Undergraduate Students Emory University's goal is to divert 95% of waste from landfills by 2025. ALL INORGANIC material (e.g. chip bags, snack wrappers, plastic & foil containers that have very little food on them). ALL ORGANIC materials (e.g. leftover foods, used napkins, & green utensils & paper to-go containers from Emory Dining loations). Only food grade styrofoam, used baby diapers, cat litter, dog waste. Forget single-use plastic items. They take up to 1,000 years to decompose if thrown in a landfill bin. Their size, inconsistent materials, & shape make them more difficult to recycle! EMPTY & FLATTEN cardboard boxes. Store undamaged boxes for move- out. Place ALL OTHER RECYCLABLES in the dedicated recycling space in your hall. If you need help locating them, ask your RA or SA! Bring UNWANTED BOXES & STYROFOAM to designated areas labeled "Cardboard" & "Styrofoam" outside of your residence hall. Your room is supplied with one BLUE RECYCLING BIN. Fill this bin with recyclables & carry it to the central waste station in your hall to sort into the correct waste streams. Be CONSCIOUS & INFORMED about the items you purchase! Only buy what you need & use REUSABLE bags, mugs, bottles, utensils. Avoid single- use plastics when possible. Collect food scraps & napkins in your room, preferably in a paper bag, & sort them into the GREEN COMPOSTING BINS located in the recycling room or kitchen. Emory provides collection areas for materials that are and cannot be placed in the blue recycle bins. Such bins are located in Raoul Hall west lobby & in most major buildings on campus. DO NOT TRY TO FLUSH AWAY BLUE TOILET WATER IN SELECT RESIDENCE HALLS! The water is dyed blue to mark from Emory's WaterHub, an on-site water recycling facility. Glass must be separated into it's own bin for proper recycling! COORDINATE with your roommates to avoid buying/bringing duplicate items! Consider buying second- hand preloved items at bargain prices through EMORY BUY & SELL. Pack in REUSABLE CRATES, BOXES & BAGS. Save them for Move Out. OPT FOR ZERO WASTE. Instead of packing paper & Styrofoam peanuts, wrap fragile items in towels & bedding you are bringing. DONATE sealed, non- perishable food in donation trucks, & COMPOST opened, perishable food in the GREEN COMPOST BINS. Give your unwanted items to the DON'T DUMP IT, DONATE IT Program. Bins & collection trucks can be located all over campus during Move Out. All donations benefit an area nonprofit & divert waste from landfills.
