Çré Nåsiàha Mahä-mantra

ugraà véraà mahä-viñëuà jvalantaà sarvato mukham / nåsiàhaà bhéñaëaà bhadraà

måtyur måtyuà namämy ahaà //

“I bow down to Lord Nåsiàha who is ferocious and heroic like Lord Viñëu. He is burning from every side. He is terrific, auspicious and the death of death personified.” This mantra is quoted or at least referred to in many scriptures. The Nåsiàha Tapäni Upaniñad also gives the history of this mantra. In the last creation the presiding deity was Lord Nåsiàhadeva and this was the mantra inspiring the entire creation into which Lord Brahmä was initiated, as in the present creation the presiding deity is Çré Kåñëa and He initiated Brahmä into the Käma-Gäyatri. In Jagannätha Puré the püjäris believe that Lord Jagannätha is from the previous creation and was originally worshipped as Lord Nåsiàhadeva. Jagannätha Puré Dhäma floats on the ocean of devastation and is thus never destroyed. Every twelve or nineteen years the Deities' forms are changed. The installation yajïa for the new Deities takes about two weeks and is mainly comprised of a Nåsiàha mantrawhich is chanted 20,000 times.

Nåsiàha gäyatré

oà vajra-nakäya vidmahe tékñëa daàsträya dhémahi

tan no narasiàhaù pracodayät(e)

“Let us meditate on He who is known as the possessor of nails as hard as thunderbolts and sharp teeth. Let us be enthused by Lord Nåsiàhadeva.” The original gäyatré mantra, the Käma-gäyatré, glorifies the qualities of Lord Çré Kåñëa, the Absolute Truth. Each expansion of the original Çré Kåñëa has unique attributes, which are glorified in corresponding gäyatré mantras, all of which expand from the original Käma-gäyatré. These gäyatré mantras are mainly used in Deity worship.

tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-çåëgaà dalita-hiraìyakaçipu-tanu-bhåëgam /

keçava dhåta-narahari-rüpa jaya jagadéça hare jaya jagadéça hare, jaya jagadéça hare //

O my Lord, Your hands are very beautiful, like the lotus flower, but with Your long nails You have ripped apart the wasp Hiraìyakaçipu. Unto You, Lord of the universe, do I offer my humble obeisances. (Çréla Prabhupäda's translation.)

Prayers from the Çrémad-Bhägavatam

The Çrémad-Bhägavatam itself contains enough prayers for an entire book therefore we tried to focus more on verses that describe the form or the activities of the Lord.

caturdaçaà närasiàhaà bibhrad daityendram ürjitam /

dadära karajair üräv erakäà kaöa-kåd yathä //

In the fourteenth incarnation, the Lord appeared as Nåsiàha and bifurcated the strong body of the atheist Hiraëyakaçipu with His nails, just as a carpenter pierces cane (1.3.18).

trai-piñöaporu-bhaya-hä sa nåsiàha-rüpaà kåtvä bhramad-bhrukuöi-daàñöra-karäla-vaktram /

daityendram äñu gadayäbhipatantam äräd ürau nipätya vidadära nakhaiù sphurantam //

The Personality of Godhead assumed the incarnation of Nåsiàhadeva in order to vanquish the great fears of the demigods. He killed the king of the demons, Hiraëyakaçipu, who challenged the Lord with a club in his hand, by placing the demon on His thighs and piercing him with His nails, rolling His eyebrows in anger and showing His fearful teeth and mouth (2.7.14).

oà namo bhagavate narasiàhäya namas tejas-tejase ävir-ävirbhava

vajra-nakha vajra-daàñöra karmäsayän / randhaya randhaya tamo grasa grasa oà svähä

abhayam abhayam ätmani bhüyiñöhä oà kñrauà //

I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Nåsiàhadeva, the source of all power. O my Lord who possesses nails and teeth just like thunderbolts, kindly vanquish our demoniac desires for fruitive activity in the material world. Please appear in our hearts and drive away our ignorance, so that by Your mercy we may become fearless in the struggle for existance in this material world (5.18.8).

dugeñv aöavy-äli-mukhädiñu prabhuù päyän nåsiàho 'sura-yüthapäraiù / vimuïcato yasya mahäööa-häsaà

diço vinedur nyapataàç ca grabhäù //

May Lord Nåsiàhadeva, who appeared as the enemy of Hiraëyakaçipu, protect me in all directions. His loud laughing vibrated in all directions and caused the pregnant wives of the asuras to have miscarriages. May that Lord be kind to protect me in difficult places like the forest and battlefront (6.8.14).

vidikñu dikñürdhvam adhaù samantäd antar bahir bhagavän närasiàhaù / prahäpayal loka-bhayaà svanena sva-tejasä grasta-samasta-tejäù //

Prahläda Mahäräja loudly chanted the Holy Name of Lord Nåsiàha. May Lord Nåsiàhadeva, roaring for His devotee, Prahläda Mahäräja, protect us from all fear of dangers created by stalwart leaders in all directions through poison, weapons, water, fire, air and so on. May the Lord cover their influence by His own transcendental influence. May Nåsiàhadeva protect us from all directions and in all corners, above, below, within and without (6.8.34).

saàrambha-duñprekñya-karäla-locano vyättänanäntam vilihan sva-jihvayä /

asåg-laväkatäruëa-keçaränano yathäntra-mälé dvipa-hatyayä hariù //

The hair on Lord Nåsiàhadeva's face, being sprinkled with drops of blood, was reddish and looked very beautiful. Lord Nåsiàhadeva pierced Hiraëyakaçipu's abdomen with His nails, pulled out the demon's intestines and wore them as a garland, which enhanced His beauty. Thus the Lord became very fearsome, like a lion engaged in fighting an elephant (7.8.30).

nakhäìkurotpäöita-håt-saroruhaà visåjya-tasyänucarän udäyudhän /

ahan samastän nakha-çastra-päëibhir drodaëòa-yürtho 'nupathän sahasraçaù //

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who had many, many arms, first uprooted Hiraëyakaçipu's heart and then threw him aside and turned toward the demon's soldiers.

These soldiers had come in thousands to fight with Him with raised weapons and were very faithful followers of Hiraëyakaçipu, but Lord Nåsiàhadeva killed all of them merely with the ends of His nails (7.8.31).

saöävadhütä jaladäù paräpatan grahäç ca tad-dåñöi-vimuñöa-rociñaù / ambhodhayaù çväsa-hatä vicukñubhur nirhräda-bhétä digibhä vicukruñuù //

The hair on Nåsiàhadeva's head shook the clouds and scattered them here and there, His glaring eyes stole the effulgence of the luminaries in the sky, and His breathing agitated the seas and oceans. Because of His roaring, all the elephants in the world began to cry in fear (7.8.32).

dyaus tat-saöotkñipta-vimäna-saëkulä protsarpata kñamä ca padäbhipéòitä / çailäù samutpetur amuñya raàhasä tat-tejasä khaà kakubho na rejire //

The airplanes of the devas were thrown into outer space and the upper planetary system by the hair on Nåsiàhadeva's head. Because of the pressure of the Lord's lotus feet, the earth appeared to slip from its position, and all the hills and mountains sprang up due to His intolerable force. Because of the Lord's bodily effulgence, both the sky and all directions diminished in their natural illumination (7.8.33).

