Understanding The Resurrections . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .22Most “religious” people believe in some form of heaven and hell asreward or punishment for human beings. Does this mean that everyone reared in the “wrong religion” will spend eternity in hell? The Bible gives a surprising—and reassuring—answer to this question.

Page 3: November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 · November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 Regional Offices Tomorrow’s World® (USPS #020-391) is published bimonthly by the Living

All across the Bible Belt, you see signs orbumper stickers proclaiming “Jesus Saves,” or “Goto the Church of Your Choice.” The people dis-playing these signs are, no doubt, well meaning.

But perhaps we should pause to ask, “WhichJesus?” and also, “What about attending thechurch of God’s choice—the church where the fullTruth of the Bible is taught and practiced?”

Although it is not “politically correct” todayto say that there is definitive truth—and that onereligion might be better than another—that isexactly what the Bible does say! So it comes downto this: are we going to be like little children“playing church,” or are we going to act likemature adults who are willing to seek the trueGod and find out where He is now working?

Insight magazine (May 27, 2002) reported:“Churches are getting a bad rap these days. Somepollsters say at best religion is losing its grip onAmerican society; at worst, growing numbers ofAmericans are finding the institution irrelevant.Nearly 100 million Americans live without a con-nection to a church, synagogue or temple, sayspollster George Barna, president of the BarnaResearch Group in Ventura, CA. Most of them areunconcerned about this state of affairs. ‘More thanaverage, these are people who are aggressive, high-energy and driven,’ he says. ‘They have madesomething of themselves, by the world’s standards, and they do not necessarily believe that God, Jesus, religion, the Bible, faith or Christianity will helpthem overcome the struggles they face.’”

Frankly, one of the major struggles we will allbe facing in the next decade or so is staying alive!Yes! For as the awesome events directly predictedin your Bible begin to unfold, you and I had bet-ter be sure that we are in the church that trulyunderstands Bible prophecy, and that knows the“way of escape” Jesus tells us about in God’sWord. Remember, Jesus Himself told His follow-

ers in an end-time prophecy: “Therefore whenyou see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken ofby Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place(whoever reads, let him understand), “then letthose who are in Judea flee to the mountains’….And pray that your flight may not be in winter oron the Sabbath. For then there will be great tribu-lation, such as has not been since the beginning ofthe world until this time, no, nor ever shall be”(Matthew 24:15–21).

Does your church understand and teachabout this vital prophecy and the way to escapethe coming Great Tribulation? Does your ministereven preach about end-time prophecy?

Why not?Approximately one-fourth of the entire Bible

is devoted to prophecy. The Bible explains: “ButJesus answered him, saying, ‘It is written, “Manshall not live by bread alone, but by every word ofGod”’” (Luke 4:4). The only written “word ofGod” at that time was what we now call the OldTestament. And Jesus Christ constantly referredto the writings of the Old Testament as “scrip-ture.” So the inspired prophecies in both the Oldand New Testaments are vital for us to study andunderstand. How do so many churches thinktheir members can understand and act on God’sprophetic warnings if they never even preach orexplain these prophecies to their people?

Think! The Word of God tells us: “The fear of the

LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good under-standing have all those who do His command-ments. His praise endures forever” (Psalm111:10). Yet most Protestant churches tell theirmembers that the Ten Commandments do nothave to be literally obeyed today. Therefore, thesesame churches do not have a “good understand-

ast summer, when theUnited States Ninth CircuitCourt issued its decisionagainst using “under God”

in the Pledge of Allegiance, thiswas just one small symbol ofAmerica’s rejection of the trueGod of creation. For even manywho profess to be religious areconstantly defying the God of theBible!

America is increasinglybecoming an armed campbecause of the fear of terroristattacks. Our crime rate is goingback up. Drug use—especiallyamong young people—is taking aterrible toll. Cocaine use is risingrapidly. The AIDS epidemic isonce again rising among homo-sexuals. Enormous wildfires aredestroying vast areas of ournation. Priests, professing to beservants of God, are increasinglyfound to have been engaging inhorrifying and perverted actswith young people. Meanwhile—in the “land of the free”—millionsof unborn babies are being vacu-umed out of their mothers’wombs in what has been called“the silent holocaust.” Drought, followed by water rationing, isbecoming more and more wide-spread, yet massive flooding isoccurring in other parts of thenation. And now, some one billionMuslims, and hundreds of mil-lions of Europeans, are becomingdisillusioned and resentful ofAmerica’s dominance and powerover world affairs.

Why is all this happening? It is happening because—as a

nation—we have absolutely reject-ed the God of the Bible. The realGod of the Bible, with whommost people are not familiar, doesindeed intervene in world affairs

to fulfill His purpose. He is theOne who has given us the awe-some blessings and power thatAmerica and her allies haveshared for well over a century. Heis the One who helped us winWorld Wars I and II—and indeedall our major wars for nearly 200years!

The God of the Bible told ourforefathers: “If you walk in Mystatutes and keep My command-ments, and perform them, then Iwill give you rain in its season, the land shall yield its produce, and the trees of the field shallyield their fruit. Your threshingshall last till the time of vintage, and the vintage shall last till thetime of sowing; you shall eat yourbread to the full, and dwell inyour land safely. I will give peacein the land, and you shall liedown, and none will make youafraid; I will rid the land of evilbeasts, and the sword will not gothrough your land. You will chaseyour enemies, and they shall fallby the sword before you”(Leviticus 26:3–7). For severalgenerations, God has certainlyfulfilled His promise to bestowblessings upon the American andBritish-descended peoples. But,today, the “handwriting is on thewall.” The tide of world events isbeginning to change—and changedramatically!

A few verses later in theabove prophecy, the Creator said:“‘But if you do not obey Me, anddo not observe all these com-mandments, and if you despiseMy statutes, or if your soulabhors My judgments, so thatyou do not perform all My com-mandments, but break Mycovenant, I also will do this toyou: I will even appoint terror

over you, wasting disease andfever which shall consume theeyes and cause sorrow of heart. And you shall sow your seed invain, for your enemies shall eat it.I will set My face against you, andyou shall be defeated by yourenemies. Those who hate youshall reign over you, and youshall flee when no one pursuesyou’” (vv. 14–17). This is certain-ly a dual prophecy that had anoriginal fulfillment on ancientIsrael. But it will have a modernfulfillment on our people in thispresent generation. Many of youwill live to see this happen! Andnearly all of us will see, over thenext several years, the beginningsof this unfolding tragedy.

We will witness the begin-ning of God’s intervention tochasten the American andBritish-descended peoples for ourown good. For God said: “I willbreak the pride of your power; Iwill make your heavens like ironand your earth like bronze”(Leviticus 26:19). If you do notyet know about our nationalidentity in biblical prophecy, besure to contact us at one of theaddresses listed on page 2 of thismagazine, and request a free copyof our eye-opening booklet enti-tled What’s Ahead For Americaand Britain?

God Is Consistent

In His inspired Word, theEternal tells us: “For I am theLORD, I do not change; thereforeyou are not consumed, O sons ofJacob” (Malachi 3:6). In His over-all approach, God is consistent inHis dealings with men and withnations. We are told in the NewTestament book of Hebrews:

America is enduring enormous suffering because of false religion!

L

“And you have forgotten theexhortation which speaks to youas to sons: ‘My son, do notdespise the chastening of theLORD, nor be discouraged whenyou are rebuked by Him: forwhom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom Hereceives’” (Hebrews 12:5–6).

If God loves us, why wouldHe powerfully “chastise” theAmerican and British-descendedpeoples?

Why?The real answer is that we are

a nation of hypocrites! While wein America put “In God WeTrust” on our coins, we are a peo-ple in constant rebellion againstthe laws and ways of that sameGod. Do millions of Americansattend church every Sunday? Yes!But, shocking as it may seem, thatis part of the problem!

“How so?” you may ask. It is part of the problem

because the vast majority ofchurchgoers are never taught aboutthe very way of life that wouldspare us from the severe chastise-ment soon to befall our peoples. Aswe saw above, God said that Hewould punish His people: “If youdo not obey Me, and do not observeall these commandments…”(Leviticus 26:14).

And “here’s the rub”—thevast majority of professingChristians are told that they donot have to “literally” keep theTen Commandments! Yes, as lit-tle children they may be taught inSunday School to memorize the“short form” of the TenCommandments, but their minis-ters consistently refuse to teachthe Ten Commandments as a wayof life—as Jesus Christ Himselfdid. Those of you who can workup the courage to ask your minis-ter: “Do Christians really need to

keep the Ten Commandments as a way of life?”—may be sur-prised at the answer. For the vast majority of ministers willanswer—as they were taught intheir seminaries—that the TenCommandments “may” be goodguidelines, but you do not reallyneed to keep them!

Rather, these professingChr i s t i an minis te rs most ly avoid talking about the TenCommandments at all. Some will teach that the Ten Com-mandments are the “Law ofMoses”—not for us today—orthat the Ten Commandmentswere somehow “nailed to thecross of Christ,” or “done away”by the Apostle Paul. These minis-ters have all kinds of miserableexcuses as to why the TenCommandments need not be lit-erally kept today—though JesusChrist taught His followers tokeep them (see Matthew 5:17–19;M a t t h e w 1 9 : 1 6 – 1 9 ; L u k e16:16–18). Jesus’ own brother, the inspired Apost le James, wrote: “For whoever shall keepthe whole law, and yet stumble inone point, he is guilty of all. ForHe who said, ‘Do not commitadultery,’ also said, ‘Do not mur-der.’ Now if you do not commitadultery, but you do murder, youhave become a transgressor of thelaw. So speak and so do as thosewho will be judged by the law of liberty” (James 2:10–12).Certainly, the “law” that describesadultery and murder as sin is theTen Commandments. James saidthat you and I will be “judged” bythat law! What could be moreclear than that?

Jesus’ beloved Apostle Johnwrote: “Here is the patience of thesaints; here are those who keepthe commandments of God andthe faith of Jesus” (Revelation

14:12). Yet a diabolically cleverSatan the Devil has managed totwist the meaning of certain pas-sages in the Bible in a way to con-tradict the dozens of plain, clearscriptures telling God’s people toobey the Ten Commandments as away of life!

In his final letter at the veryend of his ministry, the ApostlePeter warned us about unstablemen who “twist to their owndestruction” the writings of theApostle Paul. He instructed thosewho knew the Truth that hadbeen taught by Jesus Christ:“Therefore, dear friends, sinceyou already know this, be onyour guard so that you may notbe carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position” (2 Peter3:17, NIV). Obviously, these“lawless men” were not merelyteaching against the traffic laws.Peter was inspired by God to warn us against those false teachers—o f t e n t h e m s e l v e s d e c e i v e dby Satan—who would “twist”Paul’s writings so as to supposed-l y “ d o a w a y ” w i t h t h e Te nCommandments!

In Jesus’ name—as His ser-vant—I admonish all of you min-isters and priests who are readingthis to wake up! You, too, cancertainly be forgiven for your pastignorance. You, too, were proba-bly “blinded” by the massivedeception of Satan the Devil“who deceives the whole world”(Revelation 12:9).

The Wages of SIN Is Death

God tells us in Romans 6:23:“The wages of sin is death, but thegift of God is eternal life in ChristJesus our Lord.”

