for requesting our new catalog. A lot has changed since our last catalog went to print

in the winter of 2003. The XL model line is all new with available Buell top-end and

rubber mounting, Buell returned to stock 1203cc displacements with the XB12 line, and the

performance aftermarket has continued to innovate at a breakneck pace.

Inside you'll find the very best performance products developed in these last two years,as well as many that have stood the test of time since NRHS opened its doors back in 1998.As the American V-Twin community has grown, so too has NRHS. We've continually addedand adapted our product line and machine services to help insure that you, our valued cus-tomers, not only have the quickest bike around, but that you built it right the first time, andgot it at a fair price.

CNC PORTINGSuperior Performance Bred From Razor’s-Edge PrecisionWhoever said lightning can't strike in the same place twice must not have seen our CNC-port-

ed cylinder heads. Our Fadal 4020 4-Axis Vertical Machining Center cuts every port to within1/10,000th of an inch of tolerance every time we press go and set it loose on yet another luckystiff’s heads.

So what, right? How does that make for a better set of heads for your bike? Simply put, greatheads come from great science, and once you've got a handle on that science the trick is figur-

ing out how to replicate it. Hand porting is an art to be sure, and we still put the old Dremel tool to good use on special app lication and one-off race heads, but for the number of street performance heads we see, consistency and repeatability became our number one goal s. CNCporting allows us to reproduce our best port designs perfectly, over and over, every time. No eye-balling it, no giving it the old “good enough.”Not now, not ever.

CNC-FLEX - When second best isn't good enough, accept no substitutesSo standard CNC porting is ultra-precise and completely efficient, and for most shops that would have been enough, but the first question weasked was, “how can we make it better?” While consistency is one of the main strengths of CNC porting, it's also the main weakness, becauseit doesn't lend itself well to adaptation. Unless the set of heads being ported is going into the exact set-up as the CNC model heads were devel-oped for, the porting will be good, but still less than a perfect fit. It would be like trying to fit a dozen people into the same pair of shoes. For some

they'd be too small, for others too big and only for a very few would they be a proper fit. This is due largely tothe fact that an engine's airflow requirements vary greatly with its bore, stroke, and rpm, and changing any ofthese parameters causes a change in port velocity unless you also change the heads to match. Port velocity iscompletely critical to where, when and how much poweryour engine has the potential to make.

Solving this problem was a challenge of mountainousproportions, and took some innovative engineering,resulting in the NRHS exclusive process that we callCNC-FLEX.

Standard on all Stage III cylinder heads, CNC-FLEX isan advanced program that mathematically alters keydimensions of the CNC port profile to custom tailor theprofile to your specific application. The operator enters

the engine bore & stroke, rpm of the torque peak, cam timing specs, and the valve sizes.CNC-FLEX uses this information in conjunction with the digitized port data to calculatethe ideal port size, and then generates a custom porting program.

The result of all this technology is a combination of the quality and performance offeredby CNC porting with the custom capability of hand porting. The best of both worlds, andNRHS is the only shop on the planet with anything like it.

The NRHS Stage 1 CNC-ported cylinder head is for the performance enthusiast who wants a notice-

able increase in horsepower and torque without having to take a second mortgage on the house to

get it. The first step is to thoroughly inspect and clean the heads to ensure that there are no cracks

or flaws. If the heads have been previously run, all valve spring pressures are checked through the full

range of motion and are replaced if necessary. All valves are then inspected for straightness and then

re-faced to optimize flow around the valve head area. The intake and exhaust ports are then reshaped,

removing only the absolutely necessary amount of material, to optimize flow and velocity for the ulti-

mate in torque and horsepower. All porting is done utilizing our Fadal 4020 4-axis Vertical Machining

Center, and every set of heads is verified perfect on

our state-of-the-art Superflow bench equipped with

Flocom microprocessor, intake and exhaust airspeed

diagnostic probes, and Winflow graphics software.

The valve job consists of a proprietary profile specific

to NRHS, optimized for both flow and heat dissipa-

tion. The combustion chambers are blended into the

seats in such a way as to promote both laminar transi-

tion around the valve seat and maximum turbulence

and swirl characteristics within the chamber. The head

surface area is flat-milled to ensure an absolutely flat

gasket surface and to correct for the small amount of

material removed during the blending process. The heads are then

re-cleaned and assembled with all valve spring installed heights

within .005 in. of one another, keeping valve train harmonics to a

minimum. Finally, the heads go back on the flow bench one last

time to ensure that the front and rear-head flow numbers are with-

in 1.5%-2% of each other to ensure proper cylinder balance and ease

of tuning. Careful, detailed records are kept on every set of heads.

