November 10. 2019 - The 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Scriptures today are not about martyrdom or marriage but rather about resurrection to new life. The question of Resurrection of the Dead was a major dividing line in Jewish Leadership, between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Belief in the Resurrection of the Dead was a later development in Jewish Theology. The Sadducees believed that only those things that are explicitly affirmed by the Pentateuch (the Five Foundational Books of Judaism) are articles of faith. The Pharisees took the wider view that all of Scripture is an extension of the Torah, including oral teachings from Moses not explicitly written down. In today’s Gospel the Sadducees attempt to trap Jesus by presenting an absurd situation to him in hopes that this will disprove his teaching with regard to Bodily Resurrection. Jesus quotes from the Law of Moses to show that belief in Resurrection is valid. More importantly, Jesus highlights the limits of our imagination when it comes to the gift of eternal life. As St. Paul stated in his writings (First Corinthians 13) this teaching contains a mystery of faith which will only be fully revealed at the end of time.

Monday is Veterans Day, a day when we honor all who serve or have served in our Nation’s Military, both living and deceased. This weekend is an appropriate time to take up a National Collection at the invitation of the United States Bishops for the important work of Pastoral Care for our Troops, their families, Military Veterans and US Government employees based over-seas. This collection for the Archdiocese of Military Service will help assist in the vital provision of Sacramental Services and Spiritual Support by Priest Military Chaplains and Chaplaincy Support Personnel. HOW MIGHT WE THINK THE END OF TIME?

The conjunction of the Feast of All Saints Day with All Souls Day invites us to ponder the age-old question of death and the meaning of life. The inspiration for our reflection is the death of Jesus as presented in the final Gospel for Ordinary Time in the “C” Cycle – Luke 23: 35-43. Jesus dies in the manner of his living. His death is more than a self-giving act since his death continues to motivate his followers to be self-giving people. We are all souls destined to be the saints who continue to march for justice, compassion, and what is right, true, holy, and beautiful. The month of November offers us a tremendous opportunity to live grateful lives as we open our doors and tables to those who

hunger for justice and work for peace.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;to be understood, as to understand;to be loved, as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Today we remember those who have walked before us, in the hope of meeting them, of reaching the place where we’ll

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

As was noted in the bulletin recently, this is the time when we normally enter the Covenant of Sharing.

Starting this year, Fr. Des created a new Stewardship Task Force which has embarked on ajourney toward a new vision of stewardship for our parish family.

As we reflect as stewards on Christ’s passion and teachings of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, that are the foundation of the amazing ministries of our parish family at Saint Francis of Assisi, in our initial period of discernment, the Stewardship Task Force has embodied the following Pillars of Stewardship:

Through HOSPITALITY, we strive to extend a warm, hospitable and welcome to all who join us in worship, study and social times.

Through PRAYER, we grow as disciple’s who are committed through prayer, individual and communal, private and public.

Through, FORMATION, we strive to educate, form and sustain the stewardship way of life at Saint Francis.

Through SERVICE, we strive to be servant ministers to the need of our parish members, the wider community and the Church.

As the Task Force continues its discernment and growth, each of you are cordially invited to participate with us. Task Force meets the first Tuesday of each month. For more information or to get involved, please contact any of the Task Force members listed below.

Malcolm: [email protected]: [email protected] Mike: [email protected]: [email protected]: [email protected] [email protected]

Please stay tuned. The Task Force will keep you informed of its progress toward the new vision.

“...or amI to get

In vol ved ...”This Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 12:35-40) is an option with Masses for the Dead--for use in planning funerals--in our Catholic lectionary. Why? Perhaps because of the obvious theme of “being prepared” [Luke uses ‘ready,’ ‘vigilant,’ ‘prepared,’ ‘at an hour you do not expect’].

We instantly think of our own death. And certainly we need to be prepared daily, because our own death will come ‘at an hour you do not expect.’

Can you broaden your reference as you hear this Gospel? Where is there death happening in your city, your country, and somewhere else on another continent? Where is there death hap-pening because of climate change?

The challenge just might be how am I, as a follower of the teachings of Jesus, supposed to be prepared to deal with the possibilities of these deaths? Am I prepared to help prevent these deaths? How can I stand up for the justice issues that can bring peace where there are violent deaths? Is praying enough--or am I to get involved?

Church and School to Dedicate Saint Kateri Habitat November 18With the release of Laudato Si in 2015, Pope Francis challenged the faithful to actions that protect Earth, our common home. As part of a broad parish commitment to conservation and care for creation, St. Francis of Assisi Church and Elementary School are together designating our lands a Saint Kateri Habitat. St. Francis Pathways for Justice invites parishioners to join students and faculty in a brief dedication ceremony in the school garden Monday morning, November 18, following the school prayer service in the church at 8 a.m.

Catholic properties with this designation provide:

• Food, water, cover and space for wildlife and people• Native trees, shrubs and wildflowers to promote biodiversity• Ecosystem support for pollination and carbon storage• Use of clean energy and sustainable gardening practices• Sacred spaces for prayer and contemplation

Our church and parish center perimeters, the gardens in the schoolyard, friary and parish center, and our beauti-ful church together make up our St. Kateri Habitat. Saint Kateri Habitats are named for St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the 17th century Algonquin–Mohawk woman who is patron of indigenous peoples and integral ecology.

Saint Kateri Habitats are registered with the Saint Kateri Conservation Center, a Catholic faith community encourag-ing religious expression in the stewardship of creation, “in the footsteps of St. Kateri Tekakwitha and St. Francis of Assisi.” The Center addresses the religious and moral dimensions of ecology and the environment, working toward “a faithful, loving home on Earth sustaining all people and the whole of God’s creation.” Your yard, garden or farm can also be designated a St. Kateri Habitat. You can learn more at https://www.kateri.org.

We are making the traditional appeal for items to help our Step Guests such as coats (both make and female), ponchos, socks, hats, gloves, sleeping bags or money donations to purchase food items and supplies. Items may be dropped off 9am-1pm at the Parish Center, or after any Mass.

For over 21 years, the St. Francis Community has supported the Steps Ministry program. From the beginnings on front steps of the church, in which parish volunteers would stay with a number of homeless guests from our neighborhood. In the morning a simple breakfast would be prepared in Brunsman Hall.

After an agreement with the City we were able to move the ministry to the parish center courtyard where we can serve 16 guests. The courtyard walls provide our guests with se-curity during the night, and we continue to provide a simple breakfast in the morning.

Arriving at 6 o’clock in the evening the night volunteers greet the guests and let them into the courtyard. As the guests prepare their spot for the night, the volunteers offer some solace and caring connection to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Then a second group of volunteers arrive at 5 o’clock in the morning to prepare a light breakfast and provide a bit of kindness to our guests as they go out to begin the day.

It is our most sincere desire that the knowledge that the guests will have a “family” awaiting their return each evening, and ready to greet them in the morning, will give them roots that are deep enough to sustain them as they persevere in their life’s journey.

On behalf of our guests, parishioners, and the Sacramento Community, we would like to thank all those that support this Breakfast/Steps Ministry as volunteers, donors, or staff support.

Thank you!
