The The Vol LXIII No. 2, May 2013 Spring 2013 YOUR CONNECTION TO WHAT’S HAPPENING AT Summer 2013 Lutheridge, Lutherock, Luther Springs A mother, whose child received a scholarship to attend Luther Springs, and who wishes to remain anonymous, wrote this about her 10-year-olds’ experience last summer. I never realized the impact that a Christian camp can have until one day we were visiting with friends and my son retold a story he had learned at Luther Springs. A seed had been planted and he was able to relate a story from the Bible to share a life lesson with a friend. As a mom I was very proud to know that my children have accepted and understand our faith. In today’s fast-paced world, with countless options for youth and families apart from faith-filled, inspirational experiences, it is vitally important that congregational leaders make a special effort to promote youth to attend camp from their congregations. Lutheran Church of The Nativity, Arden, NC , is doing just that! The year 2013 is their 50 th anniversary and they have issued a challenge to the congregation to send 50 youth and families to summer camp. Pastor Mark Fitzsimmons had this to say about the camp emphasis. “Nativity’s lifelong ministry partner is Lutheridge. Our congregation abounds with campers and counselors from throughout Lutheridge’s history. Through our gift of fifty scholarships this summer, we continue to invest in a ministry which is life-changing and ultimately parish-empowering.” Keaton’s Mom Keaton’s favorite things to do are crafts, hiking, being away from his parents for a whole week and racing to see who in his cabin can take the quickest shower. Keaton’s record is 30 seconds! Lutheridge is one of the highlights of his summer.” Jonah I like the last night of camp when we go sit by the campfire at the lakeside singing songs.” Tom “My son John had fun his first year of camp and is going back this summer. He likes the end of the day discussing his favorite activities of the day and his counselor playing his guitar in the cabin. “ Ashley “Last year was my first year at Lutheridge and I LOVED IT. My favorite parts were making new crafts, songs during worship time, Pastor Tim’s sermons and my awesome camp counselor Katie! I can’t wait for this year’s adventures.” Laura Fourth of July family camp has been a highlight of our summer for the past three years. The children enjoy sessions with the counselors in the morning, giving the adults time for a Bible study. We are reunited for lunch. Keith Johnson, Executive Director, indicated that people have been intriqued by the site logos. He shared the following information on the historical significance of and the scriptural reference behind each logo.

The graphic image represents a return to the historic campfire logo and illustrates the promise of II Timothy 2: “…rekindle the gift that is within you…” www.Lutheridge.com.

Luther Rock at the top of Sugar Mountain is the logo, the name of the camp and the promise to campers and guests as expressed in Psalm 18, “the Lord is my Rock…” www.Lutherock.com.

The sunshine and palm tree have always been a part of the logo for Luther Springs and carry the hope expressed in the Gospel of Matthew, “…the righteous shall shine like the sun…” www.Luthersprings.com.

As the newest site, Lutheranch did not previously have a logo. The visual image portrays guests entering through the gate as promised in the 10th chapter of John, “…I am the gate for the Sheep…” www.Lutheranch.com.

Johnson went on to say why the name NovusWay Ministries was chosen. He explained that NovusWay is Latin for fresh, unusual and extraordinary…apt descriptions for the expanded ministry. Johnson also said, “The concept of a ‘new way’ is familiar for Christians. Early believers were known as people of the way. Throughout Scripture we hear the promise that God is doing something new.” He also wanted to remind friends and supporters that the mission has not changed, nor has the Lutheran identity, affiliation or ownership of the camps. “It is our desire that every camper and guest will get inspired as Jesus encounters them to live anew as disciples of Christ.”

Standing on Promise The Lutheranch display was featured in the Sims Atrium at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Atlanta, as part of the congregation’s “Standing on the Promise” campaign for Lutheranch. The campaign leader is Amy Carpenter, who also serves on the NovusWay Board of Trustees and who previously chaired “The Challenge” campaign (for Lutheranch) for her congregation. When asked why she works so hard in support of Lutheranch Carpenter remarked, “While it may be a lot of work, it

is not hard work! It is about telling the story and giving people the opportunity to respond. Our council, staff and other leaders have made this campaign a priority. The retreat center must be built – enabling thousands, especially those of us in the Southeastern Synod, to gather in Christ-centered community in God’s great creation.”

