A special meet ing was held a t Hort i -cul tura l Hall , Boston, on November 16, to enable the members to meet wi th the Executive Committee of the Nat ional Association of Greenkeepers.

Pres ident T rea t introduced Colonel John Morley. Pres ident of the N. A. G. A. Colonel Morley said in p a r t :

To the officers and members of The New England Greenkeepers Association, Greet ings.

" In-asmuch as I had the p leasure and oppor tuni ty to address th is association a t the Massachuset t s Agr icu l tu ra l Col-lege a t Amhers t , I do not th ink it is again necessary to r epea t in detail,

how the Nat ional Association of Green-keepers of America came into existence, and th is a f t e rnoon I do not care to t ake up too much of your valuable time, f o r I am very anxious to have you hear a f e w words f r o m each member of our executive committee.

"The members of th is committee cover a la rge t e r r i to ry , and I believe t h a t a f t e r they have all given a few re-marks , you will observe t h a t we a re pract ical ly all of one mind. They repre-sent some of the la rges t dis t r ic ts in America, and like your association have pract ical ly one object in view, and t h a t is—to promote Golf Coarse Maintenance to a Higher S tandard .

"Bu t before proceeding f u r t h e r , I de-sire to call to your a t tent ion, t h a t onr coming into your t e r r i t o ry had only one object in view, and t h a t is to ex-tend to you the r igh t hand of fellowship. We knew before we came t h a t we would be bestowed wi th w h a t New England is noted for , the spir i t of brother ly love. While our members a r e well acquainted wi th your Pres iden t . Mr. Carl ton T r e a t and a f ew others, by the i r previous a t tendance a t several of our recent Golf Shows and Conferences, very f ew of our Execut ive Committee have had the oppor tuni ty to meet t he Grand old man of our profession. John Shanahan . When I received the an-nouncement t h a t John S h a n a h a n was appointed on the advisorv board of The Green-Section of The U. 5. G. A., I informed Ganson Depew, Cha i rman t h a t he had made an excellent choice; and I t r u s t t h a t he may live a good many years to enjoy the honor con-f e r r ed upon him.

"Believing t h a t among those present here this a f te rnoon, some may have been absent f r o m hea r ing my address a t Amhers t , I will roughly outline a few of our Aims and Objects. In the f i rs t place I may s ta te t h a t The Nat ional Association has no th ing wha tever to do wi th dis t r ic t associations. We believe in homs rule fo r d is t r ic ts ; our association simply deals with the individual green-keeper and pro-greenkeeper whom we believe a re wor thy of membership into our organizat ion. A greenkeeper before mak ing an applicat ion fo r membership in our association mus t have a t least three years experience; likewise a pro-greenkeeper must have five years ex-perience. Our main object is to ad-vance the a r t and science of green-keeping, to cement the greenkeepers of The United Sta tes and C a n a d a into a

closer re la t ionship wi th each other, to collect and disseminate prac t ica l know-ledge of t he problems of greenkeeping wi th a view to more efficient and econ-omical Maintenance of g'olf courses, to provide direct financial benefits to famil ies of greenkeepers who die or a re disabled.

SUo i j ne&f over five years since we were first organized, and since t h a t t ime we have planted our association in-to 32 States , and 4 Provinces in the Dominion of Canada . We have a sub-s tan t ia l membership, and dur ing this business depression we a re holding our membership well in line. Our financial resources a re well over $10,000, and we have no liabilities. We pay to the bene-ficiary of a deceased member the sum of $250 immediately upon sa t i s fac to ry proof of death. We give to our members in dis tress financial assistance.

" W e have played a prominent p a r t along prac t ica l lines and have aided a number of our members who have lost the i r positions in secur ing new courses. We a re doing all in our power to pro-mote t he in teres t of greenkeeping. Each yea r we s tage our annua l Golf Show Confe rence and Convention. This yea r we will meet in New York City, com-mencing the week of J a n . 19th, 1932, hav ing secured The Hotel Pennsylvania fo r all events. Eve ry th ing is being done to make th is occasion one of the best in our history. We a re very anxious to have the members of The New England Greenkeepers Association, as well as all those interested in golf main tenance f r o m the E a s t e r n States , to a t tend our Annua l Golf Show and Conferences. W e a re pleased to s ta te t h a t t h e manu-f a c t u r e r s a re co-operat ing wi th us, and f r o m present indications, The Golf Show will be the la rges t in point of exhibits t h a t h a s been held in The United Sta tes .

