Unternehmen, die sich nach Simon (2007) durch folgende Eigenschaften auszeichnen: Marktanteilsführerschaft, Technologie- und Innovationsführerschaft, Umsatzführerschaft und „psychologische Weltmarktführerschaft“.
In der Metropolregion Nürnberg sind nach einer Erhebung der WeissmanGruppe (2011) rund 150 Weltmarktführer ansässig – darunter viele Hidden Champions –, die hinsichtlich der Eigenschaften weltweit die führenden Plätze 1-3 und/oder in Europa Platz 1 einnehmen.