The final results of the campaign were not known when this addition of the LINK went to press, but the $150,000 goal set by the congregation had been significantly exceeded with over $235,000 in commitments. If you would like more information on “Standing on the Promise” campaign, please contact Libby Bedenbaugh, campaign director at [email protected] or 803-940-6523.

A new swimming pool will be installed at Lutheridge prior to summer camp 2014. The donors who made a lead gift for the pool, and who wish to remain anonymous, authored the following story, “The Cigar Box”, on what prompted their gift.

The Cigar Box The cigar box lived in the dresser drawer of my parent’s

bedroom. I remember it from when I was four – it contained the tithe money.

My father was a pastor, having graduated from seminary in 1933. He served a 2 point parish in Stephens City, VA (his earliest call was to a 5 point parish in east Tennessee). Whenever he was paid for his services, whether it was his meager salary, an occasional wedding or funeral, or dollars paid for his delicious honey he harvested, he would take the 10% FIRST and place it in the cigar box. There were times when he was paid his salary with produce and butchering items – hard to put that in a box! But we were taught that we give to God first and live on the rest.

My husband and I passed on that lesson to our children. Their cigar box was a shoebox in their dresser. But the effect was the same. They were taught that we give to God first.

One motto of our lives has been “Blessed to be a Blessing”.

Mom died last year at age 97, Dad having died almost 30 years prior. When she left a small inheritance we knew we could best honor her by giving a portion of it away. We chose Lutheridge because we KNOW what a blessing the camp had been to our family – countless camping experiences for us and our children and now our grandchild. Mom and Dad came here for many pastor retreats and camping weeks. And we read the stories of all today’s campers who are experiencing the same life-changing weeks.

And so the story of the CIGAR BOX lives on. Blessed to be a blessing remains our goal.

Facelift Planned for Thornburg hallAccording to Pastor Mike Ward, Vice President of Advancement, the long-awaited

remodeling of Thornburg Hall has begun. It will include a new HVAC system that has not only been long-requested, but will be more energy efficient. Bathrooms will be partially privatized and guest rooms will receive new carpeting, new furnishings and a fresh coat of paint. According to Ward, “Thornburg Hall serves more guests than any other lodging facility at Lutheridge. Guests have been requesting these improvements throughout my 12-year tenure.” He also indicated that funding will come from both the Heritage Campaign and through a special $10.00 per guest “Facility Enhancement Fee”

giants in the Faith Lutheridge has lost some good friends recently.

So have I. One of my greatest joys as Executive Director is getting to know the pioneers, giants in the faith who had the vision and commitment to establish Lutheridge, Lutherock, Luther Springs and now Lutheranch. It’s hard to say goodbye because

they have become special friends and have left a lasting heritage at our camps. Here are just a few of the contributions of those who have entered the church triumphant in the last two months:

• A long-time board and finance committee member, who with his wife was instrumental in launching the RidgeRockRanch Builders giving program.

• Another long-time friend who, with his wife, led a senior adult program at Lutheridge for 10 years and whose daughter-in-law chaired the Board of Trustees.

• Another long-time supporter with a home at Lutheridge, together with her husband gifted funds to build the operations centers at both Lutheridge and Lutherock.

• Another departed saint developed the campfirmation program at Lutheridge over 40 years ago. Over 20,000 confirmands have benefited by sharing in campfirmation over the years.

• The son-in-law and daughter-in-law of the first board chair, recently passed. They made gifts to two scholarship endowments, another endowment to care for the chapel and made a gift to remodel Bischoff Lodge and the wilderness cabins.

• We lost a good friend who served decades on staff, and left a lasting impression on campers and staff with her infectious smile and the twinkle in her eyes.

