Hospital closureHealthe Care Australia closed its doors at LaTrobe Private Hospital at Bundoora on Friday night. The group’s lease over the premises at LaTrobe University was due to expire next year with no rights of renewal, but the board decided to close on August 29. It is believed up to 150 jobs could be lost and there is likely to be economic damage to the viability of local health providers servicing the 100 or so theatre operations performed at the hospital each week. Full story at www.northern.starweekly.com.au.

State to allow cannabis trialsDrug laws will be amended to make it easier for doctors to conduct clinical trials of medical marijuana, Health Minister David Davis announced last week. He said the Coalition government might also consider permitting the cultivation of narcotic plants for medical use. Critics say Mr Davis’s promise will change little, considering a cannabis pharmaceutical, Sativex, is already being used in clinical trials in Australia. The government’s announcement follows Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews’ pledge to decriminalise medical marijuana if Labor wins the November state election.

Do you know about Anna?Police have again appealed for public help to determine what happened to Annastaes (Anna) Banitskas, who was 15 when she was last seen in Lalor on August 27, 1974. Anna left home to catch a bus at nearby Kingsway Drive to go to work but never arrived. Detective Senior Constable Craig Hall invited the

public to come forward with information for Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Boy, 17, charged after car chaseA Lalor teenager was arrested following a police chase from Altona North to Lara on Thursday night. Police say the 17-year-old boy, two 15-year-old girls from Craigieburn and Truganina, a Werribee girl and a Reservoir boy, both aged 13, were in a stolen red Nissan Pulsar which failed to stop for police at Blackshaws Road, Altona North, about 9.25pm. The chase ended in Lara and the car’s occupants tried to flee on foot but were later apprehended. The Lalor teen has been charged with several offences, including reckless conduct endangering life, driving while suspended and theft of a motor vehicle. He was remanded to face a children’s court. The young passengers were released pending further inquiries.

Calling all young snappersEntries have opened for Hume’s fourth annual youth photography competition. The competition is open to youth living or attending a school in Hume, and its theme, How do you see it?, offers a dynamic and thought-provoking medium to express their perspectives. Budding young photographers can also attend free digital photography workshops at Sunbury library from 2-3.30pm on September 24; Broadmeadows library from 11-12.30pm on September 26; and Craigieburn library from 3-4.30pm on September 26. The competition runs until October 5, with winners named on October 22. Visit www.humelibraries.vic.gov.au.

Whittlesea and Hume councils have unveiled a new campaign to tackle obesity, which affects more than half the residents in each municipality.

The public education campaign, LiveLighter, is funded by the state government and aims to educate people about the risks associated with being overweight or obese and help them make simple and lasting changes to their lifestyle.

Recent Health Department findings suggest 55 per cent of Whittlesea’s and 58 per cent of Hume’s residents are overweight or obese.

Whittlesea mayor Mary Lalios urged all residents to make use of the campaign

“More than 55 per cent of adults in Whittlesea are overweight or obese, putting them at greater risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer,” Cr Lalios said.

Snap Fitness Epping personal trainer Paul Di Bella changed his life about two years ago and shed a mammoth 45 kilograms.

“Before, I was depressed and didn’t want to go anywhere; I didn’t want to go out,” he said. “I’m full of energy now and I can’t wait for summer to show off my new body.”

Mr Di Bella will run free personal training sessions from 8.30-9.30am every Saturday from September 20-October 25 at White Light Avenue Park.

Councils are looking for local champions to front the LiveLighter campaign and help spread the message throughout the community.

Quality family time takes precedence over dirty dishes in the Williams’ home.

Christian Williams, 40, has been battling a malignant brain tumour for more than three years, but doctors have told him there’s little they can do for the Epping father now.

Mr Williams has been told he can expect only 12 months to live, but he’s committed to living that life to the fullest.

“We’re obviously trying to make the most out of life as we can and make as many memories as we can,” his wife Francis Zois said.

Friends, family and strangers are crowd-funding so that Mr Williams can be granted his wishes to make lasting memories with his two sons, Anthony, 3, and Theodore, 6.

“In all the horribleness of the disease, the support you get makes you think … how lucky we are to have such wonderful friends and family supporting us,” Mrs Zois said.

Theodore’s hugs and kisses have been lifting his dad’s spirits, but the family is hoping to raise another $2500 to help them go on a family holiday in Darwin, the only capital city Mr Williams has not visited. The money raised will also help pay for him to fly in a helicopter, do some thrilling laps in a V8 Supercar and land a commercial airliner in a simulator.

Memories key to happiness

For more than 60 years Australians have been celebrating the volunteers and council-run programs that deliver meals to elderly and housebound people everywhere, from far-flung farms to inner city high-rises.

Last week, Whittlesea council joined about 700 other Meals on Wheels service providers around the nation to thank almost 80,000 volunteers who are the mainstay of the service and a lifeline for people who are housebound.

