Before Washing...
Prepare Wash Load
Empty Pockets and CuffsMake sure all pockets are emptyand turn them inside out. Onebobby pin, metal or plastic toy, nail or sharp object in a load cancatch laundry and cause tears.Facial tissue left in a pocket willproduce extreme "lint". A crayonor lipstick in a wash load maycause stains that cannot beremoved. Roll down cuffs andshake out grass, sand, andgravel.
Mend Rips and TearsLittle holes can become bigger inthe washer. Mend holes and tearsbefore placing garments in thewasher.
Close Zipper and Fasten HooksThese can catch on garments in awash load and tear them. Tiebelts and sashes so they won'twind around clothes.
Remove Nonwashable TrimCheck for colorfastness too, bysqueezing a portion of garment inwarm or hot sudsy water. If thecolor bleeds or runs, wash theitem separately in cold water.

Sort By Type and Amount ofSoilChildren's play clothes, as wellas work clothes, will need extratreatment. Lightly soiledclothes can become dingy ifwashed with heavily soileditems.
Sort Lint "Shedders" FromLint "Receivers"Some fabrics attract lint andshould not be washed with lint-shedding loads. Lint sheddersare cottons, terry towels, chenille bedspreads, rugs, andclothes which have beenheavily bleached.
Lint receivers are synthetics, permanent or durable press, knits (including socks),corduroy, and other smoothfabrics.

PretreatPretreat shirt collars and cuffswith a pre-wash product or liquiddetergent when placing them inthe washer. Before washing, treatspecial stains with bar soap, liquid detergent or a paste ofwater and granular detergent.Use a pretreat soil and stainremover.
Loading the Washer...
Load Articles
Load items by the amount ofspace they take up, not by theirweight. Mix large and small itemsin a load to get the best washingresults.
Drop items loosely into thewashtub. The bulk of the clothesrather than the weight willdetermine load size. Do not packitems in or wrap them around theagitator. Overloading can causepoor cleaning, excessivewrinkling, and tears.
WI491EOA
Items should move freely throughthe wash water for best cleaningresults. Items should reliever --sink and then reappear.
When washing very large items,do not fill washtub as full as withother loads.

ResetUse the RESET if agitation hasstarted and more water is neededfor the load.
Water Level
Right
Wrong
W150tEOA
The water level in your washershould fit the size of your washload. Small loads will use lowerwater levels. There must beenough water in the washtub toallow items to move and turn overfreely.
Overloading the washtub canresult in poor washing and rinsing.Overloading may also causewrinkling and tearing of items.
Water...
Water Hardness
Soft Water0 to 3.5 grainsper gallon
._,. Moderately Hard
Water3.6 to 7 grainsper gallon
_ Hard Water7.1 to 10.5 grainsper gallon
Very Hard WaterMore than 10.6grains per gallon
W1201EOA
Water hardness is measured ingrains per gallon (G.P.G.) or partsper million (P.P.M.). To learn yourwater hardness, call your WaterDepartment or State ExtensionService. Hard water will notremove soil as well as soft waterand can result in gray, dingylaundry. To get clothes clean inhard water, use a phosphatedetergent or use more detergent ifusing a non-phosphate detergent.Do not use soap.
Hard Water May Be SoftenedBy:1. A mechanical water softener
installed in your home.
2. The use of a packaged waterconditioner.
Soft Water
Water should be soft enough toallow soaps and detergents toremove soil effectively. Clotheswill be whiter and brighter whenwashed and rinsed in soft water.
Iron
If iron is present in the water, theclothes may become an all-overyellow or they may be stainedwith brown or orange spots orstreaks. Iron is not always visiblein the water.
Solutions to Iron ProblemsThe installation of a watersoftener wilt remove smallamounts of iron from the watersupply. The installation of an ironfilter may be necessary for moresevere cases. If the iron comesfrom the pipes, it may be sufficientjust to let the water run into theempty washer for about oneminute. This may help to clear thepipes. Spin this water out of thewashtub before starting the wash.
If iron comes from the waterheater, drain the heateroccasionally to remove the rust.
If the Iron Condition Cannot BeCorrectedPrepare the wash water first byadding detergent (not soap), thenadd the clothes to the washtub.Use a phosphate detergent. Thephosphate content of a detergentis listed on the package sidepanel.
Add a nonprecipitating waterconditioner to the washtub justbefore the rinse water enters. Donot use fabric softener in the rinsewater if a packaged waterconditioner is used.
Iron With Chlorine BleachThe use of chlorine bleach withwater that contains iron will makethe rust discoloration worse. Usean "all fabric" bleach.
Wash Temperature
Hot WaterHot water will give the best resultsof cleaning and sanitizing, but it isnot suitable for all items. It is bestfor sturdy whites and colorfastitems, heavily soiled items anddiapers.
Warm WaterBy using warm water, there is lesschance of color loss in items.Warm water also reduceswrinkling in permanent pressitems. Use with light andmoderate soils, non-colorfast ordark colors, permanent press, silks, woolens, nylon, and acrylic.
Cold WaterCold water is less effective incleaning than hot or warm water, but it does minimize wrinkling andcolor fading. Use it for washingextra-sensitive clothes and for therinsing of all fabrics.
EnergyYou can save energy whenwashing by following a fewguidelines:
1. Heating water accounts for thegreatest energy expense whenwashing. Save on heatingwater by using cold rinses.
2. Wash full loads, but do notoverload.
3. Use soak cycles for heavilysoiled items to reduce washtimes.
4. Select a shorter wash time forlightly soiled items.

