    Molly Russell Rides TF Cats Lilypad to Snaffle Bit Futurity Amateur

    Championship ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Molly Russell, Futurity Amateur Champion

    It has been six years since Molly Russell showed a 3-year-old at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity, and her return to Futurity competition yielded thrilling results today. She piloted her gelding, TF Cats Lilypad (Cats Merada x RM Lily Langtree), to the Amateur Championship and also made the finals in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro divisions. The Futurity Amateur is decided by the scores in the preliminary go-round, which concluded today for Non Pro competitors. "It's been overwhelming! Lots of fun and overwhelming. It's exciting to have a great horse, some good luck and good support," Russell said. "In the herd work, he was very soft and really cowy. We had a good work on our first cow. The second cow was tougher and I had a miss, but he was honest and he was even. In the rein work, he felt like he was floating. He was a good boy. In today's fence work, he felt like he was ready to play the game. The cow came out, we boxed, and we were in the right position and just got down the fence." The Creston, Calif., horsewoman scored a 207 in the herd work, a 214 in the rein work and 215 in the cow work. Her total 636 composite score came with a check for $4,784, a Bob's Custom Saddle sponsored by Larry and Ellen Bell, a Gist buckle from Rancho Valiente/Missy Capone, a C.R. Morrison Trophy from NRCHA, a fleece cooler from Classic Equine, a monogrammed Cinch jacket from Bob's Custom Saddles/New West Country Store, Platinum Performance sponsored by Doug Herthel, a C.R. Morrison Commemorative Medallion from NRCHA and

  • a set of Les Vogt "Cowhorse U" training videos from Les Vogt. Russell discovered her passion for cow horses shortly after she graduated college. She bought TF Cats Lilypad, nicknamed "Peso," from Buellton, Calif., trainer Tina Fry in January. She finished his training herself with help from her coach of 15 years, Paso Robles, Calif., professional Mark Luis. "He's the best coach - especially down the fence," Russell said. She and Luis had a strategy in place before she entered the arena for today's cow work. "These cattle are good, but if you're a little behind, or late, or make a mistake, they're not very forgiving," Luis said. "I told her to be in position, go get a turn, another turn, and circle - as simple as possible. We went with the black-and-white theory and it worked. She did a great job." Russell, the daughter-in-law of NRCHA Cattle Manager Pat Russell, plans to continue showing TF Cats Lilypad in next year's derbies. The Futurity Amateur Reserve Champion was Garth Gardiner, Ashland, Kans., riding Wisha Pona Star (Soula Jule Star x Tesigner Jeans x Tesigned). Gardiner piloted the mare to a total score of 624.5, earning $3,744 and taking home a Gist buckle sponsored by Rocking J Ranch, in memory of Barbara Hastings, a Cinch jacket from Bob's Custom Saddles/New West Country Store, Platinum Performance sponsored by Doug Herthel, a C.R. Morrison Medallion from NRCHA, and "Cow Horse U" training videos from Les Vogt. Gardiner also secured a spot in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro finals. LaDona Emmons Wins Non Pro Limited and $5,000 Non Pro Limited Championships on Anuther Mister 505