" I t probably is not necessary to s ta te t h a t one of our chief objects is educa-tion, especially along prac t ica l and scientific lines. You will agree wi th me t h a t the golf season j u s t pas t has been one of the worst , so f a r as golf tu r f is concerned, we have ever had, and i t does seem to most of us t h a t each succeeding season br ings to us new types of dis-ease and insects. While we a r e able to discuss these problems in our local dis-t r i c t s and a t var ious t imes a re able to help one another to combat ' these troubles, we find t h a t we a r e be t te r able to make g r e a t e r progress when a combination of distr icts a re b rough t to-gether . Wi th th is in view, The Nat iona l

Association in connection wi th i ts Golf Show, devotes th ree days to discuss 'pro ' and 'con' a t our conferences all of the leading subjects necessary fo r f u r -ther progress toward economical main-tenance. Never in h is tory has a, g r ea t e r a r r a y of ta len t been selected t h a n the one to be heard a t New York. You will enjoy l is tening to those who will speak along Scientific lines, as well as to hea r the experienced green-keepers tell in the i r own ways the best methods to prevent and control the va r -ious tu r f t roubles, and methods to des-t roy the m a n y insects and bugs t h a t in-f e s t our golf grasses . Eve ry th ing pos-sible has been done to make those t h a t a t tend comfortable and enjoyable. The Hotel Pennsy lvan ia is noted f o r i ts hospi ta l i ty to its guests . We a re very anxious to have you and your f r i ends spend a f ew days wi th us as our guests , when we meet ix New York City. We will t r y and make your visit a p leasant one. I t will be a Gala week fo r all greenkeepers t h a t a t tend. I t will prob-ably be a long t ime before we a re aga in able to hold another such g a t h e r i n g in the Eas t , f o r we now have a t least 17 cities seeking our Annua l Golf Show, Conference and Convention.

"As t ime goes on, our minds, de-sires, and circumstances change. And we are desirous to consider any sug-gestions or plans, whereby we can wi th sa fe ty give g rea t e r service to those of our call ing in l ife. Let us pu t our Ideals to work, so t h a t the f r i end ly dealings which character ize our daily activit ies shall a lways govern us. Let the qual-ities of goodness and rel iabil i ty which we seek in our profession, which we a r e continually building, be a monu-men t to our calling. Let us endeavor to make new f r i ends and above all keep the old, especially those t h a t have proven wor thy . Let us have a be t t e r unders t and ing among one another . Cal-vin Coolidge says, 'The basis of good unders t and ing which the world so much needs to day is deficient, because those in au thor i ty do not have a first hand knowledge of the people and conditions wi th which they a re a t t e m p t i n g to deal ' . The officers of our ins t i tu t ion a r e anx-ious to obtain first hand knowledge, especially f r o m those t h a t a r e desirous to cement the sp i r i t of co-operation. We a re pleased t h a t we have come into your te r r i to ry , so t h a t we m a y know each other bet ter . We know t h a t the w e l f a r e of one is the concern of all, in union there is s t rength , especially when

we aim to have our membership mel-lowed by good fellowship, Humanized by Char i ty , and dedicated to service. We a re anxious to place the green-keeper on a h igher plane, t h a t he re -ceive j u s t enumera t ions fo r his ser-vices, t h a t he command the respect to which he is entitled, t h a t he aid and encourage his fel low greenkeeper in t ime of dis t ress and t r ibula t ions . Let us not forg'et t h a t the World has in-finite respect and genuine admira t ion f o r the person who tr ies . Fo r men put-t i n g f o r t h ea rnes t endeavors, the re is no such th ing as fa i lu re . Optimism predominates in the i r personal i ty , and is impar ted to those associated wi th them. The World holds no brief f o r the pessimist . There a re thousands of wor-t h y men, you and I never hear of, all doing the i r best; and mak ing this sphere a bet ter place in which to live. The degree of f a m e or possessions is secondary to the spir i t in which i t is thought , and if, a t the end of the road, the door t h rough ci rcumstance remains closed, no m a n can say success was not yours , f o r you have tr ied, and in t h a t t r y i n g made good.

" In conclusion: " I n behalf of the officers and mem-

And I assure you when i t is t ime f o r us to leave f o r our respective homes, we will c a r ry back wi th us the many p leasan t recollections of our visi t and the kindness shown by its officers and members ."