Sin automatically brings sor-row, suffering and, eventually, the

second death in the Lake of Fire, unless it is bitterly repented of(Revelation 21:8). As we read in 1John 3:4: “Whosoever commit-teth sin transgresseth also thelaw: for sin is the transgression ofthe law” (KJV). For God’s law—the Ten Commandments—is likethe law of gravity. God’s spirituallaw “works” whether you believein it or not! The profound sorrowin the voices and faces of thoseabused in their youth by RomanCatholic priests should tell ussomething. Such perverted, sinfulacts bring about years or evendecades of agony and suffering.

How can those bishops andcardinals who “covered up” thefoul deeds of the child-molestingperverted priests go to sleep atnight? They should consider theinspired warning of the ApostlePaul: “Now the Spirit expresslysays that in latter times some willdepart from the faith, giving heedto deceiving spirits and doctrinesof demons… forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain fromfoods which God created to bereceived with thanksgiving bythose who believe and know thetruth” (1 Timothy 4:1, 3).

The hundreds—perhaps eventhousands—of top business exec-utives, lawyers and accountantswho as callous sinners thoughtthey could “get away” with bil-lions of dollars through thealleged deceptions practiced byEnron, Arthur Andersen anddozens of other major corpora-tions, will be called to accountbefore long! They will not onlyanswer to the courts of thisnation, they will eventually bebrought before the judgment ofAlmighty God!

For many of them have delib-erately stolen the money and eventhe livelihood of their employees

and investors in their companies.T h e E t e r n a l G o d s t ro n g l y condemns those who enrich them-selves by taking advantage of oth-ers: “Woe to you, scribes andPharisees, hypocrites! For youdevour widows’ houses, and for apretense make long prayers.Therefore you will receive greatercondemnation” (Matthew 23:14).

Sin automatically brings suf-fering. Some may even lose theirhomes, and be unable to feedtheir families. Many will be

unable to provide for their fami-lies’ future. Even those who are“better off” may find their fami-lies having to “do without” foryears to come. Their sons anddaughters may not be able to goto the schools that they hadplanned to attend because“Daddy lost his job.” Their littlechildren may not be able to go tothe summer camp that wasplanned, or get the new backyardswing set that had been prom-ised. Families may have to dowithout their annual vacationtrip because money is tight.

Employees who lose theirjobs because of the actions of cor-rupt executives may never trusttheir leaders again. For manyfamilies, their entire lives will bechanged because of the corruption

at the very top of American busi-ness. The hurt and disillusion-ment will last a lifetime. How cancorrupt executives sleep at night, knowing the profound sufferingtheir deceit and their actions havecaused? God’s Word tells us:“Good understanding givethfavour: but the way of transgres-sors is hard” (Proverbs 13:15,KJV).

Disobedience Is the CAUSE of Human Suffering

In this article, we cannoteven begin to recount the innu-merable areas of sin and sufferingin our professing “Christian”world. For we read almost dailyof the unremitting sorrow causedby those who sell and those whouse illegal drugs. And we read ofthose whose minds and bodiesare weakened and debilitatedbecause they drink too muchalcohol, smoke cigarettes orallow their mind and spirit to beperverted by the rotten purveyorsof pornography. Pornographersno doubt contribute greatly toheinous sexual crimes, and tocausing a whole generation ofyoung men to grow up with acheap and disgusting view ofwomanhood!

Many executives of the majortobacco companies are consid-ered “pillars” in their local com-munities; they sit on the boardsof their local churches and sur-round themselves with the sym-bols of success and respectability.Yet many of these same men haveknown for decades that their prod-uct often contributes directly tothe excruciating suffering and thepremature deaths of uncountedmillions of human beings!

Do we still wonder why thegreat God of creation is beginning

to “chasten” the American andBritish-descended peoples?

Although we have printedand produced more Bibles thanany people in history, we contin-ually break and smash the laws ofGod! Our religious, political andbusiness leaders—along with ournational sports and entertain-ment “idols”—have all con-

tributed to a culture of deceptionand hypocrisy. We have claimedto be a “Christian” nation. But wehave soundly rejected the clearteachings Jesus Christ gave in the“Sermon on the Mount.”

Jesus said: “Why do you callme Lord, Lord and not do thethings which I say?” (Luke 6:46).

Near the end of His famous“Sermon on the Mount,”(Matthew 5–7) wherein Heexplains clearly that Christiansmust obey the letter and the spir-it of the Ten Commandments,Jesus stated: “Not everyone whosays to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shallenter the kingdom of heaven, buthe who does the will of MyFather in heaven. Many will sayto Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Yourname, cast out demons in Yourname, and done many wonders inYour name?’ And then I willdeclare to them, ‘I never knewyou; depart from Me, you whopractice lawlessness!’” (Matthew7:21–23).

There is a cause for everyeffect. The breaking of God’sgreat spiritual law is the basic

cause of all human suffering.Once we have that one factstraight, and live by it, theamount of human suffering willbecome minuscule!

For after the GreatTribulation, which Jesus Christpredicted—after mankind hasbeen truly humbled and made“willing to listen”—the whole

world will be taught to obey theTen Commandments as a way oflife. Notice Isaiah’s inspiredprophecy: “Now it shall come topass in the latter days that themountain of the Lord’s houseshall be established on the top ofthe mountains, and shall be exalt-ed above the hills; and all nationsshall flow to it. Many people shallcome and say, ‘Come, and let usgo up to the mountain of theLord, to the house of the God ofJacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.’For out of Zion shall go forth thelaw, and the word of the Lordfrom Jerusalem. He shall judgebetween the nations, and rebukemany people; they shall beat theirswords into plowshares, and theirspears into pruning hooks; nationshall not lift up sword againstnation, neither shall they learnwar anymore” (Isaiah 2:2–4).

The prophet Jeremiah wasinspired by God to tell us: “Butthis is the covenant that I willmake with the house of Israel afterthose days, says the LORD: I willput My law in their minds, andwrite it on their hearts; and I will

be their God, and they shall be Mypeople” (Jeremiah 31:33).

Through real conversion, andthe gift of the Holy Spirit, God willactually put His spiritual law—theTen Commandments—into thehearts and minds of all His people. Then, in the coming millennialrule of Jesus Christ, there will be adepth of peace and joy that thisworld has never experienced.

As He said, God will “forgivetheir iniquity” (v. 34). The “wagesof sin” will be removed. God tellsHis people what they will experi-ence after they return from theGreat Tribulation and learn toobey His law and to truly followHis way: “Instead of your shameyou shall have double honor, andinstead of confusion they shallrejoice in their portion. Thereforein their land they shall possessdouble; everlasting joy shall betheirs” (Isaiah 61:7).

May the God of the Bible—the Creator who gives life andbreath to us all—help you toseek and to find the true religion. And may He give you the faithand the courage to act on thatTruth.

In Matthew 12:31–32, Jesus spoke of anunpardonable sin. What is this sin, andwhy can it not be forgiven?

The thought of being cut off from Godforever is an awful horror. Yet many sin-cere Christians have misunderstood thismatter and are needlessly worried.

In Matthew 12, a demon-possessed man wasbrought to Jesus for healing. After the demon wascast out, this man regained his eyesight and abili-ty to speak. A crowd witnessed this amazing mir-acle and exclaimed: “Could this be the Son ofDavid?” (Matthew 12:22–23). They thought Jesusmight be the prophesied Messiah, for such power“was never seen like this in Israel!” (9:32–33).

The Pharisees, seething with envy, tried to dis-credit Christ by saying that He performed this mir-acle “by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons”(12:24). Jesus responded with a somber warning:“Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemywill be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against theSpirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaksa word against the Son of Man, it will be forgivenhim; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, itwill not be forgiven him, either in this age or in theage to come” (vv. 31–32). Jesus held these uncon-verted Pharisees responsible for their attitudes.

The word “blaspheme” comes from the Greekblasphemeo—“to rail against, to speak contemptu-ously of God or of sacred things” (Vine’sExpository Dictionary, p. 69). Jesus called it blas-phemy to “speak against” the Son of Man and theHoly Spirit. Why was blasphemy forgivableagainst Jesus Christ, but unforgivable against theHoly Spirit?

Jesus came in the flesh as a common Jew ofhis day—a humble carpenter’s son. The averageperson could easily misunderstand who He was.Physically, He did not appear special or unique(Isaiah 53:2). Yet no one—not even the resentfulPharisees—could mistake the power of the Holy

Spirit. Nicodemus, a Pharisee, knew that Jesuswas a teacher from God. He knew God’s powerwas with Christ (John 3:1–2)! The multitudes, too, loudly acknowledged this truth that thePharisees tried to deny.

In spite of knowing better, the Pharisees attrib-uted Christ’s miracles to the evil work ofBeelzebub, another name for Satan the Devil(Revelation 12:9; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians2:2). The Pharisees’ actions insulted the verypower of God, calling it “an unclean spirit” (Mark3:28–30).

The Apostle Paul also warns Christians aboutdangers leading to the unpardonable sin: “For it isimpossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and havebecome partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tast-ed the good word of God and the powers of the ageto come, if they fall away, to renew them again torepentance, since they crucify again for them-selves the Son of God, and put Him to an openshame” (Hebrews 6:4–6).

The unpardonable sin involves “falling awayfrom the truth” after experiencing the “good wordof God” and God’s power! Jesus explained that ittook a greater power to “enter a strong man’shouse and plunder his goods” (Matthew 12:29).That power was none other than God’s Holy Spirit! The Pharisees had observed firsthand many won-derful miracles performed by the power of God’sSpirit, so they were in danger of willfully rejectingnot only Jesus Christ, but also the very power ofGod that transforms people into the Sons of God(Romans 8:15). They were about to “sin willfully”(Hebrews 10:26), irreparably searing their con-sciences. The Pharisees needed to change the waythey were thinking before it was too late!

True Christians must carefully watch whatthey allow into their minds. They desire to be ledby God’s Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14) in order tobring “every thought into captivity to the obedi-ence of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

hy should anyone care how Christianity came to England,Scotland, Ireland and Wales—especially if they do not even live

there? Church history is probably the last subject many people would

choose to look into. Many think of history as a dull recounting of dates, deadpeople and past events irrelevant to our times. They wonder: “What relevancecould it possibly have to our lives today?” This is a dangerous attitude.

It is not surprising that few understand the significance of the incrediblereligious drama that has played out over centuries in Europe’s western isles, because critical parts of the story have been lost, forgotten or deliberatelyobscured! Most people today have only heard a deliberately slanted version ofthis epic struggle, because modern scholars discount or ignore surprisingpieces of evidence that paint a very different picture of the first arrival ofChristianity in the West.

Yet the coming of true Christianity to Europe’s western isles—and what hap-pened to the true gospel of Jesus Christ—is a remarkable story. It can be verifiedin recorded histories accessible in many libraries and on the Internet. Those

records—togetherwith key facts andperspectives revealedin the Bible—holdvital lessons for ustoday. The true histo-ry of Europe’s west-ern isles also shedslight on a deadly seri-ous contest that ismoving toward a cli-max, involving notonly human beingsbut powerful spiritu-al forces. When youdiscover what hap-pened, you can beginto understand wherecurrent events areleading—events thatare destined to affectthe entire world inthe not-too-distantfuture. historian at the University of York, states that “theimpression given by Luke [in the book of Acts] ofan orderly and controlled diffusion… is mislead-ing… it is reasonably clear that Christianity spreadeast and west both quickly and anarchically, withoutovert strategy or leadership” (The Conversion ofEurope, p. 14). Catholic theologians John Walshand Thomas Bradley write: “Christianity enteredIreland, presumably in the fourth and fifth cen-turies, by a slow and unplanned infiltration” (TheStory of the Irish Church, p. 1). Such statements aremisleading, and ignore obvious facts of Scriptureand history.

