    Nordic Sustainable Campus Network NSCNLet`s build a network for sustainability professionals of ESD

    and campus greening in the Nordic universities!

    NSCN supports your University in reaching its sustainability goals. By this letter we survey yourinstitution`s wish to participate. The network is open for all Nordic University staff members andit connects the existing national networks of sustainability professionals.

    The network was established in 2012 and the core idea is described in the enclosed appendix.

    Aalto University is responsible for coordinating the network which is supported by Nordic Councilof Ministers until 2013, but the plan is to continue interaction also beyond this.

    What does it offer?

    strengthens and supports your sustainability performance peer-to-peer information sharing among staff and all related units academic interaction for ESD and campus greening professionals follow-up in current issues in global, Nordic and national level (blog/newsletter) channel for reaching sustainability colleagues and nding new partnerships

    How to join?

    Please send your expression of interest preferably by 31st of October 2012 to [email protected] the following information: name of your university contact person (profession, unit, email address, phone number) recipients for email communication (can be several) web site, logo

    At the moment there is no membership fee.

    Nordic Sustainable Campus Network (NSCN)

    Background

    Nordic Universities in general are committed to apply the principles of sustainability into their coreactivities and operations. To support these activities and sharing of experiences, an idea of creatinga Nordic network of university sustainability experts was developed during 2011.

    Establishing the network

    Representing all Nordic countries, signatory members of this declaration are committed to creatinga Nordic Sustainable Campus Network. This decision was taken in January 2012 by signatory members.The establishment procedure will develop during 2012 and will include the following activities:

    dening the activities and tangible outcomes of NSCN dening the role of the steering group cooperating with NUAS and possibly with other relevant and similar Nordic actors creating an informal Nordic chapter within ISCN network discovering future resources assuring the continuation of the network by keeping it open, dynamic and exible

    Objectives

    improving overall sustainability of Nordic universities committing top management and involving all university stakeholders supporting sustainability activities within Nordic universities by creating a platform for sharing

    information, generating and coordinating joint activities strengthening Nordic visibility in global networks the activities of the network aims at strengthening sustainability in research and teaching

    supporting universitiesgreen campus activities (integrating sustainability in all operations) implementing education for sustainable development (ESD) in general

    sharing experiences and best practices identifying emerging issues within all the dimensions of sustainability developing exchange for staff and students between network members

    cooperating with other Nordic networks

    Activities during 2012

    In general, NSCN activities will be performed as sustainably as possible.

    launch of the NSCN network (EUA conference in Warwick March12, Rio+20 WSSD-U-2012in Rio de Janeiro, ISCN symposium in Eugene, Oregon June12)

    organizing thematic events (e.g. Global week at GU, November 2012)

    inviting new members (via NUAS and other collaborative networks) dening other joint activities planning the activities for 2013 and beyond

    NSCN Steering group

    The role of the steering group is to share responsibilities within the network members, keep othermembers and wider audience informed of the networks current issues, monitor the activities ofthe network and to plan future possibilities of the network. Steering group consists of the followingmembers:

    Resources

    During 2012 the Nordic Council of Ministers will nance bo Akademi (ESD)and Aalto University (green campus) being responsible for initiating the Nordicnetwork. The project goes under the name Utveckling av de nordiska hg-skolentverken fr hllbar utveckling och grna campus, Development ofthe Nordic Higher Education Networks for Sustainable Development and Green Campus.

    To ensure maximal outreach, NSCN will co-operate with other Nordic initiatives like ESDAN, Educationfor Sustainable Development in Academia in the Nordic countries, which is nanced by NCM.
