Now rupee says
somethingFinally, the Rupee has a symbol like other major global
currencies! In a historic event, a five-member jury set up
finalize symbol for the rupee selected the design presente
by IIT-ian D Udaya Kumar. The Union Cabinet approved the
symbol of rupee. The Indian rupee is now the fifth curren
in the world to have a distinct identity. The rupee will join
the elite club of US dollar, British pound-sterling, Euro an
Japanese yen to have its own symbol. it would also help in
distinguishing the Indian currency from rupee or rupiah of
countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
In an interview Udaya Kumar said: "My design is based on
the Tricolor, with two lines at the top and white space in
between. I wanted the symbol for the Rupee to representthe Indian flag. It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman
letters: a capital 'R', and Devanagari ra , which represent
rupiya, to appeal to international and Indian audiences."
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said
that the symbol will be printed or embossed on currency notes and coins. Soni also said that the
government will try that the symbol is adopted within six months in the country and globally withi
18 to 24 months. The symbol will feature on computer key boards and software so that it can be
printed and displayed in electronic and print.
Kumar was one of the five finalists whose designs had been shortlisted for final approval. Kumar,
however, was very hopeful of winning the Rupee symbol design contest. Udaya Kumar's design is
based on the Tricolor and 'arithmetic equivalence'. The white space between the two horizontal
lines gives the impression of the national flag with the Ashok Chakra, the two bold parallel lines
stand for 'equals to', representing balance in the economy, both within and with other economies
the world.

Mr.udaya kumar says "It was a challenge to design the symbol for the rupee. I made sure that it i
simple and easy for a common man to understand.
From his younger days, Udaya was good at art so he pursued a degree in Architecture and a
master's in Graphic Design. He has won several design competitions during his college days.
He worked as a designer for Intelligent Computing Chip magazine for two years. Later, he realised
the need to focus on regional typography. He was doing research at the Industrial Design Centre
(IDC) at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT Bombay), on the evolution of the Tamil
script and typographic transformation which took place from palm leaf manuscript to early
letterpress printing. He has now been appointed as faculty at IIT Guwahati's Department of
Design.
This was not easy for Mr.Udaya to win competition there were other four finalists whose Rupee
symbol design had been shortlisted are: Nondita Correa-Mehrotra (architect); Shahrukh J Irani
(creative director, Publicis Ambience); Shibin K K, (a school teacher in Kerala); and HiteshPadmashali (creative director, JWT)
The Indian government had announced a competition in March last year inviting creative designs
from Indian residents to represent the rupee in a simple form. The finance ministry guidelines
stated that the symbol should represent the historical and cultural ethos of the country. It shoul
be applicable to a standard keyboard and has to be in the Indian national language script or a visua
representation of it. The size of the final design should not be smaller than 232 square cm (36 sq
inches).
Five designs were short-listed from over 25,000 applications received from
across the country. The short-listed candidates made a presentation on the design in December a
the winning design is set to create history in March. The finance ministry had also declared prize
money of Rs 2.5 lakh for the finally selected design. Currently, the abbreviation of the Indian
Rupee, 'Re' or 'Rs' is also used by Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
