GRECO, MD | PRESIDENT Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends: It is with great pride that I accept the honor of serving as the President of the Northeastern Section for 2014-15. I am humbled by the fact that many of my own mentors and colleagues have also held this same office including Jack Sales, Alvaro Morales, David Patrick, Datta Wagle and others. I have them to thank for instilling in me the drive to serve our Section. I will strive to serve to be as effective as they were in this role. I would like to thank the section membership for putting their faith in me to serve as President. On behalf of the Section, I want to thank immediate Past-President Jerzy Gajewski for his leadership as he guided our association this past year. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEJOSEPH M. GRECO, MD | PRESIDENT

Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends:It is with great pride that I accept the honor of serving as the President of the Northeastern Section for 2014-15.

Many of us enjoyed the November 2014 meeting in Amelia Island which was considered by all to be a huge success. The scientific program was outstanding, providing a perfect blend of cutting edge information with practical guidance. Amelia Island welcomed everybody and the Ritz-Carlton was a perfect setting for this late fall escape. The meeting had a total of 302 attendees, including 169 professionals.

I invite all Section members to join us for the 67th Section meeting in Quebec City October 29 - October 31, 2015. The Scientific Committee Chair, Dr. Julie Franc-Guimond is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Montreal and a full time pediatric urologist at CHU Sainte Justine in Montreal. SECRETARY’S BLOG

MY TERM: HERE WE GO!

Timothy D. Averch, MD, FACS

As I begin my term as the Secretary for the Northeastern Section of the AUA, I have been contemplating my goals and objectives for the next four years for both the

Section and me. I can break these thoughts down into four areas of focus: Identity, Invigorate, Improve, and Importance.

Our Section has a unique signature in its geographic distribution. We have a uniform distribution of membership on both sides of the border. This has allowed for a cultural distinction that rivals the other sections. Our leadership and meeting locations have always taken advantage of that uniqueness. This identity should be emphasized.

Another focus is to invigorate membership and get them more involved and excited about the Section. We look to bring in new faces to committees and to the meetings. Emphasis will be placed upon ideas to enhance involvement from all walks of urology: private practice, academics, residents, scientists and advanced practice providers.

The role of the Secretary has been expanded by the Board to assist coordinating our annual meeting from year to year working with the President and the Meeting Chair. This will improve the processes and facilitate coordination of all things meeting related. There are efforts at the national AUA level towards meeting changes that we need to consider matching and to continue to work on generating new ideas to unremittingly improve the caliber of our already stellar meetings.

Lastly, I want all Northeastern Section members to see the value and importance in Section membership. This will serve to strengthen our identity, invigorate the membership, improve our meetings and other efforts and create a Section we can continue to be proud of and one we can share with the urological community at large. If anyone has thoughts, concerns, questions or ideas, please contact me at [email protected].

4 SPRING 2015

FOLLOWING ARE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SECTION’S NOVEMBER MEETING, AS WELL AS YEAR-END UPDATES.

FINANCEDr. Rob Siemens, Treasurer The Statement of Financial Position for 2014 year-end shows the Section’s Total Assets at approximately $1.78 million. Total Revenue of $439,811 and Total Expenses $737,963, resulted in an operating deficit of ($298,152).

Note: Read below to learn about the Section’s investment in a 2nd AUA Research Scholar ($250K investment). Total investment income of $86,453 resulted in a year-to-date decrease in Net Assets of $211,699.

INVESTMENTSMs. Dorothy Boyer, investment advisor, continues to advise the Section on our Merrill Lynch portfolio. The combined portfolio yield in 2014 was 4.4% based on the continued conservative 40/60 Equity/Fixed Income investment allocation.

BOARD ROTATIONThe Section maintains its even balance of U.S./Canadian representation on the Board of Directors, with Section President alternating each (or nearly each) year. At the November business meeting, Dr. Joseph Greco (Buffalo) became the new Section President and Dr. Ronald Kaufman (Albany) was elected President-Elect. Other new positions include Dr. Kenneth Pace (Toronto) who ascended to Treasurer-Elect, Dr. Jodi Maranchie (Pittsburgh) as Pennsylvania Rep, Dr. Julie Franc-Guimond (Montreal) as Canadian Member-at-Large and Dr. Darren Beiko (Kingston) as the Young Urologist from Canada.

