Pastor Charles [email protected]
November is Thanksgiving month. During this month we usually focus on family and giving thanks for all of God's
blessings. This month I want to express my thanks for our church staff. In case you don't know who that is, our ministry staff is
comprised of our worship leaders, Jim Barnett who is the Minister of Music for the traditional service and David Cook who sneaks in a little of family ministry along with his current primary role of Interim Minister of Music for the contemporary service. Tony Keene is our Youth Minister. Kay Shelby is our Administrative Assistant. She keeps the work of the office flowing smoothly and gives great support to our staff. Rounding off our staff is Bud Dilly who is more than our custodian. He keeps chairs and tables matched up in the right places, TVs in the right rooms and much more unseen support behind the scenes. With the exception of myself, Kay and Bud, all of the other staff have full time jobs apart from their work for the church. They all give hours of service way above their suggested staff hours. In addition they have been the best staff I have ever had the privilege to work with. After more than 35 years of ministry, I have never had such a staff that I can count on so completely. There is such passion for service, such great leadership that they are a constant encouragement for my role as pastor. October was Pastor Appreciation Month, and Jane and I were so grateful for your many expressions of support. During the month of November, be sure to express your appreciation to our church staff.

Jessica Austic, Women’s Ministry Committee Chair
Hello HSBC Family and Friends! Greetings from the newest members of The Women’s Ministry Committee: Jessica Austic (chair), Sasha Cook, Jessica Martin, and Sue Peacock! I know I speak not only for myself but also for the rest of the ladies when I say we are very excited and a tiny bit overwhelmed by this new venture in serving our church as we are all “first-timers” except for Jessica Martin. We would respectfully request prayers as we as a committee endeavor to provide services to our church body and to the community beyond in the way that is most pleasing to our Lord. Our immediate itinerary is to author a mission statement that encompasses the direction we intend to take with this ministry. This committee will continue on with some traditions already established for the women of our church (the beloved ‘Women’s
Tea’), but will also be doing a bit of tailoring of some of these previous events (instead of a ‘Cookie Swap’ at Christmas time, possibly a ‘Favorite Things’ gathering), as well as adding some new ideas (attending the Women of Joy retreat in April 2016 in Branson, Missouri)! Stay tuned for more details in the December HSBC newsletter! It is truly an honor to serve in this capacity and the newest members of this committee thank you. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.” Our prayer Lord, is that our individual gifts, kinds of service, and our works complement each other and form a cohesive body with which to serve You by loving and serving others. In His Service,
Special Business Meetings will be held after each morning service on Budget Adoption Sunday,
November 8.

can take many different forms,
but often it occurs in response to

compiling devotions to help
people prepare for Christmas.
The theme of this year’s
devotions is taking verses that
you are familiar and applying
them to the Christmas holiday.
Once again, various people from
HSBC will be writing the
devotions. I thank those who are
writing a devotion; once again it
will be a mixture from both
services. While the devotions
won’t start until November 29th, I
will try and have them available in
the foyer the week before, in case

weekend. Christmas is the time
of year that we make so many
preparations with the decorations

