Specialist program focusing on aged care, rehabilitation and leadership development

Duration12 month program:• 2 x 6 month placements

Rotations Clinical rotations throughout the Rehabilitation ward and two Aged Care wards.

Nursing – Balmain HospitalA specialised aged care and rehabilitation hospital, Balmain provides you the opportunity to develop skills in the assessment and treatment of medical conditions in the older person.

It is forecast that the number of Australians aged 65 years and over will more than double over the next 40 years. Comprehensive and multidisciplinary aged care will be a priority for all health services.

Nursing – Canterbury HospitalCanterbury Hospital is a dynamic metropolitan hospital with a range of services including Emergency Department, Critical Care, Paediatrics, Acute Medical/ Geriatrics and Operating Theatres. We have been caring for our diverse and rapidly growing community in the inner west for 90 years.

Our multi-skilled staff are at the heart of everything we do, taking pride in working together and providing high quality care to our patients and their families.

Canterbury Hospital is also looking forward to a facility redevelopment to expand our services to meet the needs of our growing community.

Stream(s) offered Sydney District Nursing

Duration12 month program: based at one centre (Marrickville Health Centre, Redfern Health Centre, Croydon Health Centre, Concord Hospital or Canterbury Hospital)

Skill areas

A range of complex clinical skills including post-surgical and chronic and complex wound care, chronic respiratory and cardiac care, continence care including catheter management, hospital in the home intravenous therapy, medication and drain management and palliative care.

Orientation and support

Structured orientation program: • 3 weeks skills assessment, on the job learning,

online learning and a clinical skills teaching day• Dedicated study days

Current unrestricted NSW Driver’s Licence (P2 accepted)

GradStart Program name Sydney Local Health District

Nursing – Sydney District Nursing (and RPA Virtual Hospital)RPA Virtual Hospital is a new facility which includes a new Virtual Care Centre and a longstanding community nursing service, Sydney District Nursing. Sydney District Nursing provides quality care to patients requiring community nursing care in their home or in a clinic, using an individualised, holistic and collaborative approach. As a Community Nurse you will be working with vibrant communities in a busy urban environment to provide safe and quality nursing care to patients.

Every day will be different. You will be supported by a team of expert clinicians to provide Wound care, Continence management, Hospital in The Home – administering IV antibiotics and managing peripheral and central lines, Chronic Disease Management and Palliative Care – providing care and support for patients living at home with a terminal illness and their families.

Critical Care: Rotations include Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Burns Unit and Coronary Care Unit

Aged Care & Rehabilitation: Acute Aged care, Rehabilitation and Psychogeriatrics

General-Mental Health Nursing exchange: Mental Health and General Acute.

GradStart Program name Sydney Local Health District

Nursing – Concord HospitalConcord Repatriation General Hospital offers a comprehensive range of specialty and sub-specialty services including burns, colorectal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, molecular biology and genetic laboratory, aged and extended care, gastroenterology and palliative care. We are committed to ensuring the community has equitable access to high patient quality patient-centred care that is timely, evidence-based, culturally appropriate and efficient.

Concord Hospital is also on track to see the completion of a facility redevelopment expanding our services to meet the needs of our growing community. This redevelopment will provide state of the art, purpose built clinical care areas for Aged care, Rehabilitation and Cancer services.

Nursing – Drug Health ServicesDrug Health Services include withdrawal management, stabilisation, opioid agonist treatment, court diversion program, Needle Syringe Program including Primary Health Care Clinic, counselling, substance use in pregnancy and parenting service, hospital consultation and liaison, assertive outreach teams, community youth service and ambulatory withdrawal management.

General Nursing: Highly specialised and technical medical and surgical wards including Intensive Care, transplant, colorectal, upper GI, aged care, medical assessment, palliative care, paediatrics, renal and dialysis.

Peri-operative Nursing: perioperative unit, endoscopy, Institute of Rheumatology and Orthopaedics and opportunity to rotate in anesthetic and recovery departments.

Cardiac Nursing: Rotations through Coronary Care, cardiology wards and cardiac services.

Structured orientation program: • 5 days face-to-face • 6 days supernumerary in the clinical area• Dedicated study days

Nursing – Royal Prince Alfred HospitalOne of Australia’s premier tertiary referral hospitals, RPA is recognised as a worldwide leader in healthcare excellence and innovation. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital campus is home to the largest volume of research undertaken within NSW. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital clinicians have delivered national and international breakthroughs and innovations in clinical care, diagnosis and treatment. On completion of your graduate program, there are a range of professional development options and training programs in highly specialised areas such as Intensive Care, Emergency, Cardiac and advanced GI.

Nursing – Mental Health ServicesSydney Local Health District Mental Health Service is a specialty stream, managing and providing public mental health services across the Sydney and Inner West region.

We aim to deliver mental health nursing services which, through research and innovative commitments, sets standards that are emulated by other national and international nursing organisations. The Transition to Practice Mental Health Nursing program provides a pathway for the development of nurses so that they may acquire expertise in the management of patients and clients within the specialty of Mental Health.

Structured orientation program: 15 dedicated study days; Active preceptorship; Reflective learning debriefing sessions; Group Clinical Supervision; Workplace Clinical Skill and Competency Assessments; Mental Health Online Education Modules; Academic coursework; 4 day Personal safety and Aggression Management Training; Supernumerary day/s in the clinical area at the start of each rotation

GradStart Program name Sydney Local Health District

Nursing – Special Health AccommodationWorking within Special Health Accommodation (SHA) is an opportunity to work as part of the NSW Health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This service provides clinically supervised self-isolation (quarantine) for patients who are symptomatic of COVID, COVID positive, returning international travellers who are required to undertake mandatory quarantine and need medical support during their stay, members from the community that aren’t able to safely isolate.

Staff will develop skills in assessment and escalation of deteriorating patients, Infection Prevention and Control, Communication and de-escalation, Clinical documentation, managing patients with acute and chronic Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol and complex chronic co-morbidities.

Duration12 month program:• Based at one centre

(Tresillian Canterbury or Tresillian Nepean)

RotationsChild and family health nursing, including residential and day parenting services that includes home visiting and telehealth services

Orientation and support

Structured orientation program:• Individualised learning plan and supernumery period.

Preceptor and nurse educator support• Study days with a focus on foundational child and

family health nursing skills, infant states and cues, infant mental health, feeding and sleep and settling, family partnership skills.

Nursing – TresillianTresillian is an early parenting service offering families guidance in the early years of their child’s life in NSW metropolitan and regional areas. We support new parents around breastfeeding, nutrition and settling babies, infant and toddler behaviour, as well as supporting parents with post-natal depression and anxiety.

MidStart Program name Sydney Local Health District

Midwifery programsSydney Local Health District offers maternity services at Canterbury and Royal Prince Alfred hospitals.

Canterbury maternity is a diverse and dynamic unit providing a varied range of clinical experiences for all midwives. These include Antenatal Clinic, Birthing Unit, Postnatal Care (as inpatients and in the home), as well as a thriving Midwifery Group Practice. Our team is passionate about providing high level women and family centred care.

RPA maternity is a level 6 tertiary referral hospital providing care to women within the District as well as mothers and babies across NSW who require tertiary level care. RPA has a Midwifery Group Practice and a Team Model of Midwifery provided from the RPA Birth Centre.

Duration 12 month program: Usually 4 x 3 month placements