It was a privilege for me to count these saints in the faith as friends. While we mourn their death and grieve our loss, we also celebrate the tremendous heritage they left to us. At one of the memorial services we sang a great hymn;

God’s Word is our great heritage and shall be ours forever; To spread its light from age to age shall be our chief endeavor;Through life it guides our way, in death it is our stay.Lord grant that while time shall last, your church may hold it fast;Throughout all generations.

These are just a few of the saints in the faith who have left us a great legacy. There are many others. May we continue to be faithful to God’s Word and to a great heritage of ministry at Lutheridge, Lutherock, Luther Springs and Lutheranch.

If the Holy Spirit is stirring your heart to support this ministry and to leave your own legacy, please contact me at [email protected] is a joy and privilege to serve with you!

for adult accommodations for the next six years. “We’ve conducted surveys that have indicated guests are willing to pay this fee in order to improve Thornburg Hall,” Ward indicated. “While we don’t believe this will present a financial hardship for guests, scholarship funding will be available if needed, as we don’t want to

turn away anyone who wants to come to Lutheridge.”

Jon Frock, Sr. Facilities Consultant, indicated that work began in mid-November 2012 through mid-January 2013 and that the initial response from guests has been very good. Frock went on to say, “Thornburg Hall is such a well used facility that it has been difficult to find time to undertake the work. We are hopeful that the balance of the project can be completed from mid-November 2013 through January 2014.”

Thornburg Hall is just one of the projects being funded through the Heritage Campaign for Lutheridge. Lineberger Hall and Mission Hall have been remodeled and the gatehouse section of the entrance road has been resurfaced. A new swimming pool will be completed by summer 2014 and a tithe of campaign proceeds will go toward Lutheranch land acquisition.

Committed gifts total $1.7 million toward the $2 million goal with an additional $2 million in planned giving commitments. If you would like to help with the Heritage Campaign, please contact campaign director, the Rev. Jan Setzler at 864-942-2974 or [email protected].

At my age this is very important.”

• “I made a gift to the Heritage Campaign and I feel the funds are being well spent in Thornburg Hall.”

Through a bequest from the estate of Lucy Olga Tompkins Huntley and a gift to the Southeastern Synod from the estate of the Rev. Harvey Lewis Huntley, Sr., a legacy gift has been given to Lutheranch to name one of the lounges in the planned multiple use retreat center, and to remodel one of the guest rooms in Thornburg Hall at Lutheridge. These gifts culminated a lifetime of interest in camping and outdoor ministries that included Harvey’s service as Southeastern Synod President and later chairing the Lutheridge Board of Trustees.

Harvey and Lucy were both born in Virginia. Lucy graduated from James Madison University with a degree in chemistry and home economics. Prior to their children she worked as a chemist during WWII. Harvey graduated from Bridgewater College in Virginia and taught in public school and served as an elementary school principal before attending Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, PA, where he graduated in 1941 at which time they were married.

Huntley served parishes in Pennsylvania before moving to Augusta, Georgia, where he served as pastor of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection from 1953-1967. During this time he was elected secretary of the Georgia/Alabama Synod in 1962 and President of the Southeastern Synod in 1967. Harvey Jr., remembers, “I went to Lutheridge with my

dad during his earliest days in Augusta. We stayed in Mission Hall and Dr. Thornburg was the director.” Following his tenure as synod president, Huntley served as mission developer in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and as an intentional interim pastor in several synod congregations. It was during this time that he served on the Lutheridge Board of Trustees, with one term as board president.

Huntley Jr., also recalls that during his father’s tenure as synod president a parcel of land was offered to the synod in the greater Atlanta area for use as a retreat center and synod office. The synod declined the offer, but it shows the idea of a camping/retreat facility on the synod territory has been alive for decades. “I am confident that he would be enthused about what has happened and is happening at Lutheranch,” exclaimed Huntley.

