Galatians is Pauls angry letter

Paul is very frustrated at the Galatians and others

Written sometime around 45-55 AD.

Galatia was a region of the Roman Empire.

Paul had previously passed through Galatiaand established churches.

Other Christian missionaries (we dont knowwho) came after Paul and taught things thatPaul didnt agree with.

More than that, they taught things that madePaul extremely angry.

Many Galatians began to doubt Paul, and tobelieve the new missionaries.

Its complicated

1. The Law of Moses called for certaincommunity badges as an indicator ofGods covenant people

- Circumcision, special calendar, other unique things

2. Paul believed, and taught, that thosepractices were no longer necessary. They were

not part of the gospel of Christ.

3. The early Christian community was split overthe question. Other Christians believed thatsome aspects of Judaism should remain inChristianity.

- Circumcision was the most controversial.

4. What were non-Jewish (Gentile) converts toChristianity to do? Should they be circumcised?

5. After Paul left Galatia, other Christianmissionaries came and taught that the convertsshould be circumcised.

1:1-5 opening statement 6-9 Paul curses the other missionaries

The competing missionaries may havechallenged Pauls authority

11-12 Pauls message comes straight from God!

Paul confronts Peter (Cephas) because: Peter dined with Gentile converts

Certain messengers from James came to visit Peter was embarrassed, and stopped eating

with them (probably b/c of kosher laws).

Justification: To be made right with God.

to be accepted into a covenant relationship with God,which can lead to salvation if faithfully maintained.

15-16 justification comes by faith in Christ,

not by the Law of Moses
