AN OPEN LETTER TO:The Hon. Denis Napthine MP, Premier of Victoria, and The Hon. Daniel Andrews MP, leader of the Victorian Opposition, from the Whittlesea Community Futures Partnership

For decades, the scourge of family violence was hidden behind closed doors. Family violence in our community has been, and always will remain, unacceptable. It requires a firm commitment to bring lasting change and more respectful and equal, violence-free relationships between women and men.

We commend you for your contributions to putting the spotlight on family violence. We welcome the commitments you have both made to reduce the incidence and impact of family violence.

But over and above this, in growth areas such as Whittlesea there is significant catch-up work to do.

The rate of family violence has grown exponentially in our municipality since 1999, with a 249 per cent increase in reported incidents in that period. We have reached a critical new high of 1316 incidents per 100,000 people.

Every week, there are 45 incidents of family violence reported to police.

There has been a 15 per cent increase in the rate of children present in family violence incidents in the past 12 months.

We also draw attention to the urgent need to attend to cultural diversity

Men of the Whittlesea Community Futures Partnership say no to family violence. (Damjan Janevski)

within specialist family violence services in a municipality in which 34 per cent of residents were born overseas and more than 40 per cent speak a language other than English at home.

While major system changes together with shifts in community attitudes and behaviours are required, historical funding shortfalls for front-end response services and inadequate investment in prevention means that there are also pressing here and now issues in the City of Whittlesea one of the fastest- growing communities in Australia.

A need for co-ordinated and evidence-based programs to stop the cycle of violent behaviour by perpetrators cannot be ignored.

We ask you to stand with us as we say No to Violence in Whittlesea.

Specifically, we call for a $1.1 million commitment that will be directed to: Programs to increase the safety and well-being of culturally diverse women and children; Whole-of-school respectful relationships education programs to prevent violence occurring in the first place and build positive attitudes in young people; Specialist family violence services for women and children; and Intervention and behaviour change programs for men aimed at stopping the cycle of violence.

Yours sincerely, Whittlesea Community Futures Partnership

A British restructuring company has bought Broadmeadows-based sweets manufacturer Betta Foods and guaranteed it will retain all 160 staff.

Hilco Capitals international investment arm Re:Capital acquired the business for an undisclosed sum and plans to market Betta Foods popular Capricorn liquorice and Eskimo chocolate snowballs to a global market.

Both products are sold in Coles, Woolworths and Aldi stores and contribute to the companys annual turnover of about $40 million.

Betta Foods is Re:Capitals third acquisition in Australia, following its purchase of carpet retailer Allied Carpets in 2009 and chocolatier Ernest Hillier in February.

Re:Capitals global chief executive, Paul McGowan, says the company is eyeing off more Australian businesses with potential for expansion.

We believe there are enormous opportunities for specialist confectionery manufacturing businesses in Australia as demand increases, he said.

Ernest Hillier chief executive Mark Campbell said the chocolatier and Betta Foods would combine their resources and market themselves to a wider clientele.

We have a very defined strategy. We want to contribute to Australia becoming the worlds delicatessen, Mr Campbell said. We see a tremendous future.

The handover from Betta Foods previous proprietor, Alex Sloan, took place on October 18.

Mr Campbell said not only would every staff member keep their job, but there were plans for expansion.

Part of our strategy is to employ local people, young people, refugees and the unemployed, he said.

Mr Campbell will work in partnership with Glenroy-based Youth Projects, an agency that supports people experiencing hardship such as disadvantage, unemployment or drug-addiction.

Youth Projects board chairwoman Melanie Raymond said Re:Capitals acquisition of Betta Foods was very welcome news, and she called Mr Campbells approach to local employment a game changer.

Weve had about 20 unemployed young people land secure and meaningful jobs at Ernest Hillier, she said.

Re:Capital have committed to local jobs and this sets a benchmark for other employers in the area about the natural talents at their doorstep.

Too often people see the northern suburbs as a basket case, but theres potential for business success, Ms Raymond said.

    Sweet deal for Betta Foods

Kimberly Smyth saw her redundancy in 2012 as a blessing in disguise.

The Mernda resident had worked at Fairfaxs printing plant in Tullamarine as a print press operator for 10 years before the media organisation decided to downsize and shed almost 2000 jobs.

Faced with the daunting prospect of unemployment, the mother of four decided to fulfil her life-long dream and enrolled in a plumbing pre-apprenticeship at NMIT in Heidelberg.

It was impossible for me to do a trade when we had young children, but I never let go of the idea of opening a female plumbing business, Ms Smyth said.

That dream came true just months after her redundancy when she started her business Hey

Sista Plumbing, which she co-owns with her husband, a practising plumber since he was 18.

Ms Smyths persistence in breaking into the male-dominated trade hasnt gone unnoticed.