Other members of t he Execut ive Com-mi t tee present , all of whom spoke br ief ly , b r ing ing gree t ings f r o m the i r sections we re : George Davies, J o h n Quaill, John MacGregor , F r e d Burk -ha rd t , Wm. J . Sansom, Robert J . Hayes, John Anderson, and W a l t e r E. Knowles. All discussed the problems of the pas t season, which evidently have troubled greenkeepers everywhere. At ten t ion was called to the year ly Golf Show, to be held in New York in J a n u a r y .

The Execut ive Committee was enter -ta ined a t a d inner mee t ing a t t he B. A. A. Monday evening, and a t the var ious clubs around Boston on Tuesday.

C O O P E R A T I O N

In 1924 the Greenkeepers Club of New Eng land was formed, the f i rs t or-ganizat ion of its kind in t h e country . Since then we have held in the neighbor-hood of 160 meetings. We have played golf on a g rea t m a n y courses, have had indoor meetings a t which speakers took up the problems of the golf course. In J u n e 1929 the first issue of the News-le t te r was published. In t h a t t ime, near ly eight years , have we progressed? Has there been any cooperation? A r e golf courses any bet ter kept? Are we ^ any bet ter greenkeepers?

In 1924 the only scientific research along golf lines was done by the Green Section a t Washington . Since then we have had exper iment work unde r t aken a t the S ta te College, a school fo r green-keepers. Much of th is work has been under taken because of the demands of the greenkeepers .

The Newslet ter so ably edited by Mr. West has been an added f ac to r in our progress . Go back th rough your files and observe how m a n y valuable art icles a re pr inted in its pages .

W h a t is the next step f o r w a r d ? Whatever it is, we have done p re t ty well so f a r , so why not tackle i t ourselves and not sit a round hoping some one will solve our problems f o r us. Most of us live wi th our golf course the best p a r t of the year , we know it in t imately , we know the poorly drained greens, where brown patch will s t r ike first and a hun-dred and one th ings t h a t no exper t can tell us. I t is knowledge acquired t h rough experience. Is t h a t experience valuable?

I th ink we all will g r a n t t h a t scientific research work is as impor t an t in our line of endeavor as in any other . We all welcome i t and no one is kicking about any knowledge which will help him out of his troubles. Where is the p rope r place to conduct golf exper iment work? A golf course. A f a i r w a y exper iment on a piece of tur f which has never had a t r ac to r r u n over it or a greens exper-iment on a plot t h a t has never had the w e a r and t e a r and t r a m p i n g of gol fers over it, tells very lit t le. So lets ge t to-ge ther and compare notes. We may make snap judgement but some one will check us up. Some of our t roubles of the pas t summer were the uncontrolable wea the r conditions. Some were due to inefficient methods. Lets check up and see if we were as efficient as we migh t have been. I learned a lot this pas t sea-

I read wi th in te res t Mr. W. E . Lang-ton's ar t icle in the September News-let ter . I t was wr i t t en by a man who is evidently able to observe accura te ly and pu t two and two together and get f ou r . Mr. West 's column in the same issue headed " A n Idea" hi t the nail on the head. Let 's t ake Mr. West ' s suggest ion and fo rm a research committee which will ge t in fo rmat ion together f r o m the: members on var ious subjects and present them to the Club fo r discussion once a, month. Let th is committee work wi th the Green Section in Washington, the exper imen t , s tat ion a t Amher s t or any other agencies where they can ge t in-fo rmat ion . In other words—lets help ourselves.

C H A N G E S AT T H E COUNTRY CLUB

We have made numerous changes du r ing the pas t year here a t the Country Club. F o u r greens have been changed, not in location, bu t in shape, size, and contour, wi th var ious t r a p s worked in-to the picture . On two of these greens we used tu r f f r o m our nurser ies , on the others the original tu r f was used.

We have done a g r e a t deal removing knolls and, as we a re mostly on ledge, i t is work t h a t takes time, bu t we feel these changes have made the players much more satisfied. We have changed over a number of t r a p s on the course, b ' l i l t n number of new tees; also by changing the lines of our f a i rways , we have brought into play t r a p s which were before out of line.

