About The NROTC Scholarship
Naval Reserve Officer TrainingCorps
The Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) is a comprehensive scholarshipprogram. It gives you the money you need to cover up to five years of full tuition, fees, and stipends for books - even monthly allowances.
An NROTC Scholarship covers the following:.:. Full tuition.:. All college and university educational fees.:. Stipend for textbooks.:. Subsistence allowance each month.:. Other related educational expenses.:. Uniforms
Subsistence Allowance each month(As of October 1,2009)
Freshman $250Sophomore $300Junior $350Senior $400
After graduation, while other students are feverishly searching for a job, you'll walk rightinto a challenging and exciting adventure as a Naval Officer. Starting pay for a newlycommissioned officer 0-1 is about 64,000 a year depending on duty location.
As an NROTC student, you'll receive training in physics and calculus, navigation, navalship and weapons systems, sea power and amphibious warfare. You'll also gainexperience in leadership and management. Whether you choose corporate America orstay in the Navy for your entire career, the NROTC Program can get you closer to yourgoals.
NROTC Scholarship selectees are appointed midshipmen, U.S. Naval Reserve, by theSecretary of the Navy and are granted compensation and benefits authorized by law for
four years of undergraduate study. Under certain conditions, midshipmen may becomeeligible for up to one additional year of scholarship compensation and benefits.
The subsistence allowance a midshipman receives while in college is usually notsufficient to pay all college expenses. Experience shows that an additional $2,000 to$4,000 per year (depending on the college) is typically needed to cover expenses such asroom and board. Because most colleges advise first-year students not to take outsideemployment, applicants should apply to colleges where expenses will be within theirbudgets.
Students selected for the NROTC Program make their own arrangements forcollege enrollment, room and board, and take the normal course load required by thecollege or university for degree completion. NROTC midshipmen live basically the samecampus lives as other undergraduates. However, during weekly drill instruction, summertraining periods and in specified Naval Science classes, midshipmen must wear uniformsonce or twice a week, furnished by the government, and conduct them selves in a militarymanner.
The military commander of an NROTC unit is a senior Navy or Marine Corps Officer. As professors of Naval Science, they are also members of college faculties.
In addition to teaching the Naval Science curriculum and conducting other navalfunctions, Professors of Naval Science and the Officers of their staffs serve as counselorsto midshipmen on personal, academic, and career matters.