This month she was one of 25 hardworking and dedicated apprentice plumbers across Australia to receive a $1000 grant under the Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants program.

The grants are awarded to people most in need of financial assistance and are designed to help apprentices pursue their plumbing career.

Ms Smyth, 33, says her grant will go towards her trade school fees.

Shes hoping to expand the business next year when her youngest starts school, and hire another one or two female plumbers preferably mothers.

Mernda musician Suzanne Kinsella cites leather-clad rocker Suzi Quatro as an inspiration and an obvious musical reference.

While the 31-year-old music teacher doesnt always perform in a figure-hugging jumpsuit, she is a singer, songwriter and bassist who describes her music as less rock and more alternative pop.

Kinsella will debut her first solo album, The Conversation, at The Toff in Town on November 16. The album has been a two-year labour of love for the Ivanhoe Grammar Plenty campus teacher, who has worked full-time while writing and producing each track herself.

Its been a real coming-of-age experience, especially working full-time, she said. The creative process is a walk in the park, but all the other stuff booking studios, promotion has been really hairy.

But it was important for me to work. I saved up to do this.

Memories of conversations with close friends and family have been spun into tracks, hence the album title.

Asked to elaborate on her style of music, Kinsella cites a few familiar names in the Australian music industry.

A bit like Sia, but more of the alternative side and Rufus Wainwright, with vocals like Sarah McLachlan, she said. But, really, Ive tried to create my own style.

Before taking the plunge to work on her own career, Kinsella performed with and wrote for a number of high-profile artists, including Gotye, Deborah Conway, Jess McAvoy and Liz Stringer. She will perform at The Toff in Town, 2/252 Swanston Street, Melbourne, on November 16, 8pm. Tickets can be bought online or at the door.

Legs eleven took on a whole new meaning last Tuesday night when male and female strippers performed to a packed house of gamers at Thomastown Bingo Centre.

Whittlesea council is investigating whether the bingo centre breached its planning permit by organising strippers for the nights hens party theme.

The council would not comment on whether strippers were appropriate entertainment and said it was looking into the scope of the venues permit. What penalties or consequences a breach would call for were unknown as of late last week.

Councils established areas planning assistant manager, Murray Ness, said a planning permit was issued in April 2012 for the bingo centre.

There is no permission for strip shows, or similar, within the scope of the permit, and no such activities were contemplated in the application for the permit, he said.

Thomastown Bingo Centre managing director Doug Willmot was bemused the event had attracted so much attention.

It was just a night of a lot of fun, he said. We had about 600 women attend.

Male strippers Magic Night performed, followed by female strippers for the men during an interval.

Mr Willmot said the centre had a town planning permit from the council to run the bingo centre, and a gaming permit for five days of the week.

The National Australia Bank analyst is also a carer for his older brother David, who has cerebral palsy, a volunteer with the State Emergency Service and online manager at community broadcaster SYN media.

To top it off, the 22-year-old was last week chosen as the Victorian ambassador for National Youth Week next April.

Youth Affairs Minister Ryan Smith said Mr Casha had been selected for the role because of his outstanding contribution to the state

Mr Smith said Michael would play an essential role in planning and promoting events for young Victorians.

Mr Casha is excited about his new ambassadorial role, with the theme for next years festival being It starts with us.

He said his own community journey had started with following in his mothers footsteps. She volunteered with the SES for more than 30 years, and Mr Casha signed up aged 16.

He is also a tireless promoter of family carers, who often get no financial support if theyre

not a persons primary carer. Mr Casha said he was initially drawn to SYN radio as an outlet to advocate for people with a disability, and for more than a year he had a weekly segment about the hurdles faced by people with a disability and their carers.

In the run-up to next years event, Mr Casha is urging people and community groups to get involved in Youth Week and youth issues.

Funding of up to $1000 is available for organisations hosting events that bring young people together.

A bout of squally weather has led to a spike in dogs and cats being admitted to an Epping animal shelter.

Epping RSPCA shelter manager Liz Walker says the shelter issues warnings when extreme weather is forecast to remind pet owners to be mindful of their furry friends.

Severe wind frightens animals and blows open gates that may not be as sturdy as they should be, she said.

Ms Walker said most of the recently admitted animals were being collected within 48 hours.

The latest statistics for the shelter show fewer dogs were admitted to it during the 2013-14 financial year than in the previous year, and there were also more dogs reclaimed.

Between July, 2013, and June, 2014, 1601 dogs were admitted, compared with 1642 the year before.

And 1075 dogs were reclaimed in 2013-14, up by just six on the previous year. Sadly, 54 were euthanised in 2013-14 11 more than in 2012-13.

Admissions of cats in the 2013-14 financial year were up by 145, from 1401 to 1546, which was of particular concern for Ms Walker.

People are moving into the area and are not desexing their cats, she said. And as there was an established population of strays, this only added to the problem.

