SPECIAL REGULATIONS

1.The passing of an Examination in one College does not entitle a student to exemption from passing in a subject at an Examination in the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies except on the recommendation of the College and with the approval of the Academic Council.

2.No candidate shall be deemed to have passed an examination in a language who does not satisfy the Examiners as to his/her linguistic competence in the subject.

3.A maximum of 50% of the marks in all subjects in all years of the BA programme may be allocated to Year's Work or Course Work, or Practical Work (including Field Work) or Essays or Oral Examinations in non-language subjects or any combination of these.

Final Arts courses entitled Research Projects, (Extended) Essays, or Orals shall not be taken into account in computing the 50%.

EXAMINATIONS OF THE FINAL ARTS YEAR (3BA1, 4BA4)

The results of Semester 1 Examinations will be incorporated with Semester 2 Examination results to give an overall result for the year.

Repeat Examinations

Repeat Examinations will be held in August 2012 for modules examined at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2.

Subjects: Two.

No. of ECTS: 30 per subject.

Marks Maxima: 100 per subject.

Pass Standard: 40 per cent.

Calculation of Result: The subject result is calculated on the aggregate across all component modules based on the marks awarded in those modules. All component modules to a total of 30 ECTS in each subject must be passed, or passed by compensation.

Compensation: Not allowed between subjects. Within an individual subject, component module(s) to a total of 5 ECTS may be passed by compensation at 35% or above, provided that excess marks equal to the deficiency are available in the remaining component modules of the subject successfully completed. Compensation may be allowed at both the First and/or Second Sitting.

Exceptions to the Compensation Rule: FR379, NG351, NG325, GR341, GR342, IT324, SH339, SH340. Candidates must pass these modules clearly at 40%, candidates are not entitled to pass by compensation in the modules.

Exemption: A candidate will be exempted from further examination in a subject in which at least 40 per cent has been obtained, provided all component modules have been passed or passed by compensation.

Carrying Forward Marks: Where a candidate has obtained less than 40 per cent in subject(s) the mark in component modules in which at least 40% has been obtained will be carried forward to all subsequent examinations within the two-year time limit for the completion of Second Arts. Students will not be permitted to retake modules previously passed.

Honours Standards: Honours are not awarded on the results of Final Arts Examinations.

Calculation of Honours for the BA Degree: In the calculation of honours the combined marks of the Second and Final Years in a subject or the marks of the Final Year only shall be taken into account, whichever shall be most beneficial to the candidate.

The following are the standards for the award of the BA Degree with Honours:

First Class Honours - 70 per cent on the aggregate with not less than 60 per cent in either subject.

Second Class Honours, Grade 1 - 60 per cent on the aggregate with not less than 50 per cent in either subject.

Second Class Honours, Grade 2 - 50 per cent on the aggregate with not less than 45 per cent in either subject.

Third Class Honours - 45 per cent on the aggregate.

A student who does not achieve 45 per cent on the aggregate will be credited with the grade of honours, if any, attained in one subject.

Note: There are separate pass and honours courses on offer in the subjects Mathematics and Mathematical Physics. A pass course only is available in Applied Mathematical Science. Where a candidate is taking one subject at pass level but is eligible for the award of honours in his/her other subject, the candidate will be awarded the grade of honours, if any, attained in that subject.

Commendation: The BA Degree will be awarded "With Commendation" to candidates who, having taken both subjects at pass level, obtain at least 60% in each subject.

A candidate who obtains 60% in a subject taken at pass level will be awarded a Commendation in that subject.

EXAMINATIONS OF THE THIRD YEAR (3BA4)

Time:

Courses will be examined in the host institution according to the schedules of that institution. Students participating in official placements for the Year Abroad (such as the English language teaching assistantship) will be required to satisfactorily complete the requirements of the placement and the assigned workload in their second subject.

Subjects:Two

Calculation of Results:Results from the host institution/official placement will be assessed by NUI Galway disciplines, applying ECTS criteria, and having regard to the priority appropriate to the approved courses.

Standards:Pass and Fail.

Compensation:Not allowed between subjects.

Exemption:A student will be exempted from further examination in a subject in which s/he has passed.

Carrying Forward Marks:Where a candidate has not passed in subject(s) any pass attained in modules will be carried forward to the repeat Examinations.

Repeat Examinations:Assessment in the form of Examinations and/or any of the following; Research Projects, (Extended) Essays, Projects, Essays, and/or Oral Examinations may be provided by disciplines of the University as appropriate.
