FROM the Chairman This month I had the pleasure of attending the Exceptional People Awards. It was a fantastic event that celebrated the stellar achievements of staff across our District who embody our CORE values. Roseville Golf Club provided a wonderful setting for such a memorable day.

The event is a highlight of our annual calendar and one to which I look forward. I know our staff and my fellow board members really look forward to it, too. It is particularly pleasing to see family members attend to support our staff who are nominated for awards.

This year I had the privilege of presenting the Connected Person Centred-Care Awards to the winners, but I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the other winners and nominees.

Our staff provide exceptional patient care and to see them recognised at events like the Exceptional People Awards is wonderful. It is always important to pause to celebrate success.

September also provided the opportunity for me to indulge my passion for science when I was invited to present a lunchtime lecture as part of the Kolling Institute Seminar Series.

My chosen topic, ‘Why Science and Scientists Matter’, gave me chance to share what had learnt over many years in the study of the history and philosophy of science.

My talk focussed on the persistent and many challenges that science is facing in the modern era, especially in Australia. These include limited funding and challenges to the authority of science.

This is despite the fact that so much of our day-to-day lives, and the quality of our lives, depend on science and scientific advances.

I spoke about how it is more important than ever for scientists to communicate with each other, the media and the general public. I reminded the audience of the power of the scientific method and the weight of scientific evidence, rather than seeking absolute proofs.

The Kolling and our researchers are at the forefront of scientific research and we should be proud of them and their achievements and should never hesitate to defend them and their worth.

Gearing up for the moveA broad community awareness campaign is underway with the move to Northern Beaches Hospital now a month away.

A large banner has been installed out the front of Manly Hospital confirming the transfer

of staff and all services on Tuesday 30 October.

All emergency services on the Northern Beaches will be provided at Northern Beaches Hospital from 7am on that day.

Manly Hospital will officially close on 30 October when all inpatients have been transferred to the new hospital.

Record keepingThe oldest records in our District are safely tucked up in the archives at Royal North Shore, but today’s records are just as important.

Many of us have legal obligations under NSW law, and the NSW State Archives and Records Authority is the ultimate record keeper.

From time to time, State Records – as it’s informally known – runs courses which help our record keepers keep up-to-date with their legal obligations.

Now State Records is asking us to help with a survey they are running across the NSW public sector to try to ascertain how much we know

about the important of record-keeping.

You don’t need to be an official record-keeper to participate and State Records would appreciate everyone’s feedback.

So, if you can spare a few minutes, please follow this link: https://surveys.amr-australia.com.au/mrIWeb/mrIWeb.dll?I.Project=STARAC0016A

Then treat yourself to a peek at the State Records site at www.records.nsw.gov.au for a fascinating look at our past, including profiles of some colonial criminals.

MOSAIQ is now live at Northern Sydney Cancer CentreAfter months of preparation, phase one of MOSAIQ is now live at Northern Sydney Cancer Centre (NSCC).

MOSAIQ is an oncology/haematology information system which assists in the provision of efficient care management for patients undergoing systemic therapy.

As part of phase one staff have been:

• Electronically prescribing and documenting administration for two systemic therapy protocols

• Recording haematology and medical oncology vital signs, nursing assessments and patient progress notes in MOSAIQ

• Scanning patient paper documents into the new system

• Exporting into eMR patient treatment summaries on a daily basis, for all MOSAIQ patients

The benefits are:

• Updating the paper documentation practices into a purpose built electronic oncology information system

• Improved patient flow through the NSCC and communicating their care to NSLHD facilities.

Falling for safety Invisible beams which sound an alarm when they detect movement are the latest addition to wards to prevent patient falls.

Nursing teams at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital have been given the machines, known as Invisabeams, as the hospital aims to further reduce its rate of falls.

The Invisabeam works by sounding an alarm if the patient breaks the beam, prompting a nurse to check the patient and to assist with any mobility requirements.

Following a successful trial at the hospital, nine machines were purchased with the help of Professor Sue Kurrle, Clinical Director, Rehabilitation and Aged Care, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital and a grant from the Clinical Excellence Commission.

Nurse Unit Manager Cindy Ko has been trialling the Invisabeam in her ward and said: ``it’s really great to have this in addition to our floor beds and falls mats as it gives nurses more options and allows for falls prevention strategies to be customised to suit individual patients.

``The other day we used it on a patient at risk … the Invisabeam is very useful for increasing surveillance of these patients.’’

The Invisabeams were distributed after the company rep gave an education session on how to use them. This was followed up by the key note speaker, Prof Sue Kurrle, who spoke on the topic of frailty and sarcopenia – the loss of muscle mass and strength - and how the combination of the two can contribute to falls.

General Manager, Lee Gregory, praised hospital staff for their efforts in reducing the number of falls.

``There has been a tremendous amount of work in falls and we need to keep going,’’ Lee said.

``The level of commitment by the hospital to reduce falls should be commended.’’

New Northern Beaches Hospital uniforms unveiledThe brand new Northern Beaches Hospital uniforms are being progressively given to staff as part of the orientation program currently underway.

Staff are wearing their new uniforms

for the first time, with more than 2000 items being distributed during the current training sessions. For some staff, there are several pieces of new uniform.

The uniforms were designed after consultation with staff, including doctors and nurses who tested the scrubs.

The uniforms will not only be worn by staff at Northern Beaches

Hospital, but rolled out to other Healthscope hospitals.

We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce some of the new Northern Beaches Hospital team and to thank them for modelling the new outfits.

More than 1,300 people will work at the new hospital, representing a wide area of expertise.

Training in full swing at new hospitalMore than 400 staff have begun their training and orientation program ahead of the opening of Northern Beaches Hospital on Tuesday 30 October.

Director of Workforce and Culture Paula Williscroft said the training has included all disciplines from engineering to pharmacy, cleaning services to administration.

“Most staff will have at least one day of orientation, while others will have up to nine days of training depending on their roles and seniority," Paula said.

“JMOs have started their training this week, which has been pleasing to see.

“The orientation program is focusing on systems, procedures and equipment, while staff will also have the opportunity to explore the hospital and become familiar with their department.

“Managers will soon begin discussions with staff about rostering, in readiness for the Kronos training,” Paula said.

Around 800 people will undergo training and orientation before the hospital opens.

Mona Vale team takes out hotly contested awardMona Vale’s Medical Assessment Unit has won a trophy for its performance over the last year, recognising the team’s outstanding contribution to the community.

NSW Health assessed the operation of medical assessment units across the state, and found the Mona Vale unit was the only one in NSW to meet all the

benchmarks.

This included discharging 80 per cent of patients home within 48 hours and supporting the Emergency Department so that patients were in emergency for less than four hours.

Nurse unit manager Majella McFarlane said it was really satisfying to pick up the award, as it demonstrates the MAU

has a great model of care and provides wonderful care for its patients.

“The result reflects our team work and the good relationships we have with other departments," Majella said.

“It also shows the integrity of our team and that we’re focused and passionate about what we do.”