Laundry Tips...
Use
oUse a soaking agent either during the soak cycle orovernight to remove stains and soils.
• Always follow manufacturer's instructions with anypretreatment product.
• You may use detergent or soap in your washer. Thedetermining factor is the hardness of the water. Alwaysuse detergent if the water is over three grains hard.
eUse to remove certain stains, disinfect, and keep clotheswhite.
• Use bleach in the wash water only. Do not use bleach inthe rinse.
• Follow directions on care label of garment.
• Bleach should not be used as a substitute for detergent.Use the recommended amount of bleach.
oUse to soften clothes and remove static electricity frompermanent press knits and other fabrics of man-madefibers.
• Add during the rinse cycle, using no other product in therinse. Follow bottle directions carefully.
• These products soften water by tying up the hardnessminerals. Recommended if using soap with water overthree grains hard, or when using nonphosphatedetergents.
• These products settle out hardness minerals byconverting them into particles that will not dissolve in thewater. If used with nonphosphate detergent or soap inhard water, a deposit may form on the clothes andwasher parts.
Comments
• Do not use a soakingagent with chlorinebleach.
J• Do not use pretreatersaround the washer ordryer control panel. Theymay harm the finish orpanel markings.
Soap and nonphosphatepowdered detergentswill not give goodwashing results in hardwater. Soap in hardwater will form stickydeposits.
The use of powderedsoap or detergent is notrecommended whenwashing in cold water.
When using liquidchlorine bleach, alwaysuse the bleachdispenser.
Always measure thebleach. Never exceedone cup of bleach perfull load.
• Never use chlorinebleach and ammonia inthe same washcycle.
• Undiluted fabricsoftener poured directlyon clothes can stainthem.
• Do not use withdetergent or bleach.
• Do not use withnonphosphatedetergents or soaps.

COLD • Rinsing of all items. • Saves energy.(approx. 65° F • Non-colorfast fabrics. • Reduces color fading.
or 18-00) • Extra sensitive clothing.
Bleach Dispenser
The bleach dispenser is located inthe left front corner, under theloading door.
Use liquid bleach in thedispenser.
Use no more than one cupchlorine bleach for large loads,three-quarters cup for mediumand one-half cup for small loads.
Be careful not to spill undilutedbleach. It is a strong chemical andcan damage some fabrics if it isnot properly diluted.
Powdered bleach must not beused in the bleach dispenser. Addpowdered bleach to the washwater.
Fabric SoftenerDispenser and Agitator
To Use DispenserAfter the clothes are loaded intothe washtub and before the startof the WASH CYCLE, pour theproper amount of liquid fabricsoftener into the bottle measuringcap (see bottle directions). Pourinto dispenser fill opening to tip ofarrow which indicates correct filllevel. Over-filling can allow fabricsoftener to spill onto the clothes.
Setting the water level to mediumor higher will result in betterperformance from the fabricsoftener.
The fabric softener will remain inthe dispenser during the wash fill, agitation and spin. At the end ofthe wash spin, the liquid fabricsoftener will be dispensed into thewashtub through the slots in theagitator and will be mixed with theincoming rinse water.
To Clean The DispenserRemove the dispenser housingfrom agitator by pulling directlyupward and at the same timetilting slightly. This will expose thedispenser cup, which is alsoremovable for cleaning (refer toillustration). Both housing and cupcan be soaked in hot soapy waterand rinsed clean. The funnelshape in top of agitator alsoneeds to be cleaned. The holeand the slots in the two rings willrequire using a small brush forproper cleaning.
After cleaning, install dispensercup, then push dispenser housingdirectly downward onto top ofagitator until firmly snappedtogether.
Use Tips• Fabric softener spilled onto
garments may cause staining. To remove, soak in a soapysolution made from Ivory orCamay soap, or rub the stainwith a bar of either of thesesoaps. Then wash.
Liquid fabric softeners will bedisplayed during the final rinseand should not be combinedwith bleach, bluing, starch, detergents, soaps or packagedwater conditioners during therinse.
Fabric softener is not to beused in dispenser when usingthe Soak cycle.
When adding detergent towash water, do not allow any toenter into softener dispensercup, as softener will becomegummy.
To prevent softener buildup, thedispenser can be filled with cleanwater for automatic cleaning. Thiscan be done in washing cyclesother than when softener is used.