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • LaDona Emmons and Anuther Mister 505
    Everything went right for LaDona Emmons and Anuther Mister 505 (Mister Dual Pep x Anuther Olena) in the Non Pro Limited and $5,000 Non Pro Limited class at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, Nev., as they captured dual championships with an untouchable 297 composite score - 147 in the rein work and 150 in the cow work. It was the second time for Emmons, Ione, Calif., to win both big classes at a major NRCHA event. She pulled off a decisive win in the same divisions at the NRCHA Derby in Paso Robles, Calif., in June. "He was good everywhere. I know him a little better now, and I felt like I 'had' him - maybe even more so than at the Derby. I ran my circles faster here," she said. After the rein work, Emmons was pleased to see the exact cow she wanted. "I was hoping for a black one. Everybody told me the cattle had been good, but some had been really quiet. I saw a black cow earlier in the day and he wasn't that quiet, so I was excited I drew a black one. It wasn't an overly tough cow but it moved, and let my horse show what he can do, and that was what I wanted." It was an emotional win for Emmons. She dedicated the ride to her friend, Cindy Granade, who passed away several years ago. Cindy's husband, Doug, is a dedicated NRCHA sponsor and cow horse competitor, and honors his wife in all of those activities. "She was really special to me," Emmons said, through tears. "That's why it means a lot to win this, for her." Emmons also thanked her parents, her husband, leading NRCHA Professional Ron Emmons, and her close-knit circle of friends in the barn. Her Non Pro Limited Championship check totaled $1,148, and Emmons took home another $1,106 for winning the $5,000 Non Pro Limited. Her prizes included two Bob's Custom Saddles sponsored by Matacorp and the Santa Ynez Cow Horse Classic; two C.R. Morrison Trophies from NRCHA; a pair of Gist buckles from Boyd Rice and Ramona Koch Training Stables; Platinum Performance; and two Cinch monogrammed jackets from Bob's Custom Saddles and New West Country Store. The Reserve Champion in the $5,000 Non Pro Limited was a tie between Kelsey Romney, riding Halo Cat (WR This Cats Smart x Stylin Jewel), owned by Deirdre Hill, and Alyson Rodges, riding her Repeat Plan (A Master Plan x Lenas Solana). Both earned a 293.5 composite score and took home a check for $800. In the Non Pro Limited, four riders deadlocked for the Reserve Championship with a 293.5. Karin Richards, riding No Chic Flicks (Chic Please x Pandalita Star), Paula Merrell, aboard Nu Circle Of Light (Nu Circle N Cash x Katie Starlight), Jamie Foster on Fletch Me If You Can (Royal Fletch x Sug Sug Could) and Alyson Rodges on Repeat Plan earned $593 apiece.     Anne Reynolds Wins Non Pro Bridle Championship at Snaffle Bit Futurity
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    It was a successful day in Reno for the National Reined Cow Horse Association's only female and only Non Pro Million Dollar Rider, Anne Reynolds, King Hill, Idaho. This morning, she qualified both her 3-year-olds for the Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Finals. This evening, she claimed the Non Pro Bridle Championship with her enduring home-raised champion, the 10-year-old gelding More Magic Please (Chic Please x Magical Lena x Little Lenas Legend). Reynolds and "Midget" scored a 146.5 in the rein work and a 147 in the cow work, for a 293.5 total. "He was good everywhere. He's kind of like a little machine. He's just so honest and fun to show. The fence work was just great. He really boxed, the cow was moving around down there, and he was jumping around, and it was really fast and fun. Then we took off down the fence, and he was right on top of it in that first turn and all over it in the second turn. We were running really fast when we went to circle, and he got there." More Magic Please has carried Reynolds to numerous titles during his career, beginning with the 2005 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Championship. The pair won the Non Pro Bridle Spectacular at the NRCHA Derby in June, and have accumulated numerous other wins during their partnership. The Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Bridle win added $4,189 to More Magic Please's lifetime earnings, which are right at the $100,000 mark. The Championship also came with a Bob's Custom saddle sponsored by NRCHA, a Gist Custom Buckle sponsored by CowTrac Systems/Nelson and Colleen Seiden, a CR Morrison Trophy from NRCHA, a monogrammed Cinch jacket from Bob's custom saddles/new west country store, Platinum Performance and a 10 lb bucket of UltraCruz Sand Clear plus a $50 gift certificate, coffee mug and tote from Santa Cruz Animal Health and San Juan Ranch. It doesn't take much schooling to keep More Magic Please sharp and show-ready. The gifted performer is "pretty much automatic," Reynolds said. "He's such a super natural athlete, and then he's just exceptionally cowy. He certainly could have been a cutting horse easily. He's so intent on a cow and expressive and smooth and athletic. And then going down the fence, he's always really good about rating, but it's not hard to get him to go by. He has a lot of respect for the cow but he knows right where it is and he's going to do his job." Two riders tied for the Non Pro Bridle Reserve Championship. Terry Christiansen, Snohomish, Wash., rode TC Lena (Lenas Wright On x Sugari Colonel x Just Plain Colonel) to a composite score of 293, and Lindsey Wadhams marked the same score on Spursuasion (Ray Gay Quixote x Mist N Smoke x Doc Tom Tucker). They each pocketed $2,917 and took home a 10 lb bucket of UltraCruz Sand Clear and $50 gift certificate from Santa Cruz Animal Health and San Juan Ranch, a monogrammed Cinch jacket from Bob's Custom Saddles/New West Country Store, and Platinum Performance. Lindsay Wadhams Wins Intermediate & Novice Non Pro Bridle Championships on Spursuasion

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Lindsay Wadhams was able to check an important goal off her list when she won the Novice Non Pro Bridle Championship on Spursuasion (Ray Gay Quixote x Mist N Smoke).
  • "I wanted to win the Novice so bad. I've been second or third all year in the Novice. I just wanted to win it! That was my biggest goal. Mission accomplished, and I had a great ride, and I couldn't have asked my horse for more," she said. "It was one of the best runs I've ever had on him. I couldn't ask for a better horse." Wadhams piloted Spursuasion to a 146.5 in both the rein work and the cow work. The 293 composite netted not only the coveted Novice Non Pro title, but also the Intermediate Non Pro Championship and Reserve in the Non Pro Bridle. The triple paychecks totaled $6,392. Wadhams also took home a Gist buckle sponsored by Gary Schenck/Associates Property Tax Consultants, Platinum Performance, three monogrammed Cinch jackets from Bob's Custom Saddles/New West Country Store, and a CR Morrison Trophy from the NRCHA. When she's at home in Colorado, she rides with professional trainer Blue Allen, and Wadhams also receives plenty of help from Corey Cushing and Shadd Parkinson when she's at the major events. "I have to give so much credit to Corey, Blue Allen and Shadd. They are the ones who help me get to the top," she said. "I owe a lot to Corey here in Reno. We've been getting up at two o'clock in the morning to practice. It was worth it! It paid off." The Intermediate Non Pro Bridle Reserve Champion was Deborah Wise, who rode Smartlookinboots (Smart Little Pepinic x Sugar Babe Taffy) to a 289 composite score. She earned $1,380. In the Novice Non Pro, Debbie Proctor and Hes A Smokin Indian (Hickorys Indian Pep x Baroak Again) took the $1,375 Reserve Championship check when they marked a 287.5.