tataù sabhäyäm upaviñöam uttame nåpäsane sambhåta-tehjasaà vibhum / alakñita-dvairatham atyamarñaëaà

pracaëòa-vaktraà na babhäja kaçcana //

Manifesting a full effulgence and a fearsome countenance, Lord Nåsiàha, being very angry and finding no contestant to face His power and opulence, then sat down in the assembly hall on the excellent throne of the king. Because of fear and obedience, no one could come forward to serve the Lord directly (7.8.34).

evaà sva-karma-patitaà bhava-vaitaraëyäm anyonya-janma-maraëäçana-bhéta-bhétam /

paçyaï janaà sva-para-vigraha-vaira-maitraà hanteti päracara pépåhi müòham adya //

My dear Lord, You are always transcendentally situated on the other side of the river of death, but because of the reactions of our own activities, we are suffering on this side. Indeed, we have fallen into this river and are repeatedly suffering the pains of birth and death and eating horrible things. Now kindly look upon us-not only upon me but also upon all others who are suffering-and by Your causeless mercy and compassion, deliver us and maintain us (7.9.41).

ko nv atra te 'khila-guro bhagavan prayäsa uttäraëe 'sya bhava-sambhava-lopa-hetoù / müdheñu vai mahad-anugraha ärta-bandho kià tena te priya-janän anusevatäà naù //

O my Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, original spiritual master of the entire world, what is the difficulty for You, who manage the affairs of the universe, in delivering the fallen souls engaged in Your devotional service? You are the friend of all suffering humanity, and for great personalities it is necessary to show mercy to the foolish. Therefore I think that You will show Your causeless mercy to persons like us, who engage in Your service (7.9.42).

oà namo bhagavate tubhyaà puruñäya mahätmane / haraye 'dbhuta-siàhäya

brahmaëe paramätmaëe //

O my Lord, full of six opulences, O Supreme Person! O Supreme Soul, killer of all miseries! O Supreme Person in the form of a lion and man, let me offer my respectful obeisances unto You! (7.10.10).

etad ya ädi-puruñasya mågendra-léläà daityendra-yütha-pa-vadhaà prayataù paöheta /

daityätmajasya ca satäà pravarasya puëyaà çrutvänubhävam akuto-bhayam eti lokam //

Prahläda Mahäräja was the best among exalted devotees. Anyone who with great attention hears this narration concerning the activities of Prahläda Mahäräja, the killing of Hiraëyakaçipu, and the activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Nåsiàhadeva, surely reaches the spiritual world, where there is no anxiety (7.10.47.).

namas te 'dbhuta-siàhäya sädhu-loka-bhayäpaha /

Obeisances to You, the amazing lion [Lord Nåsiàha], who remove Your saintly devotees' fear (10.40.19).

Ugra-Nåsiàha dhyäna In the practical aspects of deity worship there is a section called yoga or purificatory procedures, performed just before the worship of the deities. Dhyäna, meditation on the form of the Lord for the purification of the mind, is a part of yoga. These prayers of the Çrémad Bhägavatam are the dhyäna mantras in the worship of Ugra Nåsiàha.

nåsiàha-rüpas tad alaà bhayänakam //

pratapta-cämékara-caëòa-locanaà sphurat saöä-keçara-jåmbhitänanam / karäla-daàñöraà karaväla-caïcala-

kñuränta-jihvaà bhrukuöé-mukholbaëam //

stabdhordhva-karëam giri-kandarädbhuta- vyättäsya-näsaà hanu-bheda-bhéñaëam /

divi-spåçat käyam adérgha-pévara- grévoru-vakñaù-sthalam alpa-madhyamam //

candräàçu-gauraiç churitam tanüruhair viñvag bhujänéka-çataà nakhäyudham /

duräsadaà sarva-nijetaräyudha- praveka-vidrävita-daitya-dänavam //

Hiraëyakaçipu studied the form of the Lord, trying to decide who the form of Nåsiàhadeva standing before him was. The Lord's form was extremely fearsome because of His angry eyes, which resembled molten gold; His shining mane, which expanded the dimensions of His fearful face; His deadly teeth; and His razor-sharp tongue, which moved about like a dueling sword. His ears were erect and motionless, and His nostrils and gaping mouth appeared like caves of a mountain. His jaws parted fearfully, and His entire body touched the sky. His neck was very short and thick, His chest broad, His waist thin, and the hairs on His body as white as the rays of the moon. His arms, which resembled flanks of soldiers, spread in all directions as He killed the demons, rogues and atheists with His conchshell, disc, club, lotus and other natural weapons (7.8.19-22).

The Manyu Sükta of the Åg Veda Manyu, the personification and presiding Deity of anger, is a form of Nåsiàhadeva. This çükta is chanted during fire sacrifices for the destruction of enemies. Åg Veda: 10.6.15

TEXT 1 hariù oà

yaste manyo 'vidhadujra jäyaka jaha ojaù puñyati viçvamänupak / sähyäma däsamäryam tvayä yujä sahaskåtena sahasä sahasvatä //

O Manyu, the persons who worship You, who is like a thunderbolt, the destroyer of enemies, enjoys all power and strength combined, may we overcome our enemies with You as our friend, invigorating and strong.

manyurindro manyureväsa devo manyurhotä varuëo jätavedäù / manyuà viça iÉate manuñéryäù pähi no manyo tapasä sajoñäù //

Manyu is Indra, He is Varuna and Agni. Those of human descent praise Manyu. Protect us Manyu, be pleased with our austerities.

TEXT 3 abhéhi manyo tapasastavéyän tapasä yujä vi jahi çatrün /

amitrahä våtrahä dasyuhä ca viçvä vasünya bharä tvaà naù //

Come to us Manyu, you who are the strongest of the strong. With austerity as your companion, overthrow our enemies. Give us spiritual wealth, O slayer of enemies, adversaries and foes.

TEXT 4 tvaà hi manyo abhi bhütyojäù svayam bhurbhämau abhimätiñähaù /

viçva carñaëiù sahuriù sahävä-nasmasvoja påtanäsu dhehi //

Give us strength in battle, Manyu, O you who posses overpowering strength. You are self-existent, furious, the overthrower of enemies, the beholder of all, enduring, and vigorous.

TEXT 5 abhägaù sannapa pareto asmi tava kratvä taviñasya pracetaù / taà tvä manyo akraturjihéÉä-haà svä tanur-baladeyäya mehi //

O Lord Manyu, not taking part in Your worship (not offering oblations at the sacrifice) I was forced to retreat before my enemies. I avoided and neglected Your worship. Yet please be kind and give me strength.

TEXT 6 ayaà te asmyupa mehyarväì pratécénaù sahure viçvadhäyaù /

manyo vajrin-nabhi mämä vavåtsva hanäva dasyugà ruta bodhyäpeù //

I am Yours! Come to me, turn Your face towards me! O resister of the foes, sustainer of all, Manyu, the holder of a thunderbolt, come to me. Let us slay the demons, and help Your devotees.

TEXT 7 abhi prehi dakñinato bhavä me 'dhä våträëi jaìghanäva müri /

juhomi te dharuëaà madhvo agra mubhä upaàçu prathamä pibäva //

Approach me by my right side and let us slay a multitude of foes. I offer You the best part of the Soma juice, let us drink it together in privacy.

Åg Veda: 10.6.16

TEXT 1 tvayä manyo saraöhamärujanto harñamäëaso dhåñitä marutvaù /

tigmeñava äyudhä saàçiçänä abhi prayantu naro agnirüpäù //

May the priests, who resemble Agni, ascend the same chariot as You, O Manyu, who is accompanied by the Maruts. May You proceed in battle, advancing, exulting, indignant, armed with sharp arrows, whetting Your weapons.