How To Use Your Washer...
Operation Instructions
- A WARNING
To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, seriousinjury or death, read theIMPORTANT SAFETYINSTRUCTIONS, Pages 2and 3, before operating thewasher.
Determine ProperCycle
RegularUse for sturdy items, like play orwork clothes, towels, T-shirts, etc.The wash time selection willdepend on the type of fabric andthe amount of soil. For the bestresults when cleaning heavilysoiled items, use a longer washtime (15 minutes maximum).Lightly soiled items require lesswash time.
Permanent Press/KnitsUse for permanent press itemsand synthetics. The wash timeselection will depend upon thetype of fabric and amount of soil. The PERMANENT PRESS/KNITScycle automatically cools thetemperature of the fibers beforethe spin. After wash the agitationstops, the washtub spins slowly, partially drains and then stops.Cold water will then beautomatically added to thewashtub until the proper waterlevel is reached. This happensone or two times, depending onthe size of the load and type ofdrain connection. When theCOOL DOWN is complete, thewasher will pause forapproximately one minute beforecontinuing the cycle.
Soak/Prewash 1.Use for heavily soiled or stainedclothing. Turn timer knob to thebeginning of the SOAK!PREWASH cycle. Pull timer knobout to start the water fill. Adddetergent to the washtub, then 2.place the load into the tub. Closelid. After fill is completed, agitationwill begin. This cycle has alternateperiods of agitation and soaking. 3.After the soak/agitation period isover the washer will go into a spincycle and then shut off. Do notleave clothes sit in washer 4.overnight. After spin, selectappropriate cycle and pull timerknob out to start water fill. Oncethe water mixes with the clothes, add detergent.
DelicateWash delicate items usuallywashed by hand on this cycle. Afull tub of warm water isrecommended (even for smallloads) to allow the delicate itemsto move freely through the water.More water helps reduce fabricwear, wrinkling, and provides for aclean wash.
The wash portion of this cyclealternates between short periodsof agitation and longer periods ofsoaking. Cycle includes a coldwater rinse.
To Wash Clothes
IMPORTANT: Before using yournew washer, make sure thewasher cord is plugged into a!20 Volt electrical outlet that hasthe proper grounding and polarity.Make sure the washer hoses areconnected to the hot and coldwater faucets, and that thefaucets are turned on. Be sure thedrain hose is not kinked and isinserted into a drain. See theINSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONSfor details of proper washerinstallation.
Get the clothes ready forwashing. Empty pockets andcuffs. Sort items into separateloads. Pretreat stains andheavily soiled areas.
Measure and add detergent tothe washtub, after the waterlevel has exceeded two inches.
Add clothes loosely into thewashtub. The bulk of theclothes rather than the weightwill determine load size.
Close the loading door. Thewasher will not agitate or spinwith the loading door open.
A WARNING
To reduce the risk ofserious injury, do not by-pass the loading doorswitch by permitting thewasher to agitate or spinwith the loading door open.Do not use washer if it doesnot stop when loading dooris open or starts withoutpulling the timer knob out.

Special Care . . .
Starching
Starching adds crispness andbody to fabrics, enhances soilresistance, and makes ironingeasier. There are several types ofstarches. Carefully follow labeldirections for spray or handstarching or starching in thewasher.
Knits
A variety of knits are being usedfor many types of clothing andhousehold furnishings. Many knitsare machine washable, some arehand washable, and some mustbe dry-cleaned. When buying, make sure the garment has acare label with care instructions. These directions must befollowed. Some knits arestretched during theirmanufacture and may shrink orrelax when exposed to water.
Cotton KnitsUnless the label indicates that it ispreshrunk, cotton knits willprobably shrink to some degree.Overdrying contributes toshrinkage of cotton knits.
Rayon KnitsRayon stretches and shrinkseasily. Treat as a delicate fabricand wash gently.
Synthetic Fiber KnitsKnits made from synthetic fibersor blends containing a highpercentage of synthetics willgenerally keep their shape. Whenbuying, make sure the trimmings(including belts) are machinewashable, seams are netpuckered, and zippers andtrimmings are well fastened.
Cotton KnitsWash water should be hot orwarm suitable for color and soil. The rinse water should be cold.Avoid overdrying as cotton knitsmay shrink.
Knits of Man-Made FibersIn general, follow the rules forpermanent press fabrics asthey tend to have the samecharacteristics. Set machine toPERMANENT PRESS/KNITScycle. Set the wash water warm,or suitable for color and soil.Rinse water should be cold andagitation gentle. Do not wash withlint-shedding fabrics. Separateitems for color, washing whitesseparately.
Sweaters of Man-Made FibersFellow directions for knits. Buttonsweaters and turn inside out, Theribbon behind the buttons andbutton holes may shrink. Stretchto shape after washing. Orlonsweaters may stretch. Avoidpulling them when wet. Dryer dry.
Wool SweatersLoosely knit or delicatelyconstructed sweaters will needdelicate care. Hand wash.Measure garment before and afterwashing. Squeeze gently throughthe water with little motion. Rinsethoroughly. Block to shape anddry flat.
For sweaters labeled "machinewashable", follow manufacturer'sdirections or use warm waterwash, cold rinse, gentle agitation, short wash time, and fast spin.Dry flat. Excess agitation andexcess tumbling are the maincauses of wool shrinkage.
Wool KnitsDry-clean wool knits unlesslabeled machine washable.Follow manufacturer's directions.

