In 2012 while competitors struggled in small choppy conditions at Manu Bay a few competitors that had been knocked out of competition took a gamble and headed around to Ruapuke on the low tide, a tidal range that is not normally associated with good surfing conditions at this beach, what they found upon pulling over the hill were some of the best beach break waves ever ridden on these shores, and many competitors questioned why the competi-tion wasn’t held there. Fast forward a year and the 2013 Rip Curl Raglan Pro was greeted by a small clean swell on the first day of competition which meant no option but to set up at Ruapuke and churn out the junior and women’s division before the forecast macking swell pumped in. Local gurus were calling this swell, big enough

and on a unique angle that could cause waves to barrel the length of the Manu Bay point, excitement filled the air. What happened the following morning would create history for contests in NZ. Organisers checked Manu Bay at first light, which was 3-4 foot and lined up, but opted to turn their backs on the preferred venue due to the forecasted strong north east-erly and set up shop back around at Ruapuke. For the next two days the waves simply fired offering what many were calling the best waves they have competed in for over 20 years. The action was hot and aplenty and when it came to publishing NZ Surf issue 151 we simply had an abundance of epic material, so we thought we would share the rest of the all-time moments in a digi version called ‘Redux’ enjoy!

Micha Davis the current National Women’s Champ is a very pro-active supporter of the fight to save the West Coast from sand mining, and when you get waves on a West Coast beach as good as this, it makes you realise what could be lost if we lie down and

let it happen.

The rise to the top is finally complete for Tairua surfer Sean Peggs after win over Maz Quinn, JC Susan and Dune Kennings. winning the National Junior title and also the U20 National circuit title over his career, Sean’s rise through the ranks has come of age. At the recent National Champs he went on a scalp fest taking down highly fancied opponents to make the final and finish third, two months on and having liked that taste of making a final, Sean took several more scalps on his way to the final of the Rip Curl Raglan Pro. Being his 23rd birthday, the win was just all that more sweeter. Sean walked away with $3000 and a return airfare and entry into the legendary Rip Curl Padang Cup later this year.Sean affectionately known as Pegsy was ecstatic

with the win

“I can’t believe it, winning the Rip Curl Pro on my birthday. Last time this event fell on my birthday I had a shocker so this makes up for it. I was just having fun out there, it was a lot like my home break at Tairua, I was just trying to get some good waves and crank out some big turns. To gain entry into the Padang Cup is such an amazing prize, I have been hanging around that event a couple of times in the past when Bobby Hansen and Morehu Roberts were representing New Zealand and I had such a great time, I am pretty scared of surfing macking Padang though”
