32014 was an exciting year for the New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF). Thanks to our committed volunteers, generous supporters and dedicated Board of Directors, we were able to accomplish so much, which we are so excited to tell you about.

At NYAAF, we take great pride in being able to return every call that EQOGUKPVQQWTJGNRNKPGCPFQHHGTRGQRNGPCPEKCNCUUKUVCPEGCUYGNNCUconnections to other resources. However, as youll see in our data and throughout the report, the demand for our services increases with each passing year. In order to meet this growing need, we embarked on two QHVJGDKIIGUVRTQLGEVUKP0;##(oUJKUVQT[+P/C[QHYGDGICPa strategic planning process to carefully examine our organizational structure and health and to ensure that we are positioning ourselves for short and long-term success. We hired an accomplished consultant to take us through this process and we cannot wait to share the results YKVJ[QWVQYCTFVJGGPFQH

#NUQKP/C[YGNCWPEJGFQWTPGYKPVCMGRTQITCOYKVJCITQWRQHvolunteer case managers. Expanding our pool of intake case managers to include highly-trained volunteers has made our intake model more sustainable while also creating an opportunity for new people to be involved in the direct service aspect of our work and providing better services for our grantees. You will hear directly from some of our volunteer case managers in special sections of this report titled Voices of NYAAF, and were sure you will be as blown away by their commitment to abortion access as we are.

NYAAF has grown considerably since its early days of funding just VJTGGENKPKEUKP0;%9GPQYHWPFQXGTENKPKEUCETQUU0GY;QTM5VCVGCPFVJGPWODGTQHITCPVGGUUGTXGFEQPVKPWGUVQITQYGCEJUECN [GCT0;##( UVTKXGU VQ UGTXG CNN EQOOWPKVKGU CPF JCU JGNFfundraisers and participated in press and educational events to show that abortion funds exist and are here to help.

One element that remains constant in NYAAFs history is the FGFKECVKQPQHKVUCNNXQNWPVGGT$QCTFQH&KTGEVQTU+P0;##(oUOKUUKQP YCU UWRRQTVGF VJTQWIJ VJG YQTM QH DQCTFOGODGTUGCEJTGETWKVGFHQTVJGKTWPKSWGUMKNNU HWPFTCKUKPIPCPEKCN NKVGTCE[PQPRTQVOCPCIGOGPVCPFOWEJOQTGYJKEJYGTGWUGFVQITQYNYAAFs capacity and turn NYAAF into what it is today.

In its thirteenth year of funding, NYAAF remains true to its values. NYAAF believes that every person should be able to determine their own reproductive destiny and have access to the resources, rights, and respect to do so. This year, NYAAF worked toward a gender-inclusive framework: we have adopted gender-inclusive language (avoiding binary pronouns) out of the understanding that not all those who seek abortion services identify as women. NYAAFs move toward gender-inclusivity stems from the recognition that systems of oppression, including racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia and others contribute to systemic injustices in the healthcare system. NYAAF is committed to recognizing and addressing these barriers to the best of our ability.

5On the national level, reproductive rights are challenged regularly, and more vehemently than ever before. While Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land, individual states are chipping away at reproductive rights making abortion effectively inaccessible in many places. Luckily, New York 5VCVGFQGUPQV TGUVTKEVCEEGUU VQCDQTVKQP KP VJGways that many other states have there is no mandatory waiting period, no mandatory parental consent for minors, and no limitation on publicly funded abortions. Abortions may be performed in 0GY;QTMWRVQYGGMUQHRTGIPCPE[

Because of this, New York is a haven for people who come from around the country seeking CDQTVKQP UGTXKEGU RGTEGPV QH VJG RGQRNGNYAAF served this year came to New York for an abortion from another state, often from places where abortion services are becoming increasingly FKHEWNVVQCEEGUU

7PHQTVWPCVGN[ NGICN DCTTKGTU CTG PQV VJG QPN[restrictive forces controlling reproductive health care. Even for New Yorkers, abortions can be hard VQEQOGD[sPCPEKCNCPFRJ[UKECNDCTTKGTUGZKUVHQTUQOCP[QHQWTECNNGTU(QTGZCORNGCUQHRGTEGPVQHEQWPVKGU KP0GY;QTM5VCVGYGTGYKVJQWVCUKPINGCDQTVKQPRTQXKFGTCEEQTFKPIVQVJGGuttmacher Institute. The 8 percent of New Yorkers who live in these counties must travel at least some distance for the services they need.