The apostle John, described as the disciple whom Jesus loved, wrote a beautiful Gospel account of our Savior, 3 Epistles to help us live a productive Christian life, and the Revelation of the victorious eternity to come. John’s words should fill us with great anticipation for Christ’s return. John wasn’t writing a sci-fi fantasy story that came from his imagination. John, as the other Scripture writers before him, was giving us the Words of God…words that should fill us with anticipation and move us to action. Star Wars returns to theaters on December 18, the week before Christmas. Theaters are already sold out. I’m sure the most rabid fans are planning their camp outs in front of the theaters as I type this. What are we doing to prepare the world for the day Christ returns? As John writes in Revelation 22:20, “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”
Anticipation...Webster's defines it as "a feeling of excitement about something that is going to happen" or “the act of preparing for something”. Apparently for millions of people around the world (and this Youth Minister), the premier of the latest Star Wars trailer evoked the very definition of the word anticipation. My generation grew up in the shadow of the original trilogy. I was 5 yrs old when the first Star Wars came out in 1977. I saw the first 2 films when they ran on cable in the early ‘80s and saw the 3rd one on the big screen in 1983. Star Wars was a big part of my childhood so you can imagine my anticipation when the Prequels came out in 1999. Andrew was 3 ½ and I couldn’t wait to share a part of my childhood with him. Although he wasn’t even 4 yet, he sat through the movie enthralled. Granted, the Prequels left many of us disappointed, but what a thrill
to introduce my kids to something I had cherished as a kid. Fast forward to 2015 and we are again looking forward to a new installment of the Star Wars universe. As I think about the Star Wars phenomenon, I have to wonder…what would our world be like if Christians had the same fervor and anticipation about the coming of Christ as Star Wars fans have about the new movie. If you search YouTube, you will find hundreds of entries where people have recorded their “reactions” to watching the trailer and thousands have watched these videos and commented on them. Hundreds of other sites have broken down the trailer frame by frame and have attempted to explain every nuance in the 2:00 minute clip. How many Christians go to that much effort to read Scriptures or tell someone their testimony? How many “hits” do we get each week on our LiveStream broadcast of our services? Do we share our faith with our kids with as much excitement as we share our enthusiasm for other things in our lives; like Star Wars or sports or music or other interests?

The pies were appreciated. Fall Festival – Almost all workers are lined up. The one need is for cupcakes. There is a sign-up sheet in the foyer. It was also mentioned that Kirksville Parks and Rec are having their festival on Saturday, October 24, and we will participate by leading games. The Multipurpose Room will be decorated Sunday afternoon, October 25, yet to be determined if there will be evening servcies. Serving Opportunities Booklet – The Nominating Committee re-presented the booklet containing areas of service for comment and corrections. This will be discussed more thoroughly next month. Missouri Arts Council Facility Request – The request was reviewed. It was felt that our facility was not the best location for this group. Review of September Business Meeting – Pastor Charles said he and others noticed the mood at the last business meeting was different. Therefore, at the Deacons meeting which followed, they discussed possible reasons why this might be so. Those comments were shared with the Church Council asking if

Church Council met recently and discussed the following items: Membership Process, Policy, and Brochure – A brochure developed by various staff members emphasizing three components: Rooted, Growing, Sharing was shared. Additionally, a paper of the same name was reviewed. Several new ideas are presented in these documents which describe church membership, membership requirements, expectations, and the process for becoming a member. Overview of BSU Progressive Dinner – 10 students attended this year. Prayer was requested for the BSU ministry. Overview of Coffee Spot – Overall impressions are that it is achieving its goal of integrating services and greeting guests. It was agreed there are some kinks still to be worked out: It was agreed that we need to work on the following emphases: Have people in the sanctuary to greet guests who choose not to participate in the fellowship. Food portion. Encourage one sweet and one healthy snack in a
the topics stated reflect the church’s view. Concepts from the Deacon discussion were rewritten taking a more positive position. This discussion will continue next month. Ballot Vote Procedure – A request has been made by Church Moderator, Terry Mack, to place the ballots in the pew racks in advance, then hand the marked ballots to the center aisle to be picked up by the ushers. It was decided there is no need for change at this time. Children’s Church Coordinator – The Nominating Committee has been asked to consider making this a Co-Coordinator position by two volunteers willing to share the position. It was agreed that one person should take the responsibility and one assist. Continue Advent Candle Lighting during services – After discussion, it was decided to discontinue that for this Christmas. Ben Austic volunteered to reimagine this event, coordinating with David, for the 11 am service. We will change the Advent Devotions to Preparing for Christmas. End of Year Food Bank Dates – It is believed we will not have enough volunteers in town for the December date. We will call and talk to the Food Bank to see if we will keep the schedule at the 4th Saturday of the month, or if the dates need to be changed due to Thanksgiving and Christmas.
What goes into the box is fun… what comes out is eternal. Your simple gifts – packed with love in Jesus’ name – deliver hope and joy to hurting children across the globe. Let’s “Wow” those hurting children by showing them the love of Jesus through a shoebox gift.
Start with an average-size shoebox, include a “Wow” toy that the child will love, and add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift! Also include a $7 donation for shipping costs, and drop off your shoebox gift in the foyer by Sunday, November 15.
With just one shoebox gift, you can GIVE gifts to, PRAY for, and SEND the good news of Jesus
Christ to a needy child! Every shoebox is a missionary! How many shoeboxes will you pack? How many children and their families will experience Christ’s love because of your shoebox gifts?
Brochures describing how to pack your shoeboxes are available in the foyer. Gift suggestions are listed in the brochure, as well as a list of items to not include. Please notice that the instructions in the brochure ask you to donate $7 or more per shoebox to help cover shipping costs, if possible. If you would like to participate in this project, please place your packed shoeboxes in the foyer by Sunday, November 15.
If you would like to make a money donation, you can make your check payable to HSBC and designate it for “Operation Christmas Child”. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Tanya Tatro.