Huntley Jr., continued his family’s interest in outdoor ministry as he brought groups to Lutheridge over the years. When a task force was formed in 2002 to lay the ground work for a new outdoor ministry site, he joined the effort even though he was living outside the Southeastern Synod. If you would like more information on how you can leave a legacy at Lutheranch, Lutheridge, Luther Springs or Lutherock contact the Rev. Mike Ward at 828-209-6325, [email protected]

huntley’s leave legacy at lutheridge and lutheranch

100 years youngcamp is also for grown-ups!

Because several board members of the Gainesville, Florida, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans chapter had a fondness for Luther Springs, they decided it would be a great place to hold a thank you event for chapter members. Yvonne Will, Thrivent member and Luther Springs board member remembers, “The theme was ‘Over the Rainbow’ with the idea that Thrivent can help make your dreams come true. There was a program including music and games for children. Many of the young families brought their kids and one member, Dick Henderson of Gethsemane Lutheran, brought his mother, Elda, who was 100 years old at the time. She had the picture taken above as a souvenir of the day.”

Elda is not alone as an older adult who enjoys time at camp. While all of our sites have strong programs for children and youth, more and more adults and families are participating in year round opportunities at Lutheridge, Luther Springs, Lutheranch and Lutherock. Camp is not just for kids, it is also for grown-ups. Camp

facilities have changed. No bunk beds for the adults who also appreciate private bathrooms, AC, gourmet meals and high quality program leaders. Lisa Spitler, VP of Program, has formed a special task force to develop programs for adults, focusing on the baby boomer generation. If you would like more information on emerging adult programs, Lisa can be reached at [email protected], or call 828-209-6316.

ten summers of volunteer service

Jerry and Wanda Butt first came to Lutheridge in summer 2003. Their granddaughter was attending Lutherock and they were looking for a volunteer opportunity in

the mountains to escape the summer heat in central Florida. They ended up spending the entire summer at Lutheridge and little did they know they would return for the next nine summers.

Jerry recalls from their experience, “When we first arrived in our RV, it took us about five minutes to realize we were in a special place, different from any place we had ever been before. We received so much praise for doing the ordinary things that needed to be done around camp. One of my best memories is when the entire staff worked hard to prepare for accreditation by the American Camp Association, for the first time in Lutheridge’s history. We made it!”

Jerry primarily took care of requests from staff that needed immediate response, particularly in the maintenance area. Wanda worked in the

office and enjoyed the interaction with campers and guests, and provided administrative help for Pastors Tim and Mary, Lutheridge Program Directors.

Wanda remarked about her time at Lutheridge. “Pastor Mary’s mother, Gilda Kuhn, went out of her way to make us feel welcome and helped us get acquainted with Lutheridge residents by inviting us to Tuesday evening dinners at her home. We also made friends with many of the summer staff members and have been invited to many weddings!”

Pastor Mary Canniff-Kuhn said how much she and the other staff will miss Jerry and Wanda, “They have shown a whole generation of Lutheridge staff what it means to be faithful servants for God’s kingdom and thankful witnesses to God’s generosity. Their joyful spirit and willing attitude makes each of

us try harder and smile more often. Over and over, I hear counselors say, ‘I want to be like Jerry and Wanda when I grow up.’ Yes, Lord, make it so.”

Jerry and Wanda are planning a visit to Colorado and the western states this summer. In 2014 they are also hoping to find an RV Park somewhere in Western North Carolina, which would make them available to stop by Lutheridge from time to time and help with special projects. If you would like to help at one of the NovusWay sites, please contact Craig Rieger, Sites Manager, at [email protected] or call 828-209-6313.

Springs for an orientation to the Immersion process, and learn from those who have led groups, those who have been part of small groups, as well as meeting at least one of the members of the Lutheran Church of Haiti who will be hosting you.  Learn what to expect when you are there, learn what the Haitian hosts will do for and with you, but more importantly, learn how to build the excitement within your congregation or group.  The Florida-Bahamas Synod, together with Luther Springs, will be working closely with your group, securing air travel and rooms while there, as well as ensuring you will have the contacts needed while in Haiti.

The retreat will begin Friday evening, and will end Saturday after the evening meal.  There will be the option to spend Saturday night at Luther Springs for a small additional fee.