Note: because they utilize stock valvetrain hardware, Stage 1 heads are best suited to “bolt-in” type cams.

Cylinder Heads

The NRHS Stage 2 CNC-ported cylinder head is subject to much of the same treatment as Stage 1

head, except that these get heads get fitted with premium quality Hurricane stainless steel over-

size valves, high lift chrome silicone springs, bronze manganese guides, titanium retainers, and

competition proven 10 degree valve locks. This makes the Stage 2 head an excellent match for larger

cams, opening the door to the next performance level. These heads are by far the most popular choice

because of their versatility to be utilized in both mild and wild combinations. This allows the cus-

tomer to install the heads, observe superb gains in the short term, and then build upon them without

having to re-port the heads and incur additional expense. All of the careful documentation that goes

into a Stage 1 head with regard to assembly and overall airflow balance also applies to a Stage 2 head.

NRHS is proud to announce our latest stage of headwork. We call it STAGE 2 LIGHT. You still get the same

CNC porting that our regular stage 2 kits come with plus our oversized stainless Hurricane 7mm valves. But

we have found that when using cams with lifts of .550 or less that the new beehive spring kits from HD work

excellent. By using these springs you not only save money, but also eliminate the need for rocker box clear-

ancing and put less strain on the valvetrain components. The perfect choice for cams under .550 lift. Available

for XB, 04 1200 and Thunderstorm head (and now Twin Cam and Evo Big Twin).

We start by truing the deck in the CNC machine.Experience has shown it typically takes about .005" ofmaterial removal to get the deck perfectly flat for a goodhead gasket seal. During assembly, all new parts areused, and premium quality Hurricane stainless steelvalves are installed (1.810 intake, 1.580" exhaust, 7mmstems). Stem protrusion is checked and adjusted as need-ed. Valve springs are fully tested for correct seat pressureand travel, and valve spring installed height is set. Valve-to-valve clearance is checked and we will advise if addi-tional work is needed to correct (this is primarily a func-tion of the cams you choose; cams with a lot of overlapmay require clearancing work). Exhaust studs areinstalled. We can optionally shim the springs for addi-tional seat pressure if needed for your cams*. All of thatis done at no extra charge! For only a little bit more, withXB heads, we'll drill and tap the breather holes if needed

(04 XL heads already have these holes drilled andtapped). We can also cut the combustion chambers for anangled squish band and/or to achieve a desired com-pression ratio. And of course, if you'd like everythingyou can get out of these heads, we can fully port and flowthem as well as fit ultra-high performance Hurricane val-vetrain components. We've made as much as 125rwhp at1250cc with Stage 3 ported XB heads, totally streetable!

* - Be careful about how aggressive of a cam lobe andhow much spring pressure you put to OEM valveswith 7mm stems. A big part of H-D's ability to get7500rpm safely from these light duty components inthe XB9 is the gentle profile of the stock XB cam lobes.We recommend converting to heavy duty Hurricanesprings and Hurricane valves with 5/16" stems whenusing aggressive cam lobes.

Professional Assembly Makes the Difference!

New OEM XL1200R and XB Heads arenow available assembled from NRHS!

The new XB and 2004 XL1200R cylinder heads represent a major step forward in port design from previ-ous OEM cylinder heads. When comparing stock to stock, our testing has shown these heads to be capa-ble of 5-6 more horsepower than typical Thunderstorm heads! Complementing the much improved ports

is a set of special lightweight large-diameter valves, single beehive style springs with extra travel, ultra-light-weight retainers & keepers, and an improved valve stem seal design. As a result of these improvements, thenew XB/04XL heads are quickly becoming the OEM performance head of choice for XL's and Buells.

NRHS takes the hassle and expense out of using these new heads!Until now, these heads were only available unassembled. NRHS nowoffers these heads professionally assembled with premium Hurricanevalves and the deck trued for the same price as all of the individualstock components would cost you at your dealer! We'll also drill andtap the breather holes for no extra charge if desired. Other optionsinclude chamber work to accommodate angle dome pistons at yourdesired compression ratio, heavy duty valve train components, blackpowder coating, and Stage 1, 2, or 3 porting services. We also offerpushrods and pushrod cover kits as well as a Buell front engine mountto simplify the installation.

