ELIMINATING NUCLEAR WASTE A Pathway to Prosperity www.eGeneration.org USING NUCLEAR WASTE INSTEAD OF STORING IT What You Should Know: A tremendous amount of energy is stored in highlevel nuclear waste. Solid fuel light water nuclear reactors (LWRs) are the predominant reactor type in America’s nuclear reactor fleet. They consume only about 1% to 3% of their solid fuel before it becomes contaminated and will no longer produce power in LWRs. Contaminated LWR solid fuel can be processed into a liquid fuel that will fission and produce power in a Molten Salt Reactor (MSR). A MSR can consume enough waste, in liquid form, and transform it into energy, to reduce present day longlived nuclear waste stockpiles by 99%. Waste from a MSR is minute, about 1%, and only has to be sequestered from the environment for 300 years. Present waste, produced in much greater amounts, needs to be sequestered for 300,000 years. Commercialization of the MSR would likely cost less than $5 billion. When compared to the $12 billion spent on the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. Currently, $28.2 billion resides in the Nuclear Waste Management Fund, and only sequestration of nuclear waste is being considered as a solution for longterm highlevel nuclear waste. Moving less than a fifth of these funds to MSR development could radically reduce our longterm waste problems. The eGeneration Foundation is working to form an alliance to develop a national energy plan, promoting the next generation of fuels powered by Molten Salt Reactor technology. As studies and analysis of this promising technology are widely understood, there will be widespread industry support for commercializing this next generation process, thus providing a clear pathway to prosperity. 1768 East 25 th Street Suite 301 Cleveland, OH 44114 216.367.0602 www.eGeneration.org The eGeneration Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational charity. USING NUCLEAR WASTE INSTEAD OF STORING IT What  You  Should  Know:

• A  tremendous  amount  of  energy  is  stored  in  high-‐level  nuclear  waste.  • Solid  fuel  light  water  nuclear  reactors  (LWRs)  are  the  predominant  reactor  type  in  America’s  nuclear  reactor  fleet.  They  consume  only  about  1%  to  3%  of  their  solid  fuel  before  it  becomes  contaminated  and  will  no  longer  produce  power  in  LWRs.

• Contaminated  LWR  solid  fuel  can  be  processed  into  a  liquid  fuel  that  will  fission  and  produce  power  in  a  Molten  Salt  Reactor  (MSR).

• A  MSR  can  consume  enough  waste,  in  liquid  form,  and  transform  it  into  energy,  to  reduce  present  day  long-‐lived  nuclear  waste  stockpiles  by  99%.

• Waste  from  a  MSR  is  minute,  about  1%,  and  only  has  to  be  sequestered  from  the  environment  for  300  years.  Present  waste,  produced  in  much  greater  amounts,  needs  to  be  sequestered  for  300,000  years.

• Commercialization  of  the  MSR  would  likely  cost  less  than  $5  billion.  When  compared  to  the  $12  billion  spent  on  the  Yucca  Mountain  nuclear  waste  repository.

• Currently,  $28.2  billion  resides  in  the  Nuclear  Waste  Management  Fund,  and  only  sequestration  of  nuclear  waste  is  being  considered  as  a  solution  for  long-‐term  high-‐level  nuclear  waste.  Moving  less  than  a  fifth  of  these  funds  to  MSR  development  could  radically  reduce  our  long-‐term  waste  problems.
