Introduction to LED Lighting

This format is ideal if you have limited space. They are thin strips, typically less than 1cm thick, with LED’s embedded in a row. Fixed in place with magnetic strips or brackets they are ideal for use with multiple enclosures since they can be extended for different sized vivariums, or even split so that several vivariums can be illuminated from one power supply.

Many LED lamps have been designed to fit into a standard E27 screw fixture. These have the advantage that the power supply is built into the lamp which then can be installed into a standard light fitting. These types of product are usually designed to provide a directional beam of light, rather than general illumination. They do not produce a hot spot of course and so are not suitable for creating a basking spot.

There are some LED systems that have single LED lights which can be positioned to illuminate specific areas, or as night time light.

The all singing and all dancing solution to LED lighting these hoods are really designed for use above glass terrariums. They provide excellent wide illumination and some also have plant growth lighting, night lighting and may also be combined with UVB tubes for a total lighting solution.

LED lighting provides an excellent solution for keepers to once again improve the captive husbandry of reptiles and a new revenue stream for stores to take advantage of. These days customers who come into a shop will more than likely be familiar with the concept of UVB and even if they are not quite sure of exactly what it does, they do accept that most reptiles need it. If they don’t, and can’t be educated, then they shouldn’t be keeping reptiles.

A concept that has yet to become familiar though is that reptiles have a requirement for the right quantity of light. Not the time it is on, but the brightness (lux) of the illumination they receive, more lux equals brighter light. Many species will have a certain brightness that is required to trigger biological responses, and if that is not achieved then they may not feed, breed or even wake up in the morning.

If you think about it then it’s obvious really. In the Australian Outback for example, daylight may reach an eye watering 120,000 lux. That’s the extreme of course and in reality a sunny day across the world can range from 30,000 to 100,000 lux on average and even a cloudy day will reach 10,000 lux. Compare that to a fluorescent tube where you will be lucky to achieve 500 lux and you can see that the illumination provided into a vivarium may tick the UVB box, but not the illumination

box. In fact with a standard T8

tube it’s a bit like keeping your reptile in the shade all the time,

a l t h o u g h T5 tubes do

perform better.

So how can this be addressed? Luckily

these days there is a whole range of products that allow us to balance

the need for pure illumination and UV requirements. If the vivarium is large enough then using additional daylight tubes is an option,

especially if the new T5 tubes are used which are much

brighter than the T8’s. Metal halide bulbs provide excellent UV and very bright illumination and are an

excellent choice, again providing the enclosure is suitable.

But if the enclosure is not suitable for these solutions then we must turn to LED’s. These provide excellent, bright, visible light but do not take up significant space or generate lots of heat. Being LED their power usage is negligible, representing a significant power saving for keepers.

The format of lighting used will depend on the enclosure type, keeper preference and what they are trying to achieve.