2015 MEETING Dr. Julie Franc-Guimond has been appointed as the Program Chair and is actively planning the Section’s 67th Annual Meeting in Quebec City.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE (CORE ELECTORATE)In follow up to discussions in 2013-2014 about standardizing nominations and protocols, the Section approved a newly configured Nominating Committee. The Directors agreed that the composition of the Section Nominating Committee should be reorganized to include a group of eight members to include the five Officers, two past presidents and the Historian. This is in line with what the AUA has suggested as a best practice to determine individuals to fulfill Section committee and Board positions as well as nominations to the AUA for AUA committees, awards, external representatives, and the Section’s nomination for AUA President-Elect.

COST CUTTINGThe Board approved a new streamlined protocol for allowing the President to use the services of a Host City Advisor to help plan the annual meeting. New rules limit the number of individuals involved. Additional protocols

were approved regarding site visits, with movement away from Officers needing to participate in multiple activities, and more reliance on paid professional staff.

AUA MATCHING SCHOLAR PROGRAMDuring its meeting in November, the Section Board availed itself of AUA’s 5:1 match program to establish a second AUA/NSAUA/UCF research scholar. The Board approved this after due diligence and deliberation, confirming that a reasonable number of grant applications are received from the Section in a given year. This match required $250K from the Section which was matched by $1.25 million from the AUA for a total $1.5 endowment. Beginning in 2016, this designated endowment will fund an MD or PhD scholar within the Section for a one or two-year project.

HISTORIAN’S REPORTDr. Ron Rabinowitz Dr. Rabinowitz reported that the AUA won two awards for its “Skeletons in the Closet: Indignities and Injustices in Medicine” exhibit (which was presented at last year’s 2013 Section meeting in Saratoga Springs). He reported also on AUA’s History of Urology Forum and encouraged all to continue to submit papers both for the Section meeting and this AUA program. Dr. Rabinowitz anticipates that the next traveling history exhibit at the Section meeting will be the “Chief Complaints” exhibit at the 2016 Buffalo meeting.

REPORT FROM AUA BOARD REPRESENTATIVE Dr. John DenstedtDr. Denstedt reported on various items including AUA’s eminent launch of Urology Practice -- a new clinical Journal of the AUA, with Dr. Carl Olsson as Editor. He summarized AUA’s online learning management system which has become known as AUAU (AUAUniversity) and encouraged all to visit the website. He also reported that significant work is underway in selecting several new Chairs/Consultants for AUA’s major program areas. These include chairs for Education, Research, a new Journal of Urology Editor and a new Global Initiatives Chair. Dr. Manoj Monga will begin as AUA’s Secretary in May 2015.

DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORTDr. Joe GrecoDr. Greco reported on industry funding which totaled $301,375 in 2014, the highest level during the past three years and 3 percent more than a five year average. Although exhibits revenue was down (due mostly to the meeting being out of Section), other general industry support was robust. The committee’s efforts included canvassing exhibitors and companies at the AUA Annual Meeting (May), interactions with Canadian companies at the CUA Meeting (June) and a face-to-face meeting with approximately 15 Canadian companies in attendance in Montreal (August).

FUN NIGHT TO SHOWCASE QUEBEC’S BEAUTIFUL PARLIAMENT BUILDING

The Parliament Building is one of the key works of Eugene-Etienne Tache (1836-1912). The quadrilateral building surrounding an inner courtyard was constructed between 1877 and 1886 in the Second Empire style and is unique in North America. Although Tache drew his architectural inspiration from the Louvre in Paris, he also set out to design a building that would tell the story of Quebec. The imposing fountain at the main entrance pays homage to the Amerindians, Quebec’s first inhabitants. Here too is a pair of remarkable sculptures by Louis-Philippe Hebert—Fisherman with Spear and A Halt in the Forest. The statues decorating the main facade of the Parliament Building represent men and women who shaped the history of Quebec, from the discovery of Canada by Jacques Cartier in 1534 to the birth of Confederation in 1867.

Together, these historical figures give meaning to Quebec’s motto, “Je me souviens” (I remember), which Tache had engraved over the main entrance.

Our Fun Night evening will include a tour of the beautiful and breathtaking building. Dinner will be served, and entertainment will be provided by the famous Patrice Painchaud Trio. For several years now, the Painchaud Family, and particularly Patrice, has been offering various shows promoting international and Quebecoise music. For your evening, Patrice will be joined by two other musicians to form an exceptional trio with an unlimited repertoire. Not only will Patrice amaze you with his musical skills, but you will be charmed by his sense of humor. Beware, his laugh is highly contagious! By the end of the evening, you will want to get up on your feet and even join Patrice! This will truly be a breathtaking and interactive evening!
