Tere will be a lot to like about the 55th Annual NuChapter Christmas Luncheon on December 11. So manyhanges have been made that we have practically reinventedhe popular aair.

Since we let the tradition o Founders Day to the ActiveChapter, this is the closest thing we have to a banquet, so we

ave planned an event whose location and cost are expectedo attract many new Fraters, making this the greatest comingogether o Nu Chapter ekes.

Mark your calendar or Friday, December 11, becauseven the day o the week is changed. We will be at Hs.

Lordships Restaurant on the Berkeley Marina, site oeveral happy banquets o years past. Everyone liked theumptuous surroundings o the orch Room, and the view the Campanile across the estuaryon the campus wheret all began.

Te cost is $45, down rom $64 last year; drinks areess expensive, and parking is ree. Well begin to gatherbout 11:00 or 11:30, and drinks may be ordered at the bar, djacent to our room, so we can begin socializing as soon as

we arrive.Lunch will be a buetnot cold cuts or peaches and

ottage cheesebut a ull array o entrees and side dishes.Red and white wine will be on each table. Te ladies, whosewn buet will be a more modest $30 (because they do notequire a banquet room) will be seated at their own specialable in the dining room, and will join us ater lunch or

more visiting and perhaps serenading by some members ohe Active Chapter who will also be present.

Attire, as usual, is dressy, or reasonably so.Te Berkeley Marina is more convenient to the greater

umber o alumni, and it is elt that the change to Fridaywill be more attractive to those who wish to make a weekend

ut o it.Frater Peter Cloven is coordinating the event. He

must have all reservations and checks by December 4. Aeservation orm is in this issue. Dont miss this. Its goingo be huge.

Dear Alumni,au Kappa Epsilon is o to another antastic semester and year

Tere are so many great things happening at the house right now thaare making KE one o the best houses on campus. KE is growinquickly with the right kind o men that will help continue to builo o what KE has become and push au Kappa Epsilon to its nexlevel.

Right now, KE is one o the biggest, i not the biggest, house ocampus with sixty-three active members. On o top o that, we hav

just inducted seventeen pledges who are looking orward to joininthe house and becoming Fraters in KE. Tat is eighty memberTis semester was the rst semester that we were not able to providhousing or all o the members that wanted to live in. On the one hanthat is unortunate, but on the other hand it shows that KE is stronand ourishing in the Greek community.

Academically, KE is also among the strongest houses. We werjust ranked 5th best GPA on campus out o the 36 raternity housein IFC. Last semester we hit the books hard and achieved a 3.35 GPAcollectively as a house. Our goal this semester is to boost this GPA

rating another .05 points to hit an impressive 3.4 GPA as a houseTe work ethic o the brothers right now is phenomenal and I see ureaching our goal i not surpassing it.

Philanthropically, Nu Chapter and Nationals are now partnerewith St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. Our Philanthropy Chahas already started getting the ground work to do a joint philanthropevent with the ri Delts who share the same philanthropy. On top othat, we are looking orward to another antastic Battle o the Bandevent!

Te bottom line is that it is a great time to be a KE. Te NChapter o au Kappa Epsilon is thriving right now and we ar

I had an editorial all written, and I have to tell you, it sucked big time. T

the submissions or Nu News rom the Active Chapter arrived on my comp

    yesterday.

    Magic!

So I scrapped what I had written and started anew. What ollows -

message to the Actives - is inspired by their contribution:

You guys amaze me. Absolutely amaze me. How did we get so lucky

just a ew pages, you took me into the past and thrust me into the uture.

jerked my emotions all over the place.

You piqued my memory: Tere was the night I pledged. We had gon

see Kismet in San Francisco in a 1926 Buick. Tere was my rst room

the third oor, west side, which happened to provide a stunning view in

bedroom o the girls dorm next door. And there was that aternoon, when I

Hegemon, my beloved pledges kidnapped me (almost). Pinned between

men in the back o a Ford convertible, I leaped into the ront seat, snatched

keys out o the ignition and threw them up onto the balcony o what was the AGD sorority across the street. It was my nest hour. And there were

serenades. Te eke songs. Te eke Band. Te RFs*. All o it good. Som

us call it the old house.