More DetailsThese heads feature 1.810" intake and 1.580" exhaust valves, the same size asThunderstorm, but with 7mm stems for additional weight savings. A single beehive stylevalve spring controls each valve, further reducing weight at the critical top end of thespring which sees the most movement. The springs measure about 135lbs at 1.850"installed height when new. A new improved valve guide seal design is used as well. There is plenty of retainer-to-guide seal clear-ance and coil bind clearance to allow up to .550" of valve lift, a full .050" more than the earlier heads, opening up the possibility ofusing higher lift cams*. The heads use a bathtub style 62cc chamber with flat squish bands. At stock 1200 bore and stroke, this cham-ber provides approximately a 10:1 compression ratio with flat tops. The XB and 2004 XL1200R heads are identical in every wayexcept the finish and the breather holes, which are already drilled and tapped on the 1200R heads but not on the XB heads (the XBheads already have the boss, however).

Cylinder Heads

Stock XL rocker boxes bolt right up and the stock XL pushrod tubeswork fine. Your stock pushrods may or may not work, becausethese heads are about .025" shorter than an XL or Thunderstormhead. By itself, this is generally not enough to necessitate custompushrods. However, if you are shortening the stack further withadditional milling to raise compression, milling of your cylinders,

and/or thinner than stock gaskets, pushrod length may become a concern. Thebest way to determine if pushrod length is an issue is to measure the amountof lifter plunger preload you're getting, ideally the plunger should be centeredin it's travel when the valves are closed (stock lifters have .200" of travel). Werecommend correcting the pushrod length if the plunger is more than .050"away from centered. Pushrod length can be corrected by using Hurricanepushrods, which are available in either fully adjustable or fixed length ver-sions. When using adjustable pushrods, we highly recommend a set of col-lapsible pushrod covers to facilitate adjustment.

Note that the right (pushrod side) front mounting hole on these heads ismoved inward 1/4" from previous Evolution XL heads. Modification of yourengine mount may be required. For owners of Buell tube frame models, weoffer a billet aluminum mount with the hole correctly located for these heads.Designed to be extra-strong, this mount is CNC machined from a solid chunkof 6061T6 aluminum. Extra material is placed in all stressed areas and all cor-ners are radiused to eliminate stress risers. If you've already fitted XB headsand you'd like to swap out your modified mount for this unit, it's a 15 minutejob because unlike competing products, the bolt can be inserted from the bot-tom. This is a super high-quality piece that will complement your Buell nicely.

STD Street Performance Heads for Twin Cam and EvolutionWhen you’re in need of more than an OEM headcan provide, it's time to step up to a set of STDheads! These are super high quality headsmade from premium material, designed to with-

stand the rigors of your hot-rod street project or highcompression, high rpm competition applications.

Configuration of the chamber to your piston dome anddesired compression ratio is included with these heads atno extra charge. Note that some combinations of pistondomes and compression ratio may require excess deckmilling which compromises valve to piston clearance aswell as manifold fit and may also necessitate shorter oradjustable pushrods. Please call if you’re unsure.

STD Heads for Big-Bore and Racing Applications

When going to a big-bore, ideally you want a head made for thelarger bore size, otherwise you’ll never get everything out of themotor that it’s capable of delivering. NRHS can provide STD headswith the chamber enlarged and with the valve angles altered suchthat larger valves can be used to take advantage of the biggerbore. Other options available include raised ports, oval intakeports, dual carbs, and external head drains. Properly configured,these heads will take your horsepower and torque to a new levelthat’s simply not feasible with OEM heads. We’ve done many raceand street engines with these heads and the results are trulyimpressive.

This level of head is custom configured to your application specif-ically. Please call and speak with directly with a performance con-sultant, we are happy to help you make your project a success.

Precision Boring and Honing of Your Stock 883 CylindersSave money and get the best possible ring seal and engine life by having your stock 883 cylinders preci-sion bored and honed by NRHS. We bore your cylinders using a state-of-the-art CNC machine that notonly bores them straight, but it squares the bore up to the case deck surface and precisely centers the boreto specifications. A special double cutter boring head is used to eliminatedeflection induced distortions common with typical boring machines, andcoolant is directed into the bore during the operation to ensure thermal sta-bility for the straightest bore possible. Torque plates are used of course. Wehave found this boring equipment and procedure to produce the highestquality bore job possible.