TEXT 2 agniriva manyo tviñitaù sahasva senänérnaù sahure hüta edhi /

hatväya çatrün vi bhajasva veda aujo mimäno vi mådho nudasva //

Blazing like fire, O Manyu, overcome our foes, come as our general, when invoked by us in battle. Having slain the enemies, divide their wealth. Granting us strength, scatter our foes.

TEXT 3 sahasva manyo abhimätimasme rujan måëan pramåëan prehi çatrün /

ugraà te päjo nanvä rurudhre vaçi vaçaà nayasa ekaja tvam //

O Manyu, overthrow our enemies. Advance against our foes, wounding, killing, annihilating them. O You who depend on no-one, who can resist Your fierce might?

TEXT 4 eko bahunämasi manyavéÉito viçaàviçam yudhaye saà çiçädhi /

akåttaruk tvayä yujä vayaà dyumantaà ghoñaà vijayäya kåëmahe //

You are praised, O Manyu, as the conqueror of all. Help us contend with all men. With You as our friend, O radiant one, we cry out in victory.

TEXT 5 vijeñakådindra ivänavabravo 'smäkaà manyo adhipä bhaveha /

priyaà te näma sahure gåëémasi vidmä tamutsaà yata äbabhütha //

O Manyu, giver of victory, You are irreproachable like Lord Indra. Please protect this sacrifice. O Enduring One, we sing to you appropriate praises. We know this to be the source where You have come from.

TEXT 6 äbhütyä sahajä vajra säyaka saho bibharñya-bhibhüta uttaram /

kratvä no manyo saha medhyedi mahä-dhanarya puruhüta saàsåji //

O Manyu, You are like a destructive thunderbolt, the overpowerer of foes, the twin brother of victory and have extreme strength. Be favourable to us, Manyu, in our deeds, O You who are

invoked by many in the shock of battle.

TEXT 7 saàsåñöaà dhanam ubhayaà samäkåta

masmabhayaà dattäà varuëaçca manyuù / bhiyaà dadhänä hådayeñu çatravaù

paräjitäso apa ni layantäm //

May Manyu and Varuna bestow upon us undivided spiritual and material wealth; may our enemies, fear within their hearts, be overcome and utterly destroyed.

Prayers from the Nåsiàha Püräna

Çré Nåsiàha Praëäma These prayers were offered by Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu to Lord Nåsiàhadeva in the Jagannätha temple. Once entering the temple compound through the Siàha-Dvära there are 22 steps one has to climb. On the southern side of the steps there is a Nåsiàha temple, Mahaprabhu would take darçan first there, while paying obeisances He would recite these verses. After that he would go on for Jagannätha's darçan.

namas te nara-siàhäya prahlädähläda-däyine / hiraëyakaçipor vakñaù çilä-öaìka-nakhälaye //

I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, Lord Nåsiàhadeva. You are the giver of pleasure to Mahäräja Prahläda, and Your nails cut the chest of Hiraëyakaçipu like a chisel cutting stone.

ito nåsiàhaù parato nåsiàho yato yato yämi tato nåsiàhaù / bahir nåsiàho hådaye nåsiàho

nåsiàham ädià çaraëaà prapadye //

Lord Nåsiàhadeva is here, and He is also there on the opposite side. Wherever I go, there I see Lord Nåsiàhadeva. He is outside and within My heart. Therefore I take shelter of Lord Nåsiàhadeva, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead.

tapta-häöaka-keçänta jvalat-pävaka-locana /

vajrädhika-nakha-sparça divya-siàha namo’stu te //

O Divine Lion, Your fiery eyes radiate inside Your mane appearing like Molten gold, and the tips of Your nails are stronger than a thunderbolt. Obeisances to You.” (N.P 1.2)

päntu vo narasiàhasya nakha-läïgüla-koöayaù / hiraëyakaçipor-vakñaù

kñoträsåk-kardamäruëäù // May the tips of Your nails, which are like a plough, protect You. The nails which are red with the muddy blood in the course of tilling the land of the chest of Hiraëyakaçipu (N.P. 1.3).

Åëa-mocana Nåsiàha Stotra In the Åg Veda Saàhitä it is stated that when one is born he has three kinds of obligations. To the sages, to the demigods and to the forfathers. The obligations are performing austerities, performing yajïas and begetting children respectively. This stotram of the Nåsiàha Püräëa is a prayer for the release of all kinds material and worldly obligations.

TEXT 1 devatä-kärya-siddhyartaà

sabhä-söambha-samudbhavam / Çré nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà

namämi åëa-muktaye //

Lord Nåsiàha is to be worshipped if perfection is desired. Unto the all-powerful Çré Nåsiàha, who appeared from the pillar of the assembly hall, I offer my obeisances so that I may become released from mundane obligations.

TEXT 2 lakñmyälingita vämängaà bhaktänäà vara-däyakam / Çré nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà

namämi åëa-muktaye //

Embraced on His left side by Lakñmédevé, Lord Nåsiàha gives benedictions to His devotees. My obeisances to the all-powerful Lord Nåsiàha, so that I may be released from all other obligations.

TEXT 3 antra-mälä-dharaà çaìkha cakräbjäyudha-dhäriëam / Çré nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà

Wearing a garland of intestines, He carries the conch, disc, lotus, club and another weapons. Unto Lord Nåsiàha, the all-powerful, I offer my obeisances to become free from worldly debts.

TEXT 4 samaraëät sarva-päpa-ghnaà

kadrüja-viña-näçanam / Çré nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà

namämi åëa-muktaye //

By remembrance of Lord Nåsiàha all sins are destroyed and the poisonous effect of the descendants of Kadrü (serpents) are nullified. My obeisances unto Him the all-powerful, so that I may become free from all other debts.

TEXT 5 siàha-nädena mahatä

dig-danti bhaya-näçanam / Çré nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà

namämi åëa-muktaye //

By His greatly ferocious roar and His fearful teeth, which encompass all ten directions, He destroys all fear. Unto the all-powerful Lord Nåsiàha my obeisances, so that I may become free from worldly obligations.

TEXT 6 prahläda-varadaà Çréçaà daityeçvara-vidäraëam /

Çré nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà namämi åëa-muktaye //

Lord Nåsiàha is the Lord of Lakñmé and the giver of benedictions to Prahläda Mahäräja, yet He ripped apart the king of the demons, Hiraëyakaçipu. May I become free from debts by offering obeisances unto the all-powerful Lord Nåsiàha.

TEXT 7 krüra-grahaiù péòitänäà

bhaktänän abhaya-pradam / Çré nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà

namämi åëa-muktaye //

When His devotees are oppressed by inauspicious planets, Lord Nåsiàha gives them fearlessness. I offer my obeisances unto the all-powerful Lord Nåsiàha so that I may be released from worldly obligations.

TEXT 8 veda-vedänta-yajïeçaà

brahma-rudrädi-vanditam / Çré nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà

namämi åëa-muktaye //

Lord Nåsiàha is the master of the Vedas, Vedänta and the process of sacrifice. He is offered prayers by Lord Brahmä, Lord çiva and the other demigods. I offer my obeisances unto the all-powerful Lord Nåsiàha so that I may be freed from all other debts.

TEXT 9 ya idaà paöhate nityam åëa-mocana-saàjïitam /

anåëé jäyate sadyo dhanaà çéghram aväpnuyät //

Whoever reads this regularly, consciously desiring freedom from debts, immediately becomes freed from all obligations and very soon attains opulence.