Once a patient is able to reach a clinic, they are faced with the undeniable fact that abortion is a costly RTQEGFWTG#VNGUUVJCPYGGMUIGUVCVKQPVJGCXGTCIGEQUVQHCPCDQTVKQPKUDWVECPEQUVWRVQCVYGGMUIGUVCVKQPCPFOQTGVJCPKPGZVTGOGEKTEWOUVCPEGU6JGUGTKUKPIEQUVUcoupled with tough economic times, travel costs for out-of-state callers, and additional fees for lab YQTMOGCPVJCVOCP[RGQRNGNCEMVJGPCPEKCNTGUQWTEGUVQRC[HQTCPCDQTVKQPQWVQHRQEMGV

Many of our grantees make just a tiny bit too much to qualify for public health insurance. Even when patients have insurance, they may still be unable to access an abortion. Many private and employer-based insurance plans do not cover abortion, and even if abortion is covered, many plans include prohibitively high deductibles which must be met before the patient can access coverage. Moreover, the Hyde Amendment bars the use of federal funds to pay for abortion except in cases of rape, incest, QTpVJTGCVVQVJGNKHGQHVJGYQOCPqOGCPKPIVJCVTGEKRKGPVUQH6TKECTGVJG75OKNKVCT[JGCNVJKPUWTCPEGplan provided to active duty, guard, reserves, retired members and their families, are not covered for abortion.

6Because the Hyde Amendment prevents federal dollars from funding abortion, individual states must choose to provide state funding to subsidize their Medicaid programs coverage of abortion. NYAAF is an organization completely run by a committed network of active volunteers and a volunteer Board of Directors who keep the operation running throughout the year with monthly meetings CPFTGVTGCVU0;##(QRGTCVGUCJQWTFC[UCYGGMFC[Ua year call line that offers a judgment-free space where individuals can access information about abortion services, and can receive

PCPEKCNCUUKUVCPEGHQTVJGKTCDQTVKQPRTQEGFWTGKPVJGGXGPVVJCV/GFKECKFQTRTKXCVGKPUWTCPEGKUPQVan option. During the intake process, NYAAF collects information regarding client place of residence, IGUVCVKQPKPUWTCPEGEQXGTCIG/GFKECKFGNKIKDKNKV[CPFCDKNKV[QHVJGENKGPVVQUGNHPCPEGQTHWPFTCKUGamong family and friends for their termination.

NYAAFs main function is to help a client chart their path of access to abortion. This often means OCMKPICFKTGEVPCPEKCNEQPVTKDWVKQPVQVJGENKPKEYJGTGVJGCDQTVKQPKUVCMKPIRNCEGDWVCNUQKPENWFGUproviding information, referrals and playing the role of client advocate within a complicated health care system. We provide information about which clinics will enroll the client in Medicaid. Not many do, and KVKUFKHEWNVHQTRCVKGPVUVQPFVJKUKPHQTOCVKQPQPVJGKTQYP

Oftentimes, people need very simple things like directions to another city, price comparisons across multiple clinics, referrals for other hotlines like suicide prevention, or support for experiences with domestic violence, rape or incest. During these calls, NYAAFs board members and volunteers strive to be a supportive resource for clients.

The new intake model has helped us grow our volunteer base and reach patients all over New York State.

Historically, NYAAFs board members have been solely responsible for patient intake and for responding to calls on the hotline. However, as our call volume steadily grew year after year, that RTCEVKEG UKORN[DGECOGWPUWUVCKPCDNG5Q KP0;##(DGICP NQQMKPICVQVJGTCDQTVKQP HWPFintake models and thinking about ways we could improve our own system.