The Bible reveals that God does not operate in acapricious and haphazard manner. The Apostle Paulstates: “God is not the author of confusion [disorder]but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints” (1Corinthians 14:33). To spread the Gospel, Jesuscalled and trained 12 disciples (Luke 6:12–16). Theywere to go first to “the lost sheep of the house ofIsrael” and later to the Gentiles (Matthew 10:5–6,18). Paul was sent to the Gentiles and the children ofIsrael, while Peter was sent primarily to the Jews—ofJudea and also of the Dispersion (Acts 9:15; Galatians2:7–8). When Philip preached in Samaria, he coordi-nated his activities with the headquarters church inJerusalem (Acts 8:5–14). The Apostle Paul followedthis same pattern (Galatians 1:18–19; 2:1–2). Thebook of Acts shows that God guided the spread of thegospel by supernatural means (Acts 10; 13:1–2;16:6–10), and that He provided the strategy and lead-ership that directed the spread of early Christianity.

Later the Apostle Paul sent preachers and teachersto specific areas: Tychicus to Ephesus, Crescens toGalatia [the Gauls of central Asia Minor] and Titus toDalmatia and Crete (Ephesians 6:21–22; 2 Timothy4:10; Titus 1:5). This harmonizes with what later his-tories record about the organized movements of theApostles. Eusebius, whose writings represent the onlysurviving account of the crucial first three centuries ofthe early Church, states: “Thomas… was chosen forParthia, Andrew for Scythia, John for Asia”(Ecclesiastical History, Bk. 3, chap. 1). Cressy, anOxford graduate and Benedictine monk in the 17thcentury, wrote that the Apostles divided by lot regionsof the world for preaching the gospel (Church Historyof Britanny, vol. 4, Bk. 1, chap. 6). While it is possibleto conclude from preserved fragments of history thatChristianity spread in a chaotic fashion, such a con-clusion conflicts with what the Bible and history actu-ally record.

Evidence Ignored

Modern scholars’ statements about the spread ofearly Christianity typically reflect a similar mindsetbased on similar assumptions. Historian RichardFletcher writes: “The spread of Christianity toAlexandria and beyond along the coast of NorthAfrica to Carthage has left no narrative trace of anykind” (Fletcher, p. 14). Anglican historian PowelDawley comments: “Precisely how or when the firstChristian community in Britain received its start isimpossible to tell… the spread of the Gospel to thisnorthwestern limit of the Roman Empire has beenlost beyond recovery” (Chapters in Church History, p.93). Irish writer Liam de Paor states: “There is no wayof knowing how long there had been Christians… inIreland before the [Roman] church began its greatorganizational drive in the fifth century” (Milestonesin Irish History, pp. 23, 30).

Regrettably, these statements convey an erro-neous impression of what can be known about themovements of the Apostles, and about the arrival oftrue Christianity in Europe’s western isles. Clement, the fourth bishop of the church in Rome, wrote inthe late first century that the Apostle Paul, “afterpreaching in the east and west… taught righteous-ness to the whole world, and came to the extremelimit of the west” (Epistle to the Corinthians, chap. 5,in Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol. 9, p. 231). Some thinkthe phrase “the extreme limit of the west” refers toRome, others believe it refers to Spain or Britain. Yetany map of the Roman Empire in the first centuryshows that the Britannic Isles—not Rome or Spain—represent the extremity of the west. Gildas, a Britishmonk in the 6th century, stated that “the island ofBritain lies virtually at the end of the world, towardsthe west and north-west” (The Ruin of Britain, Bk. 3,chap. 1, Winterbottom, ed., p. 16).

Tertullian, bishop of Carthage in the second cen-tury, states: “The regions of Britain which have neverbeen penetrated by the Romans [southwest England,Wales and Scotland] have received the religion ofChrist” (Def. Fidei, p. 179). Eusebius, bishop ofCaesarea in the early 300s, records that “the apostlespassed beyond the ocean to the Isles called theBritish Isles” (Demonstratio Evangelica, Bk. 3, chap.5). Eusebius had access to a substantial library atCaesarea, which contained sources that have sincebeen lost. Theodoret, bishop of Cyprus in Syria(circa 430AD) states that “Paul, liberated from hisfirst captivity at Rome, preached the Gospel to the

Britons and others in the West… and the Cymry [theWelsh]” (D. Civ. Gracae Off., Bk. 9). Dorotheous, bishop of Tyre, stated (in about 300AD) that“Aristobulus, whom Paul saluted [Romans 16:10]was bishop of Britain” and that Simon Zelotes alsocame to Britain (Synopsis de Apostol., Synops. 9, 23).Gildas says that the coming of Christianity to Britain“happened first, as we know, in the last years of theemperor Tiberius [14–37AD]” (The Ruin of Britain, p.18). This means that Christianity arrived in Britainno later than 37AD—within fiveyears after Christ’s crucifixion.Gildas also refers to the Britonsas God’s “latter-day Israel”(ibid., p. 28).

Some of the most respectedauthorities in previous cen-turies have accepted theseearly reports as trustworthyaccounts of history. JamesUssher, Archbishop of Irelandand one of the greatest scholarsof the 17th century, presentsconsiderable evidence thatJames, Simon Zelotes, SimonPeter, the Apostle Paul and others brought ApostolicChristianity to Europe’s western isles in the first cen-tury (The Whole Works of James Ussher, vol. 5, chap.1, Erlington). Robert Parsons, an English Jesuit andOxford scholar, asserted in his 17th century workThe Three Conversions of England that the Apostlesfirst brought Christianity to the island, and that “theChristian religion began in Britain within fifty yearsof Christ’s Ascension” (p. 14). Modern scholars’claims that the spread of Christianity to Europe’swestern isles “left no narrative trace” and that it hasbeen “lost beyond recovery” are simply not true! Suchstatements ignore recorded evidence that is readilyavailable to anyone who cares to check the sources.

Facts vs. Fables

But what happened to the true Gospel that theApostles brought to Europe’s western isles in the firstcentury? How accurate are the widely accepted tra-ditions that Patrick converted the Irish in the 400sand that Augustine brought Christianity to Englandin the 600s? When you dig beneath the surface ofmodern assumptions, you find scholars making veryinteresting admissions. Irish Catholic historiansrelate that “traditionally… Saint Patrick has been

credited with converting the entire Irish race frompaganism in the very short period between 432 and461… however, we have to admit that there werecertainly Christians in Ireland before Patrickarrived… and that the saint worked as an evangelistonly in part of the island [the north]” (Walsh andBradley, p. 1). Irish writer Liam de Paor states that“Ireland was not converted by one man [Patrick]… itmay be that Christianity reached the west country[of Britain] and the southern Irish sea virtually inde-

pendent of the Roman sys-tem, at a very early date…centuries before Patrick”(Paor, pp. 21, 23). There aretraditions that the ApostleJames preached the gospel inIreland before returning toJerusalem, where he wasmartyred (see MacManus,The Story of the Irish Race, p.103). The widely acceptednotion that Patrick firstbrought Christianity toIreland is a fable—not a fact.Numerous historical sources

state that the Apostles brought true Christianity toIreland four centuries before Patrick!

The tradition that Augustine converted Englandto the true faith in the 600s looks quite differentwhen the facts of history are known. Bede, an Anglo-Saxon monk living in northeast England in the 700s,wrote what has been called the primary sourcebookfor this period: The Ecclesiastical History of theEnglish Nation. Bede was a highly respected scholar, but he has also been called a “medieval spin doctor”because he tended to gloss over subjects that did notfit the story he was telling. As a Saxon, he glorifiesthe Saxons and puts down the Britons. He was alsoan enthusiastic supporter of Roman Catholicism. Hesays nothing of the Apostles coming to Britain andIreland, only briefly mentions other Christians pre-ceding Augustine in early Britain, and instead focus-es on Augustine as if he were the “bringer of the truefaith” to the English nation.

However, when you read Bede’s account carefully,it becomes obvious that British bishops already func-tioning on the island would have nothing to do withAugustine or the religion that he represented. Theywould not accept the Roman Catholic observance ofEaster, or method of baptism (infant baptism hadbecome universal by that time), or the authority that

Whitby, an ancient fishing port at the mouth ofthe River Esk, hosted the English synod that in664AD renounced Apostolic Christianity infavor of Roman doctrine.

Rome gave Augustine to be its Archbishop ofEngland. Augustine told the British bishops: “You actin many particulars contrary to our custom, or ratherthe custom of the universal church” (Bede, Bk. 2,chap. 2). Bede comments about the “errors of theBritons” and says that the “Scots in no way differ fromthe Britons in their behavior” (ibid., chap. 4).Describing why the Scottish bishops, at a confronta-tion at Witby in 664AD, refused to adopt the RomanEaster, Bede reports that they followed an ancientpractice—“the same which St. John the Evangelist, the disciple of our Lord, with all the churches overwhich he presided, is recorded to have observed”(ibid., chap. 25).

Bede’s account reveals that the Scottish bishopswere actually observing the biblical Passover (at thebeginning of Nisan 14, shortly after the sunset endingNisan 13) and Days of Unleavened Bread (seeLeviticus 23:4–8). The Scots’ appeal to scripturalpractice and Apostolic tradition was countered with areference to then-current customs of the RomanChurch, and ridicule that “the Picts and the Britons, who foolishly, in these two remote islands of theworld… oppose all the rest of the universe” (ibid., Bk.2, chap. 25). Yet this same battle had raged severalcenturies earlier in Asia Minor where the followers ofJohn (called Quartodecimians) were excommunicat-ed by a bishop in Rome for observing the Passover onNisan 14 instead of the Roman Easter. Following theconfrontation at Whitby, the remnants of ApostolicChristianity retreated to Scotland, Wales and south-west England as the Saxons and eventually moreBritons embraced Roman Catholicism. In Europe’swestern isles, the teachings of Apostolic Christianitywere pushed aside by a different gospel emanatingfrom Rome.

How Truth Was Lost

But why has the truth about the first arrival ofChristianity in Europe’s western isles—and the fateof the true Gospel there—been obscured and forgot-ten? Why are so many clear historical recordsbrushed aside? There are a number of reasons. TheBible reveals that true Christianity is in a strugglewith evil spiritual forces: Satan, his demons andwhomever they can influence (Ephesians 6:10–12).Secular historians and liberal theologians do not takethis spiritual dimension seriously, yet it explainsmuch of what has happened to the true Gospel.Satan, as the adversary of God (Isaiah 14:12–15), has

sought to disrupt and derail the plan of God from thevery beginning. Satan was behind the efforts to killJesus and end His ministry (Matthew 2:1–18;Matthew 26:1–5; John 8:37–44; John 13:2). Satanalso attempts to subvert true Christianity by moti-vating professing Christians to promote heretical andsubtly misleading ideas (see Acts 20:29–30; 2 Peter2:1–3).

