Innovations for Environmental Monitoring

Environmental protection in industry – as well as in general – is hardly possible without reliable measuring values.

Whether we want to avoid health hazards, optimize industrial processes, or comply with new statutory requirements: Precise monitoring of ambient condi-tions is now a more important task for sensing, mea-suring, and testing technology than ever before.

Due to this plethora of requirements „Environmen-tal Monitoring” was scheduled as special topic for the SENSOR+TEST 2015. Exhibitors will present their latest developments on the special forum, on their booths and in lectures.

A small choice of news has been collected in this flyer for your preliminary information. We hope that it will inspire you to visualize the exhibitors compe-tence at the SENSOR+TEST 2015.

We look forward to your visit!

The biggest part of en- ergy consumption is caused by heating of poorly insu-lated buildings. In order to optimize the insulation and therefore the heating of buildings, the quality of the insulation has to be assessed. There are seve-

ral methods for doing this, but only the U-value (or U-factor) measurement with heat flux sensors delivers reliable quantitative data and a precise assessment of the quality of a

building’s insulation. Especially when reno-vating older buildings, a solid understanding of the U-value helps to plan needed insula-tion measures and the right dimensions of a heating system. The U-Value KIT consists of a highly sensitive heat flux sensor, two tempera-ture sensors and a data logger. The basic m a t e r i a l of pyro-e l e c t r i c detectors with the

highest performance level is DLaTGS, deute-rated and L-alanine-doped triglycine sulfate. The detectivity D* of DLaTGS is typically 2.5 to 5 times higher than in LiTaO3 detectors, even at high frequencies. Furthermore, they have a wide spectral sensitivity range from UV to THz wavelengths that is only limited by the detector window used. The Curie tempera-

ture of DLaTGS is 61°C and thus more than 10°C higher than TGS (triglycine sulfate). This is achieved by the process of deuteration, the complete replacement of all hydrogen atoms by deuterium atoms. Additional doping with L-alanine increases the sensitivity of detectors and permanently locks in the polarization such that the crystal will self polarize once it is again below the Curie temp.LASER COMPONENTS GmbH, Stand 12-117

Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, with a Global War-ming Potential of more than 22,000 times than that of CO2. Over the past decades, manufacturers have replaced oil high-voltage switch gears with SF6-insulated units. Today, the power utility industry uses roughly 80% of all SF6 produced worldwide. The system measures the total concentration of the SF6 gas in an enclosed area of a GIS Substa- tion to determine the leak rate. By accu- rately measuring leak rate, utilities can

improve quality whi-le decreasing risks, costs and emissions. The Lumasense SF6 Leak Detector 3434i offers a perfect combination of performance, comfort and safety. LumaSense Technologies GmbH, Stand 11-120

For several years now our innova-tive temperature sensors have found their way into countless applica-tions. It is now time to introduce a suc-cessor to the popu-

lar SMT160-30 range. At the SENSOR+TEST we will introduce this new sensor, the SMT-172 series. Just as our successful UTI device was, we believe this new sensor is a revolution in sensor technology. Implementing smart de-

sign, this sensor has an accuracy of better than 0.1 C, supply voltage of 2.7V to 5.5V and can be battery operated due to its very low power consumption of typically only 60uA (active). In simple terms: “the power needed to accurate-ly convert a temperature to an electric output using the new Smartec temperature sensor is lowest in the world”. This lends itself to new applications in the “Internet of Things” such as wearable electronics, body temperature and environment monitoring. Smartec B.V., Stand 12-352