Along the first of Ju ly we decided t h a t any w a t e r i n g we did was to be done a t n ight , t h a t is f r o m six o'clock to ten or eleven. On the twenty-seven holes, th ree men handled i t very nicely; of course, we had considerable r a in th is season, bu t th ree or f o u r t imes w a t e r was needed, and f r o m the resul ts t h a t n ight w a t e r i n g gave us, we a re all f o r it. The greens had a much be t t e r cushion effect, and looked be t te r in every w a y t h a n when we used to do ear ly morn ing wa te r ing . I also feel t h a t n ight w a t e r i n g has kept us pract i -cally f r e e f r o m scald. We had some brown-patch, bu t I do not blame it to n ight wa te r ing . I do th ink one can over-w a t e r to do serious ha rm , bu t to me the

dampness in the soil l as t ing as i t does f o r so much longer t h a n a t any other w a t e r i n g t ime, means l i fe f o r the p lant . Then again, I a m f r a n k to say t h a t an-o thsr season may change m y mind, bu t up to date, n ight w a t e r i n g has given us the best resul ts . I have heard some speak in favor , others aga ins t th is t ime f o r wa te r ing , pe rhaps th is note will arouse some other member to tell us why the t ime they w a t e r is best f o r them.

Knowing t h a t the Edi to r of t he N E W S L E T T E R has of ten had diffi-culty in ge t t ing sufficient ma te r i a l f r o m the members, I am sending along these j k . r ambl ing notes to help. A heai*ty wish t h a t the Newsle t te r continues, and let us all get behind it and help!

N E W W O R K A T T H E M I N U T E MAN

The Minute Man Golf Club, s i tuated on Concord Avenue, Lexington, was opened in J u n e 1931. Nine greens were pu t into play and in Augus t , work was s ta r ted on the las t nine. To date, f o u r greens and th ree f a i r w a y s have been completed and a r e going into t he win te r wi th a fine coat of grass , t hanks to t he Fa l l seeding which responded splendidly.

The subsoil of the "Minute M a n " con-sists of blue gravel , on which was laid the founda t ion f o r the greens. A f t e r the rough shap ing and g rad ing of the greens was completed they were heavily rolled to insure a firm base. To th is base was added an eight-inch seed bed, compris ing six inches of one-inch ^ ^ screened loam topped wi th two inches of one qua r t e r inch screened loam. This was allowed to s tand f o r a week to t en days to determine any set t l ing or weed growth t h a t migh t occur. J u s t pr ior to seeding, t he greens were firmly rolled and raked and rolled again unt i l t he soil was firm, yet not packed. This pro-cess decreases the possibility of pockets and unnecessary undula t ions which might otherwise f o r m . One hundred pounds of superphospha te 16% was well raked into the top layer and t h e seed mix tu re containing 40% So. Ger. mixed bent, 40% Chewings Fescue and 20 % Red Top was sown a t the r a t e of eight pounds per 1000 squa re fee t . This mix tu re was ca re fu l ly raked, l ight ly rolled, and wa te red wi th a fine spray . In f o u r days resul t s began to show and by s teady and ca re fu l w a t e r i n g t he

This wonderfu l ly efficient machine is of the well-known pa ten ted Worth ington Convertible type, capable in this new design of being t rans formed at the will of the operator f rom its seven-unit format ion and swath of 16 feet , into a Worthington five-unit quintuplex or a Wor th ington three-unit Triple of respectively twelve and seven fee t width of swath . Any of these changes may be accomplished by the unassisted operator in a minute 's time. The saving in expense of the cutt ing operations, by the adoption of the "Mul t igang" which will cut an acre in four minutes, is one of the f ea tu res connected with the development of this incom-parab le machine.

grass made s teady progress . The l a t e Sp r ing of 1932 should find them in ex-cellent condition f o r play.

In cons t ruc t ing t he f a i r w a y s our bigg'est f a c t o r to contend wi th was the removal of rocks. Two ca t t e rp i l l a r t r ac to r s were pu t into use and i t was bu t a short t ime before this obstacle was overcome.

The land was then plowed, disced harrowed, brushed and rolled. Next came a good r ak ing and all small debris was l e f t in piles and collected. The soil was then in a good condition f o r seeding to which 40% Chewings Fescue, 40% Ken. Blue (21 lb.) and 20% Red Top was sown, ave rag ing 175 pounds to the acre. We were f o r t u n a t e in hav ing a f ew l ight r a in s j u s t a f t e r seeding and t h a t mois ture surely worked wonders . The g rass obtained a fine foothold and has progressed steadily since.
