A Community Cornerstone

For over a century North School has been acommunity cornerstone in the village o North

Springfeld. For generations the building came to

be more than a school—it served the community as

a center or civic and social events. Over the years

the school has been used or civil deense training,

amateur theatrical productions, Boy & Girl Scout

meetings and at times served as the local movie

theater. In the late 1980’s the school doors closed

or the fnal time and the building that had served thecommunity so well became shuttered and vacant.

The importance o the North School property is not

limited to the building itsel. The adjacent playground

and felds provided an outdoor recreation site or thecommunity. Concerned that the land could be lost to

development, in 2004 a group o citizens ormed the

North School Recreation Park Committee with the

blessing o the school board. This committee, with

the support o the community and much hard work,

began to rebuild the playground and develop the

area into a amily recreation park.

In addition to improving the land the committee

began to explore acquiring the school building and

opening it as a community center. With this new goal

Our Mission The mission o the North School Preservation Society

is two-old:

1. To preserve and restore the historic school

building so that once again it can be used as

a center or community activities and events.

2. To continue the development o the recreation

park as a green space or the enjoyment o

generations to come.

However, our mission cannot be achieved with out

community support and involvement. We need your

participation—both fnancially and as a volunteer, so

please show your support by becoming a member o the North School Preservation Society.