Once bored, your cylinders are then precision honed, again with torqueplates attached. During this procedure your pistons are custom fitted to thecylinders, providing a precise cylinder wall clearance that minimizes noiseand enhances both ring seal and longevity. This level of precision is simplynot achievable by slapping pistons into off-the-shelf cylinders.

With the number and variety of camshafts available these days, picking the right one can seem likea game of Russian Roulette. Pick a stick that has too much duration and overlap for your motorand you’ll kill your bottom end torque production, or conversely pick one with too little and you'll

have a bike that pulls great out of the hole, but falls on its face when you get out to pass that truck.Successful camshaft selection requires an understanding of the interactions between the intake system, theflow characteristics of the heads, the bore and stroke of the engine, the compression ratio, and the exhaustsystem, all pulled together in a package that best suits the type of bike you ride, and most importantly yourriding style. Hurricane Chrome Moly Fixed LengthPushrods Adjustable pushrods are great but often times youjust don’t want the extra hassle and expense of collapsible tubes andspecial tools needed to install them. But up until now you really had nochoice because if you had your cylinder heads decked or converted tothe new XB heads you needed to get adjustable pushrods to compen-sate for the reduced height. Well NRHS has solved the problem for you. Our Hurricane fixed length pushrods are constructed of ultra stiff3/8” 4140 chrome moly tubing to prevent flexing. Plus we have already taken the guess work out by having the pushrods made in sizes tohandle most engine configurations. Custom sizes are also available if needed.

We looked at all the features we wanted in a pushrod and incor-porated them into this product. We started with high strength heat treated seamless 4140 chrome moly tubing, for outstanding rigidity under

even the most demanding conditions. “Mae West” ends accommodate high lift cams without concern for the endcoming out of the rocker arm seat. 5/16” adjuster nuts are stronger than an adjuster screw with wrench flats ascommonly used on other products. The tube itself has an integrated nut at the bottom to make adjustment easy.Twin Cam and Evo Big Twin sets include different lengths for intake and exhaust to maximize the amount ofthread engagement and make the assembly stronger.Available in ultra stiff .065 straight 3/8” wall design, ora tapered design for the ultimate strength to weightratio without the rub problems common with 7/16”pushrods. There is no finer pushrod made! Note thatthe same features that make these pushrods so strong also preclude making them fast-install style, rocker boxremoval is required for installation. Tappets & AccessoriesDon't take chances with your valvetrain, use a high quality tappet from NRHS! We have used JIMS Powerglide and Hydrosolid tappets extensively and they are a premium quality, reliable piece. A high performance tappet anti-rotation pin set should be used in 1995-1999 Sportster and Buell engines, as the stock tappet pins are supported on only one side and are prone to failure in high performance applica-

tions. Special premium quality Twin Cam tappet blocks manufactured by Millennium Technologies are

offered for the extra c l e a r a n c e required for 4.25” bore cylinders.

S&S Rocker ArmsHigh lift cams and high pressure springs need the extra strength and reduced friction offered by quality roller tip rocker arms. Roller tip rockers significantly reduce valve side loading which extends valve and guide life. S&S rockers are the best units we've found. Made from super strong heat treated & shot peened 4140 forgings, they feature 3/4” long shaft bushings for more support, a

modified lubri-cation system that provides unrestricted roller oiling, and an arm shape that offers more rocker cover clearance than competing products. As with all aftermarket rockers, adjustable pushrods are required. Note that high ratio rocker arms generally require corrections to valvetrain geometry, these are for professional engine builders only. Stock rocker ratio is 1.625.

Crank ScraperImagine sprinting down the beach as hard as you possibly can, now imagine moving out into the knee-deep water and trying to maintain the same pace - completely impossible right? This is basically what it's like for the crank in your engine without the instal-lation of a crank scraper/windage tray. These simple devices ride along .010” off the surface of the flywheel, sheering excess oil off the flywheels before it gets the chance to rob power from your engine. The results are simple - less parasitic power loss, a freer spinning bottom end, and more horsepower at the rear wheel. Kit comes with all necessary hardware for “bolt-in” installation. Cometic EST GasketsNRHS carries Cometic EST gaskets exclusively. We have used many differentavailable gaskets and we've found these to be the best by far. EST head, base,and rocker gaskets are constructed of an embossed stainless steel metal sub-strate coated with a proprietary hi temperature rubber material that virtually elim-inates leakage when joining two metal surfaces. Head gaskets are a multi-layerdesign, require no dowel pin o-rings, and are available in .030” and .040” thick-nesses. When Harley-Davidson redesigned the venerable Sportster line for the 2004 model year they madea number of fantastic changes, including rubber mounting and the addition of higher performanceengine components such as XB Buell style heads on the 2004-up XL 1200's. Unfortunately, thepotential of these engines has gone unrealized for many riders who opted for the factory's under-sized, restrictive paper “performance” air cleaner kit, until now. Our Hurricane Flow Air Filters comein sizes double and triple the surface area of the stock set up coupled with the freer flowing mediaprovided by the K&N filter elements to create a zero restriction environment for your engine to oper-ate at its maximum potential. Look at our 2” centered version for the ultimate sleeper look on stockand mild built street motors, and for big bore motors capable of 100 horsepower plus be sure to optfor our monster 3” forward offset version (pictured) .