The Nåsiàha-Kavaca of the Brahmäëòa Püräëa

TEXT 1 nåsiàha-kavacaà vakñye prahlädenoditaà purä /

sarva-rakña-karaà punyaà sarvopadrava-näçanam //

I shall now recite the Nåsiàha-kavaca, formerly spoken by Prahläda Mahäräja. It is most pious, vanquishes all kinds of impediments, and provides one all protection.

TEXT 2 sarva-saàpat-karaà caiva

svarga-mokña-pradäyakam / dhyätvä nåsiàhaà deveçaà hema-siàhäsana sthitam //

It bestows all opulence, and can give one elevation to the heavenly planets or liberation. One should meditate upon Lord Nåsiàha, Lord of the demigods, seated upon a golden throne.

lakñmyäliìgita-vämäìgaà vibhütibhé rüpäçritam //

His mouth is wide open, He has three eyes and He is as radiant as the autumn moon. He is embraced by Lakñmé devé on His left side, and His form is the shelter of all opulences, both material and spiritual.

TEXT 4 catur-bhujaà komaläìgaà svarëa-kuëòala-çobhitam /

saroja-çobhitoraskaà ratna-keyüra-mudritam //

The Lord has four arms, and His limbs are very soft. He is decorated with golden earrings. His chest is resplendent like the lotus flower, and His arms are decorated with jewel studded ornaments.

TEXT 5 tapta-käïcana-saìkäçaà péta-nirmala-väsasam / indrädi-sura-mauliñöhaù

sphuran mäëikya-déptibhiù //

He is dressed in a spotless yellow garment, which exactly resembles molten gold. He is the original cause of existence, beyond mundane sphere, for the great demigods headed by Indra. He appears bedecked with rubies which are blazingly effulgent.

TEXT 6 viräjita-pada-dvandvaà

çaìkha-cakrädi-hetibhiù / garutmatä ca vinayät

stüyamänaà mudänvitam //

His two feet are very attractive and He is armed with various weapons such as the conch, disc, etc. Garuòa joyfully offers prayers with great reverence.

TEXT 7 sva-håt-kamalasaàväsaà kåtvä tu kavacaà pathet /

nåsimùo me çiraù pätu loka-rakñärtha-sambhavaù //

Having seated Lord Nåsiàhadeva upon the lotus of one's heart, one should recite the following mantra: " May Lord Nåsiàha, who protects all the planetary systems, protect my head."

sarvago'pi stambha väsaù phalaà me rakñatu dhvanim /

nåsiàho me dåçau pätu soma-süryägìi-locanaù //

Although the Lord is all-pervading, He hid Himself within a pillar. May He protect my speech and the results of my activities. May Lord Nåsiàha, whose eyes are the moon, the sun, and fire, protect my eyes.

TEXT 9 småtam me pätu nåhariù muni-varya-stuti-priyaù / näsaà me siàha-näsas tu

mukhaà lakñmé-mukha-priyaù //

May Lord Nåhari, who is pleased by the prayers offered by the best of sages, protect my memory. May He who has the nose of a lion protect my nose, and may He whose face is very dear to the goddess of fortune protect my mouth.

TEXT 10 sarva-vidyädhipaù pätu

nåsiàho rasanaà mama / vaktraà pätv indu-vadanaà sadä prahläda-vanditaù //

May Lord Nåsiàha, who is the knower of all sciences, protect my sense of taste. May He whose face is beautiful as the full moon and who is offered prayers by Prahläda Mahäräja protect my face.

TEXT 11 nåsiàhaù pätu me kaëöhaà

skandau bhü-bhåd ananta-kåt / divyästra-çobhita-bhujaù

nåsiàhaù pätu me bhujaù //

May Lord Nåsiàha protect my throat. He is the sustainer of the earth and the performer of unlimitedly wonderful activities. May He protect my shoulders. His arms are resplendent with transcendental weapons. May He protect my shoulders.

TEXT 12 karau me deva-varado

nåsiàhaù pätu sarvataù / hådayaà yogi-sädhyaç ca

niväsaà pätu me hariù //

May the Lord, who bestows benedictions upon the demigods, protect my hands, and may He protect me from all sides. May He who is achieved by the perfect yogis protect my heart, and may Lord Hari protect my dwelling place.

TEXT 13 madhyaà pätu hiraëyäkña vakñaù-kukñi-vidäraëaù / näbhià me pätu nåhariù

sva-näbhi-brahma-saàstutaù //

May He who ripped apart the abdomen of the great demon Hiranyäkña (Hiraëkaçipu) protect my waist, and may Lord Nåhari protect my navel. He is offered prayers by Lord Brahmä, who sprang from His own navel.

TEXT 14 brahmäëòa-kotayaù kaöyäà

yasyäsau pätu me kaöià / guhyaà me pätu guhyänäà

mantränäà guhya-rüpa-dåk //

May He on whose hips rest all the universes protect my hips. May the Lord protect my private parts. He is the knower of all mantras and all mysteries, but He Himself is not visible.

TEXT 15 ürü manobhavaù pätu jänuné nara-rüpa-dåk /

jaìghe pätu dharä-dhara hartä yo 'sau nå-keñaré //

May He who is the original Cupid protect my thighs. May He who exhibits a human-like form protect my knees. May the remover of the burden of the earth, who appears in a form which is half-man and half-lion, protect my calves.

TEXT 16 sura-räjya-pradaù pätu pädau me nåharéçvaraù / sahasra-çérñä-puruñaù

pätu me sarvaças tanum //

May the bestower of heavenly opulence protect my feet. He is the Supreme Controller in the form of a man and lion combined. May the thousand-headed Supreme enjoyer protect my body from all sides and in all respects.

TEXT 17 mahograù pürvataù pätu mahä-virägrajo 'ghnitaù / mahä-viñëur dakñiëe tu

mahä-jvalas tu nairåtaù //

May that most ferocious personality protect me from the east. May He who is superior to the greatest heroes protect me from the southeast, which is presided over by Agni. May the Supreme Viñëu protect me from the south, and may that person of blazing luster protect me from the southwest.

TEXT 18 paçcime pätu sarveço

diçi me sarvatomukhaù / nåsiàhaù pätu väyavyäà

saumyäà bhüñaëa-vigrahaù //

May the Lord of everything protect me from the west. His faces are everywhere, so please may He protect me from this direction. May Lord Nåsiàha protect me from the northwest, which is predomi nated by Väyu, and May He whose form is in itself the supreme ornament protect me from the north, where Soma resides.

TEXT 19 éçanyäà pätu bhadro me

sarva-maìgala-däyakaù / saàsära-bhayataù pätu

måtyor mröyur nåkeñaré //

May the all-auspicious Lord, who Himself bestows all auspiciousness, protect me from the northeast, the direction of the sun-god, and may He who is death personified protect me from fear of death and rotation in this material world.

TEXT 20 idaà nåsiàha-kavacaà

prahläda-mukha-maëòitam / bhaktimän yaù pathenaityaà sarva-päpaiù pramucyate //

This Nåsiàha-kavaca has been ornamented by issuing from the mouth of Prahläda Mahäräja. A devotee who reads this becomes freed from all sins.

taà taà präpnoty asaàçayam //

Whatever one desires in this world he can attain without doubt. One can have wealth, many sons, and a long life.

TEXT 22 sarvatra jayam äpnoti sarvatra vijayé bhavet /

bhümyantarékña-divyänäm grahänäà vini väraëam //

He becomes victorious who desires victory and indeed becomes a conqueror. He wards off the bad influences of planets, earthly, heavenly and everything in between.

