operate the lift used to place the Christmas and
Easter decorations above the Altar. This would be
an hour or two of your time 4 times a year. If you
have experience and would be willing to help please
contact Noelle St. Clair, [email protected],
785-267-5732.

NOVEMBER IS TRADITIONALLY THE MONTH WE,
AS A CHURCH, REMEMBER IN A SPECIAL WAY
THOSE WHO HAVE DIED and are now at rest in the
hand of God. You are invited to join us as we pray for
our deceased family and friends.
The Book of Remembrance will be on display
beginning this weekend and you are invited to
enter the names of any loved ones who have
passed away.
Pictures of your deceased loved ones may be
displayed if you choose. You may bring the
pictures (5 x 7 or smaller) to the Parish Office or
leave in the basket in the foyer of church and they
will be displayed beginning November 2.
A REMINDER THAT OUR PARISH SPONSORS A
WEEKLY FOOD GIVE AWAY EVERY WEDNESDAY
FROM OUR CHURCH DAYS. On average 50 sacks are
distributed to our neighbors in need. In addition, we
stock the Blessing Box that is located on the south
side of the parish property (28th Street). The Blessing
Box was added to help those who may not be able to
come to the Wednesday morning distribution. On the
third weekend of each month you are invited to bring
non-perishable food items to help stock our pantry.
As you do your shopping for your family, please
consider picking up an item or two to donate. Food
items most needed are peanut butter, jelly, canned
spaghetti sauce (no glass jars), tuna, canned fruit
and pasta. We also need donations of hygiene items.
Suggested products include bar soap, toothpaste,
tooth brushes, shampoo, deodorant, etc. Thank you
for your support of this important ministry and for
your generosity to our neighbors in need.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN
YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
If Heaven were like Harvard
There’s no getting around it: life on earth can seem
easier if you’re rich. Most of the bodily and material
needs a person could have are fulfilled if you’ve got a
little bit of money behind you. So why doesn’t this same
theory apply to entering the kingdom of Heaven?
Why isn’t Heaven like an Ivy League school, where a
connection and a hasty tuition check might open a lot
of doors?
When you think about it, the virtues required to enter
Heaven — things like charity and justice and courage —
should be even closer within the grasp of those who
never had to worry about where their food is coming
from. In theory, your capacity for good works should
only increase with the resources at your disposal.
The same is true for stewardship potential. Let’s say
I’ve got a lot of talent. Maybe I’ve got a lot of free time.
On paper, it should be easier for me to give freely of
these gifts, because I have the luxury that eluded the
widow and her two coins: I can see my ample gift being
put into action, when so many can only offer what they
have and remind themselves that God sees it and
appreciates it.
But here we get into the mess of humanity: if we have a
lot of something, it means we have a lot of something
we could use any way we want. And then we hear the
whisper of the serpent: Think of what this (money, time,
talent) could do for you.
May we pray for God to give us the heart of the widow,
no matter our resources.

EARLY LEARNING CENTER
OUR STUDENTS STARTED PRACTICING THEIR LETTER
WRITING THIS WEEK! We use a variety of materials to create
and recreate the letters. On Thursday, we used a sand tray to
practice the letter "L.” Using the handle of a paintbrush
students were able to make a "long line down and a short line
over" to write the letter, and then they could erase the letter
with the bristle side of the brush and try again!

FALL FESTIVAL CELEBRATION NEWS
This year marks St. Matthew’s 64th annual “Fall Festival Celebration,” but once again
because of the Covid-19 pandemic (with the spread of the Delta variant), this year’s
celebration will still be quite different than usual. Please mark SUNDAY,
OCTOBER 24TH on your calendar. We will once again be having a raffle, with cash
prizes, gift cards, and a beautiful hand-made quilt. And, we’ll also be serving our
wonderful Turkey Dinner (pre-order and take out ONLY). We know that people near
and far look forward to our turkey dinner and we hope not to disappoint those who
have been waiting all year.
We encourage you to help spread the word by inviting your
friends, relatives, co-workers, and all those you know to
participate in this fall tradition by purchasing raffle tickets
and ordering turkey dinners. We are also accepting
donations to help defray the cost of the dinner. If you
would like to donate, put your donation in an envelope
labeled ”TURKEYS” and drop it in the collection basket.
Last year’s celebration, even though it was very different
from past years, was still a success. We’re hoping that as a
parish we will all get behind and support this year’s
abbreviated celebration as well.
Please read through the newsletter that was mailed to your home recently for all the
important information and the form needed to order your dinner(s). If you have any
questions, please contact this year’s Fall Festival Celebration Co-chairpersons:
Emily Vanderslice (785-554-8146) and Kieth Bodine (785-266-4192).
