Dear friends,What is it about the word senior or senior center? The age for membership to the Center is 50 and over.Isn’t it our goal to actually get older? Yet, when someone suggests the senior center, we often think thatit is not for us. For me, the word senior does not bother me as much as the words “senior citizen”. Theword older, does not bother me as much as the word old. If we are living well, we may not mind beingolder but we may never feel old. If we are honest with ourselves, we know we have achieved the statusof a senior or at least nearing “that stage”. But, we may never consider ourselves a senior citizen.

My point to this rather vague discussion is that this “Center” is for the 50+ population. We really don’tknow of a better name than the Newark Senior Center – at this time. (Keep in mind that we are the firstand only accredited senior center in the state and very proud of that fact.) But, what I do know is thatthis is such an amazing community treasure with something for everyone. Our younger members, meincluded, will find inspiration from our “older” members. Those who have chosen to live well and remainactive, engaged members of the community.

For those who don’t consider themselves old enough to attend programs here at the Center, perhaps youmight consider serving as a volunteer. We have many opportunities. As a fellow 50 something… I challenge you to keep up with some of our “older” members. One of the wonderful things about thisplace is that each person can do what they are able. Someday, I hope to have as much stamina and energy as many of our members and instructors. Someday, I hope to have a little more time to surroundmyself with positive people, choosing classes that I love and being with people that are really enjoying thegolden years.

ATTenTIon MeMberS: Are you a senior with aspare room in your home? Could you use extraincome? Consider renting out a room to anothersenior! The decline of affordable housing optionsfor seniors leaves many of them looking for roomsto rent. Renting out a spare room provides you withincome and your tenant with affordable housing. Itcan make good financial sense. You may advertise Rooms for Rent on our bulletinboard located near the kitchen. Or advertise if youneed a room to rent. Leave your advertisement atthe Reception Desk for it to be posted. The NSC is making this available as a resource tomembers. The NSC bears no responsibility for anyrental arrangement.

Tips for Staying IndependentSenior drivers are at a higher risk of having a seriouscollision more than any other age group except forthose under age 25. Drivers age 85 and older areinjured or killed in crashes at a higher rate than anyother age group—due primarily to increased fragilitythat comes with age.Tips for Safer Senior Driving• Increase your following distance. You should allowa greater distance between you and the vehicleahead of you, so you’ll have more time to react.• Minimize left turns. Senior drivers age 65 andolder are involved in more crashes making left-handturns. If possible, make three right turns to avoidmaking a left. Or try to use intersections with designated left-hand turn lanes. • Eliminate distractions inside the vehicle. Adjustingradio volume, using a cell phone and interactingwith passengers can be major distractions. Planyour route before you get behind the wheel.• Try to steer clear of busy highways and congestedtraffic. Don’t hesitate to use local roads instead ofhighways. Also try to avoid rush hour traffic or highly congested areas. More vehicles on the roadcan mean a greater likelihood of a collision. • Senior drivers should also consider using publictransportation if it’s available to you.• Review your medications with your doctor orpharmacist. Senior drivers should remember thatprescription and over-the-counter medications canslow reflexes, blur vision and cause drowsiness ordizziness, causing additional driver distractions. Ifyou have serious muscle or joint impairments, askyour doctor about anti-inflammatory drugs that canhelp permit safe driving.• Stay awake and alert. Drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving and distracted driving.Be sure to get enough sleep before taking a ride andtake frequent breaks along the way if needed.• Take a Defensive Driving Refresher course on regular basics. It can help you keep your skills fresh. • For more information on senior driving go tohttp://seniordriving.aaa.comThese tips and many more could help you maintainyour mobile independence, quality of life and safety.free MeDICAL IDS by Jim belton, new york LiferepresentativeMarch 3rd, April 8th, & May 5th9:00am - noon

FITNESS CENTER CORNERDaylight Savings Time comes to us this month, somore time in the day must mean more time tofocus on you! Here are some ways to be moretime efficient throughout the day in hopes ofgetting more things checked off your list:• Create a short list of things you want to accomplish daily, and then prioritize it.• Pick a task and set a timer. If you do not getthe task done in time, move the task to the listfor tomorrow or revisit it later in the day.• Keep a journal; seeing both your goals and theprogress that you have made in writing can bevery motivational.• Set time aside for activities you enjoy, such asreading, mediation or listening to music. • Make time in your list for exercise. TheAmerican College of Sports Medicine recommends that you get 30 minutes of exercise, 5 days a week. This can easily be splitup into three, 10 minute segments. All you haveto do is make sure there is time for it in yourdaily schedule.~ Contributed by Marci Mantegna, Fitness Center SiteManager, CardioKinetics