Please Note: Because of the adverse carbon build up and loss of horsepower resulting fromrouting the head breathers back into the intake tract, we’ve designed the Hurricane Flow withno provision to route the head breather assembly back into it. Thus the separate purchase ofa head breather kit, including banjo bolts and fittings is required to properly complete installa-tion of the Hurricane Flow. NRHS offers several different inexpensive breather kit options, seepage 2 for more details. Sportster owners also note that the purchase of a carb support brack-et may be necessary to complete installation as well. Dyna Ignition ModulesDyna 2000 units feature 4 selectable curves and a choice of 4 rev limits: 6000, 6500, 7000,7500rpm. The VOES input can be converted to a nitrous retard input, allowing you to take out5, 7, or 10 degrees of spark advance depending on the curve selected. Dyna 2000 units plug

right into the stockfactory harness (7 or8-pin) and work finewith the factory pickupunit. Single fire ver-sions include a tachoutput so no tachadapter is necessary.

Ignition

Dyna Nose Cone Ignition ModulesThe Dyna 2000i Programmable units are nose cone modules that are packed with features. It will support single ordual fire operation with single or dual plug heads when used with the appropriate coil. Dual pickups are incorporatedinto the module to allow single fire operation down to zero rpm. An independent tach output is provided; no tach adapteris needed. The VOES input can be used as a nitrous retard input with adjustable control of the timing advance removed.An indicator LED is provided to show the state of the VOES/nitrous retard input. Active dwell control allows full coilcharging at red line without overcharging at idle. Intelligent over current/short circuit protection and over voltage/surge

protection make for a rugged, reliable module. Designed forcoil primary resistance of 2.5 to 3.5 ohms.

The 2000i has a dip switch to select from 10 curves and 4 revlimits: 6000, 6500, 7000, 7500rpm. The 2000i can also be pro-grammed entirely from your PC. This allows tremendously

more functions and flexibility. For example, the 2000i Programmable has fully definable 8 point curves for both wide open and part throttle operation, pro-grammable rev limit in 50rpm steps, programmable rear cylinder offset, plus it can record various parameters such as total engine hours, time at wide openthrottle, number of engine starts, longest time operating at wide open throttle, maximum rpm, and number of seconds near rev limit. It truly represents anadvancement in state-of-the-art for ignition modules.

Spark PlugsWe carry Denso Iridium spark plugs exclusively because we have found them to be the BEST spark plugmade. Iridium is six times harder than platinum and withstands temperatures in excess of 4000 degrees.The electrodes on these plugs are only .4mm which means the plugs will fire even in extreme cylinder pres-sure conditions and with less voltage.

Dyna Twin Cam Ignition ModuleFor the Twin Cam, we offer the Dyna 2000TC single fire ignition module. It is designed to workwith the stock coil, or any other coil with less than 1 ohm of primary resistance. It offers yourchoice of 16 advance curves in 3 separate groups, for engines ranging from mild to wild. Eightrev limiter settings in 250 rpm increments from 5750 to 7250 rpm are also provided. Works withstock sensors and connectors.

Dyna Coilsfire/single plug coil is the compact and powerful Dyna DC6-5. The DC6-5 is two completely independent coils in one package, and yet it’s only slightly biggerthan the stock coil and therefore will generally fit in the stock location and under the stock cover without any problem. Primary resistance is 3 ohms. For sin-

gle fire dual plug applications, use the Twinfire DC6-4 coil with 4 output towers(substantially larger than a stock coil, custom mounting required). For dual fireapplications, we recommend the Dyna DC6-1 to replace your stock Harley coil.
