2013 - A Year of Change! Part of the celebration for each New Year is to make resolu- tions. Popular resolu- tions include eating less junk food, quitting smok- ing, and exercising more. I decided to no longer to make such gestures because by Super Bowl Sunday I am back to eating Dori- tos. Resolutions are about making changes, and changes seem to happen each year any- way so there is no fight- ing it. It's time to em- brace it. Some people say they like change, but I think most people don't. Change is scary. It forces you to get out of your comfort zone and do a little work or think a little different than you are used to. Change is hard, but change can lead to bet- ter things. Sometimes it takes a little while to see the benefits. Many of us have experi- enced budget reductions at work. Some of us continue to experience such cuts. It usually means you have fewer resources than you would like. I tell people in Henderson that it was much more fun when we had more money and could do more. Well, those days are gone and will not be making a re- turn. Budget reductions have forced us to think and operate differently, which is not always a bad thing. Parks and Recreation professionals are known for being creative, and this is our time to shine. You may have pre- sented an idea or a new concept in the past and heard a "no, we can't do that." If you really be- lieve in this project, then maybe it is time to bring it up again. Perhaps the circumstances that made others pass on your idea no longer ex- ist. Maybe you just need to tweak your idea and take it for another spin. The rules have changed folks. It is time for us to change as well. In the end, we'll all probably be better because of it. Dear Recreation and Parks Colleagues,

“Ignite Our Future “is the theme for the 2013 Nevada Recreation and Parks (NRPS) Conference. The conference

will be hosted by the Incline Village Parks & Recreation Department in Incline Village, Nevada (Lake Tahoe) on September 17-20. The aspirations of the NRPS Conference Committee and Board of Directors are to host a memorable and ex-hilarating educational event that will attract inspiring speakers, progressive commercial exhibitors and commit-ted, brilliant attendees from Nevada and all NRPA affiliates. It is our intention that the conference will represent the mission and vision of NRPS & NRPA, by selecting pre-senters who philosophically and practically embrace the advancement of parks, recreation and environmental conservations efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people. As well as the value these entities in their role to:

“Enhance community vitality, livability and sustainability; support human development; improve health and wellness; provide quality parks and recreation experiences; garner legislative and finan-cial support; foster environmental stewardship and appreciation of nature; raise awareness of the value of structured and unstructured play; ensure safe, affordable and accessible park and rec-reation opportunities; and position parks, recreation and environmental conservation as essential to every citizen.”

The Conference Committee has secured the lakeside Cal-Neva Lodge as the host hotel, Diamond Peak Ski Re-sort for the tradeshow and welcoming reception, and the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center and the IVGID Parks Building for the classrooms. Currently the committee is seeking, inviting and confirming speakers, presenters & educators. If you or some-one you know would like to present an exceptional session , please contact Pandora Bahlman at [email protected] or (775)832-1350. The preliminary presenter program will be published in February on NRPS.org, so that attendees can make an early, informed reservation. Exhibitor applications will be emailed the last week of January. If want to reserve a booth at the tradeshow, or need more information about the September NRPS Conference Tradeshow, please contact Misty Moga at [email protected] or (775)832-1381, Shane Goddard at [email protected] or Shelly Gulotta at [email protected].

Early Bird discount registration fees and hotel room rates will be available to all NRPS & NRPA members March through June. There will also be a group discount for agencies that send five or more representatives. The conference fee includes conference presenters, keynote speaker, tradeshow, welcome and award reception. Additional conference events will include: two continuing educations courses (Alternative Funding and Trail Building) on Tuesday and Disc Golf and/or Golf outings Friday afternoon. “Ignite Your Future” with NRPS this year in Lake Tahoe! See you in September, Pandora Bahlman, NRPS President Elect