Faulty human reasoning also played a role inobscuring the true Gospel. The Bible explains that“there is a way that seems right to a man, but its endis the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12). Over the cen-turies, some thought it reasonable to allow formerpagans to continue their favorite religious practices,as long as they did so in a different spirit, because thismight facilitate their acceptance of “Christianity.”This is why the pagan celebrations of Easter,Christmas, saints’ days, image worship, and prayersfor the dead were sanctioned by the Church at Rome.Yet the Bible actually condemns these practices (seeExodus 20:1–7; Deuteronomy 12:29–32; Jeremiah10:1–5). As these customs were grafted into thechurch, true Apostolic Christianity was eventuallydisplaced by pagan practices.

Human prejudice also played a part in obscuringthe truth. In the aftermath of the first-century Jewishrevolt against Roman authority, religious practicesthat appeared Jewish—Sabbath observance, keepingthe biblical Holy Days and following biblical dietarylaws—became objects of scorn and revulsion, eventhough Jesus, His disciples and the early Churchobserved these teachings (see Luke 4:16; Acts 17:2;18:21). It took centuries of determined effort tostamp out Apostolic teachings, as theQuartodecimian controversies in Asia Minor andEngland, regarding the time and manner of observ-ing the Passover, illustrate. In more recent times,Archbishop Ussher’s calculation that the earth wascreated in 4004BC (which holds no credence today)provides modern scholars a reason to discount evi-dence he collected demonstrating that the Apostlesbrought the Gospel to Europe’s western isles in thefirst century.

There is an additional reason why the truths aboutthe first arrival of Christianity in the West, and abouttrue Apostolic Christianity, have been obscured andforgotten. As historian Fletcher deftly observes, “histo-ry is written by the winners” (Fletcher, p. 75). Heexplains that in the theological disputes that raged overthe centuries, those individuals or groups who woundup on the losing side—whether right or wrong—were

Page 14: November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 · November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 Regional Offices Tomorrow’s World® (USPS #020-391) is published bimonthly by the Living

“systematically vilified, their writings hunted downand destroyed” (ibid.)—which is what happened inBritain and Ireland. The British bishops who opposedAugustine and the teachings of Roman Christianitywere labeled “perfidious [treacherous] men” and hun-dreds were murdered (Bede, Bk. 2, chap. 2). TodayBede’s biased history is widely available in English, yetUssher’s text—called “the most exact account” of theplanting of the British church—is available almostexclusively in Latin, if it can be found at all. It is nowonder fundamental truths have been forgotten.

Does It Matter Today?

We can learn important lessons from the epicstruggle that has occurred in Europe’s western isles.True Christianity spread to the West for a reason. The Apostles traveled to the isles in the sea becauseJesus commissioned them to go to the “lost sheep ofthe house of Israel” (Matthew 10:6). The Anglo-Saxon-Celtic peoples are Israelites who, over manycenturies, migrated from their ancient homeland inthe Middle East to these islands, where they inher-ited specific blessings promised to their forefathersAbraham, Isaac and Jacob (for more on this vitalkey to prophecy, please request our free bookletWhat’s Ahead for America and Britain?).

However, with those blessings came God-givenresponsibilities and warnings! God intended His cho-sen people to be examples of a way of life that othernations would notice and want to follow(Deuteronomy 4:1–10). The Israelites were to teachtheir children God’s way of life, and were not to com-promise any of His instructions. They were warnednot to forget God or His laws and instructions, lestthey reap serious consequences (Deuteronomy4:15–28). Yet God’s “latter day Israelites” have for-gotten the truth, and have chosen to believe in fables(2 Timothy 4:4). In recent decades, the world’s schol-ars have tended to dismiss what history records—and what the Bible reveals. They obscure the truth ofhistory, and promote misleading ideas about thecoming of Christianity to Europe’s western isles (2Peter 2:1–3; 3:1–9). As a result, the peoples ofEngland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales simply do notknow the truth about their own identity and theirown history!

Corrupted by pagan ideas, and cut off from asound biblical base, organized religion in Britain andIreland—as in many other Israelite countries—isfloundering and in decline. Many today have forgot-

ten—or do not even know—the true God, and areturning to substitutes in the occult or the “cult ofself.” The British especially have lost their God-givensense of mission, and are pursuing personal pleas-ures. America and Britain, instead of protecting andproclaiming the truth of God to the world, are con-suming and exporting the corrupting values of vio-lence, greed and licentious sex through the media andpersonal example. We are fulfilling the ancientprophecies uttered by Moses that “after my death youwill become utterly corrupt, and turn aside from theway which I have commanded you; and evil will befallyou in the latter days, because you will do evil in thesight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger throughthe work of your hands” (Deuteronomy 31:29).

Unless we drastically change our present course,we will reap the results of our hedonistic behavior. Longago, God warned the people of Israel: “If you do notobey Me… I will set my face against you… I will evenappoint terror over you… I will break the pride of yourpower… I will bring a sword against you… I will layyour cities waste… the LORD will scatter you among thepeoples… where the LORD will drive you… in the latterdays” (Leviticus 26:14–33; Deuteronomy 4:23–30).

What is sobering about these prophecies is thatthey are dual. They not only applied to ancient Israel;they are applicable to God’s latter-day Israelites The“Lost Ten Tribes” of Israel are now residing, in part, among the British-descended nations of the world. Thelessons of history and the prophecies of the Bible arenot just details about the past; they are extremely rele-vant to our times today. We need to rediscover whathas been lost, obscured and forgotten. We need towake up before it is too late. This is why Jesus said:“repent and believe in the [true] gospel” (Mark1:14–15).

Le Pen once called Nazi gaschambers a “detail in the historyof World War II.”

The rise of European anti-Semitism is frightening someobservers who see conditionshauntingly similar to what transpired in the 1930s. Recentacts of violence and vandalismagainst Jews throughout Europeh a v e b e e n c o m p a r e d t o“Kristallnacht”—Nov. 9, 1938—when synagogues in Germany andAustria were burned and Jewishstores were looted. So much glasswas smashed that the Germansdubbed it “Crystal Night.” Itmarked the beginning of thedeportation of European Jews toconcentration camps, leading ulti-mately to the extermination of sixmillion Jews in the Holocaust.

In a syndicated column pub-lished at the end of April, GeorgeWill observed: “anti-Semitism is astronger force in world affairsthan it has been since it went intoa remarkably brief eclipse afterthe liberation of the Nazi extermi-nation camps in 1945. The UnitedNations, supposedly an embodi-ment of lessons learned from thewar that ended in 1945, is nowthe instrument for lending spuri-ous legitimacy to the anti-Semites’war against the Jewish statefounded by survivors of that war.”

Will noted that anti-Semitismhas proven to be “the mostdurable and successful ideology”of the 20th century. “Anti-Semitism is not directed againstthe behavior of the Jews butagainst the existence of the Jews,”Will wrote, noting that AdolphHitler’s primary objective duringNazi Germany’s “Third Reich” wasthe destruction of European Jewry.

“If the percentage of theworld’s population that wasJewish in the era of the RomanEmpire were Jewish today, therewould be 200 million Jews. Thereare 13 million. Five million areclustered in an embattled salient[fortification] on the easternshore of the Mediterranean, facinghundreds of millions of enemies.”

In an April 12 column postedon WorldNetDaily.com duringHolocaust Remembrance Week,Ellen Ratner noted how currentconditions in Europe resembleconditions when Hitler’s regimebrutally began to persecuteEuropean Jews.

“Today, Jews are under attackonce again. And remarkably, thevillains look much the same as in1938. The European Communityhas not spoken out against thenew wave of anti-Semitismsweeping Europe,” Ratner wrote.

“We cannot allow Europeans toforget that they have been party tothe world’s worst genocides. Theirrefusal to condemn anti-Semitismin their own nations demonstratesnot only this short-term memorybut also the deep roots of anti-Jewish sentiment in Europe. AsEuropean leaders unilaterally con-demn Israeli actions and stand idlyby as anti-Semitic feeling swells inEuropean nations, it makesEuropean Jews understandablynervous, and Israelis even more so.”

In May, the Simon WiesenthalCenter, a Jewish organization ded-icated to Holocaust remembranceand education, sharply criticizedthe United Nations for condemn-ing Israeli military actions butremaining silent about “homicidebombings” that have killed hun-dreds of Israeli citizens.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, thecenter’s associate dean, wrote:“The U.N. General Assembly has

become an international rubberstamp for Israel bashing, terror-ism and the mass murder of Jews. The Wiesenthal Center also con-demns the abstention of the mem-bers of the European Union, anorganization that has yet to findits moral compass when it comesto Israel and the Middle East.”

Abraham H. Foxman, Anti-Defamation League director, writ-ing in the March 1 Jerusalem Post, said that he is convinced Jews “arefacing a threat as great, if notgreater, to the safety and securityof the Jewish people than we facedin the 1930s.” He noted that 40percent of the world’s Jewish pop-ulation is centered in the tiny geo-graphic location of modern Israel.

As Rep. Richard Gephardt, D-Mo., declared at a massive pro-Israel rally in Washington, DC, onApril 15, more than 450 Israeliswere killed and more than 4,000wounded in attacks the previous18 months. “For a country the sizeof Israel, these numbers are stag-gering. Proportionally, this equatesto more than 21,000 Americandeaths and over 200,000 Americaninjuries,” Gephardt said.

At that same rally, former U.S.Education Secretary WilliamBennett noted that the U.S. andIsrael are engaged in the samewar against terrorism.

“Israel rallied for us onSeptember 11. Their flags were athalf-mast. By contrast, thePalestinian terrorists had theirrallies that day, too. They honkedtheir horns at American destruc-tion,” Bennett said, emphasizingt h e s u b s t a n t i a l d i f f e re n c ebetween the only democracy inthe Middle East fighting for sur-vival and its opponents strivingto push it into the sea.

The specter of anti-Semitismhas grown steadily louder in

recent decades because it has notbeen challenged, Bennett said.“What we are seeing today, whatIsrael is feeling today, was not sup-posed to happen again. When youlook at Palestinian and other Arabmaps of the region, there is noIsrael. When you read the state-ments of martyrdomfrom terrorists, youhave to realize that it isno longer just thenation Israel that is tar-geted; it is now also thepeople Israel. And itmust stop.”

In February, aGallup poll of nearly10,000 people in nineI s l a m i c c o u n t r i e sshowed 53 percent hadan unfavorable view ofthe U.S., and 61 percentdid not believe Arabsperpetrated the Sept. 11terrorist attacks.

Israeli-American Ties

Appropriating about $3 bil-lion a year in aid to Israel, theU.S. has been the greatest guaran-tor of the tiny Middle Eastnation’s security and existence. As a result, many Muslims whohate Israel also despise the U.S.with the same vehemence.

The terrorists behind the Sept.11 attacks on New York andWashington were retaliating inlarge part against U.S. support forIsrael. Well aware of its symbolism, they targeted New York not onlybecause of its status as the world’sfinancial and media capital, butalso because it is home to thelargest concentration of Jews out-side Israel.