Permanent Press
Permanent or durable pressgarments and household itemswill usually not need pressingwhen washed and dried properly. However, some will be morewrinkle resistant than others.
The care needed for permanentpress is a little different than forcottons. Permanent press willsoften or become pliable whenheated. This softening when it isin warm or hot wash water willallow wear wrinkles to beremoved. It will also cause thefabric to wrinkle if it is crushed, squeezed or spun when hot.
Permanent press cycles ofwashers, when washer controlsare properly set, will cool theclothes before the wash spin toavoid wrinkling. Because theclothes soften when heated, it isimportant to remove them fromthe dryer as soon as tumblingstops.
How To Wash Permanent Press1. Wash often. Permanent press
clothes tend to look clean evenwhen they should be washed.
2. Sort loads correctly, refer toPage 4.
3. Do not wash with lint-sheddingloads. Permanent pressattracts lint in th.e wash water.
4. Pre-treat grease stains and oilyareas. This is especiallyimportant for shirt collars andcuffs. Rub liquid detergent or apaste of detergent into thearea.
5. Use the PERMANENT PRESS/KNITS cycle, hot or warmwater, cold rinse, agitation andspin speed suitable for fabricand sufficient detergent.
6. Use fabric softener in the rinsewater. This will reduce thestatic electricity which attractslint and makes garments cling.
To Dry Permanent PressFor best results, permanent pressmust be dryer dried. See garmentcare labels. If to be line dried, useslow spin (if your washer has it).Ironing may be necessary. Uselow heat setting on iron or steamsetting on a steam iron.

Vashing Problems...
To keep clothes looking white or bright, use good washing practices at all times to prevent a gradual build-upof soil or water hardness minerals on them. If you notice that your clothes are not as bright as they should be,take corrective measures immediately.
Problem Cause
Gray or Dingy Insufficient DetergentClothes
Improper Sorting
Nonphosphate Detergent and Hard Water
Water Not Hot Enough
Overcrowding Washer
Yellowed Clothes Unremoved Soil
Solution
Add more detergent to washtub beforeloading clothes. Mild detergents are notsuitable for average soil.
Wash whites separately. Separate lightfrom heavily soiled items. Clothes canpick up soil from dirty wash water.
Follow package directions. Soften waterif possible.

Water Level
Right
Wrong

White clothes will stay whiter with hotwash water. Increase temperature.
Clothes must circulate freely through thewater for best results.
Skin soil is hard to remove. Check hemedge of sheets and pillowcases, bottomend of t-shirts, etc. If this portion iswhite and center is yellow, the fabriccontains unremoved soil. Use sufficientdetergent and a hot wash. Chlorinebleach may be needed.
Clothes Stained From Iron In The water ......To test if an iron stai'n, use a rust removeron a portion of the garment. Followbottle directions for larger items.

Stain Reoval...
Many soils will not become stains if treated promptly. Older stains may be difficult or impossible to remove. Hotwater will set some stains, particularly protein based stains. Use cold or warm water on these before washing inhot water.
- & WARNING
Never put highly flammable substances like gasoline, kerosene, waxes, cooking oils, etc. into awasher or dryer. Never put articles that have been cleaned with such substances into a washer ordryer. Failure to comply with these warnings could result in a fire, explosion, and/or serious burnsor death. All items with these substances on them should be thoroughly hand-washed with adetergent so that no trace of the flammable substances remains. The articles can then be machinewashed and/or dried.
When using any kind of a dry-cleaning fluid, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Thefumes should never be inhaled. Use in a well ventilated room away from sparks and flames. Air drybefore washing or drying. Dry-cleaning fluid may cause a "ring" to be formed on some permanentpress fabrics. This will not wash out. To remove, clean the garment in a coin-operated dry-cleaningunit, or by a professional dry-cleaner.