TEXT 23 våçcikoraga-sambhüta- viñäpaharaëaà param /

brahma-räkñasa-yakñäëäà dürotsäraëa-käraëam //

This is the supreme remedy for the poisonous effects of serpents and scorpions, and brahma rakñasas, ghosts and yakñas are driven far away.

TEXT 24 bhuje vä täla-pätre vä

kavacaà likhitaà çubham / kara-müle dhåtaà yena

sidhyeyuù karma-siddhayaù //

One may write this most auspicious prayer on his arm, or inscribe it on a palm-leaf and attach it to his wrist, and all his activities will become perfect.

TEXT 25 deväsura-manuñyeñu

svaà svam eva jayaà labhet / eka-sandhyaà tri-sandhyaà vä

yaù pathen niyato naraù //

One who regularly chants this prayer, whether once or thrice (daily), he becomes victorious whether among demigods, demons or human beings.

TEXT 26 sarva-maìgala-maìgalyaà bhuktià muktià ca vindati /

pathet çuddhätmanäm nånäm //

One who, with purified heart, recites this prayer 32,000 times attains the most auspicious of all auspicious things, and material enjoyment and liberation are already understood to be available to such a person.

TEXT 27 kavacasyäsya mantrasya

mantra-siddhiù-prajäyate / anena mantra-räjena

kåtvä bhasmabhir mantränäm //

This kavaca-mantra is the king of all mantras. One attains by it what would be attained by anointing oneself with ashes and chanting all other mantras.

TEXT 28 tilakaà vinyased yas tu

tasya graha-bhayaà haret / tri-väram japamänas tu

dattaà väryabhimantrya ca //

Having marked one's body with tilak, taking äcamana with water and reciting this mantra three times, the fear of all inauspicious planers is removed.

TEXT 29 prasayed yo naro mantraà nåsiàha-dhyänam äcaret / tasya rogäù praëaçyanti

ye ca syuù kukñi-sambhaväù //

That person who recites this mantra, meditating upon Lord Nåsiàhadeva, has all of his diseases vanquished, including those of the abdomen.

TEXT 30 garjantaà gärjayantaà nija-bhuja-paöalaà sphoöayantaà hatantaà rüpyantaà täpayantaà divi bhuvi ditiyaà kñepayantaà kñipantaà / krandantaà roñayantaà diçi diçi satantaà saàharantaà bharantaà vékñantaà pürëayantaà kara-nikara-çatair divya-siàhaà namämi //

Lord Nåsiàha roars loudly and causes others to roar. With His multitudes of arms He tears the demons asunder and kills them in this way. He is always seeking out and tormenting the demonic descendants of Dité, both on this earth planet and in the higher planets, and He throws them down and scatters them. He cries with great anger as He destroys the demons in all directions, yet with His unlimited hands He sustains, protects, and nourishes the cosmic manifestation. I offer my respectful obeisances to the Lord, who has assumed the form of a

iti Çré brähmäëòa-puräëe prahlädoktaà Çré-nåsiàha-kavacaà saàpürëam

Thus ends the Nåsiàha-kavaca as it is described by Prahläda Mahäräja in the Brahmäëòa Puräëa.

Çré Nåsiàha kavaca of the Trailokya-Vijaya

This Nåsiàha-Kavaca is part of the Trailokya Vijaya chapter of the Brahma-Saàhitä (not the Brahma Saàhita that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu found). These mantras were given by Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Thäkura for the protection of those sannyäsa disciples who were sent to the the west for preaching.

TEXT 1 Çré närada uväca

indra-adi deva våindeça päteçvara jagat-pate

mahä viñëor nåisimhäya / kavaco brühi me prabho

yasya prana thanäd vidvän trailokya vijayi bhavet //

çri Närada Muni said: My dear father, lord and master of the universe. You are the lord of the demigods headed by Indra. Kindly tell me the Kavaca mantra of Lord Nåsiàha the great incarnation of Viñëu. By reading this Kavaca aloud a learned person becomes victorious through the three worlds.

TEXT 2 Çré brahmoväca

çåëu närada vakñyämi putra çreñöha tapodhana / kavacam narasiàhasya

trailokya vijaya bhavet //

Lord Brahmä said: My dear Närada best of my sons,who is rich in austerity please hear me. I shall speak this Kavaca of Lord Narasiàha which gives victory over the three worlds.

trailokya vijayi bhavet / çreñöhäham jagatam vatsa

paöhanät dhäraëät yataù //

My dear boy by the recitation of this Kavaca an eloquent person will become victorious throughout the three worlds. It is by reciting and meditating on this that I am the creator of all these planetary systems.

TEXT 4 lakñmér jagat-trayaà päti saàhartä ca maheçvaraù / paöhanäd dhäraëäd devä babhüvuç cädigéçvaräù //

It is by reciting and meditating upon this that Lakñmi can maintain the three worlds, and Lord çiva (Maheçvara) can destroy them. Similarly are the demigods the controller of the different directions.

TEXT 5 brahma mantra nayam vakñye

bhütädi vinväkaram yasya prasädad durväsä /

trailokya vijayi muniù paöhanäd dhäraësd yasya

çästä ca krodha bhairavaù //

I shall speak this essence of Vedic mantras, which wards off all kinds of ghosts and hobgoblins. By it's grace the sage Durväsä became victorious throughout the three worlds demanding respect and most fearful in His anger.

TEXT 6 trailokya-vijayasyasä kavacasya prajäpatiù / åñiç chandaç ca gäyatré

nåsiàho devatä vibhuù //

For this Kavaca, which is directly perceived as giving victory over the three worlds, I (Brahma) am the åñi, Gäyatré is the meter, and the all-powerful Nåsiàha is the Deity.

TEXT 7-8 kñrauà béjaà me çiraù pätu candra-varëo mahä-manuù / ugram véraà mahä-viñëuà jvalantaà sarvatomukham /

nåsiàham bhéñaëaà bhadraà måtyu-måtyuà namämy aham //

mantra-räjaù sura-drumaù //

One should place Lord Nåsimùa's mantra-béja, "kñrauà" on One's head, thinking : May my head be protected by the moon colored One, who is the greatest among the humans. My obeisances unto the ferocious and powerful, the great Viñëu, the fiery One, whose faces are on all sides, the fearful one, Nåsimùa, who causes the death of even death personified, or the One who overcomes even death. One should place this mantra, composed of thirty-two syllables upon his head. It is the king of all mantras. It is like a wish-fulfilling tree for the demigods and devotees.

TEXT 9 kaëtham pätu dhruvam kñrauà håd

bhagavato cäkñuña mama / narasiàhäya ca jvälä-

mäline pätu mastakam //

One should also place "kñrauà" firmly upon his neck for protection.Placing the word "bhagavate" upon his heart, "Narasiàhäya" upon his two eyes, and "jvälä-mäline" on the top of his head, one meditates upon the different parts of this Nåsiàha-mantra protecting the different parts of his body.

TEXT 10 dépta-daàñöräya ca tatha agni-neträya ca näsikäm / sarva-rakño-ghnäya sarva

bhüta-vinäçanäya ca //

One should place on his nose the syllables "dépta-daàñöräya agni-neträya sarva-rakño-ghnäya sarva bhüta-vinäçanäya". Which means: Obeisances unto Him, whose teeth are blazing, and who destroys all ghosts and räkñasas.