On May 2, Congress passedresolutions of support for theJewish state, and endorsed its

recent military campaign intoPalestinian territory. Both Houseand Senate measures said the U.S.and Israel are “now engaged in acommon struggle against terror-ism.” The House passed a pro-Israel resolution by 352–21; theSenate by 94–2.

Rabbi DanielLapin emphasizesthat Jews haveimmigra ted to a n d s e t t l e d i nwhich-ever coun-tries were occupy-ing world history’scenter stage formore than 2,000years. “When twoworld wars finallyleft America as the mightiest eco-nomic and mili-t a r y p o w e r i n the wor ld , theAmerican Jewish

community achieved maturity andemerged as the healthiest andwealthiest of all Jewish communi-ties,” Lapin wrote (America’s RealWar, p. 113).

“Nowhere else in the world, and at no other time in Jewish his-tory, have Jews lived in such com-fort and safety for such an extend-ed period of time. The hospitalitythat Jews have enjoyed in Americais unparalleled... No country hasbeen a more stalwart friend ofIsrael than America; no other soci-ety has ever been more hospitableto its Jewish population. It is hardto think of another nation inwhich a Jewish community hasenjoyed a longer period of tran-quility and affluence.”

In an April 10 speech to theU.S. Senate, former Israeli PrimeMinister Benjamin Netanyahuwarned that if America compro-mises its principles, the war on

terror will be undermined. “Thequestion many in my country arenow asking is this: will Americaapply its principles consistentlyand win this war, or will it selec-tively abandon those principlesand thereby ultimately lose thewar?” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu noted that the400–plus Israelis killed in 18months in terrorist attacks equaleda per capita toll equivalent to half adozen September 11s. This car-nage is unprecedented, he said, warning that the U.S. also facesindiscriminate killing of citizensby terrorists on its own soil.

“It is only a matter of timebefore suicide bombers will ter-rorize your cities. If notdestroyed, this madness willstrike in your buses, in yoursupermarkets, in your pizza par-lors, in your cafes. Eventually, these human bombs will supple-ment their murderous force withsuitcases equipped with devicesof mass death that could makethe horrors of September 11 paleby comparison.”

Netanyahu said it was pre-dictable that Arab dictatorshipswould condemn Israel’s right todefend itself. “That today aEurope which 60 years agorefused to lift a finger to save mil-lions of Jews has turned its col-lective back on the Jewish state isdownright shameful. But myfriends, I must admit. I expectedno better from them.”

The Bible identifies Jewish,American and British-descendedpeoples as modern descendants ofsome of the 12 tribes of ancientIsrael. ments in the 20th century andtheir destiny is inextricablybound. They together face the riseof a powerful, adversarial modernRoman Empire in Europe, whichhistorically has opposed Jewishand Anglo-American interests.

Judah in the Last Days

The term “Jew” is derivedfrom “Judah”—one of the 12 sonsof Jacob or Israel. Genesis 49includes a remarkable prophecyabout what would befall Judah“in the last days.” It foresees theJews possessing a powerful mili-tary force respected in theWestern world.

Jacob told his son: “Judah, youare he whom your brothers shallpraise; your hand shall be on theneck of your enemies; your father’schildren shall bow down beforeyou. Judah is a lion’s whelp; fromthe prey, my son, you have goneup. He bows down, he lies down asa lion; and as a lion, who shallrouse him?” (Genesis 49:8–9).

Jacob also prophesied thatthe Messiah would be Jewish.“The scepter shall not departfrom Judah, nor a lawgiver frombetween his feet, until Shilohcomes; and to Him shall be theobedience of the people. Bindinghis donkey to the vine, and hisdonkey’s colt to the choice vine,he washed his garments in wineand his clothes in the blood ofgrapes” (vv. 10–11)

Jesus Christ explicitly ful-filled this prophecy regarding Hiscrucifixion, as well as numerousother Old Testament propheciesabout the Messiah. The ApostlePaul wrote: “For it is evident thatour Lord arose from Judah”(Hebrews 7:14). Christ’s genealo-gy confirms that He was Jewish(Matthew 1:1–17, Luke 3:23–38)

As the Bible predicted: “He cameto His own, and His own did notreceive Him.” (John 1:11) Eventoday, most Jewish people do notrecognize Jesus as the Christ, andcontinue to await the Messiah.

The prophet Zechariah hasmuch to say about the Jewishpeople’s future in the context ofChrist’s return. Throughout hisbook, Zechariah alludes to JesusChrist’s first coming as did Jacob(Zechariah 9:9; 11:12–13; 12:10,13:6). When He returns, Christwill save the Jewish people fromabsolute annihilation!

An international controversywill become so intense thatarmies, spearheaded by aEuropean superpower, will sur-round Jerusalem—which Jewsconsider their eternal capital—ina siege that will prove devastatingfor the grossly outnumberedJewish population.

“Behold, I will make Jerusalema cup of drunkenness to all thesurrounding peoples, when theylay siege against Judah andJerusalem. And it shall happen inthat day that I will make Jerusalema very heavy stone for all peoples;all who would heave it away willsurely be cut in pieces, though allnations of the earth are gatheredagainst it” (Zechariah 12:2–3).

Just as Christ forewarned, when we see Jerusalem surround-ed by armies, we will know thatits desolation is near. At thattime, He will return powerfully toprevent another genocide of theJewish people (Luke 21:20–27).

The Bible indicates thatJewish leaders will be a conster-nation to other nations whenthey efuse to be bullied, especial-ly regarding Jerusalem. These“governors of Judah” will be likedevouring flames to their neigh-bors (Zechariah 12:6).

The Bible shows thatEuropeans and Arabs, who haveshared anti-Semitism for cen-turies, will for a short time com-bine their forces against the Jewsand other Israelites before JesusChrist intervenes to halt WorldWar III (Psalm 83:1–8). Then, the European power will occupyEgypt and will dominate certainof the Arab nations (Daniel11:40–43).

Although the Jews haverejected Him as their Messiah,Jesus Christ will rescue themfrom genocide worse than theNazi-era Holocaust. “The LORD

will save the tents of Judah first.…In that day the LORD will defendthe inhabitants of Jerusalem.... Itshall be in that day that I willseek to destroy all the nationsthat come against Jerusalem”(Zechariah 12:7–9).

The Jewish people will finallyrecognize Jesus Christ as theirMessiah, who will halt militaryconflict in the Middle East, andanti-Semitism around the world, once and for all, establishing akingdom ensuring peace, harmonyand love among all nations!

The world today faces serious problems—includ-ing terrorism, ethnic strife, crumbling moral founda-tions and environmental destruction—that threatenthe future of human civilization. In the face of theseglobal challenges, religious leaders of the world areseeking common ground. Their immediate goal is towork together to battle the demons of violence, war, poverty, hunger, social inequality, injustice, material-ism and ecological devastation. The ultimate goal ofthis ecumenical endeavor is to establish one worldcommunion that brings all churches—and eventual-ly all religions—together in a “civilization of love”that embraces all God’s children. This is a noble goal. But will it succeed, or will this well-meaning attemptcome to a sudden and unexpected end? Surprising asit may seem, the modern ecumenical movement—and its outcome—were prophesied long ago in thepages of your Bible. Those prophecies are comingalive today!

The last decade of the 20th century witnessed sev-eral remarkable developments on the religious front. In1994, Catholic and Protestant leaders signed a ground-breaking agreement titled Evangelicals and CatholicsTogether, which called for closer cooperation on socialand cultural issues of common concern. A year later,Pope John Paul II issued an important encyclical, ThatThey May Be One, to promote the cause of “Christianunity.” In 1997, four major American church denomi-nations—the United Church of Christ, the ReformedChurch of America, the Presbyterian Church (USA)and the Lutheran Church agreed to full communion—ending centuries of division.

Perhaps the most significant development—called by some the “ecumenical event of the centu-ry”—occurred in 1999, when Lutherans and RomanCatholics signed a historic accord on the doctrine ofjustification, the very issue that triggered theProtestant Reformation and shattered the “unity” ofwestern “Christendom.” This landmark agreementwas signed in Augsburg, Germany on August 31,

1999—Reformation Day in the Lutheran churches—exactly 482 years after Martin Luther nailed his 95Theses onto the door of a church in Wittenberg,Germany. Christian Century magazine states that thisagreement was “a dramatic step toward resolving a16th century dispute that was at the heart of theProtestant break from the Roman Catholic Church”(October 27, 1999, p. 1,019). Fifteen months later, inJanuary of 2001, the Lutheran and Episcopal church-es ended centuries of division by signing an accord toshare clergy, churches and mission work. These his-toric agreements are part of a broad-based ecumenicalmovement that has “inspired extraordinary dialoguesand built bridges across ancient ecclesiastical andtheological canyons” (Denver Post, Nov. 1, 1999).That movement seemed to gather steam as professingChristians anticipated what they considered the2,000-year anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Pope John Paul II has been a prime mover in thepush to unite the “Christian world.” Under his aus-pices, the Roman Catholic Church is engaged in dia-logues with Jews and numerous Protestant groups.High on the Roman Catholic priority list is an accordwith the Eastern Orthodox Church that holds swayover much of Eastern Europe—once a major part ofWestern “Christendom”. In 1982, John Paul II becamethe first pontiff to visit Britain since the Reformation. In October 2000, he received Queen Elizabeth II in aprivate audience in Rome. In her remarks the Queenstated: “I trust we shall continue to advance along thepath which leads to Christian unity” (San BernardinoSun, Oct. 18, 2000). The Pope commented that “therecan be no turning back from the ecumenical goal wehave set for ourselves in obedience to the Lord’s com-mand” (BBC News, Oct. 17, 2000).

In January 2002, John Paul II hosted a historicgathering of leaders representing the major religions ofthe world in the Italian town of Assisi, birthplace of themedieval monk known as Saint Francis. As they prayedtogether, the pontiff urged religious leaders to con-

The Trap of Ecumenism

Page 21: November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 · November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 Regional Offices Tomorrow’s World® (USPS #020-391) is published bimonthly by the Living

demn violence and war and work in unity to promotepeace. Ironically, at the close of a remarkable ecumeni-cal decade, the Vatican office in charge of doctrineissued an official document declaring that the Catholicfaith is the sole path to salvation, that non-Christianfaiths are “gravely deficient” in their beliefs, thatProtestant churches are not “sister churches” and that“the one holy catholic and apostolic Church [Rome] isnot sister but mother of all the particular [Christian]churches (Los Angeles Times, Sept. 6, 2000).

Just what is going on? What is the real signifi-cance of the dramatic push toward so-called“Christian unity” and the harmonization of theworld’s religions? Why is it occurring now, andwhere will it lead?

In a remarkable prophecy given more than 2,700years ago, the prophet Isaiah describes the judg-ment of a mysterious woman called a “daugh-ter of Babylon… the Lady of Kingdoms”who says in her heart “I am, and there isno one else besides me; I shall not sit awidow, nor shall I know the loss ofchildren” (Isaiah 47:1–11). InBible prophecy, a womanoften symbolizes a church. In this case, the spiritual rootsof the woman are linked to theancient practices of pagan Babylon. She asserts that she is like no one else(i.e., that she is the one true church) andthat she will make an effort to regain her lostor separated children (daughters). It is no coin-cidence that the recent document issued by theVatican echoes these very same sentiments.

