♫Do You Wii? by Sarah Baker

Do you Wii? Scott Emigh does! On Wednesday, October 7, Scott, the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports at the CSU Rec Center, faced off against a handful of competitors to participate in the Intramural Special Event Wii Bowling competition. He emerged victorious and won a sweet “Got Shirt” T-shirt. We sat down with Scott and got the

inside scoop on this exciting competition:Q: Did you have any strategy planned out going into the competition?SE: I planned on scoring more than everyone else and to roll a lot of strikes.Q: Good Plan. How did you prepare for this competition? SE: I had a Mountain Dew™ to take the edge off and meditated.Q: What do you think the key factors were that led to your triumph?SE: My superior bowling skills both in real life and on the Wii.Q: Lefty or Righty?SE: Righty.Q: How were your opponents? Did anybody give you a tough time or was it an easy win for you?SE: Everyone involved were good bowlers, but my overwhelming ability made for an easy win.Q: Any advice for aspiring Wii bowlers?SE: Practice a lot and find a good place to put each of your shots. So there you have it. If you want to win a cool T-shirt and bragging rights, check out upcoming Intramural events such as Table Tennis and Billiards; join in and earn points towards the All Sports Championship!

This year Cleveland State Recreation Services held both Men’s and Co-ed Flag Football leagues on the Krenzler field. The teams battled it out bravely in evenings that were not only cold, but sometimes rainy! The men’s league held some pretty tough competition, with participation from a total of nine teams. It came down to Classy Cleats versus Campbell in the finals, with Classy Cleats, led by captain Sadiq Khan, coming out on top. Meanwhile, the Co-ed league didn’t have as many participants as the men’s league, but the athletes seemed to have enjoyed the friendly competition just the same. Team Rec and Team Fenn Tower ended up in the finals. Both teams gave it their all, but Team Fenn Tower, led by Reid May, won it in the last six minutes of the match. Sammi D’amico, one of the participants on Team Fenn Tower, said after the match, “I had a blast! I can’t wait to do this again next year.” Overall, the competitions turned out to be a great success, and we hope to see YOU at our next 4 v 4 flag football intramural next semester!

Eat This Not That (Pizza Hut)

Advice From Our Registered Dietician, Monica Habib

Eat this:12 “ Fit N’ Delicious Green Pepper, Red Onion and Diced Red TomatoKcal: 150Fat: 4gSat Fat: 1.5gCarbs: 23g

Not That:12” Meat Lovers Pan PizzaKcal: 330Fat: 18gSat Fat: 7gCarbs: 27g

2) Make smart choices. Load up on the veggies! Fill up half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, a quarter with lean meat, and a quarter with your favorite side dish.

3) Drink plenty of water. It’ll make your stomach fuller and is a healthier alternative to soda.

4) Control your portion sizes. Go for smaller portions and avoid going back for seconds.

5) Eat the turkey without the skin. Avoid the extra fat and cholesterol that goes along with the skin.

6) Lastly, grab that slice of pumpkin pie. It’s the holidays! Have a moderate portion of your favorite dessert.

Tip: All pizza is not created equally! Not only can you save calories but you save a lot of fat by choosing vegetables on your pizza instead of any other topping.

Workout of the Month: External Rotator Cuff Exercise by Scott Gioia

Step 1: Lie on your right side with a rolled-up towel under your right armpit. Stretch your right arm above your head. Keep your left arm at your side with your elbow bent to 90° and the forearm resting against your chest, palm down.

Step 2: Roll your left shoulder out, raising the left forearm until it’s level with your shoulder. (Hint: This is like the backhand swing in tennis.)

Step 3: Lower the arm slowly. Repeat the exercise until your arm is tired.

Step 4: Then do the exercise with your right arm.

Benefits: This exercise focuses on strengthening the shoulder and rotator cuff, muscles that are important stabilizers for the shoulder blade and arm. Keeping your rotator cuff strong will help decrease your chances for injuries that occur all too often with exercise and overuse.

How to do it:

Congratulations to Linda Herman, one of the winners of our raffle for two tickets to the Don Giovanni opera! Linda is an artist herself, who enjoys painting and drawing, and she even works at the Art Department at Cleveland State University. She moved to Ohio

from San Francisco just over four years ago and currently lives in Cleveland Heights with her husband, her two daughters, and her son. She comes to the Rec Center regularly in the mornings and takes advantage of our Free Family weekends with her kids. We asked her a number of questions to get her reaction from her big win to the opera:

Q: How excited were you to win the tickets? What went through your mind? LH: I squealed like a little girl. My kids came running from other rooms in the house because I was giggling like a fool. I really didn’t think I would win because there were a lot of green slips in the entry box. Q: Who are you going to bring with you to the opera? LH: My husband Tom and I will enjoy the show together. We used to go to the opera regularly before we moved to Cleveland but haven’t gone together since we’ve been here.Q:How long have you been a fan? LH: Don Giovanni first hit my radar back in the 80’s when I saw the movie Amadeus. Before that, my exposure to opera and classical music was very limited. I became a fan of Mozart and a whole new world opened up to me.