TEXT 11 sarva-jvara-vinäçäya

daha daha paca-dvayam / rakña rakña sarva-mantra

svähä pätu mukhaà mama //

Meditating on the protection of one's face, one should place there the syllables: "sarva-jvara-vinäçäya daha daha paca-dvayam rakña rakña / kñrauà / ugram véraà mahä-viñëuà jvalantaà sarvatomukham nåsiàham bhéñaëaà bhadraà måtyu-måtyuà namämy aham / kñrauà bhagavate narasiàhäya ca jvälä-mäline dépta-daàñöräya agni-neträya sarva-rakño-ghnäya sarva bhüta-vinäçanäya svähä" This means: Unto He, who vanquishes all fevers, obeisanses. Burn, burn, cook, cook, protect, protect. My obeisances unto the ferocious and powerful, the great Viñëu, the fiery One, whose faces are on all sides, the fearful One, Nåsiàùa,who causes the death of even death personified, or the one who overcomes even

death. Unto the Personality of Godhead Narasiàha, garlanded with blazing energy, whose teeth are glowing and whose eyes are fiery, who kills all räkñasas and demons and annihilates the ghosts, my obeisanses.

TEXT 12 tärädi rämacandräya

namaù päyäd gudam mama kléà päyät päni-yugmam ca /

täraà namaù padam tataù näräyaëäya pärçvam ca

äà hréà krauà kñrauà ca huà phaö //

Meditating on the protection of one's rectum, one should first sip water for purification and chant "oà rämäcandräya namaù". Sipping water again one should place the béja-mantra "kléà" on both of his hands together. Thereafter one should place "oà namaù" on his feet and "näräyaëäya" on his side, as well as the béja-mantras "äà hréà krauà kñrauà huà phat".

TEXT 13 varakñaraù katim pätu

oà namo bhagavate padam / väsudeväya ca påñöhaà

kléà kåñëäya uru-dvayam //

Praying for the protection of one's waist, one should place there the varakñara, "oà". One should place the syllables "oà namo bhagavate" upon his feet, "väsudeväya" on his back, and "kléà kåñëäya" upon his thighs.

TEXT 14 kléà kåñëäya sadä pätu jänuné ca manüttamaù /

kléà glauà kléà çyämaläëgäya namaù päyät pada-dvayam //

Upon his knees, one should place the mantra "kléà kåñëäya", thinking that the Lord may always protect me in His form as the best among the humans. Then one should sip water for purification and place the mantra "kléà glauà kléà çyämaläëgäya namaù" upon his feet.

TEXT 15 kñrauà narasiàhäya kñrauà ca

sarvängaà me sadävatu //

One should meditate upon the constant protection of the body, placing the mantra "kñrauà narasiàhäya kñrauà" upon all his limbs.

TEXT 16 iti te kathitam vatsa

sarva-mantraugha-vigraham / tava snehän mayäkhyätaà

pravaktavyaà na kasyacit //

Lord Brahmä continued: My dear boy, thus I have told You the embodiment of the potencies of all mantras. Because of Your great affection I have explained it to You, although it is not to be spoken to just anyone.

TEXT 17 guru-püjäà vidhäyätha

gåhëéyät kavacaà tataù / sarva-puëya-yuto bhütva

sarva-siddhi-yuto bhavet //

Having performed worship of the spiritual master, one may accept this Kavaca. Having become enriched in his pious activities, he will attain all perfections.

TEXT 18 çataà añöottaraà caiva

puraçcaryä vidhiù småtaù / havanädén daçäàçena

kåtvä sädhaka-sattamaù //

Performing the ritualistic ceremonies of purification (puraçcarya), one hundred and eight times is equal to one-tenth the benefit received by the best of devotees who chant this Kavaca mantra.

TEXT 19 tatas tu siddha-kavacaù

puëyätmä madanopamam / sparddhäm uddhüya bhavana

lakñmér väëé vaset tataù //

Lakñmé, the goddess of fortune, and Sarasvaté, the goddess of speech and learning, reside in the home of that fortunate soul who has become perfected by this Kavaca, giving up the intoxication of competing with others for supremacy.

TEXT 20 puñpäïjalyañöakaà dattvä mülenaiva paöhet sakåt / api varña-sahasräëäà

püjäyäù phalam äpnuyät //

Simply offering eight times puñpaïjali and reading only once the original version, one attains the result of even a thousand years of worship.

TEXT 21 bhürje vilikhya gutikäm

svarëästhäm dhärayed yadi / kaëöhe vä dakñiëe bähau

narasiàho bhavet svayam //

If one writes this down on a leaf or bark and keeps it within a golden capsule on his neck or right arm, Lord Nåsiàhadeva will be personally present.

TEXT 22 yoñid väma-bhüje caiva puruño dakñiëe kare /

vibhåiyät kavacaà puëyaà sarva-siddhi-yuto bhavet //

A woman may keep it on her left arm, a man on the right hand. Certainly this most auspicious Kavaca brings all perfection to the bearer.

TEXT 23 käka-vandhayä ca yä näré måta-vatsä ca yä bhavet /

janma-vandhyä nañöa-puträ bahu-putravaté bhavet //

A woman who is totally barren, or who bears only one child, or whose sons are lost or dead may become possessed of many sons.

TEXT 24 kavacasya prasädena

jivan mukta bhaven-naraù / trailokyam kñobhayasyeva trailokya vijäyi bhavet //

By the grace of this Kavaca, a man becomes jévan-mukta, liberated even in this life time. He is able to move the whole universe, and certainly becomes victorious throughout the three worlds.

TEXT 25 bhüta-preta-piçacäç ca räkñasä dänavaç ca ye / taà dåñövä prapaläyante

deçäd deçäntaraà dhruvam //

Certainly bhütas, pretas, piçäcas, räkñasas and dänavas all immediately flee from the country and go to another upon seeing it.

TEXT 26 yasmin gehe ca kavacaà gräme vä yadi tiñöhati / taà deçantu parityajya prayänti cätidürataù //

In that home or even in the same village where this Kavaca exists, all such demoniac creatures, once having understood it's presence, give up that place and go far, far away.

iti Çré-brahma-saàhitäyäà trailokya-vijayaà näma / Çré-Çré-nåsiàha-kavacaà sampürëam //

Thus ends the Nåsiàha-Kavaca, of the Trailokya-Vijaya in the saàhitä of Brahmä.

Prayers offered by Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu

çri Caitanya Mahäpabhu would regularly visit the Nåsiàha temple next to the Gundica mandir and would always take darçan of Nåsiàhadeva before seeing Lord Jagannatha. Also in Madhya-lila when the Lord's south indian tour is described is mentioned how upon visiting different temples of Nåsiàhadeva such as Jéyaòa-Nåsiàha at Siàhäcala, Ahobalam-Nåsiàha at Räkñiëätya and Pänäkal-Nåsiàha at Maìgalagiri, Çré Gauranga Mahäprabhu would dance and offer prayers in ecstasy.

The prayer offered to Jéyaòa-Nåsiàha (Madhya 8.5).

Çré nåsiàha, jaya nåsiàha, jaya jaya nåsiàha / prahlädeça jaya padmä-mukha-padma-bhåìga //

“All glories to Nåsiàhadeva! All glories to Nåsiàhadeva, who is the Lord of Prahläda Mahäräja and, like a honeybee, is always engaged in beholding the lotuslike face of the goddess of fortune.” For the prayers offered to the deity of Nåsiàhadeva by Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu present in the Jagannatha temple see Prayers by Çrédhara Swämé in section one (7.9.1.), and Nåsiàha Praëäma (section two).

