PUMPKIN SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICEBY DIRECTOR , DUSTY WALTNER

The leaves are falling and the nights are crisp. Autumn is in full swing and the

aroma of pumpkin spice fills the air. If you go into any market during the

month of November, you will find shelves loaded with pumpkin spice

products. Each year the product combinations get more bizarre, from cookies

to cereal, cream cheese to Spam. Pumpkin spice has soared in popularity over

the last decade, but it isn't a new spice. In fact, recent discoveries of spice

residue on ancient Indonesian pottery has led researchers to believes that the

wonderful blend of nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and allspice we know of today

has been around for over 3,500 years, University of Washington professor,

Peter Lape led several digs that revealed the spice laden pottery (Univ. of

Wash. 2018). According to Family Tree Magazine there are records of Early

American Settlers using a similar spice blend in the 1620s, but the term

"Pumpkin Spice" wasn't popularized until 1936 when a Washington Post

article published a recipe for "pumpkin spiced cakes" (Peck 2019). If you want

to try your hand at some of the more traditional and bizarre ways to use

pumpkin and pumpkin spice, come check out our newest cookbook

"Pumpkin It Up!" by Eliza Cross. You can also checkout Family Tree Magazine

in our library for more information, as well as our Newsbank Database for

more detailed articles.