This retreat is vital for congregational leaders planning to go to Haiti, as well as for those who are interested in the next trip for Deacon training, a fast growing ministry in Haiti.  If you are unable to attend, but would like more information, please contact the Luther Springs office at 352-546-5554.

faith alive! confirmation Retreats at lutheridge Four weekends - SEVEN retreats. Two separate retreats each weekend - except November. Our unique curriculum uses

experiential learning to leave lasting lessons. Lutheridge staff provide supervision for campers, staying in cabins with them and sharing their

faithful witness. Campers can come alone or with a group. Lessons are geared to middle school, but 5th grade through high school youth are welcome to attend (Campers will be placed in cabin groups with those close to their own age).

Adult leaders are welcome and encouraged to participate, but not required to attend. Each camper creates a “witness” to share what they have learned with those back home. Pastors Tim and Mary Canniff-Kuhn provide program design and oversight, with involvement from other leaders.

To: Pastors Tim and Mary Canniff-Kuhn:“I just read the Faith Alive papers that each of my confirmation students wrote while they were with you learning about Baptism. I was very touched by what they wrote and reminded that an experience at Lutheridge can be a powerful faith building experience in addition to Sunday school and confirmation class. We have been coming for 3-4 years now and I will make sure Faith Alive remains an important part of our confirmation curriculum.” ~ Pastor Chris Webb, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Asheville, NC

Summer 2013 Lutheridge, Lutherock, Luther Springs

A mother, whose child received a scholarship to attend Luther Springs, and who wishes to remain anonymous, wrote this about her 10-year-olds’ experience last summer. “I never realized the impact that a Christian camp can have until one day we were visiting with friends and my son retold a story he had learned at Luther Springs. A seed had been planted and he was able to relate a story from the Bible to share a life lesson with a friend. As a mom I was very proud to know that my children have accepted and understand our faith. “

In today’s fast-paced world, with countless options for youth and families apart from faith-filled, inspirational experiences, it is vitally important that congregational leaders make a special effort to promote youth to attend camp from their congregations. Lutheran Church of The Nativity, Arden, NC , is doing just that! The year 2013 is their 50th anniversary and they have issued a challenge to the congregation to send 50 youth and families to summer camp. Pastor Mark Fitzsimmons had this to say about the camp emphasis.

“Nativity’s lifelong ministry partner is Lutheridge. Our congregation abounds with campers and counselors from throughout Lutheridge’s history. Through our gift of fifty scholarships this summer, we continue to invest in a ministry which is life-changing and ultimately parish-empowering.”

• Keaton’s Mom “Keaton’s favorite things to do are crafts, hiking, being away from his parents for a whole week and racing to see who in his cabin can take the quickest shower. Keaton’s record is 30 seconds! Lutheridge is one of the highlights of his summer.”

•Jonah “I like the last night of camp when we go sit by the campfire at the lakeside singing songs.”

•Tom “My son John had fun his first year of camp and is going back this summer. He likes the end of the day discussing his favorite activities of the day and his counselor playing his guitar in the cabin. “

•Ashley “Last year was my first year at Lutheridge and I  LOVED IT. My favorite parts were making new crafts, songs during worship time, Pastor Tim’s sermons and my awesome camp counselor Katie! I can’t wait for this year’s adventures.”

•Laura “Fourth of July family camp has been a highlight of our summer for the past three years. The children enjoy sessions with the counselors in the morning, giving the adults time for a Bible study. We are reunited for lunch. Each evening there is a family vespers to take a moment and remember our blessings.”

“I Never Realized The Impact of Christian Camp”

There is still time to register for summer camp. Go to www.NovusWay.com or directly to each camp’s website www. Lutheridge.com, www.Lutherock.com, www.LutherSprings.com , or call

828-684-2361. The staff can also help promote camp in your congregation. Financial assistance will be provided to anyone in need. Please do not let finances keep you or a loved one from

experiencing the benefits of sharing in the Christ–centered camp communities.