A quick note from the Missions Committee. Looking forward to the holiday season please don't forget Lottie Moon. This year we will again have our Lottie Moon Post Office up and running. Bring your Christmas cards for fellow church families and save stamps. This allows you to donate your saved stamp money to Lottie Moon. Also if you're interested in doing small weekend mission trips to help other churches with small carpentry work please let me or Charles Porter 660.216.2796 know. We will be going to Bonner Springs, Kansas Nov. 20-22. Also looking ahead be praying for our Watoto Children's Choir that will be coming April 13 to our church. We will be needing host homes for these children that are orphans from Uganda. We’re also looking to have a Guest Speaker soon... blot them (their manifold sins) out of remembrance. Then again, on January 1, 1795, our first United States President, George Washington, wrote his famed National Thanksgiving Proclamation, in which he says that it is… "…our duty as a people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude, to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God, and to implore Him to continue is… our duty as a people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude, to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God, and to implore Him to continue and confirm the blessings we experienced…"
Thursday, the 19th day of February, 1795 was thus set aside by George Washington as a National Day of Thanksgiving. Many years later, on October 3, 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, by Act of Congress, an annual National Day of Thanksgiving "on the last Thursday of November, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens." In this Thanksgiving proclamation, our 16th President says that it is…
"…announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord… But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand
which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, by the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own….It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people…"
So it is that on Thanksgiving Day each year, Americans give thanks to Almighty God for all His blessings and mercies toward us throughout the year. What are you thankful for this year? The Bible says in I Chronicles 16:8,”Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what He has done.” During this Thanksgiving season let’s give some serious thought to what we are thankful for and then go to God in prayer and thanksgiving. See you in worship!
Jim Barnett, 8:30 am Music Minister, [email protected]
Many Americans think of Thanksgiving as a wonderful time to celebrate getting out of school for a long weekend, and eating a huge dinner. Or, maybe they think it is the start of the Christmas holiday season. What is the real meaning behind Thanksgiving? We can trace this historic American Christian tradition to the year 1623. After the harvest crops were gathered in November 1623, Governor William Bradford of the 1620 Pilgrim Colony, “Plymouth Plantation” in Plymouth, Massachusetts proclaimed:
"All ye Pilgrims with your wives and little ones, do gather at the Meeting House, on the hill… there to listen to the pastor, and render Thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings."
This is the origin of our annual Thanksgiving Day celebration. November 1, 1777, by order of Congress, the first National Thanksgiving Proclamation was proclaimed, and signed by Henry Laurens, President of Continental Congress. The third Thursday of December, 1777 was thus officially set aside:
"…for solemn thanksgiving and praise. That with one heart and one voice the good people may express the grateful feelings of their hearts, and consecrate themselves to the service of their Divine Benefactor;… and their humble and earnest supplication that it may please God, through the merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to forgive and