20/20/20 The Perfect WorkoutIf you’re looking for a group fitness class that has it all then try 20/20/20 every Tuesday at 6PM! This 60 minute class is divided into twenty minutes of cardio, twenty minutes of sculpting, and twenty minutes of core work and stretching. You’ll be able to build your cardio endurance, engage your core, and strengthen your muscles all in one session! For the best fitness combinations, the class utilizes a wide variety of exercises and equipment. You could be jogging in place, doing lunges, working with the dumbbells, doing chest presses on the ball, and doing squats, all in one session! “I love coming to this class because of all the different things we cover. It means I never get bored!” one regular attendee, Silvana Ochoa, commented about the class.

Some of the other great features of this class include a nice and spacey room in Studio 229, ceiling fans circulating lots of cool air, and upbeat music playing that will keep you on your toes. The instructor, Michael Ciccarello, is also fun and enthusiastic, and he’ll keep you going the entire hour. So if you want to tweak your routine this month, take 20/20/20!

maze, which contained the majority of the candy and took up nearly a fourth of the MAC gym. The kids also enjoyed a giant inflatable pumpkin, where they could go inside and bounce around. Other activities included corn hole, basketball, and a booth where kids could decorate paper pumpkins or their own candy bags. There was even a story telling section, where the younger kids sat on colorful inflatable tubes and enjoyed a Halloween pop-up book.

All of the participants, from the parents and the kids to the staff and volunteers working at the event looked pleased and excited to be there. One volunteer, a member from the Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology, commented enthusiastically, “This event is such a unique way to contribute to the community!” Rec-or-Treat was put on by a number of Cleveland State organizations—Student Government and the Greek councils, as well as Cleveland State Recreation Services. If you missed out on the fun this year, come out next Halloween!

What do YOU like best about the Recreation Center

It’s hard to believe that the semester is already halfway over! September and October flew right by! The next thing we all have to look forward to is Thanksgiving, which I’m thoroughly excited for. Of course, we’ll all need to run to the Rec Center after that holiday—to burn off all of those extra calories! Of course, you can always check back for the December Issue for the Workout of the Month, too! Anyways, happy November, and don’t forget—if you have any comments or questions for the newsletter, email me at [email protected]. Liz Newman

CSU’s Crew Team“What’s the best thing about being part of the Crew team?” repeats Lily Hecker, President of CSU’s Crew team and a grad student at CSU. She thinks for a moment and then admits, “Being on the water—you get an entirely different view of Cleveland that way and realize that the river is actually really nice.”There are loads of great things about being on a Crew team— whether it’s that beautiful view on the water, or the adrenaline pumping during the race, or the actual physical benefits from rowing.

These are some of the many reasons why the four guys and four girls of the Crew club team drag themselves out of bed at the crack of dawn to train for their seasons. This fall, they were training for one regatta in particular—the Speakmon Memorial regatta in Columbus on October 24. Although the team admits that they started training later than most teams this year and mostly have a fresh set of faces on the team, such as freshman Hanna Morris and international student James Chien, they still fared well in their competitions. In the Speakmon Memorial regatta, the Men’s Novice 4+ beat John Carroll by a tenth of a second to take second place. Meanwhile, the Women’s Novice 4+ arrived at the finish 18 seconds behind Case Western and finished respectively in third place. The team is coached by David Dressler and Maddy Widen. They will celebrate the end of their season with an Annual end-of-the-season ceremony and will continue their winter training on January 19, 2010. Those who are interested in joining can email [email protected].

who finished fourth in the national hockey tournament last year. They also won their first showcase game 6-1 against the University of Gettysburg, crushed Case Western 9-1 in their first home game, and dominated Gannon University 13-1 in their most recent game. The only loss they suffered was against the University of Pittsburgh. The team is led this year by captains Chris Spann and Tim Patrick and assistant captains Ryan Okicki and Joe Mazzeo. They are coached this year by Dan Giera, Brian Okicki, and Dan Holden. So check out one of their games or check out next month’s newsletter to see how the rest of their season turns out!