Lord Rämacandra's Nåsiàha-Païcämåta

These prayers are quoted from the 47th chapter of the Harivaàsa Püräëa narrating the story of Lord Rämacandra visiting the Deity of Ahobalam Nåsiàha.

The glorious Räma once visited Ahobala where He saw the deity of Lord Nåsiàha. He offered His obeisances to Lord Kamaläpati (husband of the goddess of fortune) and prayed as follows.

TEXT 1 govinda keçava janärdana väsudeva

viçveça-viçva madhusüdana viçvarüpa / Çré padmanäbha puruñottama puñkarakña näräyaëäcyuta nåsiàho namo namaste //

O Govinda, Keçava, Janärdana, Väsudeva, Viçveça (the controller of the universe), Viçva, Madhusüdana, Viçvarüpa, Çré Padmanäbha, Puruñottama, Puñkarakña, Näräyaëa, Acyuta. O Lord Nåsiàha I offer my respectful obeisances unto You again and again.

TEXT 2 devaù samastäù khalu gopi mukhyaù gandharva vidyädhara kinnaraç ca / yat päda-mulaà satataà namanti

taà narasiàhaà çaraëaà gato'smi //

I have taken shelter of Lord Nåsiàha unto whose lotus feet demigods, prominent yogis, gandharvas, vidyädharas and kinnaras are constantly offering their obeisances.

TEXT 3 vedän samastän khalu çästragarbhän

vidyäà balaà kirtimatim ca lakñmém / yasya prasädät puruñä labhante

I have taken shelter of Lord Nåsiàha by whose mercy people receive all the vedas, the essence of all scriptures, knowledge, strength, reputation and wealth.

You are Lord Brahmä, Lord çiva and the best person Lord Näräyaëa. You are the master of the Marutas and You are the sun, the moon, air and the fire as well as the Marut-ganas. I offer my obeisances unto You.

TEXT 5 snapne'pi nitya jagatäm açesaà

srañöä ca hantä vibhura prabheyaù / trätä tvam eka strividho vibinnaù

taà tvaà nåsiàhaà satataà nato'smi //

I offer my obeisances unto Lord Nåsiàha who is the creator, the maintainer and the destroyer of the entire universe. Although You perform all of these three acts simultaneously You are completely beyond these activities. You are the all pervading, unlimited supreme spirit.

iti stutvä raghuçreñöhaù püjayämäsa taà harim /

puñpa våñöiù papätäçu tasya devasya mürdhani //

Praying this way the best of the Raghus, Lord Rämacandra worshipped Lord Hari. At that time the demigods showered a rain of flowers on the head of Lord Nåsiàhadeva.

räghaveëa kutaà stotraà pancämåta manuktamam /

paöhanti ye dvijävaräù teçäà svargastu çäçvataù //

This is the best of prayers, called pancämåta or five nectars compiled by Lord Räma Himself. One who reads this will be liberated eternally.

Çré Nåsimha Añöottara Näma Stotram

This is a stotram listing 108 names of Lord Narahari. In South India in many temples the pujaris often offer such lists of names to the deities while throwing flower petals dipped in sandal wood paste at the feet of the Lord after reciting each name.

One with five mouths. Supreme Brahman. Horrible One. Whose activities are terrible. Possessor of flaming mouth. Possessor of fiery garland. Greatly fiery. Great Master.

Whose eyes resemble sesame seeds. Thousand eyed One. Who is difficult to see. Chastiser of enemies. Possessor of great teeth. Expert in war. Who is angry at Canda (a demon, brother of Pracanda). Always auspicious.

Thousand handed one. Knower of the everything. Bestower of all mystic powers. Whose teeth are like thunderbolt. Whose nails are like thunderbolt. Greatly blissful. The highest of ascetics.

Who is born in the month of Vaiñakha in çukla pakña. The up holder of the earth planet. Affectionate to those surrendered unto Him. Whose fame is spread all over. Pure soul. Great soul. Glorified in the vedas.

jagad-vyapi jaganmayaù //

Who is worshipped by the three deities (Brahmä, Viñëu, çiva). The Supreme Personaliy of Godhead. The Supreme controller. Who is marked by the Çré Vatsa. The shelter of Çré (Lakñmé). Who pervades through the universe. Whose body is the universe.

TEXT 13 jagat pälo jagannätho mahäkyo dvirupabrit /

paramätma paraà-jyoti nirguëaç ca nå-keçari //

The protector of the universe. The Lord of the universe. Who is known as the Great One. Who has two features (man and lion). The supersoul. Supreme Effulgence. Who is devoid of material qualities. Half man half lion.

sac-cid-änanda-vigraù / lakñmé nåsiàha sarvätma dhéra prahläda-pälakaù //

Prayers by Çrédhara Swämé Çréla Çrédhära Swämé was a very advanced vaiñëava coming in the line of Viñëu Swämé's sampradäya. His commentaries on Çrémad-Bhägavatam and other scriptures were not only accepted but very much appreciated too by Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu. The principle Deity of his sampradäya is Nåsiàhadeva therefore Çrédhära Swämé composed many prayers in glorification of the Lord. In his commentary on the First Canto of Çrémad-Bhägavatam (1.1.1), Çrédhära Swämé describes Lord Nåsiàhadeva in this way:

prahläda-hådayählädaù bhaktävidyä-vidäraëam / çarad-indu-rucià vande

päréndra-vadanaà harim //

Let me offer my obeisances unto Lord Nåsiàhadeva, who is always enlightening Prahläda Mahäräja within his heart and who always kills the nescience that attacks the devotees. His mercy is distributed like moonshine, and His face is like that of a lion. Let me offer my obeisances unto Him again and again. This verse was composed by Çrédhära Swämé in his commentary on Çrémad-Bhägavatam (7.9.1).

ugro 'py anugra eväyaà sva-bhaktänäà nä-keçaré /

keçaréva sva-potänäm anyeëäà ugra-vikramaù //

Although very ferocious, the lioness is very kind to her cubs. Similarly, although very ferocious to non devotees like Hiraëyakaçipu, Lord Nåsiàhadeva is very, very soft and kind to devotees like Prahläda Mahäräja. The following verse was composed by Çrédhära Swämé in his commentary on Çrémad-Bhägavatam (10.87.1):

väg-éçä yasya vadane lakñmér yasya ca vakñasi /

yasyäste hådaye samvit taà nåsiàham ahaà bhaje //

Lord Nåsiàhadeva is always assisted by Sarasvaté, the goddess of learning, and He is always embracing to His chest the goddess of fortune. The Lord is always complete in knowledge within Himself. Let us offer obeisances unto Nåsiàhadeva. Çréla Çrédhära Swämé prays, in his commentary on the verse 10.87.31 of Çrémad-Bhägavatam .

antar-yantä sarva-lokasya gétaù çrutyä yuktyä caivam evävaseyaù /

In my heart I take shelter of Him who is glorified as the inner controller of all the worlds, and whom the Vedas ascertain in truth through logical reasoning. He is Nåsiàha, the omniscient and omnipotent Lord of the goddess of fortune.

Çré Lakñmé-Nåsiàhakaruëa-rasa-stotra

This stotra was written by Çrépäda Ädi çaìkaräcärya praying for the mercy of Çré Lakñmé-Nåsiàha Deva. This stotra is very similar in its prayerful mood to the other devotional writtings of Ädi çaìkaräcärya such as Govindäñöakam and Prabhodaçudhakära about Lord Kåñëa which reflect nothing of his impersonal teachings. çaëkaräcärya was an incarnation of Lord çiva but with the purpose of teaching the mäyäväda philosophy therefore the vaiñëava understanding is that the preaching of impersonalism was done by Mahimä a demoniac manifestation of Lord çiva. Such wonderful prayers are composed by the Sadäçiva form of çambhu.

