Ernst Cassirer and the critical science of Germany, 1899-1919 [Risorsa elettronica] / Gregory B. Moynahan revisits the work of the philosopher and historian Ernst Cassirer (1875-1945) and explores his relations with the Marburg School of Hermann Cohen. The epochal transformations of the natural sciences at the turn of the century revealed, in Cassirer's view, an emergent mode of understanding based purely on relational structure which could be further developed through the social sciences and humanities, or human sciences. Cassirer's project placed the development and critique of the sciences within an historical and ethical ambit, and from it sought to establish a new definition of experience, society and modernity. The result was a distinctly central European argument for democracy, liberalism and civil rights that was grounded on the historical critique of the construction of objects -- and subjects -- through the sciences. Ibn Al-Muqaffa' ci ha lasciato anche, tra le sue molte opere, due trattati di adab: l'Adab al-kabir e l'Adab as-sagir. Qui si presenta, per la prima volta in traduzione italiana, l'Adab al-kabir, il trattato maggiore tra i due. In questo lavoro il termine arabo adab, che esigerebbe una lunga digressione, è stato reso con "galateo", fatte le debite differenze con le connotazioni che la parola possiede nella nostra cultura e letteratura. Il perfetto segretario e uomo di corte, nel senso più nobile del termine, deve mirare alla conoscenza pratica. Deve saper padroneggiare gli umani costumi, dar prova di finezza e di garbo, saper gestire ogni cosa utile all'uomo di mondo, senza mai perdere di vista la propria integrità morale e la propria dignità di "letterato". Within a few generations of the establishment of this variety, its phonology diverged sharply from that of continental French, yet core syntactic distinctions continued to be reliably transmitted. The dissociation of phonology from syntax transmission is related to the age of exposure to the language in the experience of ordinary users of the language. The input provided to children acquiring language in a naturalistic communicative setting, even though one of a school institution, enabled them to acquire target-like syntactic properties of the inherited variety. In addition, it allowed change to take place along the lines of transmission by incrementation. The language of Robert Burns [Risorsa elettronica] : style, ideology, and identity / Alex Broadhead. - Cranbury : Bucknell University Press, 2013 ISBN 978-1-61148-529-5 This monograph offers a radical reconceptualisation of the relationship between the poetics and practice of Robert Burns and revaluates the nature of his role in the history of Scots. By drawing on ideas from twenty-first century sociolinguistic theory, it seeks to transform the debate surrounding Burns's language. Through a series of readings that explore the way in which Burns used and commented on the styles associated with different places, groups and genres, it demonstrates how languages, places and the identities associated with both are, in Burns's writing, subject to continual reinvention. In this respect, the study breaks with existing accounts of the subject, insofar as it presents Scots, English and the other languages used by Burns not as fixed, empirically-observable entities, but as ideas that were revised and remade through the poet's work. Focusing on Burns's poems, songs, letters, prefaces and glossaries, the monograph pays special attention to the complex ways in which the author engaged with such issues as phonology, grammar and the naming of languages. The Burns who emerges from this book is not the marginal figure of traditional accounts - an under-educated poet alienated from the philological mainstream - but rather a well-informed thinker who, more than any other contemporary writer, embodies the creative linguistic spirit of the eighteenth century.