In the book of Revelation, the Apostle John refersto this same mysterious woman who “glorifies her-self… lived luxuriously” and says “I sit as a queen, and am no widow” (Revelation 18:7). However, Johnreveals this woman is called “the great harlot… themother of harlots… with whom the kings of the earthhave committed fornication, and the inhabitants ofthe earth were made drunk with the wine of her for-

nication” (Revelation 17:1–6). This strong languagedescribes a great false church that has spawneddaughter churches, all of which are deeply involvedwith the politics of this world and have spread falsereligious teachings around the globe. There is onlyone church on Earth, which also sits on seven hills, fitting the description of this mysterious woman (seeRevelation 17:9). Bible prophecy indicates that this“mother church” will be actively involved in anattempt to bring her “daughters” back into her fami-ly just before the return of Jesus Christ (seeRevelation 17:5; 19:2).

But what will ultimately convince the skepticalProtestants, the wary Eastern Orthodox and mem-bers of the world’s other religions that the leader inRome is the one true servant of God? The ApostleJohn records that a “lamb-like” individual (a leader

falsely professing Christianity) will come, who“performs great signs, so that he even makes

fire come down from heaven… and hedeceives those who dwell on the earth by

those signs” (Revelation 13:13–14).The Apostle Paul calls this person

“the man of sin” who receivesmiracle-working power, from

Satan, that convinces unsus-pecting people to believe lies, lead-

ing to a falling away from biblicaltruth (2 Thessalonians 2:1–12). Paul

pinpoints these events as occurring justbefore the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Many prophecies reveal that this great reli-

gious leader, and the system over which he presides, will suddenly collapse and be destroyed when Christreturns (Revelation 17:16; 18:8, 16–17; 19:20). TheBible reveals that human efforts to unite professingChristians, and to harmonize the religions of theworld, are leading mankind into a trap that will ulti-mately fail. We need to watch world events, and seekthe truth in God’s word (2 Thessalonians 2:13–15),because ancient prophecies are coming alive today!

o you know what hap-pens after death?Throughout time, differ-ent cultures and religionshave come up with their

own answers. Even the tradition-al burial customs in different cul-tures have reflected the differingideas about what happens afterdeath.

Buddhists have traditionallycremated their dead. They expectnot an afterlife but a series ofrebirths until nirvana—a cessationof individual consciousness andabsorption back into the “worldsoul”—is achieved. Cremation

illustrates their belief that the soultransfers through countless bod-ies, each unimportant to the soul.

Ancient Egyptians, on theother hand, saw the afterlife as acontinuation of their earthly exis-tence. They took great care topreserve bodies and bury themwith items deemed useful in thenext world. Their funeral cus-toms—including their pyramids, perhaps the greatest monumentsto the dead ever built—showedtheir belief that personal exis-tence continued after death.

after death. Taking literally God’sstatement to Adam that: “In thesweat of your face you shall eat breadtill you return to the ground, for outif it you were taken; for dust you are,and to dust you shall return”(Genesis 3:19), the Hebrews tradi-tionally buried their dead simply andquickly, letting the dead bodydecompose. According to the Bible, the hope of the dead does not lie infreeing an entrapped soul or preserv-ing a dead body. Job asked a rhetori-cal question: “If a man die shall helive again?” (Job 14:14). Job knewthat God would eventually call himforth from the grave (v. 15). Clearly, the Bible shows that the resurrectionis the only hope of all who die.

The Immortality of the Soul Is Unscriptural

Most professing Christiansbelieve that Heaven is the reward ofthe righteous, and that there is a cor-responding Hell for the unrighteous.Yet many have been repulsed at thecommon Protestant concept of Hell,as it assumes billions will writhe inagony forever simply because theynever heard of Jesus Christ. If Christis “the only way to Heaven” asEvangelicals teach, then most peoplewho have ever lived and died cannotbe there. Roman Catholics have takena different approach, by adding addi-tional destinations for souls afterdeath; their tradition includes a reme-dial Purgatory and a torment-freeLimbo for unbaptized infants and“good” pagans.

The problem with all of theseideas is that they come from humanimaginations and not fromScripture. They all start with thepremise that mankind inherently hasimmortality, and that an immortalsoul must, therefore, go somewhere atdeath. But the Bible nowhere teachesthe immortality of the soul! In fact,

November–December 23November–December 23

the phrase immortal soul is noteven in the Bible.

In the Old Testament, theHebrew word nephesh is common-ly translated “soul.” It is used inGenesis 2:7, where we learn thatGod breathed into Adam thebreath of life and he became a liv-ing being (“soul,” KJV). Butnephesh is also used, in Genesis 1,to describe the life possessed byfish (v. 20) and other animals (v.24). In Scripture, there is nothingimmortal about a nephesh—a soul.Rather, we are told in Ezekiel 18:4that the soul that sins shall die.

In the New Testament, theGreek word psuche is commonlytranslated “soul.” Again, there isnothing immortal about a psuche.Revelation 8:9 uses this wordwhen explaining that one-third ofthe creatures that “were in thesea, and had life [Gr., psuche]died.” Similarly, Revelation 16:3states that every living creaturedied in the sea.” This word “crea-ture” is translated “soul” in theKing James Version; soul meanslife, and can refer to any livingcreature, either human or animal.

This Greek word psuche is theorigin of our English word psyche, which refers to the mind. It issometimes used to describe thosemental qualities that distinguishone individual from another. InMatthew 10:28, Jesus said: “Anddo not fear those who kill thebody but cannot kill the soul[psuche]. But rather fear Him whois able to destroy both soul andbody in hell.” Notice that the hellJesus described would destroyboth body and soul! The soul isnot immortal; it can be destroyed. In this context, psuche refers to aperson’s mind or individuality. While another person might endyour physical life, God can stillresurrect you. He retains a record

of your individuality, includingyour memory and your character. While man cannot take away yourchance to be restored and liveagain in the future, God clearlycan—and, in certain cases, will.

Three different Greek wordsare translated as “hell” in theEnglish-language New Testament, and each describes something dif-ferent. Tartaroo is only used once,in 2 Peter 2:4, and refers to a placeof restraint for demon spirits.Hades, which means “the grave,” isfrequently used to describe theabode of the dead until the resur-rection. Hades is never used todescribe a place of future punish-ment. Another Greek word, how-ever, commonly rendered “hell,”does refer to a place where thewicked are punished by death. This is Gehenna, and takes itsname from the Valley of Hinnomoutside Jerusalem, where the bod-ies of criminals were commonlyburned along with refuse and deadanimals. Christ used this location, familiar to all of His listeners, todescribe the burning up of theincorrigibly wicked.

The Bible nowhere indicatesthat immortality is mankind’snatural state; it teaches that weare inherently mortal anddoomed to death. In 1 Timothy6:16, the Apostle Paul empha-sized that only God has immortal-ity. He told the Church at Corinththat the righteous will put onimmortality at the resurrection(1 Corinthians 15:53–54).

If man is not an immortalsoul, what happens at death? TheBible compares death to sleep. The dead are unconscious, andknow nothing until the momentof their resurrection (Ecclesiastes9:5). The Apostle Paul describeddead Christians as being asleep inJesus Christ (1 Thessalonians

4:14–15). To His disciples, Jesusdescribed their dead friendLazarus as being asleep (John11:11–14). The prophet Danielforetold a future day when “thosewho sleep in the dust of the earthshall awake, some to everlastinglife, some to shame and everlast-ing contempt” (Daniel 12:2).

While man is mortal and hasno eternal life naturally inherent, the ancient patriarch Job declaredthat God would have a desire tothe work of His hands. Ultimately,He would call—and Job knew thathe would answer (Job 14:15).When will this occur? If the tradi-tional Heaven and Hell teaching ofmainstream Christianity is incor-rect, then how and when will theCreator deal with mankind?

The Better Resurrection

The Bible teaches that therewill be more than one resurrec-tion from the dead. These resur-rections occur at different pointsin time, and encompass differentgroups of people. The book ofRevelation makes clear the timeframe of each resurrection.

Notice what John records inRevelation 20:6: “Blessed andholy is he who has part in thefirst resurrection. Over such thesecond death has no power, butthey shall be priests of God andof Christ, and shall reign withHim a thousand years.” The firstresurrection is a resurrection toimmortality, and occurs beforethe Millennium—the 1,000-yearreign of Christ and the saints onEarth. The Apostle Pauldescribed this event to theCorinthian church, telling themthat it would occur “in amoment, in the twinkling of aneye, at the last trumpet. For thetrumpet will sound, and the dead

Page 24: November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 · November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 Regional Offices Tomorrow’s World® (USPS #020-391) is published bimonthly by the Living

will be raised incorruptible, andwe shall be changed. For this cor-ruptible must put on incorrup-tion, and this mortal must put onimmortality” (1 Corinthians15:52–53).

What is the last trumpet? Thebook of Revelation describes aseries of seven supernatural trum-pets to be sounded at the endtime. These trumpet blasts signalthe intervention of Almighty Godand herald His judgments on a

rebellious world. Revelation 8records the blowing of the firstfour of these angelic trumpets andthe incredible natural disastersthat follow each blast. Revelation9 tells of the blowing of the fifthand sixth trumpets and of thewarfare and destruction that fol-low those blasts. In Revelation11:15 we read: “Then the seventhangel sounded: And there wereloud voices in heaven saying, ‘Thekingdoms of this world havebecome the kingdoms of our Lordand of His Christ, and He shallreign forever and ever!’” The sev-enth and final trumpet heralds thereturn of Jesus Christ, and the res-urrection of the righteous dead.Paul emphasized this in 1Thessalonians 4:16: “For the LordHimself will descend from heavenwith a shout, with the voice of anarchangel, and with the trumpetof God. And the dead in Christwill rise first.” In the followingverses, he explained thatChristians still living at the timeof this awesome event would alsobe changed to immortality, and

would rise up to meet Christ withthe resurrected saints.

This first resurrection is oneto glory and immortality, andconsists only of those who areChrist’s at the time of His SecondComing (1 Corinthians 15:23).Hebrews 11:35 calls this the “bet-ter resurrection.” When Christrose from the dead after threedays and three nights in thetomb, He became the firstfruits ofthose that sleep (1 Corinthians

15:20). Those who genuinelyaccept Jesus Christ as Lord andSavior have an incredible prom-ise—that because He lives, wemight live also (John 14:19)!

The Second Resurrection

Only a tiny minority ofhuman beings has ever come totruly know Christ and the Father, and trust in them. What happensto everyone else?

Revelation 20:5 makes plainthat the rest of the dead—thosewho were not in the first resurrec-tion—do not live again until theconclusion of the millennial reignof Christ and the saints. Johnwent on to describe a vast array ofpeople who would at that time berestored to life and stand beforeGod (verse 12). We are told thatthe Book of Life is reopened. Whyis this necessary, when Scriptureexplains that those whose nameswere previously recorded in theBook of Life (Revelation 3:5) wereraised to immortality at Christ’sreturn 1,000 years earlier? God

will not need to reopen the Bookto see if He has inadvertentlymade an error and left someoneout. Rather, this reopening repre-sents a chance for others at thattime to be recorded in the book.