TEXT 1 Çrémat-payo-nidhi-niketana cakra-päne

bhogindra-bhoga-maëi-räjita puëya-mürte / yogéça çäçvata çaraëya bhaväbdhi-pota

lakñmi-nåsiàha mama dehi karävalambam //

Lord, Your form is all beautiful because You are the master of the goddess of fortune. You reside in the ocean of milk, and You carry the Sudarçana disc in Your hand. Your all-auspicious form is made even more resplendent by the jewel like body of Anantadeva, the king of serpents upon whom You rest. You are the eternal deliverer from the ocean of birth and death for all those who seek Your shelter and You are the master of all mystics. TEXT 2 brahmendra rudra-marud arka-kiréöa-koöi sanghaööitangri-kamalämala-känti-känta /

Lord Brahmä, Lord Indra, Lord çiva, the Maruts and the sun-god all fall down with their tens and millions of helmets at Your lotus feet, which are most dear to the goddess of fortune, Lakñmé, who appeares as beautiful as a royal swan enjoying the lotus flower of Your chest. O

The conditioned soul suffers on the path of repeated birth and death exactly like one caught in a forest fire. Being very fearful, his body burnt by the licking flames, he cries most pitiably. Just as one tormented by a forest fire may take shelter in a pond. Your lotus feet are just like a pond giving refuge to the surrendered soul from the forest fire of saàsära. TEXT 4 saàsära-jäla-patitasya jagan-niväsa

sarvendriyärta-baòiçägra-jhañopamasya / protkampita-pracuratäluka-mastakasya

O abode of the universe, I have fallen into the net of repeated birth and death. Just like an aquatic animal, I eagerly accept the hook baited with the sense objects. And just as the fish is caught trembling, and his head is cut off, so my real consciousness is lost as I am punished by the material nature. O Lakñmé-Nåsiàha, please bless me with the touch of Your lotus hands.

TEXT 5 saàsära-küpam ati-ghoram agädha-mülaà

sampräpya duhkha-çata-sarpa-samäkulasya / dénasya deva kåpayä padam ägatasya

lakñmi-nåsiàha mama dehi karävalambam //

Having fallen into the horrible and bottomless well of repeated birth and death, I am tormented by the serpent of hundred fold miseries. In this fallen condition, O Lord, by Your mercy I am surrendered to Your lotus feet. O Lakñmé-Nåsiàha, please bless me with the touch of Your lotus hands.

TEXT 6 saàsära-bhékära-karéndra-karäbhighäta niñpéòyamäna-vapuñaù sakalärti-näça /

You slay the king of the demons, Hiraëyakaçipu, whose body is as strong as an elephant by squeezing him with Your hands. In this way You destroy all miseries by breaking the fearful cycle of birth and death. You are the ultimate goal of life for those who are disturbed by fear

I have been bitten by the tens of millions of terrible sharp fangs of the snake of material existence. Having been injected with it's powerful poison, I have lost my consciousness as the eternal servant of Kåñëa. The best remedy for snakebite is nectar, therefore O Lord çauri, You reside in the ocean of nectar and Your carrier is Garuòa the great enemy of snakes. TEXT 8 saàsära-våkña agha-béjaà ananta-karma

çäkhä-yutaà karaëa-patram anaìga-puñpaà / äruhya duhkha-phalinaà patitaà dayälo

The tree of saàsära, or material existence, is sprouted from the seed of sinful desire. The unlimited reactions to fruitive activities are it's branches, the senses are it's leaves and it's flowers is Cupid's at traction of sex desire. O merciful one, I climbed up this tree but I have only obtained the fruit of misery and am now fallen. O Lakñmé-Nåsiàha, please bless me with the touch of Your lotus hands.

TEXT 9 saàsära-sägara-viçäla-karäla-käla

nakra-graha-grasita-nigraha-vigrahasya / vyädhasya räga-nicayormiëi péòitasya

In the broad ocean of material existence I am broken and smashed again and again by the powerful waves of my accumulated attachments. Binding me with ropes, the servants of Yamaräja drag me to his abode, beating me severely along the path. Bound by material existence in hundreds of ways, I stand alone, helpless and trembling, under the influence of the superior force of daivé mäyä. In one of Your four hands You hold the Sudarçana disc and in another a conch. With another You embrace Lakñmé, who was born from the milk ocean, and with another on the left You bestow fearlessness. Although I was very wealthy, I am blind and without discrimination. I have been robbed of my great treasure (Kåñëa consciousness) by the thieves known as the senses. putravän—good children; dhanavän—wealthy; loke—in the world; dérghäyuù—long life; upajäyate—is born; kämayate—desires; yaà yam—whatever; kämam—desire; taà tam—that; präpnoty—attains; asaàçayam—without doubt. He has good children. He becomes wealthy. He lives for a long time in this world. Whatever he desires he attains. Of this there is no doubt.

bhuje—on the arm; vä—or; täla-pätre—on a plam leaf; vä—or; kavacam—kavaca; likhitam—written; çubham—auspiciousness; kara-müle—on the wrist; dhåtam—held; yena—by whom; sidhyeyuù—attains perfection; karma-siddhayaù—the perfection of activities. A person who writes this auspicious kavaca on his arm, or on a palm leaf that he then wears on his wrist, attains perfection in all that he does.

A person who daily recites this kavaca at sunrise, noon, and sunset, or at only one of those three times, becomes victorious over humans, demons, and demigods.

dva-triàçati-sahasräëi paöhet çuddhätmanäà nåëäm

sarva-maìgala-maìgalyam—the greatest of all auspiciousness; bhuktim—enjoyment; muktim—liberation; ca—and; vindati—finds; dva-triàçati-sahasräëi—32,000; paöhet—recites; çuddhätmanäm—of they who are pure in heart; nåëäm—people. A person who recites this kavaca 32,000 times attains the happiness, liberation, and supreme auspiciousness available to they who are pure in heart.

andhasya—blind; me—of me; håta—stolen; viveka—of discrimination; mahä—the great; dhanasya—wealth; coraiù—by theives; mahä-balibhiù—very powerful; indriya—the senses; nämadheyaiù—named; moha—of illusion; andhakära—in a blinding; kuhare—in the cave; vinipätitasya—fallen. çré-nåsiàhaà mahä-véraà namämi åëa-muktaye

siàha—of a lion; nädena—by a roar; mahatä—great; dig—of the directions; danti—the elephants; bhaya—fear; näçanam—destruction. To become free from debt I bow down before all-powerful Lord Nåsiàha, whose great lion-roar calms the fears of the elephants who guard the directions.

To become free from debt I bow down before all-powerful Lord Nåsiàha, who is the master of yajïas, Vedas, and Vedänta. Brahmä, Çiva, and all the demigods bow down before Him.

ya idaà pathate nityam åëa-mocana-samjïitam

anåëé jäyate sadyo dhanaà çéghram aväpnuyät

yaù—who; idam—this; pathate—recites; nityam—regularly; åëa—from debt; mocana—freedom; samjïitam—named; anåëé—free from debt; jäyate—becomes; sadyaù—at once; dhanam—wealth; çéghram—quickly; aväpnuyät—attains. This prayer is called Åëa-mocana (Prayer to Lord Nåsiàha for Release From Worldly Debts). One who regularly reads this prayer is at once freed from debt. Quickly he becomes wealthy.
