This project originated as a performative lecture, conducted at Central Saint Martins on 18 February 2016, as part of a brief run by Joshua Trees. We were interested in travel documentation and capturing the true essence of a place. With this in mind, we decided to go on a trip and take pictures of what we saw and what we were attracted to. The selection of images from what we brought back are in this book.
3 >
We wanted to go to Nowhere In Particular; as far as we could in the time that we had. So we hitchhiked with no direction in mind.
4 <
The weather was good for image taking.
5 >
6 <
We wanted to capture the true sense of the people, and the atmosphere in general, so we could remember what we did and where we’d been.
7 >
8 <
We took pictures of architecture, views of streets, buildings, houses and structures.
9 >
10 <
11 >
12 <
From big highways, we moved on to more rural areas.
13 >
14 <
We also kept documenting the people we encountered along the way, the surroundings.
15 >
16 <
And what we found interesting.
17 >
18 <
As we travelled further south, we eventually ended up at the sea-side, which was quite refreshing. It was isolated where we were and this was a nice change from earlier. After spending some time at the beach and having a break from being on the road.
19 >
20 <
...We went back on the road.
21 >
22 <
23 >
24 <
We saw some friendly people on the way, they were very accommodating.
25 >
26 <
27 >
28 <
We wanted to document every aspect of our trip and the places we saw, even the mundane.
29 >
30 <
At this point, the weather started to change dramatically and it was like we’d been transported to another place.
31 >
32 <
33 >
34 <
We also noticed the change in architecture.
35 >
36 <
and things like the plants and roads.
37 >
38 <
At some point, we noticed some-thing ahead on the road.
39 >
40 <
It appeared, we had stumbled across a crime scene.
41 >
42 <
Suddenly, the sun was setting.
43 >
44 <
But it didn’t really get dark. We came across a canyon of rocks.
45 >
We ascended the tall peak and at the top we discovered
46 <
47 >
48 <
Where there were lots of foreign plants.
49 >
50 <
It was weird because there was snow as well.
51 >
52 <
And then there was soooo much snow. But don’t worry…
53 >
54 <
Because then it got really hot again.
55 >
56 <
Now, we appeared to be travelling, in what seemed to be an endless suburbia, where we noticed that things started looking the same, for a very long time and things blurred into each other.
57 >
58 <
59 >
60 <
61 >
62 <
But then, after all that sameness, we arrived at, what we called, a concrete city. which looked really like nowhere in particular.
63 >
64 <
Suddenly, a change of scenery...again.
65 >
66 <
Then, we hit a wall of a dense growth of plants which we then parted with our bare hands. On the other side.
67 >
68 <
was a giant orange rock.
69 >
70 <
Behind it were signs of civilization.
71 >
72 <
73 >
74 <
On our travels, we were interest-ed in shape, colour. and composi-tion. and how it could reflect the place.
75 >
76 <
77 >
78 <
We wanted to set up the best shot
79 >
80 <
And capture the perfect image for our memories.

83 >
84 <

90 <
91 >
92 <
So we went on and on.
93 >
94 <
95 >
96 <
And travelled further and further.

106 <
Until – dead end. We reached the point where we had to stop.

But actually in this fictional place which we named Nowhere In Particular, you can go on and on forever around the globe. We gathered these pictures taking snapshots on a website called Random Street View, which does exactly what it says – it gives you photographic images from any location in the world from Googlemaps every time you refresh. This means that you can literally travel around the world in a day, which is something we feel changes the way we visit and explore a place.
109 >
The purpose of this project was to highlight the expanding differences in how we record visual information when exploring places, which we (hopefully) did by juxtaposing the content of google street view’s digital sur-veillance with the more archaic medium of analogue slides and how they differ in their ability to truly capture the essence of a physical place.