Jesus spoke of a resurrectionto judgment, at which the peopleof ancient gentile cities wouldstand alongside many of the Jewsof His day (Matthew 12:41–42).He also said that many of thoseancient peoples would have repent-ed if they had seen His works andheard His message (Matthew11:21–23). Are people lost foreverbecause they never had thatchance? Remember, God is norespecter of persons (2 Chronicles19:7) and desires that no personshould perish, but that all shouldcome to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).

Why could so many to whomthe Apostles preached fail to seeand understand? They were spiri-tually blinded (Romans 11:25).Remember, Christ clearly statedthat no man could come to Himunless the Father drew him (John6:44). Yet Paul anticipated thefuture time when all of Israelwould be saved (Romans 11:26).The prophet Ezekiel described in avision that future time of salvationfor Israel. He saw a valley full of drybones, and was told that it repre-sented the whole house of Israel. He saw those bones miraculouslycome together and form skeletons, then saw flesh cover them. Finally, breath entered into this vast armyof reconstituted bodies, and theywere alive once more. God’s mes-sage was: “Behold, O My people, Iwill open your graves and cause youto come up from your graves andbring you into the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am theLORD, when I have opened yourgraves, O My people, and broughtyou up from your graves” (Ezekiel

37:12–13). At this future event, which will occur 1,000 years afterChrist’s return, human beings willbe restored to physical life and beable to truly know God. This is nota second chance; rather, it is a firstopportunity for billions who werepreviously never made aware ofGod’s plan and purpose in this age.

This will be a future period ofjudgment for the vast majority ofmankind. Isaiah 65:20 indicatesthat this restoration to physicallife will continue for 100 years.During this time, spiritual blind-ness will be removed, the Book ofLife will be opened, and the res-urrected dead will be judged outof the books of the Bible, basedon what they do with the oppor-tunity that they then have.

A Third Resurrection

What happens at the end ofthis future period of judgment, when most of humanity will havebeen restored to physical life andgiven the opportunity to learn thetruth for the first time? We havediscussed those who trusted Christand were raised to immortality inthe first resurrection at His return, and we have seen what will hap-pen to those who were spirituallyblinded in this present age, thenrestored to mortal life 1,000 yearslater for their first opportunity tohave their names inscribed in theBook of Life. But what happens tothose who have knowingly rejectedGod’s salvation?

Some in this age have had anopportunity for God’s salvation, but have willfully turned aside andrejected it. Peter spoke of them in2 Peter 2:21: “For it would havebeen better for them not to haveknown the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turnfrom the holy commandment

delivered to them.” The ApostlePaul explained: “For if we sinwillfully after we have receivedthe knowledge of the truth, thereno longer remains a sacrifice forsins, but a certain fearful expecta-tion of judgment, and fiery indig-nation which will devour theadversaries” (Hebrews 10:26–27).

This judgment of God differsgreatly from traditionally imaginedhellfire, which many professingChristians expect will torture sin-ners for eternity. Notice thedescription given in Malachi 4:1:“‘For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, and all theproud, yes, all who do wickedlywill be stubble. And the day whichis coming shall burn them up,’ saysthe LORD of hosts, ‘that will leavethem neither root nor branch.’”The hellfire described in Scriptureis designed to destroy the wicked, not to torture them forever.Revelation 20:15 describes thetiming of this future destruction ofthe incorrigibly wicked. At theconclusion of the judgment peri-od, when the previously blindedhave been able to have their nameswritten in the Book of Life, thosewhose names are not found in theBook will be cast into a lake of firedesigned to burn them up. Then, those who in our current age hadrejected their chance for salvationwill be raised back to life to expe-rience the second death. In theparable of Lazarus and the richman, Jesus described one who willawaken in the grave (hades), not toglory or to an opportunity for sal-vation, but rather to face God’sfiery wrath advancing toward him(Luke 16:23). Such a person willbe confronted with the torment ofhis exclusion from the Kingdom ofGod, and his impending destruc-tion, and will perish along with allthose who ultimately reject their

opportunity for salvation. At thatpoint, all human beings whosenames have not been written in theBook of Life will perish.

Peter described that at this com-ing time of God’s final judgment onsin, “the heavens will pass awaywith a great noise, and the elementswill melt with fervent heat; both theearth and the works that are in itwill be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10).This will be followed by a “newheavens and a new earth in whichrighteousness dwells” (v. 13).

John also described this eventin Revelation 21, picturing the cre-ation of new heavens and a newEarth, and the descent fromHeaven of the New Jerusalem. Atthis glorious time, Christ will deliv-er the Kingdom to the Father (1Corinthians 15:24). The Fatherand Christ will dwell in the NewJerusalem, with the immortalizedsaints, in a time of no more sorrow, pain or tears. This will be possiblebecause—finally—sin and every-thing contaminated with it willeither have been cleansed ordestroyed (v. 26). The Bible con-cludes with this picture, whichmarks the end of the beginning andthe threshold of eternity! TW

s Jesus Christ alive? If He is, where is He? What is He doing? Andwhat are His future plans?

Fully one-third of Earth’s inhabitants call themselvesChristian. But even among them, relatively few really know what

Jesus taught, and what the Bible reveals about the true Jesus Christ. HeHimself said there would be many imitators—He called them “falsechrists” (Matthew 24:24). The Apostle Paul warned against “anotherJesus whom we have not preached… a different spirit which you havenot received… [or] a different gospel” (2 Corinthians 11:4). Do youknow the true Messiah—the real Jesus Christ?

What does the Bible reveal? Was Jesus just a teacher and a mir-acle worker? Or was He that and more? In John 4, Jesus is speakingto a woman at Jacob’s well near the city of Sychar in Samaria. This

woman became convinced that Hewas the promised Messiah—theChrist. She told the whole communi-ty about this man whom, she said,“told me all that I ever did” (v. 39). Asa result, many other Samaritans cameto hear Jesus speak, and they per-suaded Him to stay for two days. What was their impression of Jesus?“And many more believed because ofHis own word. Then they said to thewoman, ‘Now we believe, not becauseof what you said, for we ourselveshave heard Him and we know thatthis is indeed the Christ, the Savior ofthe world’” (John 4:41–42).

Was Jesus the Savior of the world? One should rather ask: “Is He theSavior of the world?” The proofs offulfilled prophecy, historical accuracy, the preservation of the text, and therevelation of life’s mysteries and mean-ing, all support the truth that He is.But you need to prove it to yourself.Where do we look for the evidence? Ifyou are not that familiar with theBible, just start reading the NewTestament gospels beginning with thebook of Matthew. If you are objectiveand open-minded, you will be amazedat the teachings of Jesus and the testi-mony of His disciples who were will-ing to die for Him and His Way of life.

There are more than 100 prophe-cies in the Old Testament foretelling thecoming of the Messiah. Among them isthe prophet Isaiah’s prophecy that theMessiah would be a descendant of KingDavid, the son of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1),that the Messiah would be born of a vir-gin (7:14), that He would live in Galilee(9:1–2), that His mission would includethe Gentiles (42:1–4) and that Hewould die with the wicked (53:9).Other prophecies foretold that Hewould be born in Bethlehem (Micah5:2), that He would be betrayed for 30pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12–13),that He would enter Jerusalem on adonkey (9:9) and that He would be likea smitten shepherd (13:7). These are

just a sampling of the many prophecies about the birth, life and death of Jesus Christ.

As prophecy foretold, Jesus was born of a virgin inthe town of Bethlehem (Matthew 1:23; 2:1). “Now thebirth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His motherMary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came togeth-er, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit” (1:18).An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream andtold him: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to taketo you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived inher is of the Holy Spirit” (v. 20). God the Father begatJesus—His Son—through the power of the Holy Spirit.“‘And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call Hisname Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.’So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which wasspoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son,and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is trans-lated, ‘God with us’” (vv. 21–23).

The name Jesus signifies “Savior.” Jesus becamethe Savior of the world. But how did He become so?Remember, He was Immanuel, “God with us”—Godin the flesh! Where did He come from? “In the begin-ning was the Word, and the Word was with God, andthe Word was God. He was in the beginning withGod. All things were made through Him, and withoutHim nothing was made that was made” (John 1:1–3).

This Word of whom the Apostle John spoke wasthe One who became Jesus Christ in the flesh. Notice:“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, andwe beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

This Word is the One through whom God creat-ed all things. The Apostle Paul plainly states thatGod “created all things through Jesus Christ”(Ephesians 3:9). Also: “For by Him all things werecreated that are in heaven and that are on earth, vis-ible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions orprincipalities or powers. All things were createdthrough Him and for Him” (Colossians 1:16).

Here is an awesome truth of the Bible: theWord—who existed with God and as God—came inthe flesh as the begotten Son of God, to become theSavior of the World! His life was worth more than allthe human beings who have ever lived, or ever willlive. He sacrificed His life to pay for the sins of theworld, as only He could do. He was pictured as thesacrificial lamb. Notice how John the Baptist testifiedof Him: “The next day John saw Jesus coming towardhim, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takesaway the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29).

Perhaps you feel the pain of guilt and sin. Thereis a way to turn your life around. Jesus, the Lamb ofGod, took upon Himself your sins. But in order to bereconciled to God, you must believe—and respondto—the true gospel. As Jesus proclaimed: “The timeis fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15).

It is amazing how many preachers will tell you tobelieve, but they will not tell you to repent. JesusHimself told us all to repent! Our Savior commandsevery human being on earth to repent and believe.Does God really demand something more thanbelief? The Apostle Peter said that He does. What didPeter say on the day of Pentecost, addressing thou-sands in his inspired sermon on the day the NewTestament Church began? He said: “Repent, and letevery one of you be baptized in the name of JesusChrist for the remission [forgiveness] of sins; andyou shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts2:38). Thousands who heard him were convicted oftheir sins, and were baptized on that day, receivingthe promised gift of the Holy Spirit.

A Revolutionary Jesus?

When I was about 12 years old, I questioned theteachings I heard in church. I said to myself: “I won-der if Jesus even exists?” So, I thought: “Well, I willjust read what these biographers Matthew, Mark, Lukeand John said about Him.” Even as a 12-year-old, Iwas amazed by what I found, particularly when I start-ed reading the “Sermon on the Mount.” For example,Jesus said: “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn theother to him also” (Matthew 5:39). I thought: “Histeachings are revolutionary!” And in my own limitedway, I changed my approach to life, though I wouldnot be called to real repentance until many years later.

Many, when they finally read the Bible for them-selves, have experiences like mine. Author BruceBarton was “turned off” by the false Jesus presentedin a Sunday School class. He wrote: “The little boy[Barton, writing about himself] looked up at the pic-ture which hung on the Sunday-school wall. Itshowed a pale young man with flabby forearms anda sad expression. The young man had red whiskers. Then the little boy looked across to the other wall. There was Daniel, good old Daniel, standing off thelions. The little boy liked Daniel. He liked David, too, with the trusty sling that landed a stone squareon the forehead of Goliath. And Moses, with his rod

and his big brass snake. They were winners—thosethree.… But Jesus! Jesus was the ‘lamb of God.’ Thelittle boy did not know what that meant, but itsounded like Mary’s little lamb. Something forgirls—sissified. Jesus was also ‘meek and lowly,’ a‘man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.’ Hewent around for three years telling people not to dothings” (The Man Nobody Knows, pp. i–ii).