One of the volunteers is Shirley Louie, who delivered her first food packages in the Whittlesea area six months ago. She now delivers meals fortnightly to frail and elderly people, to those with disabilities or others who have recently been discharged from hospital.

“What I cherish is the smile on their faces when I deliver their meals,” said Ms Louie.

But there is a shortage of volunteers.“We’re juggling and struggling,” said Meals

on Wheels Whittlesea spokeswoman Jenni Carruther.

Meals on Wheels Whittlesea delivers about 600 meals a week, a function that serves to check on people who are isolated.

“Most of our clients live isolated lives so that a volunteer calling might be the only person they see all day,” Ms Carruther said.

Meals on Wheels Whittlesea is always on the lookout for new volunteers who can contribute just a few hours a fortnight.

The service employs four staff and has 48 volunteers. To volunteer at Whittlesea, call Catherine Neil on 9463 0924.

Bret is a mate of mine who had his car written off by a bicycle. It was coming down a long hill and its rider didn’t know rim brakes don’t work in the wet. The bike rocketed through a stop sign and onto the intersection at full tilt and hit Bret’s little Renault at the front passenger’s door, flipping its rider over to land on his back on the car’s roof.

It cushioned his fall nicely and landed him upright and on his feet on the other side of the car. He wasn’t even scratched.

Meanwhile the Renault had a redesigned fender and door, and the roof was caved in. It was eight years old and the insurance company figured it wasn’t worth saving.

Of course, Bret emerged as the bad guy of the encounter for no other reason than that he was in a car.

Needless to say he has a view on cyclists. I’ve explained to him that cyclists always win the PR war because they wind up maimed and bleeding while pursuing their innocent, healthy lifestyles while selfish, crazed motorists who can’t be delayed a single second maliciously run them down and disappear over the horizon laughing fiendishly. Motorists are all the same.

Now I have to tell him there are bicycle computers that make and receive rider’s telephone calls and texts, meaning the cyclists’ moral high ground will extend even further onto the road space as riders do all that neat, diverting phone stuff while riding.

Magellan has announced a software update for its Cyclo 500 computers providing on-screen

Bicycle computers are keeping bike riders connected, writes Rod Easdown

What \ Magellan Cyclo 500 bike computers Price \ $379 to $479 Tech talk verdict \ Who wants phone calls while riding?

call and text message alerts from smartphones, and wireless control of the music stored on them.

“We are always looking for new ways to improve the cycling life of Australians and these cool one-of-kind features do just that,” said Paris Basson, a brand manager at Magellan.

The phone features work with Apples and Androids via Bluetooth 4.0. They alert the cyclist to incoming calls and display text messages on the screen mounted on the handlebars. There is caller-ID and calls can be routed through a Bluetooth headset.

Cyclists can also play, stop and pause music from their smartphones and receive turn-by-turn instructions from the phone’s navigation software.

It’s encouraging to note the Magellan software also includes an emergency feature that sends a text message to cyclists’ nominated contacts advising of their exact location, providing an address and latitude and longitude (always handy).

This means that, when cyclists encounter difficulties as a result of interacting with the phone rather than their fellow road users, someone can come by and rescue them. But this works only with Androids; Apple users must sort through about four billion apps to find something similar.

The new features are available as a free software update for existing owners of Cyclo 500 computers, while new Cyclos carrying the software are available from $379 to $479. (S

TAC CupNorth Ballarat Rebels led by 29 points after 15 minutes of the TAC Cup qualifying final against Calder Cannons at Visy Park on Saturday, largely thanks to four goals by Jesse Palmer. They kept the Rebels to three goals for the rest of the match and kicked 23 of their own to win 25.10 (160) to 9.7 (61). Full story and pictures at www.northern.starweekly.com.au.

South Morang was left to rue a poor first quarter in the Northern Football League’s division 3 preliminary final on Saturday, and with it went its grand final hopes.

Reservoir jumped out of the blocks to build a 44-point lead by quarter-time and the Lions never recovered, losing 18.11 (119) to 12.11 (83).

Harry Whybrow kicked three goals for the Lions.

Slow start costs LionsLions football manager Mark Muscat said a

disastrous first quarter cost his team the game.“We had a poor start and the damage was

done,” he said. “Credit to Reservoir, who made the most of the opportunities and were able to kick goals from easy positions.”

Muscat said the Lions got the margin back to four goals near the end of the third quarter but couldn’t close the gap further.

“We had a bit of a run on and thought we were a chance,” he said. “But then Reservoir’s senior and experienced players got the ball and steadied them.

“The best two teams for the season are in the grand final.”

Muscat said the club’s expectation was to make the finals after relegation last year.

“We won only one match last year, so even though we are in a lower division to have more wins and make finals is a good thing,” he said.

“To get within one win of a grand final is a positive.

“We now need some experienced players for next year to add to our current list.”
