Johnson. Amazingly she also had a role in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In early 1940, while still in Texas, Ladybird Johnson was looking for a family cook. Wright came highly recommended. Her husband Sammy was hired as chauffeur. As a U.S Senator, Johnson asked Wright’s opinion regarding civil rights for Blacks. She informed him of the discrimination faced on a drive to Austin, Texas when escorting Ladybird Johnson and the Johnson children: several hotels refused lodging to her and husband forcing them to sleep in the car; they were refused service in restaurants so the couple had to eat from brown paper bags and not allowed use of bathrooms. Johnson left the room. The Johnsons were very fond of Wright’s southern cooking and as Vice-President, many White House staff and others were quick to accept an invitation to dinner. After the assassination of President Kennedy, President Johnson and White House Executive Chef Rene Verdon squabbled over menu choices. The French chef was instructed to learn from Wright how to prepare the ‘homey’ meals the President preferred. Verdon resigned. Wright cooked all meals until another executive chef was hired and continued as President Johnson’s personal chef until he left office in 1969. She worked for the family for almost 30 years. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act on July 2, 1964.