She said the rate of reclaiming of cats was extremely low, ranging from 5 to 8 per cent.

Whittlesea council staff members are doorknocking in new residential estates to educate and advise pet owners about their responsibilities and the benefits of having their animals registered.

Ill winds a blow for pets

In the past 12 months, the council has investigated six cases of abandonment, which involves residential tenants leaving their pets behind.

If you find a lost dog or cat, contact the council and ask to be put in touch with the

animal management or locals laws section, which will advise what needs to be done next.

Under the Domestic Animal Acts 1994, all dogs must be securely confined to properties. Contravention of the law can result in an on-the-spot fine of $221.

There are not too many businesses out there who make giving back to the community one of their top priorities, but thats what Whittlesea Bowls Club does.

As well as providing a place for locals to get together for a game of lawn bowls or dine out with loved ones, the club is known for its generosity.

We recently initiated the Whittlesea Bowls community benefit program aimed at providing assistance to Whittlesea residents, projects and organisations,

manager Bernie Walker says. For the 2013-14 financial year, we distributed more than $72,000 among 27 different organisations and individuals, including $10,000 for the leasing of the Whittlesea area community care and assistance bus.

The club also donated an insulin pump to a Whittlesea resident, supported many fundraisers and provided financial assistance to community members with health issues. This was above and beyond its sponsorship of sports and community clubs and buying equipment for them.

Club finds way to give backBernie says that for the 2014-15 financial

year the club has already distributed more than $18,000.

As well as helping out locals, the club has plenty to offer visitors, including two well-maintained greens, a large bistro open daily from noon to 8.30pm, and two function rooms with free wi-fi available for conferences. Tuesdays are ideal for families as kids meals are free, and Wednesdays are pot and parma night, with plenty of different toppings to try. Members benefit even more than usual on Thursdays

with a special night featuring plenty of entertainment and prizes to be won. Friday mornings are popular, with free bingo and a cash jackpot to be won. Keno and TAB facilities are also available.

Were always on the lookout for new members, Bernie says.

Dimattina is an instantly recognisable name in the coffee world. The Dimattina family are pioneers of Melbournes coffee revolution, beginning in the 1950s with a commitment to sourcing beans from proven growers and roasting them in the best equipment on the market.

The Reservoir outlet began in 1998 as a warehouse, selling a wide range of beans roasted on a 30-kilogram Probat machine.

Nowadays, Dimattina Coffee Reservoir manager Mirella Bettiol says an upsized Probat roaster is producing blends from beans grown in Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil, Nicaragua and Ethiopia; there are also single origin beans and Fair Trade organic blends.

Our biggest seller is our Prima Tazza, a rich, smooth and flamboyant blend of the five highest-grade beans from estates in Central and South America, New Guinea and Asia, Mirella says. In fact, Dimattina coffee was the overall winner at the 2011-12 CSR Golden Beans award.

The business has expanded from warehouse sales to a cafe, where coffee lovers can enjoy biscotti, chocolates and other European sweets, as well as focaccias, toasted sandwiches, wraps, boreks, Christmas hampers and panettone.

Its also the place to buy domestic espresso machines, cafetieres and barista equipment. Our Edwardes Street outlet has become an icon for fresh roasted coffee in the northern suburbs, Mirella says. We have regulars who visit us to pick up their special blends for home.

The team at the coffee outlet is a friendly and chatty bunch and, most importantly, knowledgeable about coffee and helping customers find the blend for them.

  • Built to display home standards and still under builders warranty, this year-old residence on about 448 square metres has all the looked-for extras that dont come with a standard build. Floorboards in the living hub, juxtaposed with crisp white walls, put on a fine display in the casual living areas, while soft-grey carpet in bedrooms and other living spaces add the necessary comfort and windows all have streamlined roller blinds.

Its the well-considered design touches that elevate this house, such as a horizontal cavity in the family room providing a glimpse into the study nook which allows parents a peek at what the kids are watching; the 2.7-metre ceilings; stone benches; and porcelain tiles.

A carpeted lounge room near the front door is the spot for adult retreat when entertaining. The sleek kitchen, under a downlight-studded dropped ceiling, is

all-white with a latte accent in splashback tiles; it has an island bench, a brilliant walk-in pantry and a 900mm cooker under a canopy rangehood.

The main bedroom, off the entry hall, has a chic en suite with loads of storage in a dual-basin vanity unit. Three other bedrooms (with robes) are down the back and flank a gleaming bathroom and separate toilet. An integrated outdoor room has concrete underfoot that extends

out into the compact backyard; no mowing on this block because all garden areas have very low-maintenance plants dotted among river stones.

Controlling the indoor climate will not be an issue, with four split-systems and ducted heating, while a solar system of about 5KW offsets energy costs. The property also has a double garage.