Fast orward ty-plus years. So much has changed, but so much rem

the same. You have made astounding changes, yet the old house still lives.

best o both worlds conronts me when I visit. It is surrealhauntingly am

on the one hand, but strangely new on the other. You have learned well

the past and you are enhancing eke lie in the present.

Abraham Lincoln said, I like to see a man proud o the place in whic

lives. Your loving care o the House speaks eloquently to that pride

As I read o your scholarship, the other-centeredness o your philanthr

eorts, your diverse academic majors, the breadth o your interests, and

intensity with which you express your hopes and dreams, I am overwhelm

Surely the uture belongs to each and all o you.

Tank you. You rock my world.

Tis all 2009 semester is looking bright here at KE-Nu,nd this all pledge class only seems to enhance our anticipation.

Ater another successul rush, our 16 person pledge class looks to

ontinue our trend o steadily increasing numbers. oday we arene o the largest raternities on campus, and we are proud to havealanced these numbers with quality membership. We believe thisledge class will be no exception.

Its still early in the pledge season, but Peter Clovens two-and--hal year tradition o Bonding Night was successul as usual,nd the group appears to be getting along rather well despite theclectic mix o backgrounds, personalities, and age-groups.

Tis week, the pledge class will be electing their ofcers. Imxcited to see the leadership begin to emerge rom this point. Itstill early in the process, but I believe this group has some promisingotentials or not just their pledge class, but or the uture o the

raternity. I believe au Kappa Epsilon is in great hands and I amondent these men will shine in the pledge process and onlyontinue as they hopeully become brothers in the bond.

Beginning my second semester as KE-Nus Histor, I eel thatam in a prime position to eect change in the uture o thisraternity by continuing our connection to its past. Tis semester,am excited to expand our house-sponsored alumni events romne to three and give the active Fraters a better chance to learn

more about our esteemed alum and connect with them on aersonal level. I hope that this expansion o events will go wellnd will continue with each Histor who succeeds me.

Troughout the summer, the brothers at KE worked torganize the study library by creating an online, searchable catalogue all the texts we own. Te study library is also now organized by

Dewey Decimal numbers, to make it more easily accessible to thehapter. We hope that this change will not only save brothers

money but will also encourage each other to urther investigate

exts with similar inormation that our classes require. I also amurrently working to compile old exams and study materials inton online study bank, so brothers are more prepared or midtermeason. In addition, I have been holding study hours throughouthe week with both brothers and pledges, all with the intent o

maintaining KEs high standards o academic excellence. Wehope that these changes will continue to push KE-Nu into higherGPA levels as we strive or our pre-set goal o a 3.4 chapter GPA.

Greetings, Im ed Rothenberg and Im the PhilanthropyChair or this all semester. Weve already hit the ground runninghis semester, and there are a lot more philanthropy events in thelanning. Just last week we hit o the year with our rst event, articipating in the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association. During

his event we helped build pathways in the Berkeley hills to enableasier access between streets. It was quite a demanding workout, digging and carrying soil up steep hills, but in the end, those who

articipated beneted rom the great amount o collaboration andamaraderie that was established. Te next event our house will benvolved in is the Berkeley Project Day 2009. During this event, tudents and volunteers rom all around Berkeley gather aroundhe city to participate in community enrichment, greening, andity works. Tese activities range rom cleaning the streets o trasho removing grafti on buildings to planting trees.

As you all know, the new recipient organization o KEsnational philanthropy undraising is St. Jude Childrens Research

Hospital. I am in the process o planning out, either or this semesterr or spring semester, a Letter-Writing Party in which brothers

will write letters to amily and riends requesting donations or St.udes. Ater attending a St. Judes collegiate seminar in Memphis,

N this past summer, I learned that these Letter-Writing partiesre a very eective way o raising money or the cause.

Te biggest philanthropy event that our house will be personallyhrowing this semester is the second annual Battle o the BandsBOB). Tis event attracts masses o people rom all over theampus, including people in and outside o the Greek System. It
