2 The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Message from the President Deborah F. Rutter
These past few weeks have brought joy to my soul. Halls that have been dark and lonely for months are once again bright and filled with my Kennedy Center friends and family. Though all is not exactly the same—we will always prioritize the health and safety of our guests, artists, staff, and volunteers—at long last we are returning to things that feel familiar. Artists are back to work, patrons are back in their seats, and we are connecting through the shared experience of a live performance.
While our re-opening would be momentous at any time, it is especially significant as we begin our 50th Anniversary Season. For the past 50 years, and for years to come, this building has been more than a theater. It is a home for artists and arts lovers to create and experience art. Whether you have been attending performances for 50 years, or are a newer part of our family, I hope you will visit us during this exciting anniversary season.
As we look to the future we also enjoy tradition, and some of my favorite traditions involve the upcoming holiday season. We’ll celebrate with The Nutcracker, Ingrid Michaelson and the NSO’s A Holiday Pops, The Roots Holiday Tour, John Oliver ringing in the New Year, and so much more. WNO makes its triumphant return to the Opera House with Come Home: A Celebration of Return and we welcome back the best of Broadway with two feel-good smash hits, Beautiful and Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations.
This is just a taste of what we have in store, and as you flip through these pages I know you will find even more to remind you why you love the performing arts. And if we aren’t able to welcome you back in person just yet, enjoy the performances on our Digital Stage. Even as we re-open our theaters, we will continue to expand upon our digital offerings, bringing you the arts wherever you are.
Welcome home!

Kennedy Center Education Expanding digital offeringsThe Kennedy Center has supported educators, families, and students through digital learning for almost 30 years. When COVID-19 caused a sudden pivot to remote and virtual learning settings, we responded with robust programming that included online arts programming for children and youth, virtual field trips for children and youth, online professional learning for educators, and an expansion of our digital resources library. We reached over 3 million users through Kennedy Center Education’s virtual offerings last year. We invite you to join us online and subscribe to our email list at Kennedy-Center.org/education.
Online Arts Programming for Children and YouthWe brought Kennedy Center Education programming into living rooms and classrooms across the nation though Moonshot@Home and our Teaching Artists Present series. Moonshot@Home is a digital series aimed at bringing the energy and joy of the Moonshot Studio to people in their homes. Moonshot@Home activities use widely available materials and engaging prompts to spark at-home, off-screen creative adventures for people of all ages. Kennedy Center teaching artists have designed Teaching Artists Present to introduce art forms, activities, and exercises that open up participants’ minds, bodies, and ways of interacting with the people and world around them.
Online Professional LearningKennedy Center professional learning includes workshops, webinars, and online courses. Four fully online professional development courses were developed and delivered to dozens of educators across the country, with more now in development. Courses developed so far have focused on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Differentiated Instruction, and integrating the arts and special education.
Virtual Field TripsThe launch of virtual field trips included a collection of free music, theater, and dance performances for young people, the classroom, and the whole family. Through the virtual field trips, we expanded our reach nationally and internationally, with 1,930 schools (60% Title I) participating last year. TTogether, Kennedy Center Education’s virtual field trips reached an estimated 741,297 students in the 2020–2021 season. All virtual field trip content is reviewed by our accessibility team, ensuring that content is compatible with screen readers and that videos are captioned, audio-described, and accompanied by ASL interpretation as needed. We are excited to share virtual field trips once again this season! Visit our virtual field trips collection at Kennedy-Center.org/education/resources-for-educators/classroom-resources/media-and-interactives/digital-programming/virtual-field-trips.
Digital Resource LibrarySignificant enhancements and additions have been made to the Digital Resources Library including new lesson plans, teaching tools and tips for teachers, featured units of instruction, and new interactive content. Our newest addition, the updated reintroduction of our popular Perfect Pitch interactive, is a highly engaging, baseball-themed learning experience that introduces learners of all ages to the instruments in the orchestra. It includes a series of carousels where you can explore the instruments making their debuts during various musical eras, a virtual mixing board where you can create your own musical arrangements, and a quiz module that lets you test your knowledge. You can access all of our content and features by visiting the library’s newly reconfigured page at Kennedy-Center.org/education/resources-for-educators/classroom-resources.
