Numeracy
This unit will
provide
opportunities to
talk about
quantities and
measurements within
meaningful contexts,
and to introduce
more numbers in the
environment.
Building also
encourages spatial
awareness.
Literacy
We will provide the
children with
stories such as “Fix
It Sam” and “Dig,
Dig Digging” which
have a construction
focus, together with
plenty of non-
fiction books about
the vehicles and
tools related to
construction.
Language
We will be
introducing new
vocabulary across
all three language
such as: “build”,
“make”, “wobble”,
“sturdy”, “tall”,
“high”, “big” and
small. Looking at
structures also
encourages
descriptive and
comparative
language.

BUILDING UP TO
OUR NEW UNIT...Our new unit is all about
construction!
This week we have begun our new unit,
entitled “Under Construction”. Through
this unit, we will provide the children
with a variety of stimuli and materials to
encourage them to begin building and
creating structures in a range of
contexts. At age 2-3, children may use
blocks to create (and demolish!) their
own simple structures, arrangements or
pictures. Children may begin tounderstand variations in size in simple
terms, for example noticing that one
block is “big” or “bigger” than the
others. Often children compare sizes
by talking about a “daddy”, a “mummy”
and a “baby” in groups of objects.

ART AND CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT
All the children enjoyed making a wide variety of art work for the chari
auction. At age 2-3, children become very engaged in the process of
creating art, rather than focussing on the end product. Children begin
combine materials, media or marks, trying new techniques and experimenti
with different resources. When creating art, children are often
ambidextrous; later they may display a preference for one hand or the
other. Much later in their development, children may begin to describe
what they are drawing - for example, exclaiming, “It’s a racecar!”
Ascribing meaning to pictures often happens before children begin to draw
recognisable objects.

Following Nursery’s Central Idea of “UnderConstruction” we will be listening to aselection of action songs related to buildingand working. This builds the foundations fortheir fine motor movements as well as anexpressive ability and reinforcement ofconcepts and vocabulary. In our dramaticplay we will use our imagination to buildtents and den like constructions withmaterial, blankets and pretend tools. In thegym we will focus on developing our gross
motor movement by moving more freely and making simple dances based on buildingactions.Supporting Learning in Dance and Drama
You can help and encourage the children in their learning by asking them about theirdance and drama sessions. This will give them an opportunity to talk about theirexperiences as well as giving them a chance to use their movement memory andrepeat movements they have learnt. Ongoing action songs we will be using this termare ” Gonna Build a House”, “Whistle While you Work” and “Bob the Builder”. Involvethem with any DIY you may get involved with and let them observe and be useful. (If
you have any old sheets or blankets, which we could make tents and play with, pleasesend them along). Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions orconcerns you may have.