Like Barton, I once had a false concept of thereal Jesus. Perhaps you have, too. But if you willread the Bible for yourself, you may be surprised todiscover that many of the popular images, con-cepts, and teachings often presented as“Christianity” are quite different from the truthsfound in Scripture.

Barton came to see a contradiction betweenJesus’ preaching and the world’s false image of Him.

Barton wrote of his re-discovery of the biblical JesusChrist: “The more sermons he [Barton] heard andthe more books he read the more mystified hebecame. One day he decided to wipe his mind cleanof books and sermons. He said, ‘I will read what themen who knew Jesus personally said about him. Iwill read about him as though he were a new his-torical character, about whom I had never heardanything at all.’ The man was amazed. A physicalweakling! Where did they get that idea? Jesuspushed a plane and swung an adze; he was a suc-cessful carpenter. He slept outdoors and spent hisdays walking around his favorite lake. His muscleswere so strong that when he drove the money-changers out, nobody dared to oppose him! A kill-joy! He was the most popular dinner guest inJerusalem! The criticism which proper people madewas that he spent too much time with publicans andsinners… and enjoyed society too much. Theycalled him a ‘wine bibber and a gluttonous man’….When the man finished his reading he exclaimed,‘This is a man nobody knows’” (ibid., pp. iii–iv).

Do you know the true Jesus of the Bible? Areyou sure? I challenge you to start reading throughthe New Testament with a fresh, objective view, justas Bruce Barton did. As many of us have found, theimage of Jesus that many preachers present to theworld is not the Jesus revealed in your Bible!

When, Where and Why?

Often, the attempt to celebrate Jesus’ birthdayobscures the real purpose of His birth. Do youknow why He was born? Do you even know whenHe was born? Do you know what He taught aboutkeeping the commandments? Do you know whichbiblical festivals Jesus observed, and expected Hisdisciples to observe?

Why was Jesus born? Notice what the angeltold Mary before His birth: “And behold, you willconceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, andshall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and willbe called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord Godwill give Him the throne of His father David. AndHe will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and ofHis kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:31–33).

Jesus’ message was about the Kingdom of Godon earth! He will return as King of kings and Lordof lords (Revelation 17:14; 19:16). He will sit uponthe throne of David, and rule over all the nations. As Isaiah wrote: “Of the increase of His governmentand peace there will be no end” (Isaiah 9:7). Thatis great news, and we all need to pray, as Jesustaught us: “Thy Kingdom come!”

When was Jesus born? Was Jesus born inDecember on Christmas Day? It may be surprisingto some, but we can be sure that He was not. Lukerecounts that Joseph and Mary had traveled backto Bethlehem for the census mandated by CaesarAugustus. The city was crowded, so Joseph andMary had to find alternative accommodations.Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and placed in amanger (Luke 2:7). Notice the setting and the timeof year: “Now there were in the same countryshepherds living out in the fields, keeping watchover their flock by night” (v. 8).

Most Bible scholars plainly admit that shep-herds were not in the field in December. The cold, rainy season began long before December 25. Jesuswas probably born in late September or earlyOctober, as most reputable Bible commentariesacknowledge. Why do we so often accept traditionsand teachings without checking up on them? Someof our concepts and ideas disagree with the Bible!

When was Jesus born? Was Jesus born in December on Christmas Day? It may be surprising

to some, but we can be sure that He was not.

Page 29: November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 · November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 Regional Offices Tomorrow’s World® (USPS #020-391) is published bimonthly by the Living

November–December 29November–December 29

Jesus never observed His birthday, and neither didthe Apostles! As the Encyclopaedia Britannica states:“According to a Roman almanac, the Christian festi-val of Christmas was celebrated in Rome by AD 336”(“Christmas,” p. 903). Notice also the following:“The Fathers of the 2nd and 3rd centuries, such asClement of Alexandria, Origen, and Epiphanius, contended that Christmas was a copy of a pagan cel-ebration” (“Christianity” p. 499).

When you read the book of Acts, you see that theApostolic Church of the first century—the NewTestament Church—never observed Christmas or thebirth of Christ. The true Apostolic Church of the firstcentury observed the biblical festivals: the NewTestament Passover, Pentecost, the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, the Feast of Tabernacles andthe Last Great Day. Scripture records plainly thatJesus Christ observed the Last Great Day of the Feast. The Apostle John referred to this Feast day when hewrote: “On the last day, that great day of the feast,Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes inMe, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flowrivers of living water’” (John 7:37–38).

Jesus observed the biblical festivals, and genuineChristians strive to follow His example. As the ApostlePeter stated: “For to this you were called, becauseChrist also suffered for us, leaving us an example, thatyou should follow His steps” (1 Peter 2:21).

Is traditional Christianity following in Jesus’steps? Is it observing the weekly Sabbath—the sev-enth day of the week—as Jesus did? Christ stated thatHe, “the Son of Man, is also Lord of the Sabbath”(Mark 2:28). As we know from Genesis 2:3, God sanc-tified the seventh day at creation. And for whom wasthe Sabbath made? Jesus stated: “The Sabbath wasmade for man, and not man for the Sabbath” (Mark2:27). The Sabbath was made for all humanity as a dayof rest, and as a memorial of God’s great creation.Remember, God created all things, including theSabbath day, through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:9).

The Historic Jesus

The Jewish historian Josephus referred to Jesus’brother, the Apostle James, who wrote the NewTestament book of James. In the first century AD,Josephus wrote the following: “Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembledthe Sanhedrin of judges, and brought before themthe brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose

name was James, and some others, [or, some of hiscompanions]; and when he had formed an accusa-tion against them as breakers of the law, he deliveredthem to be stoned” (Antiquities of the Jews, Bk. 20,chap. 9, sec. 1).

Yes, there is historic evidence for the existenceof Jesus Christ. Amazingly, some will accept the tes-timony of a historian like Josephus, yet ignore theeyewitness testimony of Jesus’ contemporaries.Matthew, Mark, Luke and John all wrote and testi-fied about the life, miracles, and teachings of ourSavior. The Apostle John even wrote: “That whichwas from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we havelooked upon, and our hands have handled, concern-ing the Word of life; the life was manifested, and wehave seen, and bear witness, and declare to you thateternal life which was with the Father and was man-ifested to us.”

The Apostle John testifies in this passage that notonly did he and the other Apostles hear and see theWord of Life—Jesus, the Messiah—but they alsotouched him. After His resurrection, Jesus tolddoubting Thomas to put his hand into the spearwound that killed Him. He commanded: “Reachyour finger here, and look at My hands; and reachyour hand here, and put it into My side. Do not beunbelieving, but believing” (John 20:27). What wasThomas’ response? “And Thomas answered and saidto Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (v. 28).

Jesus Christ died and was resurrected. He is alivetoday. If He were not, we would still be in our sins.As Paul wrote: “For if the dead do not rise, thenChrist is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, yourfaith is futile; you are still in your sins!” (1Corinthians 15:16–17). But the good news is statednext: “But now Christ is risen from the dead, and hasbecome the firstfruits of those who have fallenasleep. For since by man came death, by Man alsocame the resurrection of the dead” (vv. 20–21).

So who is Jesus? He is our living Savior! He is ourgreat High Priest, as the Apostle Paul explains(Hebrews 3:1; 4:14). He is at the right hand of God inheaven, where He “makes intercession for us”(Romans 8:34). He will soon come back to Earth asKing of kings and Lord of lords, to establish theKingdom of God on Earth, and to bring us worldpeace! Will you be ready for His return? Will youaccept His sacrifice and shed blood for the payment ofyour sins? Thank God that the Bible reveals the Saviorof the world, Jesus Christ—our living Savior! TW

Page 30: November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 · November–December 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 Regional Offices Tomorrow’s World® (USPS #020-391) is published bimonthly by the Living

ing” of the Bible or of biblical prophecy. They talkabout sentimental platitudes, “sweet Jesus,” and pre-cious little else. Yet they deny the powerful messagethat Jesus Himself brought from God the Father.

There is a Church today that does understand, and can help you with the “struggle” you will face! Itis the “little flock” to which Jesus referred in Luke12:32. It is the Church that had to “flee” into thewilderness during the Dark Ages (Revelation 12:6).It is the Church that is now preaching the “Gospel ofthe Kingdom of God”—the powerful message pro-claiming Christ’s soon return to this earth as King ofkings (Revelation 11:15).

If you are going to be able to escape the horrify-ing Great Tribulation, and if you are to be given thepower of the Holy Spirit and the real understanding, faith and courage to guide you through the years justahead, then the “church of your choice” had betterbecome the church of God’s choice! In your Bible, youwill find that God names things or people what theyare! In 12 different places in the New Testament, youwill find that God calls His Church exactly what it is:“the Church of God.”

In the introduction to 1 Corinthians, theApostle Paul officially addresses this letter to “thechurch of God which is at Corinth” (1 Corinthians1:2). Later, he tells the brethren: “Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the churchof God” (1 Corinthians 10:32). In 1 Corinthians11:16, Paul states: “But if anyone seems to be con-tentious, we have no such custom, nor do thechurches of God.”

In 1 Corinthians 15:9, Paul writes: “For I am theleast of the apostles, who am not worthy to be calledan apostle, because I persecuted the church ofGod.” In the formal opening of 2 Corinthians, hewrites: “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the willof God, and Timothy our brother, to the church ofGod which is at Corinth, with all the saints who arein all Achaia” (2 Corinthians 1:1). When Timothywas stationed in Ephesus—a center of the worshipof “dead” idols—Paul wrote to him: “I write so thatyou may know how you ought to conduct yourselfin the house of God, which is the church of the liv-ing God, the pillar and ground of the truth” (1Timothy 3:15).

Twelve is a significant number in the Bible. Itdenotes foundation, stability and organizational

beginnings. As most of you readers know, there were12 patriarchs in the Old Testament, 12 tribes ofIsrael, 12 apostles, 12 gates into the Holy City and 12foundations of the wall of the Holy City. So it is verysignificant that God—in His inspired Word—gives thename “Church of God” to His true Church 12 timesin the New Testament.

Of course, quite a number of churches use thename “church of God.” So it is vital that we under-stand another basic characteristic of the true Church:it is an obedient Church! In describing the remnant ofthis Church at the time of the end, God’s Word tellsus: “And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her off-spring, who keep the commandments of God andhave the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation12:17). Many churches claim that they have the “tes-timony” of Jesus Christ. But very few claim to obeythe Ten Commandments, for they have been taughtthey are “under grace” and so need not keep theCommandments of God as a way of life. But as the Apostle John was inspired to tell us: “Here is thepatience of the saints; here are those who keep thecommandments of God and the faith of Jesus”(Revelation 14:12).

Could anything be more clear? Somewhere on this earth is the true “Church of

God”—called by God’s name, keeping theCommandments of God and actually preaching thesame gospel Jesus preached—the dynamic messageof Christ’s rule over this earth as King of kings. Thisis not a church of men, named after some man orsome form of church government or one or two keydoctrines. Rather, it is named after God—for it istruly His Church, and the Church of which JesusChrist is the living Head (Ephesians 1:22).

Should you really go to the church of your per-sonal choice, or the church in which you just “hap-pened” to grow up? Or should you zealously seekand find and become an active member of the trueChurch of God—which Jesus Himself built?
